Player Ratings: Argentina 3 - 2 Nigeria

Argentina played with their ultimate 4-3-3 line-up against Nigeria, defeating them 3-2 in the process. Two more goals for Messi, and finally someone else scored: Rojo.

Sergio Aguero had to be substituted towards the end of the first half after picking up a muscular injury and Ezequiel Lavezzi took his place.

In the second half, with Argentina leading 3-2, Sabella decided that Messi had done his job and should be rested to avoid any fatigue or injuries ahead of the next game. Off he came in the 63rd minute, making way for Ricardo Alvarez.

Finally, Lucas Biglia came on to the field in the 90th minute in place of Gonzalo Higuain.

I looked at the second goal, and it was not the back four entirely. It was a split second laps in the 50/50 marking in the def mid. Hopefully sabella saw that and addressed it.

as ive side before we will have accept the mantra of we will have to score more then you,it will be scary to watch but with messi we always have an ace.

our defence that so many had said sabella had fixed looks worse then ever. how can it have gone so wrong as this is supposed to be sabellas strong point.

i agree with arg lover, 100%

its important to be realistic now.

argentine will concede vs switzerland - fact
if messi plays bad - arg struggle - fact
higuain is unfit and slow - fact
aguero injury was a blessing - fact
higuain will not score this world cup - FACT

what we need

need fernandez or garay to actually score a header.
need perez so com eon for gago

@gaucho4133 but higuain is a decisive player and finisher. Without him Messi is the sole finisher on the pitch for Argentina as palace is only a poacher. Higuain most start and argentina's tournament will depend directly on how he plays by taking scoring pressure off of Lionel.

This Arg2014 gotta be the most negative person I've ever came across. Your negativity is through the roof and stop trying to predict shit when you don't know shit. You have made shit tons of useless and foolish failed predictions in the past, this will just be another failure from you.

The way you constantly finding flaws in the Argentina NT and ignore every other weaknesses all the other top teams has shown so far is downright ridiculous. Don't try to talk like all other top teams are perfect as if they have no weaknesses. If you are so sure, DO YOU DARE to bet against me whether or not Argentina will make final?? I will take any bet from you, don't talk shit if you don't dare. At the end of the day, anything can happen in a football game, and as a fan, we just gotta show faith and if you are truly an Argentina fan, then you're a disgrace to the fanbase.

There's a difference in constructive criticism than constantly bashing and bitching about the team as if they have done nothing right so far. We have won all 3 games for god sake, and you act like all the teams we have faced are the weakest in the world. Do you even realize Nigeria was the Africa cup champion just a few months ago and potentially better than Ghana and look how Ghana troubled your beloved european team-Germany.

There is a difference between a blind bias fan and a realistic fan who loves the team but also aware of the limitation of his beloved team.

A few people on here admire other teams attacking tools or defending scheme although they root for Argentina, and I don't see anything wrong with that.

Now, let's get real here, and you can read this everywhere and hear it from everyone in the world who follows this world cup:
1) Argentina is one man team.....all depends on Messi scoring ability.
2) Awful defense which means if we play against the weakest team in the world, we will concede goals. We don't have world class defenders.
3) With all the hype about our killing attacking ability, our attackers can't score....Sabella fooled the world by taking the wrong personnel to the WC....Argentina is full of goal scorers but he failed to take the right ones....he wasted spots on injured strikers.
4) Our goalkeeping is just average, and we can't make the difference with Romero since he can concede a goal from one attacking attempt to the penalty area.
5) Argentina doesn't look sharp this WC because Sabella came unprepared and the proof is that he's changing his formation/ personnel and has confused all players and also us the fans.

You can't win the world cup when having all the above mentioned barriers, nowadays one man team can't win the world cup. Aguero, who? Higuain who? Lavezzi, who? flashy names that never shine in the world cup.....They are club players play for the money. They prefer to trade their talent with equal amount of money. Lavezzi throwing water on his coach in an important moment to collect thoughts in an important match to avoid Brazil bracket side......what do you expect? you tell me.....oh now I don't belong here because I revealed the bitter truth about the team's weaknesses. I love Argentina, but I see them leaving in the QF, and if they are super lucky, they will be knocked out by the Oranje machine in the semi final.

@MaxiLopez-- you don't belong here man... you love pekerman more than argentina so you can simply just say that you are a colombian fan... Please don't watch anymore argentina matches because frankly,, you don't deserve to watcg... You try to denigrate Messi????? you think Pastore,Aimar,Riquelme are greater than Messi?????

you obviously live in 2006... in my opinion,, 2006 was the most beautiful argentine team i ever saw but YOU JUST CANNOT ACCEPT THE SIMPLE FACT THAT it was your BELOVED pekerman who killed argentina in QF against germany by making the worst tactical blunder of all time... you just cannot accept the modern reality of playing football without a playmaker... You are a beautiful football lover just like me but your fantasy and your delusion is just childish and pathetic man... I would have loved to have Riquelme,Aimar in this team having telepathic passes with messi but YOU HAVE TO ACCEPT REALITY,, that is PAST now,, now we have ONLY MESSI and he is performing WITH ALL HIS HEART out there so rather than saying pathetic baseless words against him,, Praise his Stature and his Attitude because he is THE GREATEST PLAYER OF ALL TIME and HE IS HUMBLE... but you are such a mental patient that even if messi wins argentina this WC,, you still will not say a single good thing about this team because YOU ARE SERIOUS PSYCHOLOGICAL PROBLEM and you need Help...

After completing group stage, here's my overall thought

--> Argentina has improved match after match and nobody can deny it. Formation either: 4-3-3 or 4-3-1-2

--> Our defense has improved but need good cohesion and quick back up from midfielders. On the break or counter attack we can't handle pressure, particularly when we will face against Arjen Robin /Van Persie it will be like hell. So our midfielders plus sometimes forwards have to give some necessary back up.

--> Two of our world class forwards " Aguero" and "Higuain" are injured and off form that's the fact. You can't risk on Injured and not physically complete fit player in a big match. Sabella or some from coaching staff should try to understand messi that Aguero & Higuain are not fully fit or off form for big match. Argentina has to replace Aguero for Levezzi and Higuain for Palacio at least for next game.

--> Fernando Gago has good understanding with Messi and Messi prefers Gago than anyone else. But the problem is Gago is not well equipped player on the break who can guide defense. Moreover, he too comes from major injury. May be physical issue reduces his diversity and skill. He can only pass to Messi which is a great thing because someone needs to do that but we also have to look out our overall situation. He's not so effective in all departments. I believe playing with Perez/Biglia could be a good solution but again whether they would be effective like gago for messi or be like Maxi Rodrigez who is totally not effective for the talisman. This is actually a big call. Sabella has to decide it cleverly.

--> Player's Rating:

# World Cup Player of the tournament after group stage: Leo Messi (Single handily win all 3 matches for Argentina)

# Rojo surprises us with his performance

# Romero is completely unpredictable. He could be Great / Average / Disaster

# Zabaletta, Higuain & Aguero: Man City players has some fitness issue. English league demands lot of physicality. I think Aguero needs rest at least for next game. Zabaletta not performing his best. Higuain totally in off form

# Macherano & Di Maria both hasn’t performed their best but there is a sign of improvement and they will better at the knock out stage.

# Fernandez & Garay, played decent football. Fernandez is not a world class and I am not expecting much from him, Garay is the best options from our defense.

# Gago: With Gago, Messi is happy means chances of scoring more goals but not much defensive back up. Without Gago, good defensive back up but messi may not find lot of passes from Biglia/Perez. Very critical decision.

# Maxi Rodriguz never should play for Argentina at least when Messi on the field

# Levezzi is more effective and can bring lot energy in the game. He's inclusion will give opposition defense more tough time

# Palacio: I believe starting with him would be good instead of Higuain.

Vamos Argentina

Higuain has a better finish? No one is missing so many as Higuain. And What does it mean he has more class? Nothing, absolutely nothing. Just commonplace words.

In the 2nd half, di maria wasted great counter-attacking opportunities. In the first counter-attack, he shot stright @ eneyama when he should've passed, on the other counter-attack he failed to make the cross-field pass altogether.

Garay should also have scored. A 2-4 scoreline would've been a more comprehensive victory, the game was never as close or the victory was never as narrow as the 2-3 scoreline suggests.

For Nigeria's second goal, Garay allowed emenike to receive the pass & hold the ball up, zabaleta allowed musa to run clean through & didn't track him, federico was not alert to the danger. It was a collective defensive shambles.

Ballack is right about argentina having 2 groups in the field. The attackers don't track back, except mascherano, the midfielders don't provide cover.

that's the problem of having a RW like di-maria & an AM like gago in your midfield. that's why enzo or biglia or both are necessary in the midfield alongside mascherano.

Shaqiri is fatter than higuain. Palacio's movement as a striker is better than higuain. But higuain has more class & better finishing. Aguero's injury is a blessing in disguise, but his loss of form & injury is such a shame coz we all know how deadly he can be.

I wanna see lavezzi & angel di maria in the wings with messi behind. Also biglia or enzo perez in the midfield.

Aguero must be dropped for the game against the Swiss, he is looking completely lost , uninspired and unfit on the pitch, brings down the overall confidence of the team. He should be replaced with Lavezzi - who looked hungrier and made some good runs.

@Maxi,
"After Argentina, I support Mexico (awesome) and of course Pekerman"...!!

Come on man...if you think we are so unprepared..you can go and support your other teams. We all want our strikers to defend. But none of yesterday's goal could have been still avoided by that. First one is counter attack and Gago, Zabaleta and Romero should have done better there. What our strikers can do for that..? And second goal..? It is an error. Still Defending stikers cant help there.
Actually didn't you see Higuain came to defense few times? Didn't you notice Lavezzi coming and fighting..? Come on man...you will see much of it when we face tougher opposition...! Against Nigeria it was not that much needed actually. From the QF..you can see different Argentina...everyone will fight for the team...Wait and See...!

Campa for zaba..... Then may be defensively we will get a little better, but offensively will be 0 through de right flank.... I dnt think campa has de pace n energy to cop up wit dis 4-3-3 wit gago... And hazard isn't an unfamiliar person for zaba... I still wont criticize our players... The only issue i felt wit garay n fede is pace... Other than that in such an imbalanced system like this no one can perform better... I m sure jst a single move, biglia or perz for gago make a big change in our game... No matter how strong our defense is, if we give space in midfield for de opponents to workout they will punish.... Midfield is our major or may be only severe issue...

@Maxi if you like pekerman so much why don't you go and find a "mundo-colombia" site somewhere out there and join their forums because you sound like a confused fan who thinks that pekerman is bigger than the albicelestes and that's just sad.

On this site I welcome anyone who is critical of the NT and their performances because like I said before criticism is part of passion sometimes but when it gets to a point where every post one makes is a b**ching fest about what was and will never be again without offering a sliver of constructive criticism then one suddenly find themselves transformed into a troll.

As for why nobody is picking the "tell the fab4 to defend" option, well because frankly it's a silly option with no constructive merit, I mean who the hell is gonna tell the fantastic 4 to defend, YOU?

Like I said previously the fantastic 4 system is a risk BECAUSE the fab 4 don't defend but the system is worth the risk when pipita, kun and messi are on song and since this is only true for the latter, the system itself must be dropped or atleast modified.

@Faisal what the heck was Romero supposed to do? neither of the goals were even remotely his fault. they were due to obvious defensive lapses.
Honestly you guys are taking these vendettas against certain players (namely Gago and Romero) way too far.
Have either of them been perfect, well not really there is clearly room for improvement but to dismiss their contributions thus far (gago turned the bosnia game around when he came in and Romero made several vital saves in the Iran game) is just...vindictive!

It's true that Sabella has less control over his players. Players are mostly follow The Don " Leo Messi"

So what on earth sabella is doing with this team?

Actually he's job is to build a team surrounding Messi and keep him happy cause he knows if Messi is happy then something extra ordinary could happen and that's what happened in all three group match.

Practically we didn't play well as a team. It was messi who made all the difference and his fellow colleagues sometimes helped him to do so. I am saying it cause after messi's sub's our team looked like a ship without it's captain and they were going nowhere.
If its bring us world cup I have no problem but if it's not then again we all be devastated.

We will be also lucky enough to reach semi final quiet easily. But in the semi final facing Netherlands would be fearsome challenge. Because Arjen Robin and Van Persie so quick, magnificently elegant & skillful. Romero couldn't save two goals which he should if he would a world class keeper like Buffon/Neur but he's not so I am not expecting much from him but it always concerns me because he could messed up horribly against ever inspirational Dutch team.

However, hopefully we overcome all the obstacles and become world champion after all Messi shows his true class wearing Argie jersy first time ever.

Despite all that mess, I'm like any other fan in the stadium: hoping Argentina to win by 3-2, 4-3, 5-4 or 10-9. Because that's gonna happen against Switzerland or Belgium. 5-0-5 tactics. It is clear that the players don't listen to the coaching staff. The last time I saw a coach isolated like that was Basile. It's sad. Watch Messi, he never speaks to a member of the coaching staff. Watch Lavezzi throwing water on Sabella when he gives him tactical indications. Watch Lavezzi kicking a NT coach in the bus by night. Watch the locker-room giving shit to Sabella at half time against Bosnia and demanding 4-3-3. Watch Sabella saying that the players were right. I wonder what De Michelis must be thinking in this zoo. We are tactically like Ivory Coast (5-0-5) and behaving like Cameroon in the locker-room. I still believe we can defeat Switzerland (easily) and Belgium. But against Robben, it's going to be violent...

Glad we are looking better.

having said that, it felt like, I was watching Barca at times. Every time the ball came into our half, felt nervous about our defence, just like I feel for present Barca.

De Maria tested the goalie many times and kudos to him. But I have to say, something is lacking in him. Many times a simple good touch from him would have helped us score more goals. Hopefully he will improve.

Rojo is our discovery from this tournament. He will be a legend in 10 years.

I wish Sabella had replaced Higuain with Biglia in the beginning of second half.

There was a progress, due to the style of the Nigerians game. However, we should still kept a clean sheet at least. TBH, our defense didn't meet my expectations and especially FF. He was Somehow lost! And Rojo yet again, Despite showing his eager to play and self confidence, his area is still forming a root for opponents attackers, he's getting better overall, but still defensively weak on the flanks. Basanta offers better covering in his area!

However, the main reason behind our imbalanced show is the physical condition of the remaining three of the F4 and mainly Aguero! It always looked like he isn't fit and having him as a starter is liability at this stage! Higuain, didn't get his form yet as well, he should be a one half participant due his fitness issues!

Here we lost two spots and we are running without a F4. Currently, there is no fantastic 4, there is only Leo Messi and the unpredictable De Maria. Like Batman and Roben!

It is simply, Messi's opportunity to carry the heavy weight and take us as far as he can to repeat version of 86 and takes the crown of Maradona to be the king of Argentina!

Vamos king Leo, it's your legacy!

Vamos Argentina

Overall a much improved performance, the players were oozing confidence and showing no nerves.

I hope Aguerro's injury is not serious, we might need him but we have great cover in Palacio/Lavezzi. Di maria was back to his usual tireless and incisive self. Marcos Rojo continues to prove people wrong, cut the guys some slack.

So many people on here, taking it out on federico fernandes, you quickly forget that he is the fastest center back we have, okay his game reading is not the best but he is awesome in one on one situations, in the air and putting in challenges, he is much more better than we had at wc 2010, i first saw him play for Albiceleste vs Brazil in the 4-3 win and since then i feel much more confident with the defence, he is the perfect foil to Garay.

Going forward i believe a 4-4-2 will serve us better with Kun missing Di maria should push further forward with Enzo plugged in alongside masche (double pivot) and Gago. This gives us more defensive cover in midfield.

Cheer up, Albiceleste will continue to dazzle!!!

romero - terrible. nigeria only have 2-3 good shots at goal, and scored 2 out of 3, and this is the goalie that most of you in mundo's want to start??? i don't like him since before the world cup. the most dumb decision by sabella making him as the no 1 goalkeeper. now, most of you will regret this very soon.

zabaleta - i am disappointed in him. i am one of the few who supports this guy back then, and this is what he showed at world cup stage? unaccepted performance so far. bench him.

ff & garay - slowly showing some stupidity at the back, especially ff. i don't really support him since before the world cup, but so many people here think he is better companion of garay, but now, he just making garay look so bad.

rojo - 3 games of hardworking performance from this kid. i don't really support this guy before the world cup, but maybe i'm wrong this time. this kid shows potential to grow and grow better.

gago n mascherano - good, but need to improve. control the mid very good with their both good interception, tackles and all. but mascherano is the best candidate for yellow card.

maria - lots of improvement. we're gonna see something better from him very soon.

kun - totally disappointed. he's out. injured again? better. no more nice words for him.

messi - the hero in all 3 games. argentina will go home early if not for him. argentina won't be in world cup if not for him.

higuain - his weight is the problem. his slowness ruined a lot of argentina counter attack. bench him.

lavezzi - so far so good, both attacking and defending.

alvarez n biglia - unnecessary subs.

sabella - slowly we're gonna see his weaknesses and how bad he is as a coach. sabella is even worst than pekerman/maradona/batista, no doubt about that. after 3 games, he should making the squad more and more convincing than the first match. he failed, obviously, but of course those who love him will back him up with a lot of excuses. sabella is a miserable coach. there should be no excuses anymore. sabella will lead this team no more further than round 16. switzerland will tore our defenders apart.

the defenders/goalkeeper/coach will be the reason for argentina to be home early.

romero
zaba fede garay rojo

as expected before the world cup, the most argentina weakness (this backline are even worse than 2010 team). they will be torn apart, will be crush pretty soon. unless if sabella make radical changes.

@outlaw r u serious? Zabaletta killed hazard in 3 games this season in premier league!!!
Say Watever u want about Argentinas formation nd defense but it will not CHAnge becoz the best players in Argentina r on the field ! The 1st goal came due to lack of concentration, the players got along with the celebrations of the early goal nd this definitely won't happen again! The 2nd goal was due to a misunderstanding between gago nd Fernandez sabella will definitely fix these few errors Argentina had in the game! Apart fm that all players had a gr8 game including higuain who is suddenly now hated here ... For those of u who don't know higuain watch him score in the knockout stage; the player has been without match practice since April nd he suddenly gets into the wc so don't expect him to do miracles after 2 months of injury! He has been improving game after game nd yesterday although he didn't score he played a gr8 game nd set up 2 excellent chances for di Maria on the counter that could have been scored! Also had Ricky wasn't selfish on one of the counters nd passed the ball to el pepita he would definitely has scored a goal .

No matter how much scored Higuain and Aguero for us or City/Napoli in past and how big they are in paper. We need good players right now. But they are not. There's no time. Lavezzi and Palacio are better today.

There's not time to waiting for Higuain and Aguero form. At first Higuain would have lose 70 pounds.
We are ni 1/8 already and Aguero's and Higuain's time is over I think.

@ Outlaw,
Agree with your line-up for the next matches.

The Swiss will counter-attack us. We better come prepared.

I quote Pino@ and I subscribe to it

"Lavezzi plays defense, runs all over the field, opens up the wings, which give Higuain and Messi more freedom to operate. With Lavezzi or Palacio, we defend with 8 defenders, a major plus, also, the pace is accelerated.

Aguero waits for the ball, him and Higuain have the same type of game, wait to get the ball, and play no defense and don't open up the wing play".

- So happy to finally see Di Maria getting his form.

- Rojo proving he is the right man.

- Zabaleta covered Fede, who wasn't there.

- Messi could've scored a hattrick.

- Lavezzi made a difference.

- We should play 4-3-3 but with different players:
Romero; Zaba, Fede, Garay, Rojo; Masche, Biglia or Enzo, Gago; Di Maria, Messi, Pipita

- Eneyama once again.

- Worried about Swiss more than the quarter final game.

We have to change a half of our defense. Fernandez and Zabaleta should be replaced by Basanta and Campa. Even If We will beat Switzerland then Wi will face Belgium and... What will do Eden Hazard with Fernandez and Zabaleta? It's horrific to think.
Enzo Perez could be support our defense far more than Gago.
And in front: there must be active Lavezzi and Palacio. With Higuain and Aguero We haven't chances in this tournament.

argentina all of a sudden playing shit in defence that is a big concern if sabella has any brain he will try to fix this by playing double pivot means 2 defensive midfielders and mayb basanta/demichelis for fernandez 1 mistake can cost us in the ko stages and zabaleta also playing poorly every attack is coming from that side gago helping him or not he should perform better now aguero is out its kind of blessing in disguise as he was unfit and playing poorly lavezzi/palacio will give width to the attack and also defensively they are good with good workrates also i feel mascherano not performing as upto expectation he need to be careful not to advance much we need him more in defensive third rather as a creative player we have many options there here i think perez can be used he is great in defensive duties also great in creative duties also

i was very dissapointed to see messi not scoring the hattrick sabella may play him until 70-75 minutes to get the oppurtunity hattrick chance not come often and its too hard to achieve that in knock out and why not perez was tried i still beyond my thinking

The game was practically over when Messi left, Nigeria never threatened.
Maybe you were scared as a spectator, it was your subjective feeling. But you won't find any neutral saying Nigeria was close to level the game.

Gago's back pass to assist the nigerians second goal was terrible and fernandez had a horrible game. Zabaleta gave too much space inside waiting on fernandez to recover. Aguero was absent for 35 minutes and Sabella almost cost us by taking out Messi too early causing nigeria to attack more and NO options for Lavezzi and DiMaria countering....say what you want about keeping Messi rested, he has 6 days to rest and should have played until minute 80 or so...

Fernandez was horrible in defense on both goals!! Didn't support Zabaleta's inside on the first goal and out ran on the second goal and throughout the whole goal! he is our achilles heal.
