Diego SIMEONE wins Spanish Super Cup

Diego SIMEONE has coached Atletico Madrid to yet another title. With the first match finishing in a 1-1 draw at the Bernabeau, SIMEONE's team scored early through a MANDZUKIC goal and went on to win the second match 1-0 to win the Spanish Super Cup.

SIMEONE was sent off for slightly smacking the fourth official behind the head. But that didn't stop him from encouraging his team. While in the stands, he can be seen walking and pacing around, waving his arms in the air.

Following the match, SIMEONE had this to say:

"Money isn't everything."

Congratulations to Diego SIMEONE, Cristian ANSALDI and Emiliano INSUA.

Enzo Perez covered di Maria and did pretty good job, the reason argentina lost is because they didn't take their chances, argentina were much better then Germany but they couldn't score, the team did well with out him defensively

I agree with you kh their is no doubt di maria is a fantastic player and one of the best world wide at his style of game.
As I said I blame burnout from a very long season for him at r/m and he gave them everything and more only to run out of gas come w/c time sadly for us.

pablo.d: You might be right, maybe Di Maria would not have made a difference but his reputation speak otherwise..Yes he gave away the ball 51 times against Switzerland but at the same time it was his pace dashing into the Switzerland 18 yard box enable him to score off Messi assist..I don't see no other player on Argentina squad (or in world football) who could have made that sprint from the half line all the way into the Swiss 18 yard box just in time for Messi assist..Another thing you're forgetting, with Di Maria on the pitch, it would have kept Lahm from going forward for the entire game..Di Maria attacking and defensive abilities were missing for Argentina and anyone who denies this just haven't seen him played over the years..Nobody in world football can cover as much ground as Di Maria on a pitch.

Simeone ban is excessive, Real Madrid players and managers did worse by assaulting other managers and players but no body bothered to ban them

On paper di maria should have made a difference but before he got injured he was very poor really only being good for about 30 minutes, he even had time to set a new world record for losing the ball in one game(51 times).
Their is no guarantee he would suddenly found his form if he played in the final.
For me he seemed burned out after a long season for r/m and they reward him by selling him.
to the point and as the counter attacking game was so important/crucial to us why was no one used to try to do d/m job.

Yes, DiMaria would have made a huge difference in the final had he played, the least of which would have been taking on some of the Krauts who were marking Messi all game long.

Simeone received an 8 game ban for his ejection and what he did afterwards.

I have a feeling that IF Di Maria had played in the final of the WC , Argentina would've won in 90 mins. Simple. He was and will be perfect partner to the great Lio Messi in years to come too.....

Imo, Di Maria must be in top 3 to win Ballon d'Or this year....

I know many people here don't rate Alvarez highly but I think he is reaalllly good.

If Inter are selling him....that seems like a silly move but a smart one for Athletico

Alvarez,Botta,Icardi look good to me.

From an Argentina fan Perspective Inter has always been a haven for Argentines..and now with their new owners youthful rebuilding process even better!

I'm no fan of Howard Webb but I was surprise he did not get to officiate the final at the world cup..Germany get away with too many dirty plays and you could tell it was getting to our players..Howedes high knee lunge on Zabaleta should have been a straight red..Lavezzi was brutally take down on the edge of the German 18 yard box yet we did not get a foul call...Maybe because of that tackle was the reason Sabella sub Lavezzi..

foolish barca, playing masche @ CB instead of DM.

I know busquets is the hub who gets everything rolling for barca & his ball-recovery and assist for messi's goal was exquisite, but surely barcelona must play mascherano in his natural position.

that professional foul suits a defensive-midfielder, not a centre-back who is the last man.

wake up barca, before more cut & thrust teams like madrid, atletico, chelsea or liverpool run your backline ragged.

All I'm saying Argentina was just one goal away from the title..If we had scored and won the world title then no one would have cared if Hiigy and Aguero had one leg playing on at the world cup..No one would have cared if Sabella sub off Lavezzi..Its just one of those days..Our team was just not healthy enough and to make things worse, we played more minutes than Germany at the world cup leading up to the final.

sadly their was no attacking plan b.
it would hbeen been so different for us at the w/c had every one been fit and in form...sigh...

for me we knew about some of these injuries back in jan, we had already qualified for the w/c with 2 games to spare and it was chance to try other options but sadly sabella had his team in his head already and was not going to change it no matter what.

"Absolutely wonderful, and like others have pointed out tremendous work rate to go with it. Best of all it feels like there's still a lot more to come from him"
"his second assist was so good, running diagonally to then play the perfect ball was sublime"
"was a real menace dribbling at the heart of QPR's shambolic defence and made some intelligent runs"
"Lamela creates that excitement every time he touches the ball"

"Lamela had a £30 million game

For the first time in the Premier League, Erik Lamela justified his giant transfer fee. The Argentine was confident, energetic, creative and carried plenty of threat throughout, assisting two goals for a rampant Spurs side. He delivered a pinpoint cross from a corner for Eric Dier to score, and then made a wonderful run across the pitch before another super ball to Nacer Chadli. His passing and touch was outstanding, and having looked like an improved player over the last few weeks, he will get the chance to show just how good he is next weekend against Liverpool"

kh: I do agree with you the injury's really hurt us pre wc and then into the w/c, add messi still recovering and di maria during the tournament but apart from the last 2 we had plenty of warning on the injury front to either try other players or a plan "B" on the attacking front but we did neither.

it was unreal how may got injured and unbelievable that this could happen all at once but sabella got it wrong by gambling every thing on all of them being fit before the w/c started and that was a mistake.

Argentina had this world cup won until all the players start suffering injuries at the mid/end of the season..Lamela missed the world cup due to injury..Higuain, Aguero, Di Maria, Messi, Gago,Banega, Palacio all had injuries leading up to the world cup..The health of our main players, especially in attack was our down fall at the world cup..Hopefully we will have an healthy squad for Copa America..

* Really can't understand why Mourinho don't make a bid for him. He's one of the few Mourinho appreciated(Though I'm not a fan of that proclaimed special one)
* I have a feeling that he will perform better in La liga since it's slow paced and technical.Hope my beloved Valencia sign him.If not Valencia any one of Villareal,Sevilla,Atletico,Sociedad or Atletico Madrid would be ok.

Agreed with you Kid...and what are u guyz talking about skywalker and el principe.... really....u skywalker u mentioned few reasons of substitute players, but the main thing is u have to have some quality player to do this, i think exactly that he was missing in barca, and he almost made barca champion with that rubbish team where pique, busquets and pedro are starter.... areal joke,
without messi and masche,,,, barcelona is nothing....so dont judge tata in this way

Skywalker: You still saying Tata messed up with his subs..The thing is, its the subs that mess up Tata...

Sorry I can't take your last paragraph serious.

Tata - Barca team defeated Real Madrid twice last season, the same team that defeated Atlety during the UCL final..

Simeone out smarted Barcelona, its simple as that..Messi as I said before, was the key to all of Barcelona success..You can talk about sub here, or sub there, all day long, but at the end of the day Barcelona had a rubbish bench, arguably the worse in Europe last season..

'' It's not simply about the players, it's about having an understanding that something isn't working and the need to change it. '' Yea, are you talking about the Barca board? I guess you blame Tata for the Barca ban too?

My friend, its simple, Tata had a bunch of rubbish players at Barcelona..

I'm not a Barca fan, so I don't care one bit about Barca at the moment..I just hope Messi and Masche stay healthy for Argentina sake..

KidultHood.. the purpose of subs in soccer are to (a) replace injured/tired players (b) tactical - change formation (b) technical - change flow, kill time (c) transitional - change rhythm, tempo and speed (d) physical - change type of player based on (b) to (d)

Forget (a). For the other 3, Tata had less to work with than Simeone at Athletico for example. Yet watch how his switches after half time vs Barca last year in the CL and in the Liga absolutely changed the game on its head (granted they weren't subs here, but the point being Simeone saw issues with his squad and changed them up, either tactically or formation wise to go after Barca's weak points).

Tata, neither at Barca nor at Paraguay, showed that level of fortitude, foresight and/or flexibility to adapt to changing conditions. It's not simply about the players, it's about having an understanding that something isn't working and the need to change it. Repeatedly last year, Barca were out coached in second halves and this a worry that Tata needs to address with Argentina.

Tata Argentina squad will be >>>>>>>>>>> Barca squad from last season and currently..

What subs did Barcelona had? Pedro, Montoya, Tello and Sergi? I mean, really? Tata did what he could with a bad situation..You guys forgetting that Tata inherited the same team that Bayern hammer 7 - 0 the season before..Barcelona made no changes to the squad except adding Neymar..

Its not Tata fault Barcelona did not sign any defenders that he requested..Its not Tata fault Fabregas was a JOKE, its not Tata fault that Pedro was a JOKE all season..You guys need to know that Messi was the main reason Barca won majority of those trophies under Pep and the La Liga, triumphant season under Tito...Messi got injured and Barca season went down hill, its simple as that..

I'm not here trying to convince anyone to support Tata, or try to say Tata is a perfect guy..But can we please stop using the Barca season as some reason why Tata will fail with the NT..You guys are forgetting that Tata won the Argentine Premier with Newells..Took Paraguay to the 2010 world cup while finishing 2nd in CONMEBOL qualifiers a few points behind Brazil in the standings..Tata team defeat Brazil and Argentina back in 2010 WCQ..Tata Paraguay top their group in South Africa, sending Italy home in the group stage..Tata Paraguay was one of the best teams that played against Spain in 2010 and was a penalty away from the semifinal..

Tata like all human beings have flaws and will make mistakes..I won't judge Tata on the basis of what happen at Barcelona last season or the fact that he called up the same world cup roster bar maybe 3 players..

The question is, if Tata had a great team last season, then why is the club giving Luis Enrique all these new signings? Why not let Enrique use the same exact side Tata had to deal with last campaign?

Some guys logic on here, Tata did not defeat Atletico last season so he's a bad coach..Ancelloti failed to defeat Atlety twice in a week, ''he's alright just one of those days.'' Mourinho failed to defeat Atlety twice last season, oh, he's still the ''special one.''

well written el principe.

My biggest issue with Tata at Barca (if we all here give him a pass for the Barca board not allowing him to play to his style) was that he made terrible second half substitutions. Not only did his subs fail to make measurable impacts, his formations continued to remain the same and there was no positive gained from the changes. hope at the NT level this changes.

Your post on Dunga was right on. In fact, it was the 3-0 Copa America final in 2007 that left the biggest mark. It was a foul and counter spectacle which Sabella (less cynically) tried to implement for Argentina.

Give Sabella credit for one thing. He realized in South America, the travel, home conditions and general chaotic nature of the game allows for open 4-3-3 play, but come the WC, it was always a matter of time before he resorted to a defensive approach. Now his 5-3-2 in qualifying didn't work at the WC but he was flexible enough to change to 4-4-2 (albeit thanks to help from injuries). And no matter what anyone says, the game was there to be won on Leo's left foot in the second half vs Germany.

Hope Tata marries Sabella's pragmatism with a little more creative intent in the final third for Leo to do the damage.

el Principe...well written expected that you forget to mention the last glory period of Argentine football and its coach whom was wonderful defensing the counter after Bilardo and before Sabella!
His name was Alfio Basile, who led Argentina to three consecutive FIFA tournament titles, (first to do it before Spain), the 1991 Copa America, 1992 Confederation Cup and the 1993 Copa America Titles. (FIFA didn't recognize the Confederations Cup at the time so Argentina doesn't get credit for 3 straight FIFA titles like Spain.) However, Argentina went 32 matches without a lose until the nightmare in Buenos Aires against Colombia.

As I read, some of you are either pro Martino or anti Martino. I have to admit, I am not a fan of Martino. I know you guys would say that he was great before coaching Barcelona, but I don't care. I do not see anything special about him at all.

However, now that he is appointed as our manager, I have to support him instead of hoping for Argentina not doing well and come back here and say "I told you!". If he can win the Copa and Copa 2016 or even continue for the next 4 years, that'd be good. But if he ends up not that good and we will appoint the best coach in the world today, Diego Simeone as long as it is within 2 years (or even a year) before the World Cup 2018, it'd be OK too.

Simeone is the first coach who made Mourinho "the inferior one". Mou should be ashamed calling himself the special one when his team was outplayed, outsmarted badly by Atletico last year.

Back to Martino, the biggest challenge for Martino as someone who is influenced by Bielsa with his possession football is this: can he defend the counter attack?

Sabella was the first coach since Bilardo who managed to work this out wonderfully. Not even Pekerman could be that good at playing counter attack defense. Sabella was the first one since Bilardo. Wait is counter attack defense that important? YES!

If Martino will play high line defense as most teams (other than Germany or Spain) will likely defend deep and go for counter attacks when hearing that the likes of Messi, Aguero, Higuain, or Di Maria would be playing, that'd be suicidal. Martino must show his versatility. Just look at the best coach of ball possession today, Josep Guardiola with around 7 World Champion players in his line up when facing the perfect counter attack Madrid last year. It was what? 6-0 in aggregates or something?

For me personally, that's what I want to see from Martino. Up until last year, I adore ball possessions tactics, but I changed my mind last year after seeing Real Madrid flawless counter attack tactic that humiliated the perfect ball possessions Bayern Munchen. Now I love counter attack tactic as I believe ball possessions give us beauty, but counter attack give us trophies.

Germany, due to the huge influence of Pep Guardiola can be both now. They are still great at counter, if they want to play that way, but at the same time they are good at keeping the ball possessions. Germany counter attack worked wonderfully against a proud Brazil team when they won 7-1, but their ball possession tactic worked against us knowing that without Di Maria, we were not that much of a threat in counter.

Dunga's Brazil was a superb counter attack team. A complete opposite to Scolari's team.
Remember this: Dunga's Brazil beat Basile's ball possessions Argentina 3-0 in a friendly just after the 2006 World Cup. Expect Dunga tactic to be similar to that of Van Gaal Netherlands in WC 2014. They would expect the opponent to attack them and would counter attack.

When facing a team like Netherlands 2014, if we rely on ball possessions, no way we could beat them. Just absolutely no way. Just look Brazil in the 3rd place match. It's not just they lost Neymar there or they were ruined morally. No it is just Netherlands tactic (similar also to Simeone's) is like an anti virus to the virus called "ball possession".

So Martino.... show us something. Don't get carried away Martino fans here. If he does bad, have courage to say he does bad. If he's just one of those coaches who make the team look good, win big, but lost in the final or crucial stages when facing equally strong teams, well we have 10,000 + other coaches in Argentina who can do the same.
