I have to say a strikers job is to score goals any way he can, its about being in the correct place at the correct time and hig did that to perfection in the 10 w/c.
as ive said before hig he can score when he does not have to think about it but give him time to think he panics.
lots of great strikers did nothing but score tap ins like g.muller and gary lineker and no one denies them their goals, both were "6 yard masters" and are considered legend's of the game.

we do need to try other options up front as none of our front 4 have been doing what we expect from them and that's scoring goals on a regular basis.

@kid, did you watch the goals scored by higuain in 2010 world cup?? Like all of them were tap ins, or rebound goals that would be scored by literally any strikers in the world. No doubt higuain is a world class striker but he's not the answer to our NT success, I wish to god that he would prove me wrong, but that didn't happen, and he did somehow cost us the world cup by missing that sitter...Not sure about aguero, his work rate now is absolutely terrible. Unless he improves his work rate and fitness, he's best as a super sub to score the screamer, that's about it.

When you have someone like Messi who could barely run nowadays, you need all of the players to have exceptional work rate to compensate for that. If you had to choose between aguero/messi, you know the answer. To me, I feel like angel Correa will be immense in the NT in the future, he plays like aguero+di maria, pass first before shooting unlike tevez. He's got really good work rate and track back and very nice in linking with players and got vast array of skills set. If he could improve his shooting skill, he will be really really good, one of the best players in the world, so we will see how that unfold with him at atletico madrid. Players like Tevez (shoot first before passing) will always clash with messi, correa to me will link well with messi. Cannot wait for that to happen.

@Thinker: I'm no fan of Real Madrid, so I don't care what they wear on the pitch...I was never a Barcelona supporter nor Madrid supporter..Pablo Aimar & Valencia was the reason I started watching La Liga in the early 2000...What I do respect about Real is that they always show interest in Argentinean players than say Barcelona, although its not the case this season with Real Madrid..

To be honest, if Messi was at Barcelona then most people would not be offended by me calling Barcelona a JOKE of a club..

@arg2014: I don't agree with you one bit on what you said about Higgy and Aguero..

You bash Higgy for scoring against Mexico and Korea in 2010 yet Messi failed to score against the same teams.Messi ending the same tournament with 0 goals..So your best case against Higgy is that is goals came against weak teams like Korea and Mexico? You can say the same about Messi against Iran, Bosnia and Nigeria in 2014..

Higuain has 5 goals from 2 world cups..Messi has 5 goals from 3 world cups..Higgy still has a better goal per game ratio at the world cup than Messi..

Aguero was not a major part of the 2010 team, I don't remember Aguero starting any games in South Africa..So saying Aguero was major player at the 2010 world cup is false..I agree that Aguero did not enter the 2014 world cup in the best of conditions..

"What if aguero and higuain play exceptional this season?"

well then they will force them in the team... but we need to have 2 starting xi .. each one as good as the other ... next world cup shouldnt be "messi and his team". We have so many talented players its shouldn't be difficult for the coach to build 2 good teams.. so just incase if our star players get injured just becofe the world cup we have a tried and tested backup... like germany was in this world cup... We need to build two teams.

@Kid-- You don't see a lot of things and then you whine like a baby when the results don't go your way... How has Barcelona become a "Joke" of a club??? do you read Madrid tabloids??? or are you fan of their pink jersey???

yes i do agree that 20 million for an oldie like Mathieu is a bit too much but it is still a better signing than 50 million for David Luiz... Mussachio,Rojo would've been much better signings but not all transfers go according to script.. but you guys have suddenly become madrid fans because of their recent success,, and you think their billion dollar squad will sweep all titles???? Madrid bought the world in 2003 and they were expected to dominate the whole decade... in the end,, they Didn't won JACK SHIT,, went 7 years without reaching QF final and was regularly outclassed by a sensational Barca team of Ronaldinho,Messi,Xavi,Iniesta... and after that Dinosaur Perez spend another billion dollars did they finally win a CL in 12 years and they would've lost the final if it wasn't for Di Maria's tremendous courage... and now that they've shamelessly bought James Rodriguez for selling pink jerseys,, I want Di Maria out of Madrid immediately,, Ancelotti will rot him in the bench if he stays...

Real Madrid is a Business corporation... they BUY success because they will never ever have a Youth Academy like Barca's La Masia... and so no matter if Madrid wins their 100th CL,, they will never match Artistry,Magic and Joy of the Barca's 2006 and 2008-12 era... the ultimate Triumph came in 2010 when Barca effortlessly mauled another Billion dollar squad of Madrid 5-0,, playing orgasmic possession futbol coupled with irrepressible Ball retention.. indeed the Barca of 2008-12 is the most unique football team in history,, it created such a spectacle of wonderful artistry and it also won every trophy there is to win... and all of their Core players graduated From La Masia... that is a beauty that Real Madrid cannot achieve even if they Buy the Heaven to play...

@arg2014: You are absolutely correct. I was going to make the same points. You saved me a lot of typing :-)

Eventually, we all want to see Argentina winning major competitions, specially the world cup. So whatever it takes to do that should happen. The priority should be NOT to give importance to big names & try to build a team that can dominate world football for times to come.

It came as a bet after a good season with Colón for Flamengo, dressed shirt 10 of Zico , he convinced the first games, if showed a player good vision and presence, but nowadays he is booking and Flamengo is the last the Brazilian championship, but it's hard to say, because the team is going through a crisis of incredible bad management, this week the LB Andre Santos was attacked for Flamengo fans at the output of Beira Rio stadium
He is a good player but has no potential for NT main.

I think it's time to drop both Kun and Higuain, and here is why:

1) This is not Mexico squad, Argentina has plenty of good attackers out there including locals.
2) Kun is prone to injury and this will be the case every now and then, as for Higuain: You can perform sport after herniated disc surgery, but you will never be on the same level, so Higuian is declining.
3) When both can't deliver at age 26 this WC, and both couldn't win us a decisive game 4 years ago in S.Africa the time they were younger, faster and fresher.....what makes you think they will deliver when they are older?
4) Playing for the NT is not like for the club when you can improve in another season or you stumble in league, but you can prove yourself in UCL or the King's cup......with the national team, you have limited chances to prove, so it won't be controversial to drop big names nowadays from the squad. Tevez failed 2 world cups for same reason, therefore Kun and Higuain should follow.
5) Argentina today is big after reaching the final, so to maintain reputation and go for the title next time, some housekeeping is required especially these two let us down big time. In fact they were the reason we lost world cup, not tactics, not other players or team work.
6) It wasn't that we got eliminated in early stages so we didn't get to see the real kun or Higuain , we played 7 games, and in all tournament they produced none although they were given a big portion of time based on their names and club performance.
7) They were the reason that we didn't see the brilliance of Alvarez or even Maxi because they demanded more playing time, so now nothing is backing that demand anymore, plus they are getting older....by 2018 they will be 30 with more injuries to come and skills to varnish.
8) We saw Di Maria didn't play final game although he was given the green light, but Di Maria knows himself that he wasn't fully recovered and didn't want to jeopardize his established reputation by a mediocre performance. Kun and Higuain on the other hand did instead of giving an opportunity for other players. I mean Germany won the title by midfielders, Argentina should have gone with all healthy midfielders in the final instead of club stars or should I say selfie stars.
9) If you want other new players to join and shine when it matters, then some ego need to sit back or there is no stream for the new blood to circulate.
10) Failing in the final game and the way it was executed by both wasting sitters and clear chances in case of Higuain, or wasting passes, no defending or helping midfielders, and not being an attacking threat in case of Aguero while you see 23 years old german sub midfielder owns the game, I think that is enough to sack both kun & Higuain as they are club players first and 2010 + 2014 were all theirs with no achievement to brag about.

PS: Higuain's 4 goals is 2010 against Korea and Mexico, no big deal for me since any average striker can score against these two (at that time) if he's upfront and was given the golden pass.

Nice moves and still waiting for more. Roma is a club to watch with the signings of the two Argentine diamonds Iturbe and Ledesma. I just hope it doesn't turn to a failure and the coach values their skills and makes them starters.

Ledesma is a kind of a player that we are missing right now, I can call him a fresh Banega and most are comparing him with Roman due to his playing style, but he is quicker.

Iturbe, Ledesma, Ocampos and Icardi all should be around the NT. No more Palacio or Gagothanks to their effort, but we need fresh blood.

As well as Gaitan who was unfairly left in favor of Augusto Fernandez, no comparison!

These names will carry Argentina to its future success and it should be built from now.

The best choice for coaching would be, Sampaoli if he could leave Chile and take care of his NT.

@kid Basanta is actually 30 but that doesn't change the fact that pound for pound he's the best defender Argentina has right now IMO
Even when Rojo was set to miss a game in the WC I wasn't the least bit worried because I knew that Basanta was gonna take his place and make the left side of the field his own.
Infact Basanta impressed me (even more so than usual) with his attitude and his tendency to overlap with lavezzi when going forward, not to mention that his crosses were better than Dimaria's, Rojo's and Lavezzi's all put together.
Like Masch, Biglia and Enzo, Basanta is all grit and spirit and make no mistake that's what got Argentina to the final and that's what will get Argentina it's next senior title.

As for Kun and pipita, well like the rest of you I'm very disappointed in those 2 but just because they didn't light up the WC doesn't mean we should just kick them out to the curb and forget about their incredible contributions for the NT.
Pipita scored 4 goals in the 2010 WC and 9 goals in the 2014 WCQ while kun saved argntina from humiliation on multiple occasions (the copa 11 against bolivia and the WCQ against colombia) and bagged a few goals of his own in the WCQ.
Kun and pipita are world class players who have atleast another world cup in them and after their poor showing in Brazil they both will have something to prove and they will be better for it.
Still, this WC has shown us that kun and pipita are mortal and their starting places are no longer guaranteed and players like lamela, icardi, iturbe etc.... should now openly challenge them for starting places.

When we played The midfield of masch-biglia -Perez, we didn't concede one goal, even the chances for the opposition were very few, that is a very solid midfield, with those three in the middle our defense will relax, and it is up to the attackers to do their job and finish the chances

Guys you are talking about 4 years from now..I'm talking about winning the Copa next year..Basanta is at the perfect age for Copa America.. Basanta is only 28 years old..

Nobody knows what will happen by the time 2018 WCQ qualifiers starts and the actual world cup get going..

Argentina should solely focus on winning Copa america..If we can't win Copa then no way on earth will we win in 2018..We need to put this tournament win under our belt for huge moral boost going into the 2018 wc..I just want us to win a title now, its long over due..We have enough time to experiment new players but noway should we experiment at next year Copa..Only a few changes here and there are needed at the moment..

We have forget how to win tournaments at senior level, that's why keeping Sabella for the 2015 Copa is a BIG deal for me..

DD: thank you sir,
im a kun fan so people don't think im knocking him because of this w/c as its the bigger picture for me and at n/t level im still waiting to see if kun can get it together on a regular basis as so far hes been average where as we watch him at club level looking like a world beater week in and week out, we could almost compere his n/t form to tevezs (minus the grief) who also failed to set the world alight at n/t level despite being stunning at club level for all the teams he has played for.

for me kun needs to prove quickly he can step it up on a regular basis for the n/t or he will be moved aside to let in some one else who spends less time taking "selfies" and more doing the business on the field of play for Argentina.

What if Higuain and Aguero play exceptional in this coming season? Then would you guys be able to keep them out of your preferred Copa America squad? Both Higuain and Aguero are exceptional players. It was bad luck that they were injured just before the tournament and lost fitness. I guess, Sabella knew that his star strikers were out of form and fitness. So, he tried to focus on defence more.

Next year's Copa America will probably be the toughest tournament for any team. Brazil will be stronger in defence and attack. Colombia will be one of the most fearsome teams with Falcao, Jackson, James, Cuadrado. Chile as a host country and with a strong speedy squad will also cause a lot of problems. Uruguay is always dangerous. Ecuador, Mexico, Bolivia, Paraguay. I mean just add Germany and Nederlands to this tournament and you can call it a World Cup. The star names in this tournament are also overwhelming. Messi, Neymar, James, Suarez, Falcao, Sanchez. Who would miss Cristiano? I hope Argentina can produce at least two or three world class attackers/defenders in this tournament. I hope Argentina wins it and then wins the confederation cup beating Germany.

@pablo.d couldn't agree more. You hit the nail on the head.
Kun has been a liability & nothing short of a burden for the NT. Some people here have a fascination towards him, but we judge players by results they have produced for the NT.
Also, no one is talking about drastic measures here. The idea is to keep the CORE (messi, di maria, mascherano, garay, rojo, zabaleta, biglia) intact & give chances to young talents to build a winning combination. It's a process that would happen over a period of 3-4 years.

its not about dissing senior n/t players for me its about recognizing those in form and fit, what they actually offer to the n/t and as well trying new ideas/players etc.
this is exactly what the krauts do, they try new things in the friendlies but i do admit as they have most of their team at b/m or dort its easier to get a team knowing each other.

for me kun at n/t level has been average, far from the kun we see at club level.
hig im a fan of but as a striker hes either scores stunners or if given time to think he becomes like a rabbit in the headlights and panics like we saw in the w/c final from the hum back pass but minuets later finished a fantastic shot to score (sadly just off side).

if we are to go forward towards the 2018 w/c then no stones must left un turned, pick those in form, those who are fit and always have a "wildcard or 2" let the players become hungry for the shirt because no player owns their shirt they are merely keeping it warm for some one else.

the past is the past and as they say on wards and upwards to glory.

I realize the guys here somewhat optimistic, I wish if all the boys surrender what we hoped, but in reality is never easy.

If we are talking about disappointment then Spain should scrap their entire team starting from Iker Cassials, but of course they wont do that..Pique, Ramos,Iniesta, Alba, Costa, Pedro etc were all poor for Spain. So do you think Costa, Iniesta, Pedro, Pique, Ramos and Alba wont be included for the Euro qualifiers? ( I know this is not our business, but I just used them as an example) Aguero and Higuain still have a lot to offer Argentina going forward..I can see if someone said they should give player X and Z a chance on the team..But saying we should drop Aguero and Higuain entirely for player X and Z is just down right madness...If Aguero and Higgy were in their 30's then fine, then their would be a legitimate argument for them to step aside but the guys are in their 20's and Higgy by the way is 1 year younger than Messi, same for Aguero.

Aguero and Higuain are world class players that any national team would want..

You guys need to stop dissing the senior members in the squad for players who are still wearing diapers when it comes to football..I've seen these players at U17 and U20 level both South America and international, and the majority have yet to impress me, mind you, Aguero and co were all stars at youth levels compare to Argentina current crop...

I was very critical of Basanta.
But seeing how it has behaved in the last games of the NT, and how their twisted in Mexico recognizes how a leader playing in the Monterrey and also seeing how he fared well in the Club World Cup in Morocco, the only problem between me and him is age regarding to its speed.
I saw Basanta crossing balls better than Marcos, indeed this is the problem that makes me not be 100% supporter of Rojo.

I would still give him and El Pipita a chance to show what they're made of and lets not forget how great Higuian played in the not so distant past.

I would love to see or hear somebody from ManCity addressing the Kun injury-prone issue and how they going to tackle it this season!!

@Dinucci: Aguero has been a HUGE disappointment for me & his fitness has been always a concern. I am not in favor of seeing him playing for the NT at all. PArdon me if I am hurting your feelings here.
As for Lavezzi, I do like him, but feel that we need to start building a team keeping WC2018 in mind. Lavezzi is already 29. We really need some young talents coming into the NT who can score goals consistently. Lavezzi doesn't fit that bill. I would rather look to Icardi, Iturbe, Zarate etc, besides giving Higuain another chance.

sounds fair?

Southampton is trying to sign Rojo..Is this a joke are what? I'd rather see Rojo stay at Sporting Lisbon and play UCL football for the coming up season than go to Southampton of all teams..This wont happen, they better forget about Marcos..

@Deb: I too get what you're saying but don't put all your hopes on all these guys breaking it big time on the national scene..I can see Lamela, Iturbe, Mussachio, Icardi and Peruzzi getting into the national team pretty soon but for the others I don't know..The most important thing at this moment is for these players to develop and live up to their expectation and not losing their ways like Brazilian players Ganso, Pato etc.

Did you hear about the rumor about Tottenham wanting to sign River Plate player, Manuel Lanzini?

Deb; a really good write up from you.

it gives us hope to see all those names their, i realise some will make it and some will not and some new names will "put ytheir hands to the selectors" but id rather have kids we have then what the yellow team has or England for that matter.

like you im still guttered/struggling to deal with the loss and its really hard to take not winning the final :(

@Kid: I get your point. But we should remember, 25-26 is a good age to shine. This world cup, our key attackers and midfielders were mostly in that age range. Messi, Di Maria, Aguero, Higuain. Most of these players I mentioned will be around that 25-26 age group by 2018.

I will make the most probable cases (the ones I would expect to make it soon) below. Your thoughts please:

1. Angel Correa - Already 19, would be 23 by 2018. Perfect age for a striker. Already a huge sensation, he is often called the next Aguero, or next Tevez at times. His game is not just a striker, but also to drop into the hole at most opportunities before trying to launch attacks. He will be playing the next few seasons with Atletico Madrid, and that's a fantastic and competitive platform for a hounding striker. Simeone can only make him stronger and a more complete forward.

2. Mauro Icardi - Already a 'character' in football, Icardi will be 25 by 2018. Perhaps a complete striker he is. Both footed, fast, tall, has tremendous aerial control, great finisher. Has already been capped under Sabella. The management definitely will call him up in near future.

3. Erik Lamela - He would be 26 in 2018. And he already plays like he is 26. When Totti is your big fan and you're just 22, you are a real talent. Lamela is outstanding when given space and confidence. Unfortunately missed out this time, but will surely like to make a mark in 2018.

4. Leandro Paredes - As per Bleacher Report, "It is surely only a matter of time before the prodigious Leandro Paredes earns a move to one of Europe's top clubs. The 18-year-old Boca Juniors attacking midfielder is an exceptional passer and is renowned for his imagination and creativity with the ball. It was recently claimed that AC Milan and Juventus top the list of suitors eager to acquire his services." He will be 24 by 2018, not too young not too old.

5. Juan Iturbe - The incredible wonderkid. As per wiki, "The media have dubbed Iturbe as the new Lionel Messi, because of their many comparisons. With Iturbe being an Argentine, quick on the ball, a goal-scorer and his diminutive stature, all of which are Messi's traits." Just joined Roma, will get adequate exposure in Serie A and Champions Leagues. Will be 25 in 2018, perfect age for a skilled pacy attacking midfielder.

6. Ezequiel Cirigliano - "Cirigliano's positional sense and tough mentality make him a natural choice for the defensive midfield role, and his performances for River have led to comparisons with countryman Javier Mascherano." A midfielder compared to both Xavi AND Mascherano, he is a sensation already. Given a good transfer to Europe in near future and that we are 4 years away from the world cup, who knows he might just have an opportunity to showcase his talent in 2018. He will be 26 then.

7. Mateo Musacchio - Already a leader in Villareal and shaping up to be one of the best young CBs in the world, he is rumored to join Liverpool soon. Whatever he is, he is sure to get a call sooner or later. He will be 27 in Russia, and may just do as good as Garay did this time. Or even better.

8. Gino Peruzzi - Rumored to join Arsenal, this is another young defender who will make Argentina proud in coming years. Has already been capped for Argentina, he may just be the perfect substitute for Zabaleta in Russia. "Peruzzi plays predominantly at right back, but can also play right midfield." A tremendous versatile young right back. Fingers crossed. He will be 26 by 2018.

I don't know if all of them will make it to the next world cup, but all of them do deserve a chance. And they are playing in the most competitive of leagues and will only get better with time. For me, this may just be the golden generation of Argentine footballers. And with the veterans like Messi, Di Maria and Mascherano joining in, I am quite excited. What about you? Opinions please.

What about @The Vickerman? Comments please.

The sadness is still there in my heart. I don't know why, but nothing seemed right for me that night. Right from the build up to the final, I felt an extreme loss of interest and passion. Which was so strange!! Even when they were lined up for the national anthem, I didn't feel the excitement. And then, what happened over the next 120 mins was so disappointing. I still can't forget Messi's face that day. He looked like some blotting paper had drawn out all the life from him. He stood lost.

It's 9 days and I am slowly coming back to life. And just as any human will do, I am again dreaming. My next mission is Copa 2015.

Great news for Basanta this.

Just a note to folks (Deb, Kid, and others from the previous blog entry) who were discussing Angel Correa.

According to the reports I read, a tumor was detected in his heart during the medical before him joining Atletico Madrid. The surgery has been performed, and he is expected to be out for 6 months. Here's wishing him a safe and speedy recovery.

(Edit: here's a source - http://www.si.com/planet-futbol/2014/07/17/angel-correa-miss-six-months-heart-surgery)

@Deb:

''1.Angel Correa (striker, 19)
2. Mauro Icardi (striker, 21)
3. Erik Lamela (attacking mid, 22)
4. Leandro Paredes (attacking mid, 20)
5. Juan Iturbe (winger/forward, 21)
6. Alan Ruiz (attacking mid, 20)
7. Ezequiel Cirigliano (midfielder, 22)
8. Mateo Musacchio (defender, 23)
9. Nicolas Tagliafico (defender, 21)
10. Geronimo Rulli (goalkeeper, 22)
11. Gino Peruzzi (defender, 22)
12. Lisandro Lopez (defender, 24)
13. Matias Kranevitter (midfielder, 21)
14. Bruno Zuculini (midfielder, 21)
15. Luciano Acosta (striker, 20)
16. Leonel Galeano (defender, 20)
17. Facundo Ferreyra (striker, 21)
18. Sergio Araujo (striker, 22)''

I don't see all these guys getting into the first team any time soon..They need a platform to excel because we just don't have enough games for all these guys to make the NT..This is where qualifying for the 2016 Olympic in Rio is crucial for us..Argentina will probably use the same U23 Olympic squad for the Copa 2016 tournament..The young players will have the opportunity to show what they can do in two back to back tournaments..Copa 2015 is really serious, we can't afford to experiment with Copa15, Argentina need this cup..All we need is replacements for Demi,Gago,Augusto, Palacio, Campagrano, 2nd and 3rd goalkeepers..No need to radically change the team for Copa 2015..

If we are to retain the same style in 2018 (and we should given how well it worked for us this time), we have a few decent substitutes for the key players of the system:

The 2 strikers ahead of Messi (Higuain, Aguero in 2014):
Correa, Icardi, Acosta, Aguero

Creative midfielders beside Messi (Enzo and Di Maria in 2014):
Lamela, Paredes, Iturbe, Di Maria

Defensive midfielders (Biglia and Mascherano in 2014):
Cirigliano (fantastic talent), Kranevitter, Zuculini, Biglia, Mascherano

Defenders (Zabaleta, Garay, Demichelis, Rojo in 2014):
Peruzzi, Musacchio, Lopez, Tagliafico, Rojo, Garay, Zabaleta

Keeper:
Romero, Rulli

I want him to stay. I would love him to stay. And I really believe there is no mathematics or logic that can define Mascherano. He is the biggest warrior in modern football in my opinion.

The good times need to start with Copa 2015. If we can win that tournament, the team will actually start believing they can win big tournaments. And with that dream unfolded, am sure Mascherano will continue. With flying colors.

Also, if Enrique is to be believed, Mascherano will soon be the captain of Barcelona. That will demand more of him, and he will be busy recharging himself, instead of thinking to retire.

Deb: Klose was 36 at the world cup and he was playing as a striker too. Gerrad was 34 at the world cup and he look in great physical shape..I see no reason why Mascherano can't play at 34 years old at the next world cup..Correct me if I'm wrong, but before the world cup started people here were flirting with the idea of picking a 38 year old Zanetti..Mascherano at 34 as a lot to offer to Argentina if he choose not to retire from international football due to club obligation.

@sabella2015
There is no need to produce Aimar, Verons. I think the game is very different now. There are #10s, but they are very different. The number 10s are more goal scoring ones. Aimar was more of a running forward. He hardly achieved anything consistently. Someone like Veron as a deep lying play maker wont be bad. The veron of later days. We need better #8s than #10s. But good point. I would have loved if we had a James rodriguez.

Argentina defensive depth is so scary at the moment..Even the goalkeeper depth is pretty good right now..We are starting to look like the traditional football country we was 30 years ago..Now we just need to produce some Aimar's,Veron's and Riquelme's in mid field to accompany the rock we already have in Masche, Biglia and Perez..
