Press Conference with Zabaleta and Higuain
Following Argentina’s morning practice session, Pablo ZABALETA and Gonzalo HIGUAIN took their turn to attend the press conference and address to the media.

The following are several quotes from them

Pablo ZABALETA on what he felt about the team’s performance this far

"We played against three teams with three different characteristic. The important thing is we are learning. Beyond the nine points we got from our group matches, we know that there is still room for improvement. Now comes the most decisive stage at the World Cup as the games are more like life and death"

On what he thought about the team’s attacking potential "We have a very good attacking line up and we know we must position ourselves & create chances"

Meanwhile Gonzalo HIGUAIN was asked about his feeling on not getting his name on the score sheet and that only Lionel MESSI is scoring "We must not feel despair, we know we have the ability to create chances to score anytime. We know MESSI is capable of winning a game for us anytime, he is a key player for this team"

On the prospect of playing against his Napoli teammates, Valon BEHRAMI, Gokhan INLER and Blerim DZEMAILI

"I know them very well; it will be very complicated as they are quality players. The Swiss team is a strong team which has qualified for the next stage of the World Cup. We watched every game, know their strengths and weaknesses".

HIGUAIN also believed that the team has tremendous potential; if it continues to grow we will be successful.

Changing the formation each match adjusting to the opposition doesn't exude a great deal of confidence in your own ability. brazil never change their 4-2-3-1 formation, neither they abandon their style, hell they don't even change their starting eleven(barring some cases). 4-3-3 was working, why change it?

Messi was making the runs from deep, mascherano was playing the role of quarter-back. Now accomodating maxi in the starting line-up, I'm not too convinced.

My scheme is whatever Sabella will choose. He's studied the team in the previous matches and now he should have his clear ideas on what to bring up on the battle's arena.

@di3z you are right. i was wrong in sayin that messi has to do it alone, it was dumb. maybe the correct phrase is, messi has to do it alone, but without the help of his comrades, it's almost impossible in modern day football.
sorry for still living in 86. i will try to keep up living in 2014, it's really hard.
yes, rojo is the most productive player on the field, credit to him for that. he is only 24, zabaleta almost 30, of course zaba is much more slower.

@travis I agree about Gago in most. He probably should plays still. Gago is fantastic when he make long penetrating passes to forwards but there's lack of that sometimes. Like against Iran. He is also less usefull in defence than Enzo for example.

Dear Travis, this is constructive criticism. I have noticed that you tend to do constructive criticism any time and this time too, until the last sentence, which I'll explain later why. Sorry to disagree with it anyway.

Rojo is almost a winger, he is doing his job greatly. How many passes did he do? How many tackles and dribbling did he do? If I'd compare as offensive defender Zabaleta to Rojo (same role as Rojo, but the other side), I'd take Rojo any day.

Please rewatch the matches again and see how Rojo was the most tireless player of our team, back to defend and forth to attack. He even scored, once and also Bosnia's own goal was his work too. Me, as you, was very critical of him before, but now I am starting to love him.

I said before that I disagree with your last sentence. Yes, I do. Long are gone the times when single players could win matches. Football has changed, it's not like before, now it's more physical.

Nowadays it's not "Geniuses can win matches single handedly", like Maradona. Now it's more like "Geniuses can solve matches", like Messi. Geniuses now can solve matches with the help of the team anyway.

Football has evolved, keep this in mind.

not so fast. sorry i disagree about rojo. he's still not impress me, infact not at all. he always go forward further away from his position, the back he supposed to cover, enough space for opponents to exploit, and that will come pretty soon if rojo still want to impress by going forward often.
remember, our defenders, as collective have not doing good in this 3 matches, in all areas; both left/right and the centers. that's why the nigerian player openly said the argentina defense was the weakest link of this team.
rojo also failed to block a shot from musa that leads to the 2nd goal. one of the commentators say, "what is zabaleta doing there???" when he left musa alone trying to help fede, but actually do nothing to stop the ball.
of course, rojo finally score from a corner, from countless corners argentina got in 3 matches, which is a prove that argentina is very bad in taking corners.
the only player worth given credit is messi. maybe this is messi's world cup, but he has to do it alone.

if we dont win this world cup, we are not going to win it in the next 2 decade.... this is our chance... this is our world cup, we have to win it. we have the best team, the best fwds, good mid fielders and a decent defense... we should take every game as the final...swiss is a good side, belgium is also a good side, but The Dutch is great and Brazil is mighty.

this World Cup so far has been a curse for the Europeans... Italy,England,Spain, portugal has been absolutely dismantled the outrageous displays of underdogs Chile,Colombia,Costa Rica... at least one Latin american team will reach the semifinal that is confirmed and argentina will very likely beat USA/belgium if we don't do something foolish... Yes,, argentina didn't perform as expected but in this Latin American WC,, argentina will always have a big EDGE over europeans...

Today there are two mouth-watering Matches,, it will be raining goals today.. i expect an EPIC Argentina vs Brazil Final and it is very possible... No matter how bad Brazil plays,, history and the Conditions are with them... but Chile has also destroyed spain,, a victory over Brazil in Brazilian soil is very much within their grasp... but above all,, i want Argentina vs any Latin teams(especially Brazil) because i want Argentina to win playing the most sumptuous WC final ever seen... i never liked Germany,Holland no matter how good they play and in this WC,, they will get very little support against Latin teams...

and this is going to be a special WC for Messi,James Rodriguez,Neymar.. Especially Messi because he has already won the heart of the teams he defeated... After Argentina defeated Bosnia,, the Bosnian defender wanted Messi to Win the WC.. after we defeated Nigeria,, Nigerian Coach said Messi is from Jupiter... His place among the Greatest Legends is already cemented,, A World Cup victory in Brazilian Soil,, he will win the hearts of Brazilians despite being an argentine...

It's possible that we lose to Switzerland, but it's improbable. There is a huge difference.

@outlaw when you see all the three matches again, you shall find how much gago has contributed to most of the goals. first against bosnia; one-two between gago/pipita/messi. against iran; gago intercept ball from iranian and this opens up at least 2 attacks that eventually ended up messi curling the ball for that incredible goal. mascherano did one through pass to maria that eventually led to messi's turbo shot against bosnia. mascherano and gago didn't just did some easy passes among them. they do contributed to the winning goals of argentina. this should be continue.

..............Higuain..............

I want Palacio for Higuian, Alvarez for Lavezzi and Perez for Gago in the second half.

After losing 5-2 to France, Switzerland will play as tightly as possible against a side with so many talented individuals as Argentina. Maybe it’s wise to start with the hardest working players like Lavezzi and Palacio to wear them down and bring on the more creative players (Alvarez, Higuain) after 60-65 minutes.

On an English TV channel they showed the passing stats from Messi. He hardly passed to ball to Aguero and Higuain in the first three matches. I can’t find the stats on the internet, but the number of arrows (representing passes) on a pitch (to indicate where the pass was given) was shockingly -at least to me- low. That could be an important clue to why the fab 4 was not working. As we have seen in the first two matches both Aguero and Higuain were mostly standing still when Messi had the ball instead of coming to him (to create passing opportunities) or move away from him (to create space). In the much better and more dynamic first hour of the Nigeria game the number of passes from Messi to our strikers did not increase much. Weird, not?

Rahat. I know this stats well. It say nothing. When you have match against Iran stats must be so. When you have the ball so long against Iran no wonder. most of this passes were just easy among Mascherano-Gago in the middle of field that have led to nothing. And it is not critic to Mascherano, he is our superman. Maybe a little critic to Gago.

Read the PESSIMISTS:

-> Argentina committed the least fouls among the group stage teams

-> Argentina are in the top of the group stage fair play list with only one yellow card (alongside with Germany and Switzerland).

-> Argentina had most possession in the group stage (65.6%).

-> Messi is the most rated player in the group stage.

-> Macherano is the player who made more tackles per game (17 tackles, 5.7 per game)

-> Only Toni Kroos (289) made more passes in the WC group stage than Mascherano (284)

-> Messi made the most successful dribbles in the WC group stage (17).

-> Toni Kroos and Mascherano made more accurate long balls in the WC group stage (37)

I cannot believe that Sabella would be return to 4-4-2 after the experience groups matches. I cannot believe he will not use Lavezzi aftet that what has shown and what had shown Higuain and Aguero. I love Aguero, he is just like our Romario but this tournament has shown We need as much as possible active and running players. There must be much movement. But Aguero and Higuain are players who waiting for the ball rather.Lavezzi and Palacio are in moving still. I believe that Lavezzi and Palacio can give us all what We need to really good game.

If you analyses Argentina's matches..you will come to know Aguero and Higuain has been our worst players on the pitch. Higuain just had 4 shots and Aguero had 5 shots after 3 matches..!! and Aguero's pass success rates was just above 50%..!! but Higuain pass success rate was good. If Higuain and Aguero played with their ability and form we would have scored many goals.

In the 201 minutes Aguero played he had just 51 passes, 0 crosses and 0 corners won and Lavezzi for his 61 minutes play he had 50 passes, 9 crosses and 5 corners won..! These stats for Lavezzi is very good for any team..but Lavezzi's pass success rate was also very poor..just 54%. Our other players who were having less than 70 % pass success rate than Aguero and Lavezzi are Palacio (43 %) and Biglia(67%) but both had very less time on the pitch.

Our Best passers ( in Success percentage)
1: Campagnaro: 94%
2: Garay: 91%
3: Gago: 91%
4: Mascherano:89%
5: Maxi: 87%
6: Fernandez: 87%
7: Ricky: 85%
8: Zaba: 81%
9: Higuain 78%
10 Messi: 75%
11: Rojo 73%
12: Dimaria: 70%

Mascherano has more number passes than any other player in this WC..!!

We have to improve our passing, have to utilize our corners, defenders should concentrate more, players should fight for the ball and the attackers should shoot and score more...etc

@pradi I felt Higuain's play inside the box is ok, not really bad and not really good. Remember, how he squandered the chance when Messi put him through on goal against Nigeria? If it was a fit Higuain or Aguero then it would be a certain goal. Also remember in the match against Iran when Gago put him through with a beautiful pass from the right. He only had a goalkeeper to beat and a fit Higuain would've scored that 99% of the time.

Dont know what u feel.... I felt higuain was good inside de box in last game... The prblm is when he switch to flanks or more deeper... He lost some flexibilty to body from 1 or 2 years back, is struggling some times in quick accleration, still his through balls were impressive... I think if he placed only at de box will do better, him n pal r only those good at air, we need them in box when they r on pitch...

Thumbs up sab for 4-4-2 switch... But i too feel maxi can be a super sub when we are dying for a goal, cant break de opposition defence n his powerfull long rangers will be useful... Wish to see biglia, augusto n ricky more, they r really eager for a chance to prove, to give their all for de team... If we had more natural mids like ricky or augusto or even lavezzi i think de responsibility on messi's shoulder will reduce n his main duty will only to score, then we can get much more out of him, i feel....

i dont want to offend anyone but argentina looks poor.
With aguero missing, winning every single match by 2 goal, defence plays bad, romero is scared, i think the team will not make it most likely against the netherlands or belgium before reaching the final.
I am a big fan of argentina but i have to be realistic.
The team of last world cup that i criticised for having otamendi instead of zanetti,no cambiasso, no riquelme, played better than this one.

@ Tizeboule: Of course you are not a coach, otherwise you wouldn't be here. This blog belongs to Fans. Please do not ever mention Diego as a coach.

He will be always the God of Football, but as a coach he lacked of tactical intelligence, because of his ego... on the bench now he is an excellent motivator, cheerleader, but nothing else.

Besides, his main tactical mistake was not the defence, was to leave an alone midfielder in the game against Germany, the poor Mascherano to cater to the German hurricanes. And we know the result.

Dear Tizeboule, if Sabella is to hear whatever the other are "freaking" saying, he may as well leave his post and invite the people to manage the team in a sort of consortium. But will all agree together on one thing or strategy to be taken? Certainly not. This is why there is ONE COACH.

Sabella is there to coach, not to hear what the others say. That was Diego, who didn't have any clear strategy.

You are clearly not a real fan to call Sabella mad "loco".

And you freaking shut up. This is not directed to you personally, but stop this crap, this constant whining like a toodler who cries to get his candy.

Lavezzi and run up and down but can't put the ball in the net. We need Palacio instead.

Gago needs to sit bring on Enzo, FF as well. Bring on Dimi or campagnaro to help Mascherano.

Brazil beleives they can win desptite they don't have a ronaldo ronaldhino in the attack, if it wasnt for the mexican goalie they would have got 9 points just like us. We were lucky we didn't draw IRan. So, suddenly you guys possibly think we can beat this Brazilian team at home in a final if we manage to beat the Netherlands! Those that think sabella don't need to wake of about the defense are the same ones that agree for years agoa when Diego omit ZAnetti, cambiasso, and bring a crappy defense and our nakedness was exposed to the whole world when the Germans rape Argentina up.
It will be the same thing when facing Belgium or Holland.
Argentina has serious problems behind. Everyone is saying it's too easy to get to the goalkeeper and you guys think no problem

Good thinking @ argentineblood. Why in the world Sabella hasn't brought Enzo over weak Gago, Dimichelis over FF?

second, Why is dimaria playing over 75 minutes when we were winning instead of resting the guys? Why in the world did he leave Aguero on the field and not bring Palacio in Lavezzi earlier. That would of give them a break, possibly avoid aguero's injury, have an a idea on hon messi match with these 2 forwards.

come on sabella!! wake up

I believe a 5-3-2 without even Messi is enough to beat Switzerland. I'm not underestimating Swiss. But Sabella's Team has been proving themselves for last 2 years. Keep faith.

This blog is my favorite one to read the feeling of some brothers around the world who share the same feelings like me: The full and unconditional surrender and love to the Albiceleste team.
I personally read this blog since over a year or so, and enjoyed it a lot. I do not usually write, because I am more a talkative person than a writer. This is the reason why you other brother don't see me here a lot.

Since the beginning of the Bosnia match, I am completely appalled from the negative posts here. I don't usually call people trolls, but some fans here amaze me with the venom they spit on our sweetheart (the Albiceleste), and that makes me very sad.

Some fans bash completely without any reason our much beloved team. Some of them, with some good reason, and that it's called constructive analysis, because it's ok to vent out your opinion, but bring on some good solutions, so we can discuss on that, not only negative comment.

We all know that at the very end, we are not in Sabella's mind and our comments will stay here among us, but Jeez, I cannot stand negativity. §

Imagine if we all could have the power to manipulate Sabella's mind, like a stringed puppet. We wouldn't even be of the same mind which string to pull first, and we're supposed to be one body, one Golem, Hulk, or Goku-San to go and voice our full support in the fighting arena, the stadium. If the opposite team fans scream our loud, we must scream 10 times more than them, to give our team the energy.

I make a comparison, Argentina won all these three games, getting goals but giving more. It's like at the end you have got the girlf of your dreams and you bash and blame the ways with which you got her. WHO CARES? You must have spent a lot, but you got the result you wanted.

Argentina won, so why such negativity over the way she won? You want Argentina to win by a 3-4 goals margin? So what at the end? She qualified anyway and we have got Messi back.

Argentina has changed, before it was like that Latino lover on the beach who could get the girls sunbathing at the first strike, now she is like that brave guy, not muscular, not tanned, normal but gets the result he wants at the end.

Why so? Because football has changed, as everything evolved.

You negative people, if Argentina loses, either you will say "I told you so", or commit suicide. The latter will be difficult, although some people here, without giving names, will do us a favor by commiting suicide. So you go on the first category, trolls, "I told you so" sayers. Ok, write a letter then to AFA and see if they hire you, as if Argentina loses, Sabella will get sacked. Then we will see your brilliant tactics, FIFA may also give the rest of the WC trophies directly to us.

I belong to none of the categories mentioned above. With much of delusions I had from this team, I continued to support it. This is the true fan.

I BELONG TO THE GROUP: "IN GOOD OR IN BAD, THIS TEAM WILL ALWAYS DRIVE ME MAD". I WILL ALWAYS LOVE THE ALBICELESTE, NO MATTER HOW THEY WIN OR LOSE, IT'S IN MY BLOOD AND CANNOT HELP TO INSULT IT.

P.S.: And damn it, I'M ENJOYING MESSI'S COME-BACK AND HIS GOALS WITH THE ALBICELESTE MORE THAN SEX. I enjoy all of our other player's goals, but his goals more and more.

we are not writing Argentine off but have scaled down our expatiation's of 2-4 goals per game lol.

after the 1st 3 games we appear to be a 1 man team-messi and without him we actually may not have made it to the knock out stages.

the business end is now beginning and im hoping we were paying "just enough to get through" for the 1st 3 games and now i hope we will see what the team can really do.
the niggling but that bugs me is I had the same thoughts for the copa and we never looked good all tournament.
im absolutely happy for me to be eating humble pie at the end of the tournament and nothing will mean more to me then to see messi life the cup in yellow country and I would not care if it is 1-0 in every game for us as long as we win.

I don't see how people are starting to write off Argentina after a few games of not showing what we are truly capable of. We don't need a miracle to win this world cup, all Argentina needs to do is repeat what they have shown over the years and I'm confident our guys will eventually pick it up and show up when it truly matters.

The reason why Napoli conceded a lot of unnecessary goals last season is down to their midfield which consist of Inler and Bahermi..Inler control and distribution is very poor..Bahermi will be hacking all the Argentine players so sure.

Messi is the first player to score in all group stage game since Oreste Corbatta, that was back in 1958, 56 years ago.
