Sabella: It Was Good To Finish First

In a post match press conference, manager Alejandro SABELLA told the media that he was happy that Argentina tops their group and also their performance against Nigeria.

"It was good to finish first; this is what we have been aiming for. We had more mobility, a different speed and rhythm changes. We also had many scoring chances to extend our lead."

SABELLA said. He also mentioned that overall the team had some improvement and this is also a positive sign as the tournament progresses.

"I am satisfied with 9 points. We have to consolidate on what we have done well and improve our mistakes."

On AGUERO’s injury "Kun had a muscular problem, we will continue to see how this evolves."

On whether the team’s defense is a matters of concern "We are an attacking team and sometimes an attacking team does have problems. Beyond that, I think the defense is doing a great job."

He also praised Ezequiel LAVEZZI for having a good game after replacing AGUERO. On how he felt about Lionel MESSI’s performance

"We already know MESSI. Players of his stature by large know what they can do and can do whatever they want."

And the following are his last words.

"Being World Champion is the desire of every person, not only mine but of all Argentina fans, players, coaches dream about it. Though are roles are different, we are all in the same boat we are fans of the Argentina National Team"

In the 2nd half, di maria wasted great counter-attacking opportunities. In the first counter-attack, he shot stright @ eneyama when he should've passed, on the other counter-attack he failed to make the cross-field pass altogether. garay should also have scored. A 2-4 scoreline would've been a more comprehensive victory, the game was never as close or the victory was never as narrow as the 2-3 scoreline suggests.

Yes it is good to finish first, but it is no good if you can not learn from mistakes and weaknesses and improve quickly.

No the defense is not doing great job, and it needs reinforcement from midfield. And this one may cost us the title that we all have been waiting for for 28 years.

Yes Lavezzi did good job and shall be given a chance to start the next game, and may be part of the answer to my second point.

Yes Messi can do whatever he wants, but he is a human and there may be, just may be, a match in which he may not be able to deliver.

Yes we are in the same boat with different roles. We all want to reach the promised land and enjoy the ultimate prize.

Good luck Sabella!

Vamos Argentina!!!

i agree, as soon as messi went off we didn't look ok and threat any more

lavezzi was good and i really hope sabella sticks with him on the right as he runs, and offered better protection for defence. we really need palacio to start now

i still think our right side is week and enzo would fix that solution if he came on for gago but i dont see that happening. gago will stay in team cos of messi as will higuain.

everyone wants argentina to improve and even campa coming in for zaba or fede might improve the defence

It's true that Sabella has less control over his players. Players are mostly follow The Don " Leo Messi"

So what on earth sabella is doing with this team?

Actually he's job is to build a team surrounding Messi and keep him happy cause he knows if Messi is happy then something extra ordinary could happen and that's what happened in all three group match.

Practically we didn't play well as a team. It was messi who made all the difference and his fellow colleagues sometimes helped him to do so. I am saying it cause after messi's sub's our team looked like a ship without it's captain and they were going nowhere.
If its bring us world cup I have no problem but if it's not then again we all be devastated.

We will be also lucky enough to reach semi final quiet easily. But in the semi final facing Netherlands would be fearsome challenge. Because Arjen Robin and Van Persie so quick, magnificently elegant & skillful. Romero couldn't save two goals which he should if he would a world class keeper like Buffon/Neur but he's not so I am not expecting much from him but it always concerns me because he could messed up horribly against ever inspirational Dutch team.

However, hopefully we overcome all the obstacles and become world champion after all Messi shows his true class wearing Argie jersy first time ever.

Sabella had the chance to introduce, Perez to the field to replace Gago and see how does as a box to box man. Gago was decent, but he should get a bit of rest!

Aguero, Higuain, Gago aren't' fully fit! And even Di Maria isn't on his %100 fitness level.
If all the above names, were fully fit, we would've been on a different note!

Funniest moment of the game:

Lavezzi comments: Sabella is always hypernervous. I sprayed water to cool him down.

Priceless :-)

Can't speak for everybody but I don't think anyone was setting out to make Sabella look bad it's just that Argentina's been burned so many times with over confidence and people don't want to see that happen again.
Saying that I have to admit that sabella is a smart man who knows the value of humility and he's definitely right about the team needing to improve and lets hope that he gives them the opportunity to do just that.

Sabella came out and said "We must improve" after the game vs Nigeria. You have to love people who pick certain quotes to make somebody look bad.

Regarding kun, it may surprise some of you but he started in only 7 games (scored an impressive 5 goals from those) at the WCQ plus the 20min or so in the away game against Colombia.
Lavezzi subbed for him throughout the qualifiers and the team did just fine.
This team has played without pipita (the last 3 WCQ games), without Masch (the paraguay away game), without Angel (the away colombia game) and without god..er...messi! (the last 2 WCQ games) and they won all those games save for the final game where Sabella fielded a B side.
The point I'm trying to make is that this team has shown consistently that it's stronger than the sum of its parts but due to the overall team's subpar performances and Messi's second coming, I am afraid that this team is forgetting the spirit that got it through the qualifiers in such a dramatic fashion.

"I think the defense is doing a great job" I pray to god that Sabella is just trying to positive here because any novice could see that the defensive setup (not necessarily the defense) needs a rethink.
If Diego's coaching days have taught us anything is that hubris is a b**ch!!

no 4-3-3 will be risky argentina dont have that much quality in defence and also in 4-3-3 system we have good dm good attacking mid but dnt have a decent holding midfielder like riquelme or xavi or even modric its quite essential thats why we suffers defensively and also in midfield we lack the height so very few aerial dues has won by us thats why alvarez presence is must i have seen messi played very well in 4-4-2 formation also sabella employed 4-4-2 often its his plan-b against bigger opponents

"the defense is doing a great job"
Oh, oh, another delusional remark and this time from our coach. Read the newspapers, listen to the analysts on tv. They are all saying the same thing: defense was bad from both midfield and our back four. Nigeria's first two chances were goals. Talking about efficiency... (hello Higuain).

We need to improve defense drastically if we want to win the WC. First Fernandez needs to be replaced and second midfield needs to be strenghtened (one striker less for Perez or Biglia). If we play this line-up against Ghana or come semi's (Netherlands or Mexico) we will be torn apart.

I wonder what Fazio and Caballero were thinking at their holiday destinations yesterday.

Is there a chance to add an option in the poll:

Play with 4-3-3 but drop the fab4 by playing Biglia or Enzo next to Masche, leave more room for Gago and push Di Maria to play next to Pipita and Messi ?!

Yes I agree, Aguero burned himself to win EPL with City; unlike Messi he fought injury and risked everything; I remember City's last game when he was so involved that he even got into altercations with the opponent's players... anyways, I am happy with Lavezzei.

Same with Higuain, I read somewhere that he has gained a considerable amount of weight, which is pathetic, not sure if it is true or not but his game has been a clear indication of that.

Seems like Aguero will miss the rest of the WC. Sad, but he was obsessed with winning the EPL and not resting his injuries which is the opposite of what Messi did. My only concern is were thin in numbers when it comes to our strikers.

Does anyone know what Augero situation is like?
I want all our boys ready to fire! I hope he is ok..but he really didn't look sharp at all first 2 games.
