Alejandro SABELLA confirms 4-3-3

Alejandro SABELLA has confirmed that Argentina will plat a 4-3-3. Here's what he had to say:

"There are no possibilities, the formation will be 4-3-3, unless if there is a need to change, than I'll do it. It's difficult to predict about tomorrow. Iran are very physical and a tough team to play against. Different qualities compared to Argentina."

"Against Iran we must move with the ball fast and find space. MESSI always tells me he likes to play 4-3-3. That's not something new and he said it with respect. We don't have any problems. We want to win against Iran and we also want to play better."

"Players love to say something and it's good to hear their feedback. Sometimes even coaches can learn from players. If you dont accept criticism, they say you're stubborn. If you do, they say you're weak. I just try to think what is good for the team."

dammage7 I agree. We must stop with treating Messi like our Messiah. If We will be still thinking about Messi We will not get very far.

@ tamthebam
I hope you are right. An angry Messi wanting to achieve something people will talk about in years to come is perfect. He has been lacking the over my dead body attitude in the national team for way too long.

A hungry, concentrated team can steamroll the competition in the next 2 or 3 matches

Guys I watched the Bosnia game again and I noticed something. Remember that free kick of Messi's in the second half? the one he hit way over the bar? That was the low point for him, he stared at the ground. Then he looked up and said to himself " F--k this! The next time he received the ball he dribbled past a Bosnian, played a one-two with Gonzalo and you all saw the rest! I believe that was a big moment for Messi, by force of will he scored! Come the moment, cometh the man! Have faith brothers and sisters! VAMOS ARGENTINA!

sandy,
it is precisely because of the prevalent attitute like yours in argentina, "we will reach the semi final easily" that sabella is so important for us ... 20 years i have heard a similar attitude...but in the world cup "easy" turns difficult very fast, just as easily like uruguay and italy was going to defeat costa rica easily...

sabella knows that... Bosnia has an elite offensive team, and despite the criticism for starting a 532, it led to a 1 0 first half win, and then he made good strategic changes that created spaces for messi, which is a lot more than tata martino, maradona, batista, and the previous coaches were able to...

bosnia was shocked by the change from a 532 to a 433 at half time...

ourdefense and offense will work better when others have to keep adjusting to our changes in formation...

I fear the swizz in round 2. They were stupid playing so offensive when only 2 down in first half. France got a good unit. We need to start playing as team and not individuals like 2010. Peterman played as a team

Sabella is a coach who is not bounded by any sorts of pressure.. he does the right thing for the team,, understanding the situation deeply..

We need ANOTHER win,, that is what counts... not by how many goals... In a WC where Underdogs are toying with the big guns,, any Win for any team at this stage,, must be seen as a God's gift... the nature of this WC is so turbulent that you cannot predict a single game with the right scoreline...

I respect Sabella's words. However I would say, a coach has to design his strategy to the strength of his players. He shouldnt pick up a defensive strategy when his players main strength is attack.

I still believe a strong defence wins a tournament, however we should concentrate on our strengths.

I'm a die hard Argentina fan but I can't go beyond the reality and I know that Argentina will struggle against Iran. Iran is super defensive team. Please don't keep overconfidence while predicting the score.

And just wanted to add a logical backup to the comment below:

Although we are an attacking powerhouse, we aren't kings possessions. Sabella's system always tends to accept the play and rely on counter attacks, especially in the 2nd half. That's why I said our defense and Romero would win us the WC if played their hearts out and kept awake for every single second of this competition!

We play by the abilities of our players, and since we are able to scatter all the opponents back, there is no worry with our attacking force.

What is going to win us the WC, is how solid our backline would remain and how successful Romero would be between the posts!

@pep
sabella's name will come first only when we play well as a team, i mean when all the departments of the game perform coherently. in the match against bosnia, it didn't happen. the only thing that separated the two teams was messi. if this continues to happen, even if we win the world cup, it will be considered as messi's world cup just as 86 is considered as maradonas world cup. it doesn't matter what i think about it or what you think about it. i would be very happy to be proved wrong and i want to see argentina playing well as a team.
the bad thing about it is that, if argentina loses, then it will be considered as due to messi only. people will question his commitment to the NT. worst of all, if sabella is criticized, then it will be only for excluding tevez only!
with respect to all our opponents, i would say that we will reach semi very easily, even without messi, or sabella!

lets be frank, at times it seems like the only who understands what is going on seems to be sabella...
constantly he has to keep reminding the press of the dangers of "triunfalismo" ... to be more humble and not to underestimate any rival...

meanwhile so many of the fans in argentina still get angry because rojo is on the team and not tevez, as if they played the same position... and the press hammers sabella in a game that argentina won, where the coach made 2 very effective changes at half time when already winning 1 0, against one of the best offensive teams in the world, and who just a week ago beat the same mexico that tie costa rica...

everyone, including messi, seems to be forgetting that in the last 5 world cup we have not make it to the semi finals and that the last one, we were masacre for having the attitude, "somos argentina, no vemos al rival"....

i hope sabella manages to follow his own ideas under so much pressure... praise to sabella, and to messi and the team...

@ pablo.d and Faizal

i completely agree with your views. what makes argentina special (if there is anything special) is messi. there is nothing brilliant about the coach, goal keeper, defense, or midfield(?). what makes us special is messi. if we wins this world cup, i am sure that it will be just because of one reason, messi. i am not saying that messi alone can win the wc. but he is the key player.
in the match against bosnia, what separated the two teams is clearly messi. eventhough many of us are not completely satisfied with his performance, if he wasn't there, the result would have been different!

"Tomorrow I want to see passion, I want to see hard work (no more walking while staring at the green grass)"
I 100% agree and add to it move into space and pass the ball to a fellow Argentine as that 1st game some of the passing was like watching schoolboys football.

of course we don't actually know but maybe some of team actually tried to tell sabella to change tactics but he would not hence speaking in public.

remember sabella did not want the fab 4 as this is not a sabella style of football as his style is far more defensive, the fab4 is not his tactic or selection and is against sabellas mantra, the fab4 happened by accident because of injuries, sabella did not want it to continue but messsi insisted.

personally im very sure the fab 4 is the only way we will win this w/c, we will win because of out fab 4 and not because of trying to play defensive.

LOL! @theophilos thanks alot for that kind remark but this site is a true gem and most of the posters on here are astute and level headed, but you also have to remember that this is a haven for albicelestes fanatics so it isn't surprising to see passion overcome reason on this site.

As I remarked before this world cup has been nothing short of remarkable, the best I've seen since probably the '82 edition where teams have brought on their attacking game and defense/-ve football is all but extinct up to this point.
For Argentina this is a double edged sword, since the albicelestes are renowned for their attacking football one would expect them to rule this attack minded world cup and if they don't put 4 or more past Iran and then another 3 against Nigeria then people would view Argentina as an under-performing side and you know what....that's fine!!!!
After having watched so many world cups I've concluded that balance and slow-steady mentality wins the race every single time.

It is very important for our boys in white and blue not to get wrapped up with living up to other people's goal scoring explorations but rather take a page out of the German rule book and view every game as a chance for improvement, a chance for learning and most importantly as a stepping stone for the next incoming challenge.

I won't lie, tomorrow I have my hopes set for a BIG win but after what happened to Argentina in 2002 I've learned to tamper my expectations and accept the most unlikely of outcomes, so yeah I won't be surprised with a draw or even a loss (yes IT CAN HAPPEN!).

Tomorrow I want to see passion, I want to see hard work (no more walking while staring at the green grass) and I want to see the foundations that took 2 long years of WCQ realized.
A marginal win with all the above elements realized would be for more important to me than an insipid win with a flattering scoreline that obscures the truth (remember the big 3-1 win against Mexico in 2010? The scoreline was impressive but the reality was that the team was awful!).

Me too,I do not have problems what Messi says.Yes The stakes are higher for Messi than anybody else. It is just that some things are better said and discussed in private. For the teams sake. And Messi is an importamt member of the team.

Vams Argetina***

I have a strong desire, wish, feeling whatever it is that Argentina are going to add a third star to their shirts.

will it be wrong? If I say, Messi single handily won the match against Bosnia & Herzegovina since Messi was the reason for both of our goals. I doubted if we could win against Bosnia without Messi as his second goal was quiet brilliant, a symbolic Messi goal.

So, it's right to say if we fail to win world cup Messi to be blame and if we manage to win world cup messi to be praised. That means he has every right to say anything against Sabella's tactics but not in public but in dressing room or in private chat. Because we need to be united and have to show the media world that we are united and hunger for win.

I have no problems with what messi says because he had earned that right to speak up as every thing is on messi's shoulders, if we lose this cup the world will say messi failed not sabella failed, all the pressure is on messi.

I really question sabella if he thinks trying to play a system that does not work for us is the one for us.

we all support the team 100% but for me I still question sabella's tactics and the 23 who are selected, im also happy for me to be proved wrong but I will say we wont win this w/c because of sabella's genius it will be because of messi like maradona in 86.

@all the Argentine fan all over the world :

Please don't be over confident. We should not thinking much about whom we will face in the world cup final rather we should only focus on our next game and enjoy every bit of each game and just hope, our beloved Argentina come over each hurdle quiet comprehensively.

Expectation against Iran Game:

A solid performance from every department of our team. Accurate pass, great mobility, combined team work and 100% dedication for the game that would be my demand from the players. If we can achieve that then certainly we would be able to win quiet handsomely.

Score Line: 2-0 / 3-0 or even 2-1 / 1-0

Because that will give extra hunger to the boys to do even better in next game. I always prefer grow with slow & steady but smartly so that we can peak at the right time and right moment when we need badly our peek form from all of our players.

"Vamos Argentina"

Messi better be careful when he makes remarks in public.Everybody knows that the best chances of Argentina winning this world cup depends mostly on getting the best out of Messi, and that requires putting a suitable attacking formation and set of players that connect well with him. What i want to say is he should keep such remarks and discussions with team mates and coach private and secluded.

el pipita is one of the few level-headed posters on this site. Any World Cup that has Costa Rica winning a group that also had Uruguay, Italy and England is one that has officially become IMPOSSIBLE to predict. So some of you need to stop speculating on who Argentina will face in the semis and finals. First they need to win their group, starting with what could be a Costa Ricanesque Iran team tomorrow.

Messi was just as frustrated as all of us, how many people in here were surprised or complaining about him losing the ball more than any other time, or how he wasn't on the ball, gone missing, had to go back to collect the ball....etc

We play to our strengths gentleman, there is no tomorrow, there is no we don't need to go full speed or full power.

What happened in the first game was a learning experience but its done and over with.

The fearsome foursome need to take center stage and impress, not just their fans but they need to believe that they are just as good as anybody because confidence is a major contributor to success.
