The Team Arrives In Brasilia

The Argentina National team departed from Belo Horizonte and have safely arrived at their next destination which in Brasilia.

Shortly after landing, they were escorted by the security team and headed straight to the Hotel Royal Tulip Alvorada where the team will be staying. As always, wherever the team goes, passionate Argentina fans where there to greet them.

On Friday, Alejandro SABELLA will give a press conference in the morning (11.30am local time) at the Estadio Nacional de Brasilia. Surely everyone at present will be eager to know on what other changes in the starting lineup. Hopefully we will get some answers then.

From then the team will have a one hour official practice at the stadium from 12.15 pm which will be open to the media.

Will they really wear away jersey? I think they just do it because showcase the away jersey, because in semis and final we shuld of course wear the light blue and white lol.

I believe we will start 4-3-3 with Basanta and Lavezzi. I don't think Sabella will change formation at this stage. Hope the players will step up their game! Everything can happen in 1 game, so little things can make a difference. Luckily Belgium also played until extra time. Let's pray our team will be strong and happiness will be us again!

For the other matches:
1. France vs Germany: I hope France win, but most likely Germany..
2. Brazil vs Colombia: I think Brazil will win due to home support.
3. Costa Rica vs Netherland: I hope Costa Rica win, but most likely Netherland...will be happy if my prediction turns out to be wrong...lol.

PS: @Tallman, dont be bothered. If some ppl here got the chance to go to the stadium, they would join the Brazilian to whistle at us. Luckily they can only annoy us here. I think no use to reply. I don't need to mention names, you know who they are.

There is no indication other than Basanta and Biglia coming IN. I dont think he will change Federico Fernandez. As he does not rule out 4-3-3 (4-2-3-1), may be there is a chance of Palacio or Maxi coming IN for Lavezzi.

You are so naive man. Mascherano tackles - it is feat.
But Messi leads as man of the match it proves We still depends on one player and it isn't good
Di Maria shots without effect are proves helplessness precisely.

@Cristo Guerillero

Yes, but this is dangerous. If Belgium park the bus, we are in trouble. Even Iran and Switzerland had plenty of good attacks against us and Belgium have WAY BETTER forward line. They can punish us, if we don't score first. Let's hope we will!

I don't know what's this hype about Belgium. They know that Argentina is a beter team, and they will park the bus (Wilmots said it). If not, they will suffer consequences and repercussions.

One bad thing is, that this WC Belgium reminds me a little bit 2010. Germany, very well balanced team.

Tough this time, we don't have a complete idiot in bench, a little bit faster defenders than turtles and confident Messi.

So we will win 2:1 :)

If the reports are to be believed, DiMaria you should have saved yourself the effort in the champs league and left more in the tank for the WC! Every transfer window your name is on the list to be shipped out and that is no way for a club to respect a player of your loyalty. Argentina and Messi needs you more than ever. Higuain and Aguero are too far away to help much. It's up to you now! Recuperate well and keep running and trying.

Guys, I have a feeling that AGUERO and HIGUAIN time is coming. And the players confidences are building up little by little. Trust me, this team is coming with some big surprise in the next games coming up. And I believe that when that time comes, no conspiracy cant hold US from winning this CUP.

Gago has just provided one good ball throughout the whole tournament, against Iran,to Higuain. Moreover Belgium has a physical midfield. We need change here.Either Biglia or Perez can start.

Biglia is a proven player, adds defensive solidity and physical superiority.Biglia and Mascherano can shut down any Belgiun activity through the middle, that's for sure.

Perez is a box to box midfielder. He has good pace and skills. He can provide the necessary drives and push from the midfield we are lacking. But no matter how good he is,giving a player his wc debut at QF is always a gamble.

Should we stick with Higuain?Actually we can not blame him entirely for his sub par display so far.He was not provided with ample of great passes to score. But on the other hand,he is not being a great help in link up play with Messi to break the parked bus.Not matter what Wilmot is saying,he will go for what Swiss did in the round of 16.He has seen Swiss almost kept Messi quiet for 118 minute and he is thinking that I have better players than Hitzfeld so surely I will be able to keep Messi quiet for the entire game.

The thing I'm trying to say is that we are gonna see another Swiss/Iran/Bosnia effort.Messi will be needing help and recalling those matches,I'm not convinced Hiuain will provide them.Messi will need someone who will be always close to him for quick one two, ground exchange and will be able to finish if Messi provides the killer ball.Is Palacio is a option here?Actually we have no option other than Palacio.

Against Belgium we need improve both our attacking and defensive display. We are too predictable at attack.Every attacking player is playing like a lone man,no one two,no off ball movement..Di Maria is trying to do something, everybody is wathcing. This should be changed. And we know they can do better.Swiss had 2 chances due to just lack of focus from players. We can not afford to do so against Belgium. We must be 100% focused and alert.

If we make the above adjustments and be mentally strong and determined,we can win this game. But rember that the win won't be smooth,Belgium will fight and make things difficult for us,that's for sure.

My take, so far on the world cup and performance of Albiceleste.

A rather nervous and too cautious start in the first game.

A hard-fought win against a bus-parking Iran.

Performance with promising signs of improvement against Nigeria.

Messi performing well up to the expectations and carrying the team forward from the group stages to the knockout stages.

Again, a hard-fought win against a stubborn Swiss who defended packed in numbers in the penalty box.

A courageous Argentina with steel determination, with the likes of Di Maria starting to get into the game though still lacking in effectiveness and efficiency.

Overall, a slow but steady improvement as a team.

Every other team in the QF struggled and stumbled except Colombia and Belgium.

In fact Brazil, Netherlands, France and Germany were outplayed by their opponents for the most part of the game. Their opponents didn’t sit back to defend, but dominated the game and just lacked the finishing touches.

Compare this to Argentina who dominated and attacked and created 22 chances (See FIFA stats) against that Swiss defense. And what do they get from the pundits and mainstream media? The lions Share of criticism and negative reviews.

Fortunately, these pundits and Argentina-hating media, they do not matter at all.

What matters and what matters most is that Argentina are very much alive and kicking, improving and growing with each game.

Of course, there are rooms for improvements, but I am really convinced that they are going to do it.

If Argentina do it spectacularly, well and good. If they do it “unconvincingly” let it be.

Twenty eight years is more than long enough, and I really, really want Argentina to win that thing on 13 July.

Vamos vamos, Argentina,….

People keep talking here that Maradona '86 was enough to gives us World Cup. It is not truth. Please dull witted and poorly educated peoples just watch the matches of Argentina in Mexico '86 in full and see how good team it was. Maradona didn't won World Cup alone and Messi will not. "There would be no repeat of that history as they were beaten by Argentina in the semifinals by Diego Maradona's brace in 1986"

"I assure you we won't watch Messi play -- we'll take charge of him collectively.

"When you shut down the space as the Swiss did [in the round of 16], that makes a player's life difficult regardless of how good he is"

These are the words of Belgium coach Marc Wilmots.

And i want to remember him one fan's comment.

"
World Cup 2014

They all try to stop him

1. Bosnia tried ... they failed

2. Iran tried ... they failed

3. Nigeria tried ... they failed

4. Switzerland tried ... they failed

5. Belgium will try … they will fail

6. Cristiano Ronaldo tried ... he failed BIG TIME

Who ?

Answer: Lionel Andres Messi aka THE WORLDS BEST PLAYER of this generation "

He will understand it after the match. No team can stop Messi in this WC because God want Argentina to win this WC.

Stat Check: Copied from goal.com

Since the start of the 2010 World Cup, Argentina have won eight of their nine games in the competition, their only defeat coming in the quarter finals of the 2010 edition against Germany (0-4).

Argentina haven’t won any of their last four World Cup quarter finals outright, going through on penalties against Yugoslavia in 1990 and being eliminated in 1998 (1-2 v Netherlands), 2006 (on penalties v Germany) and 2010 (0-4 v Germany).

Argentina have been victorious (via penalties or winning AET) in six of their seven World Cup games that have gone to extra-time.

All four of Argentina and Belgium’s wins have been by a one goal difference.

Belgium’s six goals in this World Cup have all been scored from the 70th minute onwards. Also, four of their six goals have been scored by substitutes.

Belgium have only been ahead for 52 minutes in their four World Cup games so far in 2014, less than any of the seven other teams in the quarter finals.

Belgium and Argentina have had the most shots in this World Cup (83 and 80 respectively). Marc Wilmots’ men have also had the most attempts on target (32).
Argentina have averaged 64.3% of possession in this World Cup, the highest ratio of the tournament.

Messi is the player who has completed the most dribbles at this World Cup (24) and created the most chances for his teammates (18).

In the last 16 game against Switzerland, Angel Di Maria attempted 12 shots, the most ever in a World Cup match by an Argentinean player (1966-2014). He also scored the only goal of the game.

Javier Mascherano has won more tackles than any other player at this World Cup (18 out of 22 attempted).

Kevin De Bruyne delivered the final ball for a Belgian shot 10 times against the USA, more than any other player in a game at this World Cup. He was also involved in both Belgian goals, scoring the first and assisting the second.

@San Isidro - If you mean me When you write "so called fans" look on your own words:

"This will be another difficult match. (...)
I have serious reservations about this game. The oddsmakers have us favored to win this game. But our performance by Gago, Higuain and Aguero are awful. I don't really care if they are injured; if they made the 23 man squad they need to perform or admit they are injured so that the team can have different alternatives. It is pure selfishness to pretend you can play and lay that pile of turd Higuain and Aguero have laid. I hope it doesn't cost us, or that they wake up. At full strength, I would say we would destroy Belgium, but not is version thof Argentina.
Can any of you guys put my mind at ease as to why we will win????"

These are the same ideas as mine:
- defeatism of mood or just realism
- critic a few players our team (also your critic of Zabaleta in other place)
- at last: critic the whole team ("...but not this version of Argentina...").

It is really the same as in my critic. I am not criticising the whole team also. I am criticising Fernandez, Gago Higuain and, in some regard, Di Maria and Messi. But I believe that We can win with the new players (Palacio,Perez/Biglia,Basanta,Lavezzi,maybe Aguero)next game, at least. I have always thought Palacio,Perez and Basanta should play. Therefore is my critic Higuain,Gago,Fernandez when they plays so bad since Bosnia.

So, San Isidro, We are both "so called fans" or just realist.

Guys, no matter how many times we shout sabella has no guts. He's totally collapse by Messi's influence on the team.

I think putting Fernandez on the world cup squad was a bad decision. He's never gonna improve cause he is a super mediocre player. He may be top choice player for papua new guinea/ New Zealand but certainly not for Argentina.

Starting Gago instead of Biglia/Perez is always major bad decision. Gago is not a visionary player and nor he has any commanding attitude. He's totally a waste for our game plan.

Players needs to understand that we can win this world cup without having leo Messi. If you don't believe in your ability then you not gonna able to make it happen.

Without Messi Argentine Team formation : 4-1-3-2

----------------------- Romero ----------------------

Zabaleta ------- Campganaro ------- Garay ------- Rojo

---------------------- Mascherano --------------------

Ricky Alvarez ----------- Biglia ----------- Di Maria

--------------- Aguero -------- Palacio --------------

Both Aguero and Higuain should not start for any game. Rather Aguero should be substitute by Higuain and Levezzi should be substitute by Palacio.

I think above team certainly have full capacity to win this world without having Leo Messi. psychologically players has to be motivated and confident.

I can't predict anything against Belgium cause it will really tough game. It's 50-50 challenge, just hope for the best.

Kid the reason fernandez is having poor games is due to playing the right side of the defense, before he used to play on the left side and did well, but sabella changed his position and that is may be the reason of his struggles , still he is better then Demi in the air and is more athletic , we will see but I would choose fernandez

Can't find a place for Ronaldinho and Romario.

Ronaldinho is a play-maker and so was Zico,
I thought Zico was better than Ronaldinho.

and my formation allow only on striker, so ronaldo was definitely better than romario.

Emotions have been running wild the last few days for sure out here! I am really thankful for the numerous comments made by so many good posters (positive, realistic and negative) . Of course everyone can't possibly have the same opinions on everything, and that's what such blogs are for - to share viewpoints. Just 1 request, why not keep it civil and leave out the unnecessary name-calling?

Look, I doubt anyone (including players and manager) has been happy with the manner in which we have progressed, not entirely looking too convincing. Nobody is really happy about it, but it is what it is. Positives are we are in the QF stage with some below-potential performance. We have the ability to break out , and Messi is delivering. With some more support, we can really tune things right. There's a lot of scope for improvement, and right now, yes, the onus is on Sabella to make sure they do improve and be more cohesive.

Here's my sense of things here:

1. The stand-out players so far without doubt for us have been Messi, Rojo, Mascherano. Romero has been quite decent (shaky at times, but so far , no major effs ups and he has made a few good saves as well). Mascherano has been fiery and passionate, a real lift and a warrior. Rojo has really come to the fore and made many of us eat out words and earn everyone's respect with his athleticism, stamina and general play. Messi has been calm and deadly and really carrying the bulk of responsibility going forward.

2. It's tough to get a read on our games. 3 of the 4 opponents have set up very defensively against us, making it tough to penetrate them. But breaking it down:

Negatives: We are hurting ourselves more without the lack of creativity or imagination outside of Messi, and the general slow-pace that we have been playing at. Why not try to do something different, eg. massively increase the pace of the game even for 10 minute bursts and change things up? This is where player chemistry comes in and everyone plays at a higher pace.

Positives: To our credit, we have found some ways to win. There is an element of luck involved with such late goals, but maybe that's a divine sign too! :) Also, with such high possession and us playing deep in the opponents half, of course the opposition will get chances to counter and we will look vulnerable. This is not unusual. We can't be expect any opposition to have ZERO chances.

3. We need the other players to really step up NOW. The first rung of players here are Higuain, Zabby, and Gago. These 3 guys are essential and effective support systems who are capable of so much more. Higuain has found it hard this world cup with the lack of space and some poor touch. Zabby is experienced and much more capable. He needs to step up as a leader of the defense and hold it together. Gago has been disappointing. Perhaps he has been instructed to keep it very cautious with his passing, but at needs to hustle in defense , which he hasn't done yet.

3. Lavezzi and Palacio - these 2 guys should see opportunity that's staring them on the face and prepare to snatch it. Lavezzi seems almost content playing as a super-sub. He was effective off the bench against Nigeria, but when given the chance as a starter against the Swiss, he was really not doing enough. You have a GOLDEN CHANCE to be a starter the rest of the way for the world cup for your nation. Where's the hunger?

4. Midfield : Gago has been under a bit of pressure, quite underwhelming. Gago and Di Maria need to take the responsibility to DICTATE the pace of the game, especially against defensive teams. Quick transition passes, switching the ball across flanks faster, 1-2s etc when we need to increase the pace, and be calm and find ways to retain possession when we need to slow things down. Gago does only the 2nd part. Di Maria has been too careless with the ball . These 2 need to work together real quick. I'll be curious to see if Gago sits out - who replaces him and IF they are able to perform any better in the same role- mainly dictate the pace of the game.

5. Defense: Rojo is a big loss, fancy saying that! He had the speed to back track, provided width and some good crosses. We will be forced to bring in Basanta who is effective defensively, but may not foray forward as much as Rojo. Because Basanta is in, Lavezzi may be required to strictly work the flanks and give that width. Can he be disciplined enough? Would Sabella move to a 4-4-2 and get a guy like Ricky in? Talks of Demi in for FF will have repercussions. Demi has more experience but less pace, and also less chemistry in the unit. We already need to bring in Basanta. Will sabella risk putting 2 out of 4 new defenders at the back against Hazard and Co? If he does, then I hope he solidifies the midfield with a 4-4-2 option.

Keep the faith folks!

actually if demi come then it is a good move he is in good frm lately and also has experience playing against most of the belgians and ff is playing shit he is too slow very sloppy zero cnfidence and a bad passer atleast demi is a strong tackler and pass the ball from defence quickly rather taking ages to decide whom to pass i feel gago and fernandez r the sole reason we look sluggish we cant break strong defence playing so slow

Honestly i dont want drastic changes in the line up , i wish biglia in place of gago. even i want pipita to start But i wish palacio in place of lavezzi.

But i certainly want our defense need to act more organised , i will say masch has to take that ownership and yell to the players whenever needed.

Guled: I too would rather FF but I thought just came to me about the idea of Sabella playing Demichelis because he's use to playing against guys like Hazard and those other dudes from Totenham..It might actually be a good move after all..The weather is really hot in Brazil, this game is not being played in West London, I believe Demi will be able to keep up with the Belgian players if he's selected..

I would still play fernandez, I believe Demi is worse and I would never trust him, biglia will be upgrade over gago defensively but we need more then that enzo Perez offers that we will see what sabella does

No matter what their coach says belguim can't park the bus , they don't have the players to do it, so they must play their game wich is attacking and that will suite us better

Finally sabella realising that gago is not good and thinking of replacing him with bigila,he will provide much needed support to mascherano.
In second half sabella should bring Alvarez for lavezzi, gago for bigila and Aguero/Palacio for higuain

Vamos Argentina

In my personal opinion we would only win this world cup if Sabella willing to make changes to his preferred first team and the entire team improve with their performance. In addition I know this may not be the correct time to say this but whatever happens in this world cup I think Sabella time is over and Argentina should not make Spain hire simeone as coach before they do....Good luck Argentina your support is solid in this tiny Caribbean Island of GRENADA...

i am sure Belgium is not gonna open up. stay behind the ball to stop a player like Messi is the only way. as our defenders a bit slow to react, its pretty normal coaches of other team will depend on counter attack.

sam kelly told me in twitter that there is 3 changes possible fr belgium game biglia for gago, demichelis for fernandez and basanta for rojo and lavezzi may play as a winger in 4-4-2 frmation now if its true thn we will be very solid and omitting gago is a brilliant move from sabella i personally prefer perez to play bt still happy and im a firm believer that if argentina can break the querterfinal jinx then we will be champions fr sure and im delighted nt to face germany in quarters again we hv a mental block against them

We won't know much until the squads are announced tomorrow. Hope we see some adjustments in players, tactics, and desire.

Hold the ball and stay behind the ball are two different things. And a coach never gives away his game plan before the game itself.

Belgium coach said they will hold the position, stay behind the ball and then counter attack if they get the chance. so they are gonna park the bus too. nothing new.
we hav to be careful.

I just check the stadium capacity, it holds 69,349..So my guess is close to 50,000 Argentina fans will be at the game? We need the fans, they've been so good for the team, the fans have been our 12th man in Brazil.

Do you guys have any idea of how many Argentina fans will be at the game on Saturday? I don't know why FIFA had to allocate all these tickets to the Brazil especially for Argentina games when our own fans could have get those seats in the stadiums..Brazilian have no business at Argentina games, most of them are just at Argentina games to boo the players.

I too thought portugal would be our opponents at this stage and they would be tough to break becouse they sit back and counter , how things have changed, I am not worried about belguim becouse they play attacking football and don't have the individuals to park the bus, they are still good team and we have to be careful but we can beat them no doubt

My first reaction to the draw back in December was that this will be the crucial moment in our campaign. I thought we will be playing Portugal at this point and we will either go home or emerge strongly out of this to win the whole thing.

It turned out, it is Belgium, but I still feel the same, we are either going home or emerge as the team that is destined to win the World Cup.

I believe we can do it.

Vamos Argentina!
