Messi Scores & Three Points in the Bag
Just like in previous World Cups, that feeling of anxiety and nervous mixed with excitement just doesn’t get old. It’s a feeling that I think we all want relive when every Argentina’s opening fixture arrives in every four years.
And it got a little intense when the team walk out to the field to a rousing reception in what hardly couldn’t have been the Maracana as it was more like watching the game in the Monumental.

We hardly agreed on the formation opted by Alejandro SABELLA prior before kickoff but all those difference was put aside the moment the referee blew the whistle for kick off. Now all we want is to see that opening goal from Argentina.

We didn’t had to wait too long for that moment as early in the 3rd minute, a free kick from Lionel MESSI found Marcos ROJO whose header went straight to Sead KOLASINAC  turned home into his own net to give Argentina the lead.
For the most part in the first half, it wasn’t a good one as Bosnia did looked like were getting back into the game & the prospect of them getting an equalizer wasn’t impossible.
SABELLA needed to make a quick fix for the second half and did just that by bringing in Gonzalo HIGUAIN and Fernando GAGO for Maxi RODRIGUEZ and Hugo CAMPARGNO respectively; thus switching to a familiar 4-3-3 formation.
Then came the moment the world has been waiting for in this World Cup.
Receiving the ball from HIGUAIN, he ran from right to left; with a clear sight at goal after two Bosnian defenders whom were supposed to follow him ended colliding with each other and then….BOOOOM!!!!
MESSI finally lifting the burden that has always haunted him since scoring against Serbia back in 2006 by striking a perfect shot that double Argentina’s lead, of course with a little help from the post.
Of course, you would have thought that would sum up the night but that wasn’t the case as Vedad IBISEVIC cut back the deficit to one goal in the 85th minute.
Lucas BIGLIA was brought shortly after that for Kun AGUERO to add some defensive power as Argentina hold on to ensure the night would end with a win.
The best game for us? Maybe not but nevertheless there were two things that we’ve accomplish and that is MESSI finally scoring in the World Cup and most importantly we got the 3 points.

Just remember 2006 .. We got a tough win against Ivory Costa, but then we based Serbia with 6-0 .. And this is exactly what will happen next game against Iran.

the whole team looked bad in the first half apart from maybe the defense but it was due more to the formation and the bosnian teams tactics, i think this is first game all the players will have been nervous, don't judge them too harshly, am sure in the next match we will see an improvement.

5-3-2 is certainly NOT the system we should be playing with. We don't have the right players for that. It should be either 4-4-2 or 4-3-3 with Messi having every chance to penetrate the opposition defense. He is our best hope for winning this world cup. I am thoroughly disappointed with DiMaria & Kun so far. Maxi was NOt so good either. It's high time we should look to try out Perez, Ricky & Lavezzi to find the best combination before the knock-outs. We are lucky to have couple of comparatively easier matches coming up! Lets hope we improve & can find the net more often.

messis dribbling ability has notig to do with a formation A NATERAL ABITY TO DRIBBLE A BALL HAS SWEET NOTHING TO DO WITH FORMATIONS

he was edgy and scared and likely got a talking to at half time we shouldnt have conseededthat silly goal

maxi and dimaria were the let down in the 532 defence wise it was very very very solid and stuben to play against
1nil up so early coursed laziness

but we looked professional no one tried to look like world cup super heroes like so many other teams ad bosnia are a great side see them gient killing later in the competition

we looked defensively strong in a 1990 way first half and lethal has hell in the second

maxi was annouing tho and dimaria didnt deliver too many wrong passes

Posted on 6/16/2014 at 9:27 AM
hey, if we could play a game like we did and still pull out a good win, that's scary. because imagine what would have happened to Bosnia had Argentina played well throughout the whole game. on to the next one

he needs ro switch to 4-3-3

and then if any of di maria or ageuro are poor, brin gon lavezzi or ricky

if gago is low, then perez can come on

Posted on 6/16/2014 at 6:12 AM
sabella nearly threw this game, the 5-3-2 system with messi and aguero upfront does not work well, messi had a challege taking on players, at least if we were to play this system have a player like higuain who will be in the box all the time...after his introduction i just knew we we are now going to play....we were not bad, bosnia were very solid in marking this kind of system with sure next game we will remind the world what attackin football looks like

Posted on 6/16/2014 at 5:52 AM
@BA2LA, Fernandez was the better defender yesterday along with Rojo. He always performs. He was concentrating on Dzeko and that is the reason we think Dzeko is a flop yesterday. Just watch Bosnia's next two game and you will come to know how good Dzeko is..! When leading 2-0 players some time will be relaxed...that lead to the goal..nothing else.

The Thinker
Posted on 6/16/2014 at 5:47 AM
many opinions have emerged here.. but if understood the nature of the game then you will be bound to say that:

1)Sabella will NEVER use 5-3-2... it is a formation which requires a true enganche like Pastore or Riquelme and we have neither of them so sabella made a huge mistake there...

2) He realized his mistake in the 2nd half,, made two perfect subs and changed the formation to 4-3-3 and the result was that Messi has scored the goal of the tournament..

3)Some people are saying that argentina played a very bad game and they were lucky and all.. What would you say about Brazil??? Were they convincing against Croatia in front their own fans??? the opening game is always filled with Nerves so it was very natural that this team didn't give their 100% BECAUSE THEY DON'T NEED TO.. Italy and Spain won world cups playing terrible football in the opening game,, they grew game by game THEY LEARNED FROM THEIR MISTAKES and that is how you become champion... similarly,, this argentine team has a lot of room for improvements which is hugely positive sign... You are just an idiot if you think it the negative way...

4)Sabella will play 4-3-3 because it suits this team perfectly.. if we go ahead by 2 or 3 goals then he may switch to 4-2-3-1 or 4-4-2 but he will start every match 4-3-3 that is for sure... He said it in the interview that keeping Messi happy is the only way for this argentina team to shine and messi was very happy yesterday when he switched it 4-3-3.. Sabella was only experimenting and he found out the formation which he will never use...

5) Messi has scored the goal of the tournament.. 8 years later,, he breathed a heavy sigh of relief.. It is a symbolic sign which shows that now messi will top gear in the remaining games of the WC.. This WC will be his MAGNUM OPUS..

7) It was an absolute joy to see thousands of Argentine supporters in Maracana...I hope the number stays the same when we meet Brazil in a Legendary Final...

The team is better in a 4-3-3 but is soooooooo unbalanced with only 7 defending at times! We need to excepted the fact that we can score with anyone but we will also be scored on be anyone!

I question Fernandez's defense instincts. He was the weakness in our defense, giving up the goal and allowing severals running against his defensive support. Romero as well was hesitating in goal. A concern for later on in the tournament.

A lot of improvements need to be done. The team really made me nervous last night.

0 wasn't just the team on nerves, me too watching the game on tv, not even the early goal eased it. It was an opener so we did great winning it.

My takes from the match:
1. We are better served with a 4-3-3/4-4-2 with Gago/Enzo alongside Masche, i believe i wasn't the only one shocked at the deployment of Maxi in the box-to-box central role, he was hardly confident nor penetrative. He made messi have to fetch the ball from deep and run at multitudes of defenders.
2.Messi operates best close to the 18-yard, so play should be centered on delivering the ball right to him. The boy has become of age.
3. Macos Rojo put in a solid game but we must have a plan B. I suggest deploying Zabaleta as an inverted leftback and Hugo as a right back/ Basanta as a left back if Rojo is not yet comfortable by the knockout stage.
4.Angel Di maria has got a tremendous work rate, what a gem. Tireless runner and worker.
5.Higuain is central to our attacking play, it was well evident when he came on, i hope he gets full match fitness and goals.
6. This business of booing messi or any of our players must stop, it helps no one. Thank God messi proved them wrong.
7.Romero impressed me with the save from the corner, he has it in him, he just needs more confidence and shielding. I would like to see him becoming more commanding in the box and gather corners/free kicks in high pressure set pieces.
8.Federico fernandez was solid. No concerns to me about our defence.

All in all, Bosnia were no push overs. It wasnt just about our nerves and pressure, they were well drilled, well organised and disciplined, arguably the second best side in the group. The maracana is so immense, I hope come July 13th we return there and lift the cup. Vamos Albiceleste!!!!!!!!

Honest feedback from coach and messi

"Messi said: "It's important that we started off on the right foot with the three points, but we do have things we must improve. It's not easy with all the anxiety and the nerves, but the important thing is the result. We had a great second half. We had the ball much more, created several opportunities and that's what we have to continue to do."

Argentina coach Alejandro Sabella only awarded his team a mark of 6 out 10 and said his half-time changes to provide more support to Messi had been crucial. Sabella said: "On balance I would give it a 6. We need to improve and part of that is in my hands - it is up to me.

"The changes at half-time just produced this improvement. They were playing better together and there was more support around Messi. Once Messi received the ball there was better follow-up and better support. I think that, whatever happens in this World Cup, he is among the best players in the history of football."

Messi himself acknowledged the changes from five in defence to a 4-3-3 formation made it much easier for him and fellow striker Sergio Aguero. He said: "As strikers, we prefer that system as it gives us more attacking opportunities and if we don't use that system we suffer a bit.

"I was often on my own and so was Kun [Aguero] and it was very difficult, so there are things to be improved on."
Sabella confirmed that he had taken Aguero off as he had seemed tired rather than for injury reasons, even though the Manchester City frontman had appeared to be limping.

what i saw positive in yesterday's game is the two or three counter attacks by messi and maria even though they ended up as nothing. once messi reached the bosnian box from the argentine box within the blink of an eye. no other team, say holland, germany or any other team, has such a fast counter attacking players as we have. enzo perez will be a nice addition to this.

Posted on 6/16/2014 at 2:24 AM
the players whom i never like to see in the first eleven or even as substitutes are maxi, and lavezzi. i think if enzo and gago are brought in the first eleven, ours is the deadliest attacking team and the most balanced also. but i think sabella would always prefer ricky over enzo perez.

Posted on 6/16/2014 at 2:23 AM
Zaba, fede, garay, rojo.
Ricky, gago, masche, di maria.
Messi, aguero/higuain.

Posted on 6/16/2014 at 2:18 AM
Defence is not at all a concern for me now... Rojo is very skill full n more importantly confident n big hearted, need to devolop some composure datz all... Romero is not de best, but is giving 100%...
But mid is de worse... We had a mid that can compete to any in de world but is not using them... There was no pressure on bosnian players high up de pitch yesterday, only masche was der...
And it is natural de possession will concentrate on where de most players lie, we had 5 dfndrs yesterday n datz y had most possession der... For an ideal game most of de possession should concentrate at mid, so we need a more thick mid...
Masche+gago+2 attacking mids against dfnsv teams n masche+perez/biglia+attacking mids against tuff opponents will b perfect imo...

Posted on 6/16/2014 at 2:18 AM
@gabo, The Hand of God, and Pradi,
I liked your comments and I too think the same.
The problem with our team is, as Pradi mentioned, sabella is oscillating between these two extreme formations. The 3-5-2 is extremely defensive and 4-3-3 is blind attacking when played with three forwards. Sabella can play a 4-2-3-1 which will be
zabaleta- - - - - FF- - - - - garay- - - - - roho/or any other player
- - - - -- - -Gago - - - - - - - - - Masche- - -
- - - - - Messi - - - - - - - Perez - - - - - -Maria
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - kun/hig - - - - - -

New to the site but long time Argentina fan. Guys, let's not get overworked or too worried. Sabella started with a 5-3-2 only because he didnt want pipita or gago to play the full 90 due to their slight injury problems. Next game they will definitely start and we will pay our favoured 4-3-3. Also, he started with the 5-3-2 because since we were missing gago in the middle, he understood maxi isn't as good defensively as gago so he threw in an extra defender. I would have preferred enzo rather than maxi as biglia was also slightly hurt and Alvarez is more attacking. This game was the opener and as such, nerves were high and you could tell from the sloppy passes and rushed play. That goal by messi was pure magic, not only his incredible finishing but the build up play between him and higuain. It was beautiful and brought tears to my eyes. The goal by bosnia was frustrating because the defense played so well all game they deserved a clean sheet. Fede got beat by the pass because I think it was zaba who slid for the ball but missed and then the player slotted the pass in behind Fede and the player had his back so he couldn't catch him. I don't think fede expected zaba not to win that ball but romery came out cheaply. The Bosnian player had no angle all Romero had to do was cover the space between his legs. The team is perfectly balanced I just really wish they would have brought caballero because he would be what kaylor navas or Claudio bravo are to their respective teams, a solid keeper who can save them at the back consistently and one who they have complete trust in. I'm scared anytime a cross foes in or a shot gets through. Romero did amazingly to keep out that one header tho, and I hope he proves us all wrong and shows why sabella has faith in him time and time again. Vamos Argentina!!

Posted on 6/16/2014 at 1:53 AM
in next matches, Sabella should make plan with 4:3:3 & use Higuin instead of maxi from the first of the game.

Posted on 6/16/2014 at 1:50 AM
It's really excellent that Messy has scored and also kept vital role to win the game. In next game, Messi will do better amd score more........

Posted on 6/16/2014 at 1:41 AM
Job Done.

Messi finally happy after scoring the goal , must needed for us.

But we have to improve a lot for proceeding further , i am sure sabella will fix those.

Posted on 6/16/2014 at 1:35 AM
The two main formations should be 4-4-2 or 4-3-3. Maybe 4-4-1-1.

Posted on 6/16/2014 at 1:33 AM
My views regarding game are was a very shaky start by Argentina despite having played against Bosnia recently in friendly. we seem to have no idea about the opponent.
2. We were giving far more respect to opponent by playing 5-3-2 although it was assumed to be 3-5-2 which was never a case in 1st half. it was like we were playing against superior opponent.
3. There was no support to messi in 1st half. He tried to take on 2-3 players on his own but never succeeded and after that he was just a spectator in remaining of 1st half.
4. When we were playing 5-3-2 it should have been dimaria and maxi playing LCM and RCM but it was never a case again they were too wide near touchline and it was masche on his own at center of midfield and created a lot of space in center of midfield
5. for me defence looked solid despite that goal we conceded it was really out of nothing. having played very good game Romero must be frustrated to concede in that manner from tight angle (which we can clearly see in his face )
6. Good note is Sabella has plan B if his plan A do esn't work. I was more than happy to see his changes at half time which shows he has very good technical awareness.
7. individually if player are analysed then our back looked solid only worrying thing in defense is we seriously lack pace. we can have look how fredico was outpaced in the buildup to the goal we conceded, mashe had average game given his high standard. dimaria had good game in terms of taking on defenders and working hard in midfield but his final pass disappointed me, with gago in midfield messi was more comfortable upfront with higuain. Aguero and maxi was nowhere seen in the game. messi had poor 1st half but his goal gave him confidence which was really outstanding and timing of the goal was superb as we were trying to dictate game it brought whole lot of confidence in whole team.
8. did anyone noticed when we were having 2-0 lead and our team were defending;it was 4-3-0 formation, no any front three were seen in picture there was a huge gap between midfield and front3. atleast they should trackdown to centerline when our team is defending.
conclusion- our team look shaky. yes we were lucky to have 1-0 lead maybe some can argue we were lucky even to win the match. we have different plan to implement if one doesn't work. our best asset is our attack we need to focus on that rather than sitting behind waiting for chances. good note is messi seems really charged up look at his expression when he scored that goal and it will bring a lot of confidence to him and that is very good for whole team. I am desperately hoping to see improve performance next time. Vamos Argentina

Posted on 6/16/2014 at 1:32 AM
Tony montana shit man i hope you dont teach! Fernandez did great today. Shoot our backline was good today. Romero didnt intervene as much. There are a lot of positives here! Everyone should be happy! 5-3-2 was used because sabella over estimated bosnia. When sabella switched to 4-3-3, we had way more control! 5-3-2 should still be used to close out games.

Posted on 6/16/2014 at 1:24 AM
Bosnia reminds me as a Croatia of 98' . Federico looks rock solid for me and wonder why big guns of europe not going after him.........

Posted on 6/16/2014 at 1:24 AM
Media concerns are mostly about how Argentina can go all way in this tournament with the talents they possess but their Management tactics have been a burden every time, and this could be same factor that stop the team from claiming the title.

Sabella: D due to him not starting in a 4-3-3 formation....a formation that Argentina has thrived in and has not lost in 2 and 1/2 years....stick with it and dictate the game as we are Argentina! at least he adjusted at the half.

Fernandez: C- damn not only i he slow but he takes bad angles throughout the game not knowing where his help is and to lead his attacker towards the support!!

Maxi: C- should not have started even in a 5-3-2 in front of Gago...MAxi was
stagnant the was the sum of the midfield in the first movement just individual play...go off the bench in 70th minute...

Romero:C+ had a good save against #16 header off the corner in first half but was LATE couple times coming out to catch crosses and a 1st half through ball that he ended up punching out......the goal was horrible though...the angle was nearly impossible to score if Sergio just covered his 9hole!! we are stuck his romero for 6 more games....(fingers crossed)

FAB 4: B.... even though Messi was all alone in the midfield in the 1st half (because sabella gave too much respect to bosnia) his 2nd half was magical including a goal to remember for this WC2014. They connected well with each other in the 2nd half. The FAB4 should have produced another goal with a couple of good build ups only to be spoiled by a bad through pass by Messi/DiMaria or empty cross by DiMaria.....Higuains movement made a big difference in space for Messi and Agüero could have finished better on a couple occasions but also connected well with Lionel.... I am licking my chops for the Iran game Saturday now that our formation is now set at 4-3-3...even though we are vulnerable at the back with that formation....

THE PHILOSOPHY : Argentina's 4-3-3 formation offers a counter attack of our FAB4 against 6 of the opponents defenders; which in turn allows the opponent to counter against our defending 7 ...the thought is we will score more times with Messi, Higuain, Aguero and DiMaria counter attacking against 6 than the opponents will with the remaining 5 attacking against our defensive seating 7.... risky but efficient for we are undefeated since October 11, 2011 against Venezuela...

Posted on 6/16/2014 at 1:09 AM
1) The media praised Sabella's defensive side and the guard he placed named Mascherano.
2) Rojo was good not just with defending but with his spirit especially when Messi scored.
3) Sabellla: Lack of confidence:
A)celebrating own goal as it was a decisive real goal when the game has just started, the celebration itself showed some sort of lacking confidence. Bosnia is still just an enthusiastic raw team, this is not Italy or Brazil.
B)you play 5-3-2 when attack is your strength shows a pure lack of confidence. World cup game is not for experimenting, this is not a training session nor a friendly game. The moment of the truth.
C) looking into old books Maradona used like Maxi, Di Maria, Mascherano in midfield shows also lack of confidence and poor gut.
4) Messi's goal was the best so far in this tournament. Higuain shouldn't have been taken to Brazil, he won't be fit in time. Icardi is needed so bad as a young healthy flair. Argentina will never take it safe can be your venom in the WC. Bad idea to take all old forward whom injuries take longer time to heal: Higuain, Palacio, etc....

@pradi agree with you 4-4-2 is best against top teams we will not lose our attacking and we will be solid in defense very good balance, Ricky or enzo Perez in place of aguero will do it

Posted on 6/16/2014 at 12:55 AM
about the pace of the game:

it was 90% humidity. at that point you're breathing water, not air.

the players tired because they weren't getting enough oxygen.

it's no surprise that the jungle teams, i.e. brazil, costa rica, colombia, played a faster paced game to the end.

also to note, the netherlands and spain were playing at around 60% humidity, way below the average for that area.

it's actually better to play in the rain, than humid air.

in about 2 weeks the players should be climatized and at 3 weeks at peak performance, if not sooner.

on the 5-3-2, it was ridiculous, both teams parked the bus and the midfield was empty.

messi and aguero were alone, playing in a different game.

if sabella wants to play the 5-3-2, he should have taken players that thrive in that formation, like cambiasso.

this game was the type of game a player like cambiasso excels in.

he should have also accounted for the conditions.

the 2006 team would have been a perfect team for this world cup.

romero is romero. he will either win the game for you or lose it for you.

you don't play 5-3-2 against a team like bosnia, when they've training against the formation all year, parked the bus and are of little offensive threat.

argentina is an attacking team and dare you to score more goals than them.

and to play the 5 defenders in a row is also a tactical mistake.

they should be staggered in 2-3 or a 3-2, to create a maze for the opponents to navigate, instead of lined up, where they can pick a hole with a thru ball on the ground or in the air over them.

I read a blog at espn written by brazilian blogger called duarte, I am surprised the hatred that guy has for messi, he dismissed messi performance today and praised neymar performance in the opener, a fool like that is allowed to write at espn , we have to remember one thing argentina have haters in the media , the pro England media and also brazilians do hate our beloved team, our defense was good today but all the media are talking like it was the worst, we can only silence them with World Cup victory they always find excuses to hate our team , we will silence them

Things to note: 1. Argentina's best formation is 4-3-3.
2. NEVER start Maxi especially in midfield
3. If we gonna play a 5-3-2 which we are more solid in defending. Start Gago or if he's injured Enzo should be the next option as he's somewhat similar offensively to Gago and leave Messi and Higuain up top so a midfield of Masch, Gago/Enzo and Di Maria/Ricky just as a plan B...
4. Defence was solid and I think Rojo did well give the guy a break.........

We will grow in confidence and hopefully the guys will step it up next match and show more urgency because that was lacking in the entire match!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

VIVA Argentina

The prblm is sabella is going for de two extremes, not falling in de middle....
4-3-3 is inbalnced-too open game n 5-3-2 also-too defensive....
I feel 3 strikers upfront is causing confusion between them whom to go for goal because of so many options and i feel 2 at a time is de best option....
Adding an attacking mid who can defend also is de best option, otherwise ball will stuck at our own half n lack midfield creation...
It nvr looking comfortable when messi dropping back n collecting ball, always about 3 r around him n chances f dispossession from crucial situations are high....
I wanna see messi as striker, not even as#10, coz he is not fluent in dat role. When ricky or di maria or gago looking for a through ball they are easily makilng decisions but messi is taking too much time for decision making and is getting dispossessed...
I think adding ricky in mid and using di maria n ricky as 3rd n 4th strikers in counter eill b a good option n also provide continous service to forwards fro mid... .

Also, can anyone please calm me down by explaining how that tackle with crushing cleats from behind on Messi's ankle did not even get a card (I thought it would be red; that's how careers are ended). What's going on? How does B&H get away with this? Wish I was on that field!

I don't know why no one has mentioned the snail's pace at which Fredrico Fernandes allowed the Bosnian to get goal side of him from behind to win the ball that finally beat Romero. As a professional soccer coach, I have to admit that Romero should have played the angle better & not panicked to leave his zonal coverage of the net (reminded me if the 2 times vs Germany in 2010 when he made the same mistake). However, he single handedly saved us in the 1st half from the header off the corner that we had conceeded. I think Fredrico is our best choice in that position but he has also messed up really badly previously versus Bolivia (in Bolivia) which I had forgiven to low oxygen to the brain. But it happened again today....WE CAN'T AFFORD TO REPEAT THESE MISTAKES!
Maxi twice failed to track his runner and allowed 2 scoring chances in the group stage vs Greece in the previous World Cup & here be was starting deep in Midfield again. Sabella did great to replace him; he will not be reliable to defend. Thank God for Leo! For all those who doubt his loyalty to AFA, just look at his face when he scored; no one has ever seen more passion in the eyes that were tearing up (not ever like that when he scores for Barcelona). Rojo needs to be replaced, any suggestions? He gave up a corner kick because be had the touch of a Rhino. We are the deadliest team on planet Earth & we can't keep losing world cups due to the same repeated mistakes from the same players! If they aren't held responsible for their actions I'm going to have to go to a mad house! Please help, love to hear all of my AFA hearts. I can't sleep because I can't believe what happened today, we were so lucky!

Gago is a joy to watch. Man ive never seen a midfielder pass and immediately moves without the ball to get open again. Pure football IQ

What an important game for us just for wake up call. The game was all of full pre game prediction by around the world. Here's my thought about the game:

1. Did Argentine defense shown strength?
Ans: Yes, they did. They played as unit.

2. Did Argentine defense showed vulnerability / Lousy at back?
Ans: Yes, they did. During last 10 minutes of the game Argentine defender looked lousy and it cost that unwanted goal.

3. Did Romero showed positivity as a goalkeeper?
Ans: Yes, he did. He game some positive impression.

4. Did Romero looked shaky?
Ans: Yes, he did look shaky just before he concede the goal. But most of the blame should take Argentine defense for that goal.

5. Did Argentine midfielder play well?
Ans: No they didn't. This was one of the non performance night from most of the Argentine Offensive players.

6. Did our fantastic player clicked?
Ans: No, they were full 90 minutes flop

7. Did Messi Play well?
Ans: Not before he scored.

8. Did 5-3-2 worked?
Ans: It didn't work actually and our strength is offense and we should play more offensive formation.

9. Do we need more cohesion within the team?
Ans: We need more mobility, flexibility and accuracy within our game

10. What should we expect from sabella's team against Iran?
Ans: Wake Up !!! Boys. Party is over and come to the reality. we need to concentrate more of our game and we can't loose our concentration. We need to be more accurate on passing the ball, we need to be more fast and pacy and we have to defend as a unit and attack as a unit.

Players' Rating :

1. Romero : 7 (He saved an powerful header)

2. Campaginaro : 6

3. Garay : 7

4. Fernandez : 6

5. Rojo : 6

6. Zabaletta : 6.5

7. Mascherano : 5

8. Maxi : 5

9. Di Maria : 5

10. Aguero : 4

11. Messi : 5 (before score); 7 (after score)

12. Higuain : 6

13. Gago : 5.5

14. Bigli : N/A

Let me also take this opportunity to say one thing: it's never a good sign if a coach makes mistakes so simple even the fans can see it! it wasn't a good sign when Pekerman excluded Zanetti in 06 (it was really a no brainer!) and boy we paid for it!

this is what I had to say about the formation before the game (see my comment in the previous post):

"With this line up, I can see a 0-0 first half and then he'll have to bring in Higuain/Alvarez/Lavezzi (depending on fitness) and switch to 4-3-3."

I was almost right except that we scored accidentally in the first half. I even predicted a 2-1 result (see el principle's comment in the previous post). It was all obvious to me that Messi cannot perform in a 5-3-2 formation, and there is only so much we can do in one half. To the people who called me a newcomer and not a true fan: sometimes being a fan is about knowing your team, knowing what they can do, and knowing what they cannot! so please show more respect for your fellow supporters.

Now I'm going to beg Sabella to go with what we do best: attack! Keep Messi happy and we'll be all happy! a 5-3-2 won't do. We just don't have the midfield creativity needed to play that formation (ironic, given that one of the more creative midfielder we had is watching from home)

And in case Sabella's planning to make similar mistakes in the next stages, I suggest that AFA fires him and hires me for 2k/month! I'll be much cheaper and can promise to deliver same service!

8 years is a long time!all those frustration pouring out from messi after dat goal !
But whatever u guys says ? The 1 person which the team need today is
His composure, his gallop (like the way he stride around the field)his
understanding with leo(always less than 10feet away)&u can always trust
Fernando to put a tackle in.
Today,is a bit of pain but if we win by 2 or 3 nil, dats where the problem(s)
'll start?
The world cup is a long tournament(1month long)u juzz cannot come on with
all guns blazing, than maintain throughout.u gonna warm it up 1st&peak
later.when u reach the knock out stage, there's NO 2nd chance!
Anyway ,anybody noes if sabella 've the team practicing on penalty kick?
It's a dreadful though but it 'll come sooner or later?????

We can play 4-3-3 untill quarterfinal after that 4-4-2 will be best option with one more midfielder in place of aguero enzo Perez or Ricky will fit the bill

@pablo.d: I'm glad for Manu too. He truly deserved it.

Let's hope Messi gets what he deserves too. For that to happen, we need to play him where he likes. He's more likely to find that in 4-3-3 than 5-3-2 (or 3-5-2). Everyone has been praising Sabella for getting the most our of Messi! And if he wants to keep that reputation, he cannot play 5-3-2. And of course, he's gonna need his midfield to do a lot better than this!

I agree with Leandro.

Sabella played it safe. The 5-3-2/3-5-2 is not Messi's bread and butter formation as far as creativity in concern. Sabella probably did not want Higuain and Gago to play a full 90 minutes.

The 4-3-3 formation is our most deadliest attack, but, we are going to concede goals with this formation. Get ready for a roller coaster WC with the 4-3-3, let's see who scores more.

Gago also played great, to me, player of the match. The good thing Sabella adjusted, he is no fool, or, that was his plan all along, to conserve Higuain and Gago. All of our players should be healthier as the WC continuous day by day, and week by week.

The second half was a lot better than the first. With that being said, we have momentum in game 2. It's a step by step process, like Kidult also mention and El Pipita, it's a short tournament, but, it's like a race as well, with pace, adjustments, player evaluation's on defense, health, formations, subs, etc...

Sabella also made another good sub by brigging in Biglia at the end of the game. I felt that DiMaria did get tired as well.

The FAB 4 have to help out on defense, it's a must. Besides DiMaria, Aguero and Higuain need to help out. I know we were tired, but we almost let Bosnia level us.

I think, we are going to play a lot better as the WC continuous. We only have more time to gel ,get healthier and fitness.

Vamos Argentina!

Regardless of the formation, this was a below average performance for our team. We committed many turnovers, lost most 50-50 balls, and our passing was very poor in midfield.

It is an opener so I'm not too concerned about performance as long as we pick up maximum points and Messi builds more confidence for the knock-out stage, where he can really make the difference.

We have to get better this is an unacceptable performance by a team expected to win the title! The defense carries a lot pf weight and were pressured for 90 mins. That cant be allowed by the experienced midfield. Maxi has no reason being with this side instead pf playing him play Perez.

It's not our best game but it was one of the best opening in WC for Albiceleste. We have won against the tough team in the group stage. Messi scored and we gain three points, However, Sabella still have to do a lot of homework and learn from this game. We were lucky to had an OG by B&H in the earlier minutes due to the genius of Messsi.

Our best formation is 4-3-3 resemble with 5-3-2 with and without the ball, Look at the difference when Gago and Higuain join the start XI, we can dominate the pitch.

Sabella readiness and alertness to change the formation and subs players that was not in their best form.

Defense was solid, still GK Romero mistake can't be repeated.

WC is a tournament, better we grow and develop a long than to scoring a lot just in a group stage.

Sabella's subs and tactical changes did well and works

Di Maria exploration and sharpness from the middle trying to copy from his club performance still have to be accurate as sometimes he missed the passed

Balance and harmony of the team are excellent; especially the discipline of defense players.

Gifted with the best player in the World, Albiceleste can speak louder this time

This was not the start we were hoping for. Surely, we don't know how to play 5-3-2. At least, we don't know how to play it like a world champion. And it seems that Sabella does not trust his own 4-3-3, even against Bosnia let alone against better teams. I cannot blame him though, given what happened today. Overall, you can only say that Sabella does not still know what he is doing!

Posted on 6/15/2014 at 10:56 PM
We all have been waiting for the moment Messi scores a world cup goal since 2006...8 years...It must be a gigantic relief for Messi himself after all the pressure he has had and I am sure he is able to improve as the tournament progresses.

Guys, sit tight and get ready to witness the greatest player on earth showing his magic...I am very sure of this.

Posted on 6/15/2014 at 10:56 PM
I think when you start with a 5-3-2 it really puts your team in a defensive and a little more conservative mind set.. And that's how the 1st half was. Sabella really seems to have a great deal of confidence in his team and their ability to switch it on (its evident in how he resurrected Messis international career) therefore he thinks/knows that going from 5-3-2 to 4-3-3 will just automatically payoff and it did in their tempo and control. It worked with Bosnia but would it when we play Belgium or Portugal in the quarters. I'm a "come out with all guns blazing" kinda thinker.. But then again, I'm not coaching the Argentinian national team he is and he's done something or a lot to get to to where he's at. Thank God for Messi and good night

Its all about how to fix your formation and subs...Sabella may be wrong with the starting line up...But showed we can defend like that if needed to..But the good news is he knows how to fix it. Anyone can be wrong but if u can correct urself quickly like that...Its all good. Now Bosnia is not Germany but they are a strong attacking team...Argentina defense held decently today...Lets grow into the match rather than Burst into it then pop.

I said it before the game kicked off, ill say I again, I prefer maxi to b brought in for 2nd half.. It works better that way.. All Bosnias plays clearly came in from rojo's side, which is my point exactly, he didn't play too bad in offense, but the kid sucks at defense..
Proof that gago and higuain need to start with messi, we weren't able to hold possession of the ball in midfield.. And again messi was trying to do it al on his own.. Di Maria and maxi estaba. Apagados .. Bosnias goal was too easy, our defense gives the apponents way too much space to create chances, if it wasn't for masche it would've been worse.
Clearly we work better with a 4-3-3 formation, with pipita and gago on the field.. I tip my hat for the bosnians, in my opinion the had more possession of the ball for most of the game..
U can totally tell sabella was nervous, and knew he fucked up with that formation.. We gotta work on Smethin fast..
Thank god messi shined with that play.. So proud of him, VAMOS ARGENTINA CARAJO !!!!

this is good, this is good. not bad for a start. it's a long way to go.
i almost shed a tear seeing messi score that goal.

that's all i wanna say for now.

The problem was maxi in midfield with another player it would have been better, in knock out stages 4-4-2 will be the best option enzo Perez or Ricky in place of aguero , btw gago is necessary for the team probably the most important he is our pirlo

Team looked too relax.. and we still won easily. DiMaria was trying too hard.. as he tends to do. Gago had an instant impact as did Higuain. Sabella did everything right i feel. He started safe, rested hurt players and only brought in the full firepower when we needed it. Hope messis ankle does not swell up from that hard tackle he got. Romero did well in my book, unlucky that ball megged him.

Gago and higuain should start next match. I think the defense played very well. Romero played well last play I think could have done a little bit more on the Bosnian goal. Midfield was awful. Messi did his own plays. Kun was well defended by the bosnians. Overall a good game by the defense.

Posted on 6/15/2014 at 10:30 PM
Before the start of the tournament it would seems that our problem were defense, however based on what transpired today our defense hold up well against a good Bosnia team. The midfield is what am more concerned about, am just not getting the type of searching passes from midfield to our forward line.
For the next game we have to start with Gago and hope Di-Maria have a better game his game was really off today. Maxi was absent in the first half, with Maxi having such a poor game it bring back a lot of pressure on the team causing Argentina to play very deep in their side of the field.

Big up Messi, a very classical strike from the boss himself.

Posted on 6/15/2014 at 10:25 PM
i think 5-3-2 is a wrong formation. although defense look solid with that, in the midfield it was horrible. there was a lot of wrong pass. the team way very sloppy.
4-3-3 is lot better however with 2 defensive midfield i am not sure.

I don't think Sabella really made the wrong choice to start the game. I don't think anyone would believe Maxi and DiMaria would disappear for such long periods when someone needed to play possession in midfield. He had other options and went to them at halftime. Crisis averted, and all is well.
On this day in 2006, Lionel MESSI scored his first ever goal for the Argentina National Team. MESSI scored his first goal for Argentina on March 1, 2006 in a friendly match against Croatia. A match which ended 3-2 in Croatia's favor.
The media in Argentina has been reporting that the AFA has not paid Tata MARTINO or his coaching staff since October.
On this day in 2012, Lionel Messi scored his first ever hattrick for the Argentina National Team vs. Switzerland. February 29, 2012 marked the day Lionel MESSI scored his first hattrick for the National Team in a 3-1 win against Switzerland.
