Player Ratings: Argentina 2 - 1 Bosnia Herzegovina

To everyone's surprise, Sabella started Argentina's 2014 World Cup campaign with a 5-3-2 formation instead of the expected and more tested 4-3-3 that was so successful in the CONMEBOL qualifying campaign.

It meant that Higuain was kept on the bench and Hugo Campagnaro was introduced as an extra CB alongside Federico Fernandez and Ezequiel Garay, with Zabaleta and Rojo deployed on opposite flanks. Gago was also initially rested and Maxi Rodriguez replaced him as Mascherano's partner in midfield.

However, after being gifted an own goal, Sabella's cautious attempt didnt go too well in the first half and so he reintroduced Higuain and Gago directly after the break in place of Campagnaro and Maxi, reverting back to the original 4-3-3 formation.

Argentina played much better in the second half going forward, though it was evident the players were over anxius, nervous and not firing on all cylinders. Messi finally got on the scoresheet again for the first time since 2006 to make it 2-0 for the Albiceleste. However towards the end of the game, in the last 10 minutes, Bosnia got a deserved consolation goal.

Seeing that Argentina were at risk of losing the lead, Sabella quickly brought on Lucas Biglia in place of Aguero to add more defensive power and secure the win.

My thoughts on the game:

- Sabella was too scared that he started with 3-5-2 instead of the regular 4-3-3, but I guess a part of that was the fact that Gago and Higuain weren't fully fit.

- We were lucky to score fast, and if we kept playing with the same starting line up I doubt Bosnia would score any goal. But Messi was frustrated for playing alone the whole first half.

- The team is still depending fully on Messi, but that wasn't the plan. The fact that Di Maria and Kun weren't in their day led to that.

- Our back line was good, but they weren't fully confident. And if Fede managed to get the ball first, we could've won without conceding, but I guess we are lucky we did concede to focus more.

- Had Argentina managed to score a 3rd before Bosnia's goal, things would've been totally different, and we could've won by 5 or 6 goals. But again Kun and Di Maria weren't at the half best, missing easy chances and not creating enough.

- Higuain clearly needed more time, and if he start the Iran game, I am confident he'll reach at least 6 goals in the tournament.

- Lavezzi was a must sub, but I guess Kun's got a knock and Sabella was too scared to replace him with an offensive player. Again, the goal we conceded made the difference.

- In the first half, we clearly played with no center midfielders. But we had the number to push back and forth, and that scared the Bosnians.

- Hopefully Arengina will go far in this World Cup, and win it. Slow and steady will give us all we need. The fact that we are playing easier teams will give us the boost we need, and in the end we'll play Brazil where Messi will win it.

I know they are not on the list but the Argentine supporters in the crowd 10+
they were so noisy at times they commentary was drowned out, their is a reason we were voted best supporter's at the last few w/cs and yesterday again showed it.

"This was, of course, his big build-up. Messi at the Maracana - that's where iconic football moments are made. And for a long time it was weighing not only on his mind but on that of the team. He was statistically the worst player on the pitch in the first half, losing possession 15 times."

Game was not good. Messi goal was great, other than that, he was not good. Losing ball all the time and taking too much for himself. Tough, he improved after goal.

Defence was not good, too many good chances for Bosnia. I don't know, why you keep whining on Zabaleta, he was one of the best for us.

I see Higuain is in a bad form lets admit here. Other than one pass to Messi, he didn't look like #9 to me. Sabella preparation for the game was weak when I saw other coaches came prepared.
Sabella changed his starting 11 million times already in friendlies and training session and in live matches, this is not going to help the team.
I still believe that Palacio came to training camp with injury that got aggravated in the friendly game, so both Higuain and Palacio were selected as strikers with injuries besides Aguero was not completely recovered. Sabella should have omitted unfit player like Colombia did to their Falcao, France did to their Ribery. Argentina has plenty of strikers to chose from.....the problem is not with our defense, rather with the form of our strikers and that's why we can't score enough goals. The coaching decisions are still in doubt and might cost Argentina this world cup.

One more thing, I thought we have the advantage of Brazilian weather but I see European teams get more adjusted to it and we are the ones suffer from the humidity and heat.

Sabella didn't give too much respect to Bosnia, the real wording is that he was scared too much and indecisive. Pekerman and Argentina would do wonder this world cup if they worked together again.

Messi will do magic and can reach the semi final this time around, but a world cup? I doubt it....I have a feeling that Sabella is not the man, and Romero is not the right goal keeper to do it, let's be real here please.

No fighting spirit at all, not even implied fighting spirit, Captain role was missing in this department.

che Guevara, Sabella tried something when many in his shoes wouldn't and I doubt he'll do it again.

He did his job by making the proper adjustments and all was well but I felt the players got too relaxed except Messi who wanted to score more.

As I said before, I don't like to predict, but I predict IRAN will feel the pain on Saturday.

2006: Italy had a tough time getting out the group, drawing with USA of all teams..In the second round, Italy could only manage a 1 goal win over lowly Australia..Italy best game at the 2006 world cup was against Germany in the semifinals..

2010: Spain lost to Switzerland in the opening game and also struggled to fend off teams convincingly in the group like Chile and Honduras..Spain struggled during the quarterfinal against Paraguay. Paraguay got a penalty to score on Spain to take the lead but they couldn't capitalize on the opportunity. Spain only manage to win the game in the 80+ minutes by 1 -0..

Ok, Argentina did not give some members here and some in the media the fantasy start they have been hoping for, crushing Bosnia by 5 - 6 goals..Haven't we seen this scenario before in 1998 against Jamaica for the opening game and in 2006 against Serbia for the opening game? How did it workout for Argentina when we need goals the most in the latter rounds of those world cups?

I was not satisfied with the first half and it seems like Sabella was too worried about not losing after seeing the previous games of Brazil and Spain..Sabella went into the game as if Argentina was playing Bolivia in La Paz at high altitude, this was basically an home game for Argentina, so why so defensive?Sabella showed Bosnia too much respect (not saying Bosnia is a bad team though)he should have played his normal game..Sabella need to instill more confidence in his players and proffered formation..He (Sabella) has been practicing 4-3-3 everyday leading up to the opening game then all of a sudden he choose to change it for the 5-3-2 formation a couple days before Argentina kick off..This does not give players confidence at all..Sabella made a mistake and he corrected it in the second half.

Again Maxi for me is a winger/striker but Sabella seems to play Maxi in the first game because of his world cup experience, that's how it look to me..Again Sabella did not trust new comers like Gago and Perez to start in a world cup opener, he's the coach and he needs to do a better job with the players on the squad..Argentina has a great squad that will do great things at this world cup, its up to Sabella not to hinder the team abilities moving forward at the world cup..

I know it is easy to criticize but after the shocking display of first half match why not?
what the hell was the coach thinking repeating the same awful midfield line that cost us 4 goals against Germany 4 years ago? Sabela made me re capyulate one of the worst nightmares i had encountered in my life, thogh, he had a plenty of options.
People are criticizing Messi and Aguero with out any aparent reason.Ther was no link with midfield at all.Messi has tried a couple of times to try deep playmaker role which he is not acustomed with at least under Sabela unless Gago is there serving as a bridge.
While watching the game with my friends i was shouting and mumbling the whole first half aginst two peoples, Sabela and Maxi Rodregez, this guy is by the way the curse that am sensing in our enroute to the finals.
To wind up, please Mr. Sabela don't be riduclous by using shit players like Maxi you are exposing and underusing the huge talent of the world not only Argentina, the likes of Messi, Higuein and Aguero. Plus i don't want the likes of Maxi near the midfield, what a useless player he is and unbelievably make it ahead of Banega and Gaitan.
Sorry for being emotional and using some offensive terms.
Yet Vamous a zillion times!!!!!!

arghentina will switch to 4-3-3

maxi actually would have been ok in 4-3-3 with masherano di maria, exp vs weaker teams, but no t3-5-2

di maria needs to get his act together

argentina doing too many sloppy passes inc messi, mashernao.

they are not pirlo or riquelme.

we need ot play 4-3-3 next match and after half time let ricky and enzo perez and lavezzi come on.

We cant criticize maxi alone... Where was di maria, a player in such a form... Itz all about de tactical set up... It was 8 players in our own half in 1st half, no ball movement, no forward passes, no creativity in midfield.... The good thing is every year chsmpions start poor... Hope for de best... One thing is sure, sabella need to grow up, we wont go anywhere wit dis mentality....

Why on the hell Maxi is still there? Nothing against him
personally, but apart from that wonder goal against Mexico, his contribution with the national team is very very limited. Ricky in place of Maxi who got more stamina and creativity and capable of switching as a creative as well as defensive mid-fielder as per the situation, should be given the chance. Our long run in the tournament depends much on how Gago, Ricky and Perez used efficiently.

I saw an evaluation on tactical set up of bosnia for messi... 3 men to sorround him every time he get de ball, even at half line n our own half at times... That s de reason he cant hold long n move forward... To overcome this we need to target de other striker n shud be der good amount f supply from mid... Then automatically they lose concentration on messi n he can unleash... Eagerly waiting for de next, more than de yesterday's...

Instead of all the Negativity how about taking some Positives
*Romero made some good saves, Intervene in some of Pjanics great through balls, and actually showed he can catch, Unlucky to get scored on.
*Rojo-This guy is not getting hyped but he did better than Zabaleta. I think he is mentally strong with all the pressure from his first worldcup.
*Gago- Shows why Argentina with him are lethal.
*Messi-scored hopefully this gives him some confidence now maybe score 2 more against iran to get even more
Aguero-Sure he missfired but I remember he said a couple months ago how he might not scored during group stages but aslong as he makes difference in knock outs its
Other Positives-
Good ref for us
532 wont be used again
we got many rest days for Higuain palacio and Gago to be fit.
3pts against hardest team. We should top our group. now Nigeria and Bosnia will fight till death next week and Nigeria will be tired.

Sabella knows now what NOT to do for the coming games.
The first game and the nervousness that comes with it is out of the way.
Messi scored and saved the day.
El Pipita and GaGo got some playing time.

IRAN will feel the pain this coming Saturday and I don't often predict or like too but they will.

elpipita- thank you brother for the booster here.

I know and I believe in every single word you've said, but this is us, Argentine diehard fans as greedy as the fire to its fuel. Watching the Argentine orchestra on the green theater is our fuel that keeps up the heat of our passion to the beauty of the game, this is how we used to be, even though being a title less, we were proud of our men, cause we knew they were the best as they always are.

Losing with pride is much easier to absorb than winning in shame!

I know how do I sound here, but this is passion my man!

However, for once, I truly believed that we will look different after this match, since we failed to impress. Unlike the previous versions, where we used to steal the hearts of Football lovers whenever they watched us and yet, we ended up out of pocket!

This feeling keeps the hope of progressing during the tournament, and it's a marathon like you said. Therefore, we are going to get quicker as the laps heat up when they get closer!

Bring it on rivals, show what you got competitors. We aint gonna surrender!
And if Sabella fears you the whole Argentina don't!

Ok so Our beloved Albiceleste won a game playing below their (and our) high standards. If you ask me, it's an extremely positive sign because our team won playing their C game. When you can win a match against a good team like Bosnia playing your C game, then the team is looking great for the tournament because we have world class players and the cream always rises to the top.

A huge weight has been lifted off Messi's shoulders. You could see this in his celebration of his goal...awesome display of passion and relief. When was the last time someone saw Messi react like that when he scored a goal. It means he will be a lot more relaxed which in turn means the team will relax and start to shine.

Have faith people....something special is going to happen in this WC!

For that goal i criticise de midfield first.... When they hold de ball n came slowly to our defence, there was not any, any kind f pressure from our midfield..
Second fede, didnt read de game quickly...
Third romero, no need to com off de line imo, it was a tight angle for de striker, staying on line might hav given fede or garay time to intercept...
Fourth garay, he didnt come to goal line when romero went off line, he was only 2 or 3 steps away from goal line n shud hav expected a chip in or beaten shot to goal, if he has got that position cud hav easily cleared...

I agree abnormal, rojo is very skillfull(need little more composure), i see a big move for fede n rojo aftr dis WC...
We need 2 DMs imo, pressurising at de middle f de park make dfnc better than adding 5 dfndrs n last minute ditching...
I wanna see a positive show against iran, a back wit bang prfmnc, dat is must to earn back our fans' n players confidence...
I wanna see sab using our midfielders more....
My requirement against Iran, a mininum of 5-0.

It was big lesson of humility for us. I saw so much critic and mockery to other fovorits here. Some people pointing out any tinies mistake our rivals in Brazil and in friendly matches. But We did most badle. Spain was better but they hadn't lucky. If not that own goal We probably didn't score because in second half Bosnia has forced plays more open game.
But good thing is: I think We have quite good defence already.

many opinions have emerged here.. but if understood the nature of the game then you will be bound to say that:

1)Sabella will NEVER use 5-3-2... it is a formation which requires a true enganche like Pastore or Riquelme and we have neither of them so sabella made a huge mistake there...

2) He realized his mistake in the 2nd half,, made two perfect subs and changed the formation to 4-3-3 and the result was that Messi has scored the goal of the tournament..

3)Some people are saying that argentina played a very bad game and they were lucky and all.. What would you say about Brazil??? Were they convincing against Croatia in front their own fans??? the opening game is always filled with Nerves so it was very natural that this team didn't give their 100% BECAUSE THEY DON'T NEED TO.. Italy and Spain won world cups playing terrible football in the opening game,, they grew game by game THEY LEARNED FROM THEIR MISTAKES and that is how you become champion... similarly,, this argentine team has a lot of room for improvements which is hugely positive sign... You are just an idiot if you think it the negative way...

4)Sabella will play 4-3-3 because it suits this team perfectly.. if we go ahead by 2 or 3 goals then he may switch to 4-2-3-1 or 4-4-2 but he will start every match 4-3-3 that is for sure... He said it in the interview that keeping Messi happy is the only way for this argentina team to shine and messi was very happy yesterday when he switched it 4-3-3.. Sabella was only experimenting and he found out the formation which he will never use...

5) Messi has scored the goal of the tournament.. 8 years later,, he breathed a heavy sigh of relief.. It is a symbolic sign which shows that now messi will top gear in the remaining games of the WC.. This WC will be his MAGNUM OPUS..

7) It was an absolute joy to see thousands of Argentine supporters in Maracana...I hope the number stays the same when we meet Brazil in a Legendary Final...

Sabella shoots himself in the leg when he don't pick player like Gaitan or Salvio to replace Di Maria when he plays like yesterday. Di Maria had matches like that always. And he will have. But We haven't anyone speedy player to replace him.

We need Palacio rather than Higuain. Palacio is more active, brisk and lightly than Pipita and therefore he extends lines of defends our rivals. There was lack of motion yesterday and We need player like him.

Gago is essential. One touch ball of him are fantastic.

Haman azizi try not to get too worked up about this simply because it won't do anyone (especially you) any good.

Look I was born in late 82 but I am constantly bragging to my friends about the fact that I watched almost every world cup game since 1970! and if there is one thing I learned is that the WC is a marathon not a sprint, there are times when you're feeling good and running freely and there are other times where you're out of breath and you feel like quitting.
Winning the marathon doesn't mean you won't struggle at times or you won't be out of breath but rather adjusting to the highs and lows that you will inevitably face.

The dutch in 78 (sans Cryuff), the Germans in 82 (minus the Algeria controversy), 86 and 2002 all struggled at the group stage but they just got better and better as the tournament went on.
Italy in 82 were abysmal at the group stage but they found their groove in the second round and they killed Argentina, Germany and that fine Brazil team that the world keeps talking about.
Brazil in 1994, Italy in 2006 and Spain in 2010 didn't set the world on fire at the group stage and frankly they all looked average alot of the time against mostly average teams but they all improved.

To cut my unnecessarily long story short, the world cup is a process, a process by which a team is constantly tinkering and improving things, that process doesn't stop with a team starts it's first game, it stops when the team plays to the final whistle of it's last game.
It's still early days and our boys will get their groove back, it happened in the qualifiers and it will happen again (I hope!).

'm having a project to finalize. I swear I can't focus, my mind is distracted due to last night's performance. For a true Argentine fan it is painful, losing with pride is way easier to absorb than winning in shame!

I still have hope, but the next match can't prove anything, since it's against Iran!

I support Sabella, but he isn't a genius, he's too conservative in a risky way and that doesn't make him smart at all!

Get your balls together Sabella, you have a gifted group, what would you do if you coached Honduras, you would've called the fans down to defend with your players!

Screw all the European leagues and clubs, if a player doesn't put his heart for Argentina and plays his best under the flag of the blue and white, he worths nothing to me!

Things will get better for sure and against Iran, a result of less than 4-0 is unaccepted at all!

One TV commentator said: this is painful to watch. How can such talented players play so bad?

It was indeed frustrating to watch until the second goal.

IMHO, only Gago deserves a positive score.

@AbnormalOne : "* *Messi scored:Every match Messi didn't score is gonna make Messi more tensed. So no more call for Messi to score in a WC.His pre-scoring play made me disappointed.Who ever you are (whether you are Messi or Maradona or Pope) you need to earn your place. Tell him to run. (6)"

Exactly

I dont want to blame maxi , sabella put him in a wrong position. he should be a super sub for our attacking line.

I'm happy with the result.why???
*Solid display from Romero.Come on guys take out that prejudice. That goal was defense fault,I have seen the same 'through the legs' finish a thousand times,If you really think that was a blunder, need reality check.(7)
*Rojo had a good game.If that Rabona was done by Lahm,Alves or Alba the whole mundo will be moaning how we lack skilled defenders. He was full of energy and provided decent width and offensive instinct whenever given chance(A Mascherano off day meant little business though) (7)
*Campagnaro was not bad.He was substituted only for tactical variation.I prefer him as the second CB backup Basanta being the first (6)
*Fede disappointed.A whole good game wasted by lack of sharpness and pace at a single second.Need to be more cautious. (6)
*Garray was solid but nothing flashy(may be due to good positioning).Anyway need to be more commanding to Fede and Rojo. (7)
*Zabaleta was athletic and covered a lot of ground. But many attacks came through his flank. (6)
*Mascherano was uncharacteristically off today. Many misplaced passes and bad tackles.Need to improve if we want to get near the trophy. (6)
*Maxi was my Flop of the match. Two hopeful long rangers, that's it. (4)
*May be long stressful season have made a bad impact on Angel. Not his usual self other than two rebona kicks. (5)
* *Messi scored:Every match Messi didn't score is gonna make Messi more tensed. So no more call for Messi to score in a WC.His pre-scoring play made me disappointed.Who ever you are (whether you are Messi or Maradona or Pope) you need to earn your place. Tell him to run. (6)
*Kun, what I expected is not this. That of target shot was so bad considering his world-class finishing. (5)
*Gago: My man of the match. You may disagree but after his introduction the play changed dramatically. He was always willing to pass and receive the ball. His constant quest for possession made space for others.Wonder Barca are yet to find the Xavi replacement.A JOY to watch (8)
*Higuaine was ok today comparing to Kun.But lacks match fitness and sharpness (6)
*Biglia rarely touched the ball so no judgement.Though he gave positional confidence. (6)

All the signs for an early exit were present:
- coach who lacks confidence. Several hours before kick-off he still had not mind up his mind. Sabella lack of confidence translates to the team

- shaky keeper. Romero punches balls he should catch and does not breed confidence for defenders

- Messi bringing his Barca form of late to the WC. One brilliant action but otherwise a synonym for loss of posession

- Di Maria was best player of CL final. He completely lost it.

- System with 5 defenders does not work. Same story as 2010. Attackers do not defend, midfield is easily outnumbered.

However, we only can get better. We need a 5 goal win over Iran to boot confidence.
