The Team Has Arrived In Rio
The entire National Team departed from Belo Horizonte on a flight bound for Rio de Janeiro where they safely arrived at about 7.30 pm, in which they were greeted under tight security.

The team then headed straight to the Sheraton Hotel where they will be staying, escorted by a van with a dozen of Brazilian policemen.

Upon arrival, they were greeted by the adoring 300 Argentine fans that have been waiting for them (some of those fans apparently were also staying in the same hotel). Brazilian army was also at present as they needed to cordon off the lobby to allow the players and coaching staff to check in smoothly.

The first player to lead the way in the hotel was Maxi RODRIGUEZ and the last was non-other than Lionel MESSI. Apparently both MESSI and Javier MASCHERANO did return to salute those fans at present at the hotel.

Tomorrow afternoon the team is expected to head to the Estádio Maracanã and Alejandro SABELLA is expected to give a press conference at about 6.15pm local time.

@Haman, I agree man. You just cannot judge a team's performance simply from their first game in the WC because nerves play a big part. When you have quality players in a team, they have a great ability to dust themselves off and put in a stellar performance next game. I think Spain are going to destroy Chile in their next game.

From Argentina's perspective, I'm certainly not going to judge them on the Bosnia game because the expectation on us is huge, especially Messi. I just hope Messi doesn't put too much pressure on himself, considering the comparison to Deigo of 86 as both were the same age going into the WC.

I'm still holding my breath and not gonna judge from the first round!

Holland who humiliated Spain with 5-1 could loose against Chile and Spain could defeat Chile on the other hand!

What i mean is, we still can't jude, we gotta stay calm and wait for more surprises!

El pipita true, what a joke? It's the other way round. Ancelotti copied Sabella. Yeah but then again Sabella isn't a European coach, they won't give him the credit the due credit. I won't be surprised if I hear this from one the commentators when they see Fideo playing all round the place. I like it the more journalists get it wrong on Argentina coz they're helping us indirectly.

anybody have any idea about the starting 11 against bosnia???

are we going to see higuain finally??

i hope we just play with 433 and use basanta instead of rojo. and maybe andujar/orion as goalie.

i hope romero didn't do any silly error and being a clown as he have been called by some nuts here at mundo.

i wanna see a clean sheet win 4-0, or at least 4-1.

god bless argentina.

I'm having a severe headache from watching all the games. I thought that it was bad Falcao is not playing otherwise Colombia could be a favorite.

Weather has no effect on this tournament....European teams are still dangerous and as I said before it's not summer in Brazil. It won't be all S.American teams as some thought.....Netherlands needs a giant brave team to make their machine stops. Spain can still recharge again and come strong. Brazil will get a seat in the semi final since referees will do them a favor every now and then, rules of the host.

Lastly: Argentina should go for attack and not be afraid in the dying minutes before the opening game, play the fantastic four and get the damage....if Netherlands plays Spain with 3-4-3 then why not we use 3 attackers and play 4-3-3?

We are dreaming too advance. But we should only focus on Bosnia at the moment. We need to play well to defeat Bosnia and our full concentration should be on it, not who will play against us in quarter final, semi final and possible Final.

I believe against Bosnia, we have to use our current usual formation 5-3-2 and play with pace. If we can do it then we will win quiet handsomely.

Vamos Argentina

As long as Pirlo playing, i dont think Italy will use 4-4-2 AGAINST US. Pirlo cant defend much....They cannot leave 3 players without defending against us. And today they played just one striker and i think they will use the same formation against us.

@guled, It is not a problem for us how tight opposition defense is....we have best attackers...and best player in the world....we can score against any team. All we have to care is how good the opposition attack...England and Uruguay attackers can cause more trouble than Italy. They were not up to their level today..but they are dangerous..!

Italy really surprised me. They are known as a defensive team but so far they play like Spain of 2010. Short passing, ball possessions. Pirlo is the Xavi of 2010. After leading 2-1, they just leave 6 men in defense. Wow what a transformation.

@Kidult: It's not being cowardly. It's about avoiding unnecessary challenges. If Argentina were the defending champions, I would have embraced all kinds of competition and try to prove it wasn't a fluke 4 years back. But that's not the case. We are starved for almost 3 decades now. We need luck more than anything else.

I know we can beat teams like France and Germany. But they wouldn't be my priority opposition. I am happy to be called 'lucky finalists' than to lose a match and keep waiting another 4 years.

Thanks for the article el principe.
I have to say this part gave me pause:

"Sabella is planning to take a leaf out of Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti’s book in the way that he uses Di Maria’s pace to support the forward line, and his stamina and discipline to carry out midfield defensive duties"

Well that's a joke! Considering the fact that Sabella has used Angel in the central midfield role since the home game against Ecuador!
Journalists should learn to give credit where credit is due.

Argentina captain Lionel Messi will step out at the Maracana on Sunday knowing that he still needs to prove himself if he is to be truly considered as one of the greats of the game.

Despite a glittering career with Barcelona, Messi has yet to bring his club form to a World Cup and silence those who claim that he will never rank alongside the likes of Maradonna, Pele or Zidane until he does so.

In two previous World Cups, Messi has managed just one goal, and most Argentine football fans are sceptical about his contribution to the national team, claiming that he reserves his best displays for Barcelona. On Thursday night, Brazil’s golden boy Neymar lived up to expectations, scoring two and delivering a man-of-the-match performance in a 3-1 win over Croatia. Now it is over to Messi, as his team take on Bosnia-Herzegovina in their opening Group F game.

Neymar celebrates scoring his second goal against Croatia in the opening game of the World Cup 2014

“He is very relaxed and will handle all the expectations,” said team-mate Lucas Biglia before tonight’s match. “This is a different Messi you will see, not like at other World Cups. This is a team that will play to his strengths and make him comfortable so that he can make the difference.”

Argentina manager Alex Sabella is spoilt for choice when it comes to attack. A lethal front three of Messi, Sergio Aguero and Gonzalo Higuain are supported from midfield by Real Madrid’s Angel Di Maria. They are known as Los Cuatro Fantasticos, – the Fantastic Four. On paper at least, there is not another side in this World Cup that can boast of such a forward line.

Gonzalo Higuain Gonzalo Higuain

As Spain found out to their cost on Friday night, though, you need more than flair and firepower.

It is in defence and central midfield where Argentina’s weaknesses lie. The two first-choice centre-halves, Frederico Fernandez and the highly rated Ezequiel Garray, who came close to signing for Manchester United last summer, are not considered to be the quickest, while first-choice goalkeeper Sergio Romero made just three League appearances for Monaco last season.

In central midfield, there is not a single ball winner of Javier Mascherano’s quality in the Argentina squad, while Fernando Gago, who is likely to start alongside him, suffered a serious knee injury while playing for Boca Juniors, missing the last month of the Argentine football season and only just making the squad for Brazil.

In qualifying for this year’s tournament, Argentina’s 35 goals was the highest of all South American nations but they kept just four clean sheets in the 16 matches they played to get to Brazil.

Sabella has been honest enough to admit to his team’s deficiencies, telling the Argentine press before the World Cup: “Our way of playing means that we end up having an imbalance. Picking four players with attacking characteristics means that at times we suffer defensively. We are not a team who attack based on possession or order. We are an anarchic team, with very anarchic players.”

At the team’s Brazil training base in Belo Horizonte, Sabella has been focused on getting his team to master the two Bs – balance and basics, as he puts it.

In previous World Cups, he believes there was too much responsibility heaped on Messi’s shoulders and that the time has now come for the whole team to muck in so that the Argentina captain is allowed to express himself and have a greater influence on games.

While the eyes of the world and Argentina’s opponents will be on Messi, Champions’ League winner Di Maria could prove to be the player most pivotal to their chances of lifting a first World Cup since Mexico in 1986.

Sabella is planning to take a leaf out of Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti’s book in the way that he uses Di Maria’s pace to support the forward line, and his stamina and discipline to carry out midfield defensive duties.

Said Di Maria: “I will carry out the same role for Argentina as I do for Madrid. Under Ancellotti it took me time to get used to it but it has worked very well for us. It requires a lot of concentration and energy but it gives us the option of being able to hit teams on the break but at the same time not be tooexposed in important parts of the pitch.

“With Argentina I will be playing with some of the best strikers in the world and the best player in the world in Lionel Messi. But we cannot just sit back and expect him to do everything. All the team has a responsibility to carry out its roles and I think in previous World Cups we have not always done this.”

Heading into tonight’s game, the omens are certainly good for Messi. Since being appointed captain by Sabella in 2011 he has, at times, been inspirational for Argentina, scoring 10 goals in the 12 World Cup qualifiers he started. Before receiving the armband he had gone 16 competitive matches without scoring. La Pulga – “the flea” – as Messi is known, also appears more comfortable operating in a deeper role for Argentina than for Barcelona.

By his standards, Messi had a mediocre season for his club. While his 41 goals made him Barça’s all-time highest scorer, he was criticised for being ineffective in the matches that really mattered in La Liga and the Champions’ League. Ironically, Barça fans claimed this was because he was saving his best for Brazil. His Argentina team-mates and the team’s fans will be hoping they are proved right, and that this will be the World Cup when La Pulga finally delivers.

http://www.ole.com.ar/mundial/argentina/definido_0_1156684620.html

-Sabella has yet to know his starting 11 for tomorrow
-The players also don't know the starting 11
-Sabella now is UNSURE about the fantastic four. He said if he attacks with 4 players, that will make the team vulnerable defensively.
-Sabella does not like the tag "favorite"
-Sabella is asking the Lord to give him wisdom
-He tends to use 4-3-1-2 now instead of 4-3-3
-No good attack without good defense. We must be balanced.

It is super weird the latest interview of Sabella. Why now he suddenly has doubt on his fantastic four??

He must be worried. I hope he's making the right decision. As I said, to experiment in the World Cup is not the right timing. And it is our first game. Why not use the winning team?

Over confident like Scolari is not good, but just field the best team. That's all.

I don't know Maxi Lopez since I never joined worldcup blogs or something like that. However from what you guys said, the guy is an Argentine who really values "classic" Argentina tactic who plays with a dominant playmaker like in Maradona era. I appreciate that. I know many Argentines who are like that.

I know another Argentine who has very good knowledge of Argentina club futbol who always criticize our current Argentina national team just because the number of European based players are called way more than the domestic based. He compared it to 20 years ago + when Argentina called more domestic based players than the European based. He does not want to accept that the futbol has changed.

Well I respect that too.

That's one thing we need to have here. We are DIFFERENT. We have different point of view. That does not mean that they are smarter than us or us smarter than them. Treat the differences as a beauty of this forum instead of being arrogant here saying that everyone else is wrong and I am right.

I have had a lot of debates with Ziggy (15 years ago), Sebastian Garcia, Johny, Kidult (especially :p), Leandro, Jack etc, but I respect their opinion. If I disagree with something, I would just reply and tell them why. For example, Seba used to like Jose Sosa and always mocked Di Maria. I always replied that I disagree with that and told him why. That's all.

We love one team, what's the point of making us looking the smartest of the most superior one? We're just fans anyway. It's not like the smartest among us will be Argentina assistant coach or scouts or something.

Just be polite and enjoy the World Cup.

Arrival of Maxi Lopez means personal attack and insults if you say anything about players he likes.

The guy understands futbol. I must admit I learnt a lot about futbol from his posts in worldcupblog. But later it became personal attacks on fellow bloggers, their wives and sisters and moms.

Hope he has grown up. And not obsessed with argentine players in France. He has to understand the game has changed and refrain from personal attacks.

There will be a boiling point to all of this mess and unstablilty... a new chapter in the History of football may begin...

So far, 2014 is looking like a counter attacking world cup. I didn't see a possession buildup goal so far in this tournament. Argentina has been made a counter-attacking machine under sabella. So the matter to check, how we can apply our counter-attacking depth.

We all know how Costa Rica played in the last Copa with young players. This performance shows why Mexico struggled to qualify from there. Sabella is right to test 5-3-2...First Spain...now Uruguay...We have to be careful...!

Absolutely sluggish display from Uruguay... I tipped as one of the semifinalist but with this pathetic display,, they will go out... today an Underdog has defeated an Underdog!!!!... what a story this WC is making... I know now for sure that Romero is miles better than that pathetic Muslera...

This WC is becoming more and more like 2002....

European champions (and world champions) humiliated.
Now South American champions humiliated.
This is turning into a great WC!
What's next?

Never write off a Latin america team in this world cup, same goes for Honduras..These teams are playing in their elements and they're Hungary to prove a point..

A star study team is never a good thing, it comes with too much complacency..I like the squad Sabella pick, a lot of low key players that will prove their worth for being on the team..

ohhhh....3rd goal? whats happening in this world cup? uruguay is no pushover, yet costa rica scored 3rd...we can never undermine our supposedly weak first opponents..actions speak louder than words, i shall prefer boasting at social websites only after messi poses with the trophy...before that let us not jinx our team...i am fully confident of my team, but this is football and anything can happen on a given day...so lets wait and pray hard...

World Cup is always surprise package! None did think Italy to win 2006 WC, Argentina to eliminated from 1st round in 2002 or Netherlands to play the final of 2010. 2014 is definitely bringing some surprise!

Totally agree Deb. It's not fear of Germany or France, but we need to take advantage of our best draw. If possible, it's better not to meet Portugal either. Portugal played almost close to park the bus when meeting a stronger team and their goalie is very good at PK shootout.

But if we have to meet any of them, so be it. They should fear us, not vice versa.

@Kidult: I have no idea why you want Germany to come 2nd in their group. Because that will mean we face them in the quarters yet again. I don't think we should love to see that. I want Argentina to get to the final match as comfortably as possible. Germany and France need to top their groups and get to the other side of the draw. Let them do whatever they feel like over there, we don't care.

As things stand now, Netherlands and Uruguay have a good chance to stay in our side and we may be facing one of them in the semis. The other two knockout matches may be against the likes of Ecuador, Switzerland, Belgium or Portugal. That's a decent enough competition. Don't ask for more challenges please. Brazil went to the 2002 final without playing a title contender team. We want similar luck. Nothing wrong with that. People remember teams who win tournaments, not how they make it.
