Gerardo MARTINO set for Argentina job

Gerardo MARTINO is set to be the new Argentina coach. MARTINO met with the AFA where he was reportedly offered the Argentina job. All signs point to him taking over.

Should he become the new coach, Gabriel HEINZE is strongly rumored to be part of his coaching staff.

Jorge THEILER, currently in charge of the youth team at Newell's is set to take over the U17 job. He was part of Hugo TOCALLI's coaching staff from the 2007 team which won the U20 World Cup.

I disagree with the opinion that Martino is 4-3-3 believer. And also that he loves high pressing attacking football.Truth is that Martino is adaptable. He adapts with whatever he gets. With Paraguay,he played defensive and ugly football. With barca at first he played direct football, then tiki-taka.

I don't understand what is stopping AFA to have an official announcement of Tata's appointment? We need a coach sooner than later to start building for the Copa next year, as well as WC qualifiers & friendlies. There seems to be no better option than Tata, as Pekerman is a proven failure! Why just not bring him on board ASAP?

Di Maria,Aguero,Messi and Higuain can not play in the same team without making the team tactically flawed and defensively thin.On the other hand,if both Higuain and Aguero starts,we don't have any quality sub.One of them has to sit.It should depend on the form.Aguero is superior talent. He is unplayable when in form.On the other hand,Higuain is a target man, good movement and teamplay, scores pretty regularly unless it is a very important match like wc final.

Our best left back other than Rojo is not Ansaldi. It is Santi Garcia from Werder Bremen. On the other hand,Ansaldi will be 31 at 2018.

Martino's a 4-3-3 believer, he can benefit from Sabella's work in the defense. Maybe just a slight change, for example, to play Rojo with Garay as central backs and let Asnaldi play the left back role.

In the midfield, according to his past, he may probably use 2 box-2-box with 1 DM. Enzo Perez will be the best option of the 3nd midfield, along with Maschereno and Di Maria. He already proved a lot with his club during last season and with the NT during WC.

In attack, obviously the main task is to bring the full potential of Messi. The best thing is to have someone creative playing behind him who has good vista and is able to play simple without keeping too much the ball. I think Pastore will be the best option.

My dream team will be: Romero(Cabellero, Rulli)-Zabaleta,Garay(Musacchio),Rojo(Fazio),Asnaldi-Perez(Banega),Maschereno(Biglia),Di Maria(Ocampos)-Pastore(Lamela)-Messi(Iturbe),Higuain(Icardi)

There are so many great players in this NT, can't wait for their next team!

We must change one of Orion and Andujar immediately,as age is catching them up.One senior can stay for another year or so.Both Orion and Andujar were giving advice and encouraging Romero before the penalty shoot out. They are good team player and helpful. We can use one of them to mentor Rulli.Rulli is with Sociedad now with season long loan.I hope that he will flourish with them.

Cartabia is a matured player for his age.We have a lot of wing players.Cartabia,Lamela,Salvio and Ocampos can be immediately tried with nt.Botta needs to find his form with Inter,he was great until injury.Luque and Centurion are also very promising prospects. And finally we should see what Perreyra can do with Juventus. He is extremely versatile, very good at crossing and dribbling.

@ Mafiaso.. agreed bro....Musacchio is one of the consistent defender in la liga for past 4 season. and height doesn't matter, he is good in air, i do not seen him made any mistakes in set pieces.
@ gilly> this ratings are nothing but personal views, if they let us to give a ratings, there must be more then 10 Argentine players, i an sure about that, so do not believe this Europe based bullshits.

Good luck for Tata, he is young, progressive and very naive person, he has a very good attacking sense, while in defense there is not to much to work, he has only to find a perfect partner of Garay, i think Musacchio will be the perfect fit

Masch didnt extend his contract just to sit on the bench when he clearly is miles ahead of busquets at the moment.. and moreover Busquets is only effective with tiki taka tactis... and i dont think barca will stick to vintage tiki taka anymore... Barca will rotate players this time around so i guess masch will get plenty of time .. Worst case scenario he will ask for a transfer and there are plenty of clubs out there who will sign him in a blink of an eye...

Going off topic : Read a bleachers report by Mark Jones on " 50 most exciting teenagers in world football". According to him, there are only 2 Argentines in that list - Augustín Allione #50 and Angel Correa #22.

Now , however this report doesn't mean anything really but still I am a little sad to see there are so few Argentineans and plenty of Germans, French, Belgians and even English making the list... We are Argentina, we are a super power of world football... We must get down to our grass root level now to dig some new rock stars ...

A big hello to everybody!
While the opinions are on both sides of the coin, as an avid Barca fan, I had the good fortune to watch "Tata" closely for the past season...the first half was spell-bounding...and Barca seemed to have lost steam in one particular week by losing three key matches. Regardless, they had the chance to clinch glory on D-day...and it just did not happen...it has less to do with Tata's footballing brain and more to do with Barca's the-then lackluster backline, and, if I may dare, the plight of injury in certain players, given an upcoming world cup.

Tata will do fantastic with the NT. He connects well with the players, and will carry on the good work that Sabella started...look forward to seeing Eric Lamela and Enzo Perez settling down...am still seeking the "right" partner for Garay in central defense...

In any case, looking forward to the WC Final re-match...hope that we can show the Germans the "Real McCoy".

@mafioso i agree we should try Musacchio, he is only 6 ft tall but so is Thiago Silva. I'm glad you mentioned Pezella as this guy was an absolute beast in the U-20 world cup and oozed class and leadership. I'm hoping he turns into a Thiago silva where he doesn't do anything until he's about 25-26 then bursts onto the scenes.

Dinucci: I agree, Masche should have seek a way out of Barca..Busquet is just a pretty baller nothing else, if the game is simple Busquet will do well but against stronger mids he usually look lackluster..

Luis Enrique: “I see Mascherano as a center back and midfielder. The base of the team should be competitive.”

This is not encouraging at all..

the world cup rematch is coming up. without fifa interference and corrupt italian refereeing.

how can the world cup final referee be from italy when half of serie a play in empty stadiums because of corruption.

and fifa got the result they wanted, a european win.

now the real world cup game is coming up, and when argentina trounces them, the germans can hold on to the world cup for us for the next 4 years.

Chainsaw: it is, what it is..I mean, I don't think the outcome would have been different if Icardi was on the team..Most of Germany 17 goals came from midifelder/false 9 players..Klose the only true #9 on the German scored only 2 goals at the world cup..James Rodriguez is not a #9 yet he scored 6 goals at the world cup..Germany took only one striker at the world cup and it was a 36 years old guy.

You guys like to talk about a plan B...How about we have players that are goal scoring midfielders like the Germans and Dutch players..

Argentina problem at the world cup was that they didn't have goal scoring defenders and midfielders PERIOD..

Goal scoring defenders played a huge part in the last few world cups:

- Puyol scored the winner against Germany during the semis back in 2010.

- Thuram scored the only 2 goals for France against Croatia during the semis back in 1998

- Grosso scored against Germany in 2006 during the semis (Grosso scored the crucial goal in extra time) and other Italian defenders scored throughout the tournament.

- Hummels scored against France during the quarterfinal stage in 2014.

If I'm not mistaken, the last time Argentina scored from a set piece it was Federico Fernandez against Brazil back in 2012..Ayala goal against Germany was a perfect example in 2006..Although we did not create many chances back then, it was a defender who step up and took the initiative.

Defenders and midfielders are suppose to be apart of any team plan B relating to a football team at the world cup..

Kidulthood, once again you're trying to justify Sabella's decisions. Bringing only Palacio as the sub for Higuain and Aguero was a bad idea at the first place. There wasn't even one, I repeat "ONE" #9 on the bench in case Higuain and Aguero struggle to replace them. Sabella's main idea was defending and counter attack and for attacking merely rely on the indiviual's brilliance of the Fab 4. He had no alternative for the likes of Higuain and Aguero. Palacio is no #9 and he missed two glorious chances at the semi and final.

Making an excuse by saying "Icardi did nothing during this preseason to say he would have made a difference" shows how desperately you try to defend Sabella's decisions. Now people are judging players base on preseasons??! Seriously??!! ok

This is my feeling since 2006..I have not watch replays or highlights of either the 2006 & 2010 wc quarterfinal games up to this day..I have not watch replays or highlights of the 2014 final thus far..For me , these games does not exist and I try to wipe them from my memory by not watching them ever again..

I did not even watch the medal ceremony, as soon as the ref blew the final whistle, I shut my TV down..

You guys are now complaining about Di Maria playing his heart out for Real Madrid..Do you guys remember how some of you were saying that Di Maria need playing time before the world cup? It would have been best for Argentina if Di Maria had sat on the bench for most game during the entire second half of the season.

Guys I know Higuain and Aguero were not fit going into the world cup but they were in good enough shape to make the squad..The thing is, let's say Higgy and Aguero did not go to the world cup, then we would be hearing the same question on why Sabella did not take Higgy and Aguero to the world cup...Tevez was a BUST for me, he did not make a difference in the last 2 world cups and he also failed to lead Juventus out of the UCL group stage scoring 0 goals last season..Tevez also failed last season during the UEFA cup scoring only 1 goal that was away to Benfica which did not make a difference for his team who went out in the end to Benfica..

Icardi and Iturbe did nothing during this preseason for me to say they would have made a difference..They played in all the games for Roma and Inter yet they failed to make an impact..If you can't make an impact during preseason then how in the world would they have made a difference for Argentina at the world cup in a more intense, and high pressure tournament? Don't tell me its just preseason, just look at Zuculini, his performances for City in the States have solidify his contract this weekend with the club..

Argentina ACE was LAMELA and unfortunately he got injured..Just imagine Lamela (not Icardi or Iturbe) came on in extra time against Germany? We might have had a different outcome..Like Simoene said, ''Germany was just meant to win the darn thing not Argentina''(paraphrasing a little bit here)

Di Maria to Manchester United.... Sounds great.... Ferguson wanted him before Real Madrid offered him the big money.... Now its realisation time.
.
Di Maria alongside Van Persie and others .. a force to recon with ä proper guide in Van Gaal.
.
Athletico Madrid need än Orchestrar to pull the strings.... Maybe ä big name in the market.... That could be their missing puzzle. Simeone does ä great Job in replacingexiting stars.... He is cool at that....
.
Rojo as ä CB for NT seems än interesting option as age is catching up with Demichellis.
.
Very upset with Aguero..... Wondering whether he forced his inclusion for the finals... Fren u made us wait another 4 years.... Did Aguero do ä Tevez?????
.
Martino should call the youngsters.....
.
AFA by all means should dump Bilardo..... Is he ä National Selector & Formationists & Tatiction????.... Then what is the coach for u bilardo?????.... If u take these decisions then, well u coach the team..... Why appoint another and then cut short his resume....?
.
Why was Martino interviewed @ Grondona z house????? Is that AFA z headquarter???? Didnt seem right to me....

aurelius, great to see you back again old friend!

Liverpool seems to be interested in Lavezzi and Icardi! (although i doubt inter will let icardi leave... they have made Icardi their poster boy for the future...) Watching Inter without Cambiasso, Samuel, Milito and pupi is gonna be weird... true Legends!

btw, what do you guys make of the new bid for Di Maria by ManU? They seem to be really hungry for Di Maria!

however, i am really surprised that city hasn't made a splash this season... I would have imagined city would go after a player like Angel!

Pastore had a good game. I also thought Ansaldi had a solid game two days ago. If Ansaldi does great... would we convert Rojo Back to his natural position of a CB? couple him with Garay? worth pondering!

Hoping Zuculini wrecks havoc tomorrow... hope he starts!

We have enough upcoming talents for every position, but not for the position 2-the right sided cb who leads the backline, game reader, intercepts the opponent moves before they reach the danger zones i.e Ayala,Lucio.

Before wc FF was given the responsibility to do the job.He is decent at game reading but lacks character and discipline. He makes sliding tackles from back often, which means opponent has already reached the danger zone before he noticed or he was dribbled past.

Demichelis did a good job when he replaced FF.But he is 33.We need a replacement immediately. But there is no ideal replacement atm.

Fazio,Basanta,Garay all are 6.Musaacchio can be an option but aerially he is not the strongest. We can also try Gonzalo Rodriguez. He is a good defender, but he 30.Lisandro Lopez is a fine prospect, but not yet ready.I don't hear Pezzella's name anymore.Mammana is only 17.So we do not have many great option here.

For me we should try Musacchio here.He has aerial weakness, but for this position there are no young but matured player other than him.And ground defending is more important for this position.

Come on Martino... He should take Argentina to Copa champion next year. He is young (51) and has experiences in world cup and also can handle pressure.
He only needs to reshape just a little bit for Argentina that has been molded greatly by Sabella.
We need to find DM to succeed Masche & Biglia, and center defender for replacing ageing Demichellis... We may want to try Mussachio, Otamendi, and Lisandro Lopez.

About Pastoriza. He is from the same town as former greats Carlos Peucelle and Fernando Redondo.

But like several youngsters on the fringes of the seleccion he grew up in Spain in Galicia.

He has just turned 18 I think but has already played one game for Betis. He has been a prolific scorer and creator before that has great pace, technique and an eye for goal. Unsurprisingly his idol is Messi although he is much taller.

He plays either off the main striker or on the wing.

Maxi Rolon has impressed enough at Barca to joing the Juvenil A squad and has scored and created a few. Decent technique and pace and likes to come off the left wing.

With regards to Martino it would be an excellent appointment. Same sort of character as Sabella in being reserved, well mannered but with a keen footballing brain.

I hope it is a long term project as he wants with complete control over all aspects of the seleccion and age group teams in order to build a cohesive team unit going forward and bring in the youngsters he wants into his systems.

Heinze would be a good deputy. Well liked, friends from his time at Newells and a determined character in his own right who can delegate with the players.

However I hope Martino appoints proper coaches for the u20 and u17 teams considering there are qualifiers and World Cups next year.

Theiler did a pretty decent job with the u15, I do wonder where Matias Roskpof will emerge as he was pretty decent in that tournament.

msi there are some concerns with the youth coaching at several clubs which do need addressing. Goalkeeping coaching in particular needs to be addressed as it is very poor. But you are overly pessimistic on the youngsters even those with genuine ability.

its was tragically specular sadly for us but its was a big risk taking players who are/have been injured as not playing means you lose your match sharpness and none of the 4 really looked match sharp, some worse then others like kun gago and hig looked way off the match sharpness and the pace of the game.

sabella took a risk (4 risks actually)and those risks did not pay off.

It is true sabella made a mistake in not having plan b despite knowing some of the forwards were unfit, but even that no body in their wildest dream expected that they will underperform that bad, even suarez who was unfit did his part in the games he played, zero contribution was not expected from likes of aguero

its was unbelievable that 4 of our key players came into the w/c with injuries being messi, gago, hig and kun then add di maria to the mix during it.

it was worse that some of us on here kept saying we need to do the following before the w/c
replace gago or at least find a decent back up.
a back up striker as pal and lev will not score you goals at n/t level.
a creative mid fielder to connect the mid to the strikers
no plan b.
not to rely of messi to do it all on the attacking front.

sureit is to late now and for all of these the blame has to fall at sabella's feet.

Pablo.d: it is strange thing that our forwards failed, no one expected it, it is was the only area were we had it all, aguero is the worst of all, the guy contributed nothing on the team, actually he made the team worse, I hope martino never calls him again, even Fred contributed better then him, the sad part is we will see him now banging goals for man city, we will see what martino does but bringing new blood will be wise choice

for me 2 really good points
A: How could one of the finest collections of attacking players ever assembled at international level produce a grand total of two goals in four knockout games?

B: Argentina are fast developing an inferiority complex at international level.
sadly id have to say true.

interesting ranking despite finishing 2nd
"No 10
Argentina 19/25
Skill level: 8/10
Entertainment value: 6/10
Legacy: 5/5

OK, so they reached the final. And yet, you have to ask: what was the point? How could one of the finest collections of attacking players ever assembled at international level produce a grand total of two goals in four knockout games? How could a team like that be as unwatchable as that? Argentina are fast developing an inferiority complex at international level, and this joyless showing did little to shatter it"

Just saw a highlights reel of Reims vs PSG. Pastore's assists were really impressive. He exactly knew where Ibra will be for the first goal & the 2nd one was a crafty chip over Reims defense. Impressive start to the season for him.

Absence of Attacking midfielders was our weakness in the WC. looks like we have plenty to choose from. We need at least 2 playing in the first 11. May be Di maria & Lamela are our first & second choices with Gaitan, Pastore & Ocampos providing backups.
Any selection should be based on a 'Look Forward' appraoch keeping 2018 WC in mind.

Argentina midfield is looking really strong at the moment..Something Tata Martino can build on..

Midfield options at the moment:

Masche
Enzo
Biglia
Di Maria
Pastore
Gaitan
Lamela
Ocampos
Zuculini
Kranevitter

I believe that Pastore can start in a 3 man midfield.Pastore has improved his defensive game to a significant level.Pastore,Masche and Biglia midfield can be a option for us.It will depend on his form which I believe will be consistent form this season. It is not a dark prediction or wish,Pastore has been very spirited to show his worth from the beginning of pre season. He looks determined.

Tata will be a good choice, as long as the repeat of the Barca Mess doesn't happen to him in Argentina! Directors ordering him to play certain players and certain style (Neymar & backward possession football), no Catalan media bullying him and no Barca board that basically left him out dry and did nothing to support him...

I hope he would be free to select his team and implement his style.

one thing that was really impressive about tata when he coached Paraguay was that, he played Argentina & Brazil 6 times and only lost once, winning 3. If he could take Paraguay the the QF of a WC (loosing unfairly to spain) and to then to the a Copa final the next year... i could only imagine what he could do with Argentina...

Winning the COPA would be a must for him.

I wish him the best, i sure hope we could celebrate a trophy a year from now.

Tata is the best option for now if we consider all the factors-coaching style, experience, age, availability etc.And we will know it for sure if he is the right man to do it after the copa'15.If not we can go for Simione then,I believe that cholo will be more approachable by that time.

Another thing we need to consider that AFA is unsettled now, they are not ready for hard negotiation like Simione.

As for me, I trust Martino for the job.Good luck Tata!

Hear it from me, we won't see him anywhere near the NT for the next 8 years.

Good luck to Tata.
I agree with most posters that he should build on Sabella's work. As Pablo D said, he should improve creativity in midfield and support attack more often. Bringing in new names is a must for the future. It will be tough, there is only a handful of friendlies until the copa america. Time for training is limited to just a couple of days before each friendly. And with opponents like angstgegner Germany and arch rivals Brazil they cannot be called friendlies....

realistically no as he does not seem to be on the afa list but he needs to be asked to let him decide, not others decide for him.

A:he is possible the best option

B: the afa should always be inquiring about the best available.

C: as the Argentine job does not come up every year and he may only get one chance at it, he needs to be able to say yes or no as his stock is high now and who knows if will get another chance at the job.

in a nut shell he needs to be asked to let him decide what to do.

D: he is very very patriotic and it would be very hard for him to say no as he has stated this is some thing he does want to do but as I read on espn he said "ive heard the rumors about the n/t job and they are flattering but no one has ever asked me" to me I read into it, ask me and we will go from their-witch way who knows? but he should be asked

this is a winning manager and a in form winning manager and for me the best is he wins cups and that is what the w/c is, its not what you do for 4 years its what you do for 6 weeks, he has also proved his teams can have staying power by winning the league but as sim said a few weeks ago "no one has asked me"

argentuban: The topic was about Tata and Simeone..How did Germany became apart of Argentina coaching discussion?

Pablo.D: you're right, but how would Simeone solve our attacking problems when Atletico barely score goals last season..The Job of the AM players was to hoist the ball in the opponent box so Costa could get on it..

I have the utter most respect for Simeone but one good season in Spain does not make you a great NT coach..You guys ever wonder why Alex Ferguson, Pep and Mourinho never try to coach either England, Portugal and Spain..Rjkaard was successful with Barcelona but failed with the Netherlands..Before you guys start anointing Simeone just give Tata a chance.

I want to see Simeone defend his crown in Spain and prove to Barca and Real Madrid that he's the real deal and not fluke or one season wonder.

Tata was influenced by Bielsa style, however Tata is less stubborn. He need to build strong back supporting technical coaching staff. Bring in the young coach like Heinze and GK coach. Be an open minded, travel far and select the best available players who give their souls to N/T.

Sabella have built a good foundation, no need to reform and start over again, just add the new taste and give space for new creativity. We missed a lot of names that was neglected by Sabella. For certain, Icardi,Iturbe,Willy,Pastore and Lamela will get his chance under Tata
