News From Cidade do Galo

Alejandro SABELLA and the rest of the team continued their usual practice in the morning at their base camp. As far as the starting line up is concern, Ezequiel LAVEZZI looks to be the strong candidate to replace the injured Kun AGÜERO for the Round of 16 clash against Switzerland.

The team is expected to depart to Sao Paolo at about 7.30 PM local time and will stay at the Pullman Ibirapuera Hotel.

SABELLA is expected to hold a press conference in the morning at about 11.30 am where the team will also held a practice session at the Arena Corinthians.

@el Papita
Pastore has mostly been out of form for the entire season at PSG. He came along at the end but he was a ghost of the player he was in Italy. Additionally, he plays the traditional enganche position which this team really does not use. I would rather have every midfielder we have over Pastore considering his current form. It was a very good omission in my opinion.

Hopefully Sabella realises that Argentina needs a 2 goal cushion before reverting to defense.

Too many last minute goals.
Extra time is something we do not need given the short space between matches.

Claims that the Dutch should not have a penalty in the 94th minute, are correct.

However, they should have had a penalty at the end of the first half when Robben was tackled by two Mexican players and each tackle was a penalty in itself.

The mood in the Dutch camp is way different than during other world cups. There is an incredible team spirit and belief they can do it. Van Gaal already used 20 players of his squad and knows how to substitute as almost all substitutes have scored goals.

Personally I think Dutch defense is too weak to win it.

It looks like *Goals at the last minute* is getting a tradition at this WC 2014. Argentina team, please beaware of that and do not play only defensive after give a goal. Play attacking and the defensive at the same time. Squeeze up the opponents, keep faith and trust on you, play as a team, pass the ball when you think you cannot score, do not waste a single ball, don't be over excited then nobody can stop you. You will WIN on every game and get the World Cup 2014.

Mexico got screwed today by a f**cking referee. What kind of moron calls a penalty in the 93rd minute on a dive? One of those Mexican players should have buried his cleats in that cheating turd Robbens knee and given him a real reason to go down. Netherlands classless piece of turds come meet your makers because you won't get those horseshit calls against a bigger team.

Costa Rica which depends heavily on team chemistry... it is the most important ingredient to WC success-- CHEMISTRY... with that,, they THRASHED champion teams like Uruguay and Italy without having any star players... they will pose huge problems for the Dutch in the quarters...

In the midst of the tornado that is this WC,, there is only ONE CERTAINITY-- if messi SCORES then Argentina wins... I just hope he continues to score in every match...

I am that eastern-European guy, who always do Argentina as underdogs against European teams?

Well, now it's really clear, that you are not just a person who lives in illusions, but you are just stupid. I has always said, that Germany are top team, who normally reach far and everyone needs to afraid them. And all the other top teams can be in their good day also a threat, but thats all.

We cant compare our 4-3-3 to some others only in de basis of formation... For example a 4-3-3 of biglia-masche-enzo mid has a huge difference from a 4-3-3 of di maria-masche-gago... I mean 4-3-3 using by other teams may have 3 players in mid who could contribute dfnsvly equally well, or may be also 1 or 2 or all their front 3 doing that... Our present starting xi has only 6.5 players atleast involving dfnsv duties... I m really worried if we r sticking with this formation for de remaining games... Our past experiences itself says that talent on pitch alone cant bring victories, team combination, tactics n all shud get right...

backline of rojo garay fernandez zabaleta
midfield of mascherano & gaga(i want biglia) 2 enforcers. masch needs help. gaga soooo slow !
our 2 fastest guys dimaria on left wing backed up by rojo and lavezzi on right wing backed up by zab.
then messi playing a free role with higuain up top...

No... It was a dive, it was only a 20-30% penalty... I was just watching a detail analysis on that in tv show... Defender placed his boot close to robben's, it was not at all stamping anyway, their tip of boots had contact at that point of time, then robben took his foot n hit de dfndr boot himself n went down spectacularly... Robbie fowler(england), michael silvester(france), sunil chetri(india) was criticising him for his attitude...

One thing Kid. I don't know if you have noticed that. IF we qualify for the semis, just look at our playing schedule. I am giving Brazilian time here.

2nd Round - 1st July, 1 PM
Quarter Final - 5th July, 1 PM
Semi Final - 9th July, 5 PM

This is hard. We need to have our reserves fit and kicking. Obviously the same set of 11 men can't play 3 matches in 8 days.

The key against Switzerland and Belgium would be to score early goals and play a solid game without tiring the likes of Messi, Di Maria and Higuain too much. The last thing we need is a 'we have to score in last 15 mins' scenario.

Players like Biglia, Basanta, Palacio, Ricky have to be made ready for anytime substitution. Those 270 minutes of football have to be shared well.

If Costa Rica can impressively dispatch of Greece then I see them going toe to toe with the Dutch and maybe pulling off another win..Thus far Costa Rica have played 3 Bigger football nation than them and they haven't lost, so its not impossible for them to beat Holland..

Costa Rica also dominate Mexico during the qualifiers, so this is no joke team..

To stop Robben, you need your left back and defensive midfielder to give their 100%. One person needs to check his forward sprint along the wing, and when he tries to cut in, the other person needs to close him down. It's actually worth deploying 2 players for a single person. Because the Dutch without Robben is not the same danger at all. Real Madrid stopped him, it's not impossible.

Just don't allow him to invite a foul. Keep distance but don't give him that extra 10 yards to sprint. Let him cut in, that eliminates 50% of his venom.

Rojo and Mascherano can do this very well. They have the abilities. Just cut his options, force him to cut in and take the middle corridor. He isn't the same player anymore.

Argentina, England and Italy

Another category supporting:

Argentina and Brazil

Recently supporters here of: Colombia

You have this guy here from Eastern Europe which put Argentina as underdogs against all European team..

Wow, what a game by Mexico today, but at the end, it was all about adjustments and tactics.

Mexico controlled the 1st half and parts of the second, until Van Gal changed his formation from a 5-3-2, to a 4-4-2 and started to control the midfield play. Coach Herrera was out coach today, or made some key mistakes, by taking out DiSanto and bringing in a right wing player, he should've kept Gio and took out a defender and changed his formation from a 5-3-2, and match Holland's midfield play with 4 midfielder's because he was clearly losing the midfield battle after Van Gal adjusted his tactics to a 4-4-2. Herrera stayed with his bread and butter 5-3-2, but if you losing the midfield play, who clearly have change you formation and sacrifice a defender for a midfielder, and not one of your best versatile players for just a right winger, and that's what happen, and the Dutch took full advantage with wave after wave in attacks (Argentina vs Germany 2006).

It's our turn now to beat the Swiss, one game at a time.

Vamos Argentina!

Comparison between Bale and Robben is useless... Today,, in this temperature,, Bale would've melted like a candle... Robben is the only player in Europe who is mentally very very strong... No heat can bring his speed down... his teammates were tired as hell today,, he ran circles around the mexican defense... To stop him,, we are going need a special plan... Single Man-marking would be the most foolish idea,, robben would blitz past not one but two in the blink of an eye... He HAS to be nullified collectively by our defense otherwise we are in serious trouble...

Robben is a mind-boggling player... Even in this searing heat,, he continues to run like a cheetah... He is carrying the Dutch on his shoulders alone,, the others were very tired and gloomy today only robben was running at his usual speed... Argentina HAVE to keep him at bay...

If Argentina played Holland then all Sabella needs to do is start a pacey winger to neutralize Robben speed on the wing, so that would be either Lavezzi or Palacio to help out..If you notice the Barcelona vs Real games, Jordi Alba neutralize Bale speed on the wing because he (Alba) is just as quick as Bale making Bale less effective..

ahh,, Mexico was NEARLY there... this is what happens when you park the bus after leading the scoreline... they should've attacked Holland but instead they gave the ball to them and was ultimately punished...

this Dutch team can be beaten with ease and Argentina can do that IF they can keep Robben quiet... that will be most difficult task and sabella must sure come up with a plan to stop him if we do meet them in semis... the record of Argentina in semis is impeccable... 4 times we have reached semis and we won everytime and went on to the final... We won 2 final and also lost 2,, but won every semifinal match in 1930,1978,1986,1990... i hope the record is intact this time...

The Dutch are overrated other than their first game which they won in the last 20 minutes with Casillas gifting them 2 goals. they barely beat Australia, Barely beat Chile last 10 minutes with lucky height advantage and lucky counter since chile pushed through to score, Now Mexico who out played them and got lucky

The Dutch team is well prepared after facing the likes of Spain, Chile and Mexico.

guled: no, you got it wrong, the team will play with more energy in the second round..The team was holding back during the group stage, that's why you saw Di Maria gave us a glimpse vs Nigeria of whats to come in the second round..You guys wanted too much too soon, don't kid yourself, why should Argentina play against Bosnia, Iran and Nigeria as if it was a semifinal or final game..The team pace themselves well, our team is really fresh because we did not kill ourselves in the group stage..

The dutch sucked today, they are lucky to advance. Same as Brazil, luck will run out for them. Mexico shouldn't be parking after 1-0, that's what happen when you park after leading.

If Holland get bailed out like that by shoddy refereeing then yes, they will beat anyone.

I am watching holland v Mexico both teams are playing with intensity and defending as a group even thier attackers track back to defend, I don't know why our players can't do the same , our attackers watch when the opponent is attacking with thier hands on thier hips, this lack of urgency is hurting the team, let us see if they wake up now in the knock out stage

I'm one of those who wish for easiest path. Hope all the strong teams, Netherland, Colombia, Germany, Brazil will be eliminated before they meet us. But, everything can happen in just one game and it's better to focus with Switzerland first. Other forwards should start to score and a clean sheet for us!

I see that some people here want the easiest teams on the way to the final.

I want the most difficult path, bring'em all on, Brazil, Germany, Holland, France, whatever.

When I'll sit with my beer to watch Argentina playing the final, it'd be the most beautiful day of my life.
