Kun Agüero Is Back?

Kun AGÜERO who has been injured since the match against Nigeria is now back in training. He's recovery has been progressing well and during the evening practice he did some light training with the ball for about 15 minutes.

He could be returning to train with the first team soon and maybe, just maybe could be on the bench for this weekend's quarter final match up against Belgium.

Fingers crossed.

I like this line up

Romero
Zaba-Garay-Demichelis-Basanta
Biglia-Mascherano
Alvarez-Messi-Di Maria
Palacio

Alvarez, Messi and Di Maria are all free to interchange. Messi needs someone to play quick passing and quick one-two. Di Maria and Alvarez will be able to provide that hopefully

If We will play good at last it will be with this line up I believe:

Romero
Campagnaro,Basanta,Garay,Rojo
Perez/Biglia, Masche, Di Maria
Lavezzi,Messi,Palacio

So, against Belgium We have a fat chance...

Please dont say we are here only bcoz of luck.... We didnt get any non existing penalty or freekick to score or any other eztreme favourable decisions to reach here... What we mean luck is we didnt play even to our 50% potential n still is at QF... Thatz all... We controlled our game better than many other fellow teams n ofcourse we are nowhere near perfect, made so many mistakes, bad decisions in de way through, bt it doesnot mean we can improve from here n win de WC... Every team is here unconvincingly.... If sab can get de right balanced 11 we will b de champions... We dont need tevez or willy or gaitan or pastore if we can use bigla, perez, ricky, palacio, lavezzi, augusto properly....

It will be great if we could see some changes in the squad although little bit miracle if Sabella can take such decision.

No doubt Basanta will be the first choice of replacement for Rojo but another possibility is moving Zabaleta to left back and played Campagnaro in at right back.

Or it also can be Demichelis for Frederico and Biglia for Gago. This will brings more moblity in midfield as well.

All people who are worried about us not playing well - we should be proud that, we are the most feared team in this WC. We played a parked bus against all our opponents, except Nigeria. And we still came through without the help of a penalty.
Now lets see if Belgium also park the bus. If they dont, I think it will be a high scoring game in which we will score more. If not, we will still come through, hopefully.

I feel, history is being repeated. We will defeat Belgium, may be not in a 'not breathless' manner like in 86, but in a tight affair, and will defeat Germany in the finals to complete the repetition of history.
We may not be playing at our best. Even DeMaria is nowhere near his club form. But in some ways, our defence is holding up. The way we all stood together in ET against the Swiss, gives me hope that the players are determined.

When you are in the tournament and have selected the players, the question is not who's better than who; it's more on tactical approach and the freshness of the players.

Gago is no doubt more important than Biglia but so far he did not perform well; he was to be the water carrier and his vision to counter and build the surprise attack are much needed. Higuain is too slow because of his overweight body, Di Maria are on the vital part, so we must keep our faith that he can be regain his Madrid on fire form. Wake Up. Time to improved our playing style from slow to more dynamic; bring back the glory of Tango characteristic stylish with the bottom line winning is important. Together they can. Vamos Arg.

I have been following Argentina Since 2005,because the beauty of football was with them. But honestly, this world cup Argentina playing without any beauty....:-)

I think if we use the below squad to face Belgium, we can win the match at least 2-0

My squad....

Romero
Zabaleta - Demi - Garay - Basanta
Bigila - Macherano - Alveras/Enzo
Dimaria - Messi - Aguero

Gago is too slow and walking with the ball, i hate that and there is no urgency for the team becoz of him.. Higuin is out form and FF is too shaky,

Demi had great season with Man city and with that exp he can be good at back line to mark Lukaku

Vamos Argentina...
My BP is increasing when i watch the match...:-):-)

@travis I don't care what you call the move. Either sudden attack or counter attack is fine by me. I called it counter attack because the way I see it the Swiss were preparing for an attack and their players were in attacking mode, as you can see how they lined up in that moment. But they failed to launch the attack because their fullback was caught in possession.

However, what I want to emphasize is about the element of surprise which came from that move. We need that element of surprise and it can only happen if we can recover the ball in the opposition half or further up the field. With Gago we lose the ability to recover the ball faster in the opposition half because he will always jog along with the opposition to our penalty box.

@Mikail yeah, i agree, the swiss were so exposed at that time. it took only one mistake tho. but still, not from a counter attack, it is more precisely to say that argentina create a sudden attack from that mistake and it took the swiss by surprise, and that it's too late for them at that time to regroup to stop messi by collective works, as they did before that. that goal came from the swiss horror mistake.

@travis The swiss lost the ball when they were pushing upfield. All their defenders and midfielders were positioned around the centre circle. That was why they had to retreat to regroup when the lost the ball and enabled Messi to run straight at them.

Many times during the match when Messi didn't get the chance to run straight at the defense because they were all standing off waiting for Messi to come. As a result, Messi was easily contained and surrounded.

@baker, Messi should adjust to 4-4-2 for the sake of Argentina and I believe Messi can do anything for Argentina, just look at the last match, one thing I had noticed that Messi was defeding a lot and according to Whoscored.com he had six tackles won in that match, I must say our defence played with class against Switzerland, although Sabella is now in an ocean of criticism he must be giveb credit for this.

@Mikail about maria goal against the swiss. that goal happened not from a counter attack, the swiss don't attack at that moment. how can you say it is from argentina counter attack??? palacio intercept the ball from the swiss, pass to messi, and thus attacks!!! it's funny, what attacks the swiss have form for argentina to counter attack at that very moment???? they just lost the ball, making a great mistakes and argentina just took an advantage out of it.

It's good to know that Kun is back training. We need him more than ever. Not as a wide forward though but as a central striker. People are too quick to dismiss Kun in this WC because of a couple of poor performance in early matches. But remember in the first half against Bosnia the whole team were bad attacking-wise even Messi was not getting much of the ball. Then in the subsequent matches Kun was played in a wide position, which is not his forte, and it didn't help when the opponents were defending deep. Play Kun as a central striker and I can guarantee that we'll see a more dynamic attacking play from Argentina. For now, Kun perhaps is not ready to start a game but he is good enough to be a super sub.

As for Gago, Sabella just need to drop him from the starting XI. We need someone who can recover the possession higher up the pitch to start the counter attack. Just look at how devastating our counter attack when Palacio was able to dispossess Lichsteiner higher up the pitch. It caught the opponents by surprise and Messi could run at the opponents while they were retreating. With Gago we lost the element of surprise in our counter because most of the balls recovered in our own half by the defenders or Mascherano. Without the element of surprise our counter attacks were toothless especially against "park the bus" teams.

@hollywood, good lineup Ricky is very good but I would still use Perez with masch behind Ricky , I am sure sabella would like a lineup like that that solidify the midfield , but the issue is messi will never except to play on the right wing(he started as right winger for Barcelona) I hope our captain understands what we are about to achieve and helps the team

@Pino @guled,

Best way to approach the game is slide Messi to the right of the offense, Di Maria to the left and play a 3 man midfield of Masche, Biglia and Alvarez.

This way they cant pressure Messi defensively and they must pay attention to Alvarez who can pass and start a counter attack with his runs from the middle. Also, hes more of a passing threat than Biglia and Enzo but Enzo can also bring something else to the team which is aggression and midfield overlaps that will put defenders on their heels

Your right, I forgot to mentioned that we don't have a natural 10. Biglia play's as a natural 8 (also Perez), the closes thing to an 10. But we don't necessarily need a 10 to beat the park the bus, we need a better visionary type player, who can manage open spots and rotate the ball accordantly to open gaps. Like Biglia and Perez, I just hope Sabella play's Biglia more, if Gago is struggling against Belgium.

Gago is playing becouse of messi, unfortunetly our captain bought into the theory that only gago can reach the ball to him, it is ridiculous (enzo Perez is capable more then that) i believe that is the reason, this is where sabella should act and convince his captain otherwise by reviewing the matches so far and how gago played

biglia is better than gago??? seriously??? how many times people see biglia play for argentina before??? and when he does, what has biglia do to create chances or making through pass to messi or make one-two with messi and score goals??? do you guys see biglia at copa??? he played in extra time against swiss who're already exhausted and you guys says he did so well better than gago??? actually even banega is way better than biglia. biglia done nothing when he got chances to play for argentina. like i said previously, our subs is horrible; biglia, alvarez, augusto, i mean seriously, none of this guys are better than gago, and perez never play once for argentina in the qualifiers. if there's a player who is slightly better than gago, he is banega. and do you see him in the bench??? sabella is at fault, he don't pick the right players for gago if he's not perform. he has so many of that chances, and what he do??? i remember he call icardi once, but never play him, that's broke my heart. now what options we have for the forward?? kun is not well and pipita is out of form. palacio and lavezzi is not starters, they will fade after 30 minutes in the 1st half. while at the back, we've yet seen the worst of fede, and that will come soon. i said this, play campa with zaba, garay and basanta, this will make the back more stronger and tough to beat. fede just make garay looks so bad. campa has to take fede position and he will do well there. everybody tends to hate gago after the nigeria and the swiss matches. weren't you the same people who embrace him after the bosnia game??? sick people in mundo's. hate them all.

@hollywood hayat, we don,t have that aggressive defense with gago, also pushing the ball quickly for the forwards to counter and reach the opponent box before they regroup is very important, gago is fine player but he is very slow and defensively he struggles, biglia is good and better then gago defensively but we need more then that , enzo Perez offers the best of all our midfielders except may be masch, so we will see if sabella finally unleashes Perez

belgium come very quietly in this world cup. they don't make so much headlines. indeed, the darkwhores in brazil this time around. but that will end pretty soon. argentina will end them in the quarter. belgium have not enough strength to pull out against argentina star-studded players, and now that if kun is back, this will give a greater tonnes of pressure to belgium defense and goalie. questions is, are they really good to beat argentina??? will they defense with 10 men just like iran and the swiss did, who still can't stop argentina from creating chances and a winning goal. this fact, "10 men defense" will not stop argentina. 2 teams have done it, they failed, more miserably, at the very last minutes, and that's hurt a million times then to concede 3 goals at normal 90 minutes. i don't see argentina lost to belgium. what reasons to say that argentina will not go further than quarter?
this i promise to mundo's; if argentina lost to belgium and exit in the quarter, then i will not be here anymore in mundo albiceleste.

I watched the game for a second time, trying to see and analyze what was going on.

The problem is Gago!

Biglia controlled the midfield a lot better with fluidity. The team was playing a much more cohesively game as a unit on offense. They had a better flow of the 10 defender defense that the Swiss put up.

Having teams that park the bus, we need a steady creator playmaker, someone who manages getting the ball around as the flow of the game (open spots). DiMaria had a lot more opportunities towards the end because of the awareness Biglia had with short amount of minutes played with the team. Biglia brings the ball more closer to the Swiss, and we play on their box. With Gago, we played a lot futher, more like at the half of the soccer field. Biglia is a lot better than Gago towards the box, and around the box. Gago, if he can't pass the ball to Messi, who is surrounded, Gago will not be effective, because he is so one time dimensional. Biglia is a lot more dynamic.

I hope Sabella noticed this.

Thoughts of a Belgium supporter(my Friend);
Messi is coming to us.He's on a mission. How to nullify his threat. If we make a single mistake that's a goal. Then will have to attack leaving space for Messi.Hazard can be like Messi but never a Messi .Vermalen can't hold Messi, infact the whole team can't contain Messi. Then what if Aguero return with a bang???Will the real angel stand up???God help us.

**I do not expect a complete overhaul from Sabella.
**Federico won't be replaced.
**The maximum number of changes (other than Basanta) will be two.Kun and Higuain won't start together, they will share the time.I would go with Kun though, because against Kimpany and company height is never gonna add any advantage to Higuain(Though still I believe our CB will score from a setpiece).
**But like ours, there defense is slow, but they are massively overhyped unlike us. Alderwield is not a regular starter for his club,Vertonghan is a out of position player,Vermaelan was never great as you guys think and yeah Kompany.
**Kompany is a passionate one.But do you think he's enough to barrier Messi???And close to the last season our own Demichelis saved his ass a lot. I have been watching him from the days he was bought as a CDM.So no, it's not underestimating.
**The essential thing is(was and will be) to take out maximum players from Messi. What I think is Kun can make a psychological impact on Kompany.Since he is well aware of Kun's talent he would demand to tightly mark Kun.It will make concentration lapses on Messi marking.Imagine messi between an out of order dm and one lonely cb.It's their time to be worried.
**Lavezzi will start again.Vertonghen is a skillful player.(Pablo.d) may have more details. But he lacks pace for a lb.So Lavezzi can trouble him with his pace and trickery.eventhogh Vertonghen is a good athlete I think he lack stamina, fitness and he is over confident with balls on his feet.
**Belgium have not played against a superior attacking minded team in the near past.Add the anxiety of a noobie, that too in a stage like worldcup is gonna drain you faster.
**Expect another Shaqiri(that man nearly gave me nightmare) in Hazard. But the difference is Hazard is a little bit easier to mark than Shaqiri. Also if Lavezzi succeed in attacking Vertonghen continuously,it will reduce his impact on attacking.
**Mertens also needs same treatment with DiMaria doing Lavezzi's work. Also Basanta is never that fast. But if they point out him then they ate gonna disappointed.Basanta is a lion hearted and faced man.

Kun can be the super sub, we need him; otherwise 4-4-2 will be a suit choice as to fill the gap between the mid and attack, Biglia and Pallacio could be in the starting XI.

So if we go to penalties, who would you pick as our 4 penalty takers besides Messi?

In the 2nd extra time period, would you consider giving Aguero a few minutes just to have him participate? I have heard (can't confirm) that Orion is a terrific penalty goalie (better than Romero anyway). If you had an extra substitution, would you bring in Orion just before the penalties as a specialist along with Aguero?

Without any scientific knowledge, and taking into account skill + mental strength, I think this would be my ideal penally line up given our current roster:

Goalie: Orion (I know Sabella would never ever do this as a substitution)

1st penalty taker: Messi (I would start with the captain to set the right tone

2rd: Aguero (as a late sub)

3rd: Higuain (converted in Copa 2011 vs Uruguay)

4th: Maxi (experience counts, he's been on the biggest stage before)

5th: Mascherano (mentally toughest player we have)

Speaking of Aguero, I was thinking about his availability for a possible penalty shootout. This current squad reminds me a lot of the 90 team that went all the way to the final by scoring a total of 2 goals in FOUR knockout matches and winning 2 penalty shootouts. Think about that for a minute. That team was the definition of 'winning ugly' and the soccer Gods kept smiling on them…especially in the matches against Brazil and Italy on the way to the finals.

With those similarities in mind, it's hard to believe this current team would ever make it to the finals without at least one Penalty shootout. Brazil has been in one already.

After the Iranian game especially, everyone wants to defend Argentina with 10 defenders and counter us. That's the blueprint on how to contain and beat Argentina. That's because they know if they give us space, we will score. Switzerland played a great defensive game against us, these teams are scared to go toe to toe. The moment Switzerland gave us an open space opportunity, we scored.

I think Belgium are going to do the same. They say (Belgium), are going to play an open game against us, let's see what happens.

Sabella is probably going to stick with the same formation. I would like to see Biglia in the second half if Gago is not up to the wall like defense like Switzerland (10 defenders).

Argentina are playing really good soccer as the tournament progresses, but these teams are not trying to play soccer with us, they are clearly parking the bus on us. Sabella is doing a good job, he has made all the right subs, he is reading the game well. I just want Sabella to trust Perez and especially Biglia with more playing time.

Gago needs to play a lot faster with this team, but that's not his A game. Gago has one pace, Biglia has different gears in his arsenal, and his a better playmaker than Gago, and better defender and faster with pace.

Everyone managed to get by, all teams had a tough time winning, great WC so far.

Vamos Argentina!

He should be rested. If he feels fit enough he can come in dying minutes.

It depends on Sabella actually, if he is fit enough to play in such a high level game, Sabella can start him.

At this point we are too far down the road to risk starting this guy. His role now is super sub coming in on the 80th minute to win a game during the final minutes or to score in extra time.
