To everyone's surprise, Sabella started Argentina's 2014 World Cup campaign with a 5-3-2 formation instead of the expected and more tested 4-3-3 that was so successful in the CONMEBOL qualifying campaign.
It meant that Higuain was kept on the bench and Hugo Campagnaro was introduced as an extra CB alongside Federico Fernandez and Ezequiel Garay, with Zabaleta and Rojo deployed on opposite flanks. Gago was also initially rested and Maxi Rodriguez replaced him as Mascherano's partner in midfield.
However, after being gifted an own goal, Sabella's cautious attempt didnt go too well in the first half and so he reintroduced Higuain and Gago directly after the break in place of Campagnaro and Maxi, reverting back to the original 4-3-3 formation.
Argentina played much better in the second half going forward, though it was evident the players were over anxius, nervous and not firing on all cylinders. Messi finally got on the scoresheet again for the first time since 2006 to make it 2-0 for the Albiceleste. However towards the end of the game, in the last 10 minutes, Bosnia got a deserved consolation goal.
Seeing that Argentina were at risk of losing the lead, Sabella quickly brought on Lucas Biglia in place of Aguero to add more defensive power and secure the win.
