The Final List of 23
The moment that we have all been waiting for since the provisional squad of 30 players was announced last month as has arrived.

Alejandro SABELLA has announced the list of 23 players that will board the flight for Brazil.

Goalkeepers:
Sergio ROMERO (Monaco
 Mariano ANDUJAR (Catania)
Agustín ORION (Boca Juniors)

Defenders:
Ezequiel GARAY (Benfica)
Federico FERNANDEZ (Napoli)
Pablo ZABALETA (Manchester City)
Marcos ROJO (Sporting Lisbon)
José María BASANTA (Monterrey)
Hugo CAMPAGNARO (Inter Milan)
Martin DEMICHELIS (Manchester City)

Midfielders:
Fernando GAGO (Boca Juniors)
Lucas BIGLIA (Lazio)
Javier MASCHERANO (Barcelona)
Ángel DI MARIA (Real Madrid)
Maxi RODRIGUEZ (Newell’s Old Boys)
Ricardo ÁLVAREZ (Internazionale
Augusto FERNANDEZ (Celta Vigo)
Enzo PEREZ (Benfica)

Forwards:
Sergio AGUERO (Manchester City)
Lionel MESSI (Barcelona)
Gonzalo HIGUAIN (Napoli)
Ezequiel LAVEZZI (Paris Saint Germain)
Rodrigo PALACIO (Internazionale)

The three players that did not make the cut are Nicolás OTAMENDI, Éver BANEGA and José SOSA.

I think SOSA was not surprise as most of us were hoping that he didn’t make the trip, OTAMENDI was already in line to face the cut but surprise, surprise Ever BANEGA. Personally with Fernando GAGO fitness still a matter of concern was very much hoping BANEGA could provide some cover for him.

The rest are pretty much what we’ve expected all along.

The clubs with the most representation are Manchester City & Inter Milan with three players.

For Manchester City, Martín DEMICHELIS will join both Pablo ZABALETA and Sergio AGUERO in the list. While Hugo CAMPAGNARO, Ricardo ÁLVAREZ and Rodrigo PALACIO are from Inter Milan.

So now the comment section is all yours! Give us your thought & opinions on this team.

@pablo.d:

I still remember his gold days with Lazio, he was the reason why I supported the club, and most accurate, his goal against Verona in 99 (the goal from the corner)

abs: correct he was ranked no 1 in 01 and in italy has 1000 more passes then his nearest rival for that year before manure ruined him.

@el principe How can you say Verón was only top 50! In 2001 he was hired by ManU as the highest player transfer at the time (42.5 euros). He was undoubtedly the best MF and arguably MVP at the WCQ and had a remarkable passage through Lazio 1999-2001. If he wasn't top 10 in his position at that time, we might as well not even remember he existed.

dammage7: "2002 squad was better to than 2014"
i agree it was better man of man.

its a shame it all went wrong at the same time from veron moving to manutd and he then went from the best mid in italy to utter crap, ayala got injured, bati lost form and could not hit a barn door, bielsea failed to have any sort of plan b.

i also think we had the mind set we won the cup before we played a game as all the world was saying its ours, it seemed our players thought all we needed to do was turn up and it was ours.

on paper and the year before the w/c, what a team the 02 team was.

You know honestly the Argentina squad of WC 2002 is not that good. I mean the players had been playing together for a long time. The core of the team was similar to the 1998 team, but INDIVIDUALLY they were not that many world class compared to Brazil, the champs at the time.

In 2002:

Aimar was just a young talented playmaker, not yet a world class.

Batigol was at the end of his career, not even close to the 1998 Batigol

Crespo was one of the best #9, but was a subs
Piojo/Kily was just OK as they had always been

Ortega was playing for River, considered Europe flop already, although he was great for River

Veron was a great midfielder, but just top 50 in the world at most, definitely not top 10

Simeone got nothing left but determination and hard work

Zanetti was great, but he never a one man show type of player

Pochettino was a good teammate, but was so so
Walter Samuel was world class
Ayala was world class but was injured

Placente was a stupid call. Close to being as bad as Bielsa's puppet, Nelson Vivas

Cavallero was possibly the second worst Argentina WC starting goalie ever after Luis Islas (1994)

See. Yes we had a solid system. Bielsa 3-4-3 was great in the WCQ, as they top the group, but not solid players.

Compared to our 2014 squad? We're a lot more solid individually (Messi, Aguero, Higuain, Di Maria, Masche, Zaba are world class) and just as solid as the 2002 team tactically.

Ahhh the 2002 WC failure. Yes, on paper it was one of the best teams in AFA history and it was devastating and unfathomable that we did not even get out of the group phase, let alone win the friggin thing. But that's football. The universe has a way of evening things out in weird and inexplicable ways. Let's face it, our 1990 WC team had no right to make the final as we should have been smashed out by Brazil in the round of 16, but we won with one moment of Deigo & Cannigia magic - how good did it feel seeing the Brazilians in disbelief at the end of that match :)

I honestly feel Messi is destined to win a World Cup because he is supernatural and I feel his time is in this forthcoming World Cup. I've said it before and I'll say it again, this list is extremely well balanced and the midfield with the addition of Enzo has just increased our chances of winning the WC tenfold. If Sabella plays Enzo as a true #8 which I'm hoping he does (box to box midfielder) and is exactly what our team has been missing in the last few years, then Argentina will be unpredictable with the avenues of attack going forward as we'll have 2 playmakers - Angel and Enzo. With that quality feeding the ball to Messi, Arguero & Higuain, holy shit is all I can say.

The big if will be if the occasion gets to Enzo, but the guy is 28 and he is used to pressure and most importantly of all, he has a clear and stable head, something that Banega lacked unfortunately despite his immense talent, and that is why I'm ecstatic that Enzo is in and Ever is out

whatever it is i dont rate that team highly worldcup qualifier is not that important its all about how you perform at the worldcup i know that was a group of death still when ur best u have to beat the best and ayala absence made the impact that itself point out that there were some defeciencies how with so many stars a team was knocked out from group stages alone?? i remember i was furious at that time that was a nightmare so come worldcup i would be very nervous u know football played on field not on paper

@pablo.d Even J.P.Sorín, who is now an ESPN commentator here in the brazilian subsidiary and overall a very diplomatic guy in his opinions about others in football, made it clear that he assigned a lot of the blame for the 2002 debacle upon Bielsa. The conversation that was taking place was about a speculated transaction involving Bielsa and Santos F.C. (it didn't happen because Bielsa asked circa 1M BRL/month to be their head coach) and someone at the table said his opinion, directed to Sorín, that maybe the price was too high but there was no question that he was a great coach. Sorín pondered on his response and practically excusing himself from elaborating on the subject, said he was a very good professional but as for his experience workinh with him, he won't forget how great a failure was the 2002 participation.
Well, neither am I. I'll probably never see an Argentina squad as good as that one ever again.

I persony not agree and don't like this decision by sabella however I I wish My beloved Argentina NT all the best in Brazil. I respect sabella, he is very good coach and smart. Everyone of us wish to have there on list of player and you know that will never going to happen. So far so good. I reaaly not sure if i want demichelis to be on the list but who knows what sabella is thinking. I hope and I wish this world cup it will be Argentina world cup only. 2002 WC team had world class backup for every position. you could have 2 world class team out of it and any team could have won the world cup.. 2002 should be the strongest Argentina world cup team i have ever watched!! Unfortunately they peaked too early and injuries and BAD LUCK lead to early elimination ...Damn!!!

I am not comparing 2002 with 2014, just defending my earlier claim that our current midfield is not as good as it was back then. See my first post on this topic.

Our current midfield can compete with most other big contenders. The difference is our forward line, which is the best in the world. At least on paper. During the Copa America 2011 it did not win us anything. Just like Rup stated: big names do not guarantee a prize.

I do not fancy an encounter with Germany.

I just hope Messi can prove it in his third WC. Only one goal so far and no title. It must be now, because next time he will turn 31 at the WC.

Messi should win with Argentina, otherwise people will say 25 years from now that he was a great club player.

He is far better than for example Zlatan. But Zlatan won 11 champion titles in 13 years and had a significant part in domestic titles with Ajax, Juventus, AC Milan, Inter Milan and Paris St Germain. And he also won with Barca. That's 4 countries and many clubs. He won't win anything with Sweden.

Now imagine these stats 25 years in the future for someone who did not see both of them play. Many titles with one club or many titles in different countries with different clubs. Just think about it.

Messi needs to win it for Argentina.

Vamos!

@ Rup
The 2001/2002 Argentina side struck fear in the hearts of opponents. Thanks to a wave of talent and a coach who preached attacking football most opponents were outplayed and overpowered. Argentina qualified for the WC 2002 12 points ahead of Brazil!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2002_FIFA_World_Cup_qualification_(CONMEBOL)

Next to champions France we were huge favorites, but went out in the first round.

What went wrong with magnificent players such as Batistuta, Crespo, Veron, Kily, Simeone, Aimar etc?
1st Our captain Ayala injured himself in the warm-up of the first game and did not play in the WC. When Argentina loses its captain, it has problems (remember 1994).
2nd Bielsa refused to play Batistuta and Crespo together. Tell me about stubborn coaches…
3rd The dressing room fight between Veron and Simeone at half time in the England team did not help. Team spirit went right out the window. Veron was playing really bad against England.
4th The game against Sweden was incredible in a bad way. We should have won by 3 or 4 goals, but somehow that did not happen. Sweden crossed the half way line only several times and scored. I have watched the game 3 times on VHS and still can’t figure out why we did not score more goals.
Like I stated below our current midfield is a mere shadow of the 2002 midfield. I agree with you that the best players do not always win. The 1982 Brazil midfield was the best ever (Zico, Socrates, Falcao and Eder played magnificent, but did not win). Let’s hope we win with this team. Team spirit seems to be good. Sabella talked to many previous coaches and learned quite a bit.

Agreed. I sure hope that Argentina can win this time without any stains. They bribed Peru in 1978 and then of course there was the handball in 1986.

A clear convincing winning run like during the 2004 Olympics would be very welcome.

@Vishik - what Baker said. There won't be any pubs or restaurants open that late into the night/early into the morning! The best thing to do is to get a large screen or a projector at home, get your buddies at home, pop open a few cold ones and party with the WC game projected onto a big-assed wall, log into to Mundo and abuse each other, and then go to work , red-eyed and get #$#%#$ by your boss as well! :-)

The inclusion of perez is not a surprise but we all thought it would be augusto who will be shown the door.. but Sabella have a surprise up his sleeve, my mind says.. also this inclusion will baffle other team coaches and technicians who will be forced to guess about possible formations and strategies for players.. as we all know every team would have found a way to check every player by now based on the team announcements and previous games.. but since our team are having relatively new members it would keep them guessing that.. I hope our new inclusions li e up to their expectations and especially in case of perez would prove to be a master move by tactician Sabella

I feel only spain is better than us in papers, courtesy - goal keeping options n defense with more big stage experience... Same time we thrash dem in talent upfront... Germany, i m not sure on their concerns upfront n back, midfield is a good one n surely GK... But if ricky can live up to his talent our's is atleast de shared best, we r a head in DMs, de questions are only on creative mid or goal scoring mid options, but considering our strike force our mid is only need to protect de ball well n get de ball to advanced positions without breaks n contribute defensively... I feel this is very talented n balanced squad, now all will be based on the perfomance on pitch...

Shafat Higuain will be back defending, so too Mascherano...Having three players in the box over 6 feet is more than enough with other players like Mascherano left to clean up the scramble balls..Romero is also well over 6 foot, that's the reason Sabella put faith in him so much..Basanta and Alvarez are also above 6 foot..

Height is not a problem. Our height is decent in our own half If not in the opposition end. fernandez garay rojo quite okay aerially.

but i wonder if three of them would be enough in defending set pieces. although lately we improved in that aspect a lot.

we have to mind that sabella is mainly a defensive minded coach he will structured the team like that so come worldcup you see a very solid, compact defensively organized argentina with counter attack coming from fab4 i think this argentina side is very tough to beat they have the potential to score a lot without conceding much just we need to address the fullback position if fullbacks sit deep and defend rather moving in attack slowness count for nothing they all are hard tacklers and in terms of goalkeeping woes romero is a good keeper just he is short of match practise and confidence after playing 2 friendlies and group stages he will be fine in that respect also we just have to ensure we top the group and dont show all the cards to opponents to analyze our game then we may reach semi/final or even can win it but that is too early to say vamos argentina !

People complaining about why no Otamendi or Sosa.. Sosa couldn't even start for Atletico Madrid, decent sub, but nothing too special. Otamendi is trash. I'm sorry. Please look at WC 2010, and watch him. Terrible marking, he is sole reason Germany kicked our asses. Muller and Klose torched him. And 4 years have passed and he still hadn't change or gotten any better.
Stop with Wily. Yes I wish he would of got a call up, but Sabella has used this same team and same group of guys for 2-3 years. Team chemistry and bonding is a big must for the team to play well.
This is also why Tevez isn't there. I love Carlitos as much as anyone, but just look at him last year at City, his ego get the best of him, and yes had a great year with Juventus but once again, reminding folks he last played versus Colombia and got a silly red card and let his ego get him again. No need for that on this close group knit team.
Zabaleta and Rojo good wide backs to push up. Garay beast in the middle, Fede is decent but has played with same backline for years, chemistry boost.
Mascherano and Di Maria are great at midfield. And either Gago/Maxi/Biglia/Enzo/Ricky will help out fill other role at mid.
Finally up top... with Kun~ Messi~ Higuain.. perfect attacking line. Lavezzi brings pace as a sub, palacio is decent, won't get much action.

Group winners.. I can see this team getting semifinals pretty easily. We shall see who they play, and hope to finally see my country win a WC in my lifetime. (24yrs old )
Vamos Argentina Carajos!!!!

@Trini - have fun brother! Fantastic opportunity for you.

@ Joji - Nobody is giving anyone false hopes here. Some are optimistic-all is well fans, some are realistic and some are ultra pessimistic-doomsday fans. You must really feel tortured watching Argentina every single time they take the field to play a game, don't you. Especially with the lack of a "fluid midfield" and an average squad? Why do you even watch it or bother commenting about them then? Why not just save yourself the trauma and switching off till there comes this fictional point of time in future where you are ABSOLUTELY satisfied with a squad selection?

Trust me man, there is no point watching a sport you love this way. Sure , you might feel that you are setting yourself up for what you think is some impending doom, with Argentina crashing and burning, at which time you can tell the rest of us "I told you so!" So what? If Argentina do screw up, it's fine. All of us will still be here, just like you will be too.

Just enjoy the ups and downs, grow a pair and have some faith in the team man. THE TEAM. Enjoy the good times, and for the bad times, well we all are here to crib together. Try stopping this self-torture and everything-sucks attitude, and at least be a little more realistic. Practically single fan acknowledges that there are some negatives or areas for improvement in the team, but no way in hell is it going to stop us from focusing on the positives and enjoying to celebrate the TEAM we all love, whether they do well OR NOT!

Enzo Perez's performance in club was so amazing this year, he may eventually take Gago's place to pair with Maschereno. Instead of playing 3 attackers, I would sacrifice Higuain for Maxi Rodriguez. My favorite lineup will be: Adujar-Zabeleta,Fernandez,Garay,Rojo-Masch,Perez-Maxi,Messi,Di Maria-Aguero

@travis,man i share the same sentiments wit you.this argentina squad is jst average.goal.com profiled arg keeper as the weakest in the whole tournament.that midfield lack fluidity.but guys here dnt want to face reality.arg up to group stages period.i luv arg but am not blind i can see there is no hope.but johnny & co are busy giving fans false hope.am not a prophet a doom but i lives in reality.so lets hope the AFA will apoint a decent coach after this to put a decent team together.but for 2014 only god can save argentina

I have to say I'm feeling much better about he midfield, Ricky and Enzo can add alot to the midfield's balance (since they can both defend and create effectively) when coming off the bench.
Infact I think a midfield of Angel, Gago, Masch and Enzo would be perfect against to teams like Brazil, Germany, Italy and Spain since it has the perfect blend of Creativity, skill, hard work and dogged defensive mentality.

The only thing I'm worried about now is the 2 friendly games coming up, I really hope that Sabella will field the B team since the core squad has had over 2 years (not to mention over 2 weeks of uninterrupted training) together so our main players shouldn't be risked in 2 meaningless friendlies.

This was Sabella's first team with Argentina for WCQ.

Goalkeepers:
Sergio ROMERO
Mariano ANDÚJAR
Esteban ANDRADA

Defenders:
Martín DEMICHELIS
Nicolás BURDISSO
Ezequiel GARAY
Nicolás OTAMENDI
Pablo ZABALETA
Cristian ANSALDI
Nicolás PAREJA
Marcos ROJO
Federico FERNÁNDEZ

Midfielders:
Javier MASCHERANO
Éver BANEGA
Ricardo ÁLVAREZ
Fabian RINAUDO
Jonás GUTIÉRREZ
Javier PASTORE
Luis GONZÁLEZ
José SOSA

Forwards:
Ángel DI MARÍA
Gonzalo HIGUAÍN
Lionel MESSI
Eduardo SALVIO
Sergio AGÜERO
Lisandro LÓPEZ

Look how the midfield has evolved and Mascherano and Ricky are the only midfielders from this list present in his final 23 for world cup. He knew we had problem in that part of the team and so he tried every possible scenerio.

The attack and defence is pretty much the same with Zaba, FF, Garay, Rojo and Fantastic four.

I think we have enough creativity in our fantastic four and Gago. Enzo Perez adds stamina with creativity. Augusto adds stamina and defensive capabilities. His work rate will help the team. Ricky has enough creativity and he works hard too. I think Sabella tried to pick hard working creative players rather than more creative but lousy player like Banega.

Guys its time to be behind our team w/e the selection is. Its not the time to whine its too late. I believe this team is miles ahead of the 2010 team. O come on ! The qualifiers say it all. Just compare the results . The Captain himself is miles better. Its ok to be scared of the WC but if u r still whining ur not a true fan. Be a brave fan. And if u are a poser this is not ur site. I believe we have what it takes.

Let theanalysis begin…

Here’s my drop in the bucket.

Attack – by far the best in the tournament. If Brazil had this forward line they would be celebrating already

Midfield – decent set of players with stamina, resilience and experience. We’re a little short on creativity due to Lamela’s injuries and Pastore’s lousy work ethic but will do okay. Major weaknesses are that none of these players has a good shot from 20-25 meters and there are not enough left footed players.

Defense - an experienced set of players that will help us through many difficult moments. Length will prevent aerial disasters from crosses and corners. Major is issue is lack of speed because Fernandez, Demichelis, Basanta and Campagnaro are all pretty slow. Peruzzi should have been included.

Goalkeepers – by far the worst selection of the big contenders. Sabella chose to ignore Willy, our only keeper on par with Buffon, Courtois and Neuer. This has been discussed many times here. Worries remain.

Well, exclusion of Banega was a huge surprise. Still, this squad is better than the 2010 one, and we have a manager who is tactically great, unlike Maradona who was out of his depth.

Di Maria aka the man who doesn't run alone aka "Fideo" ("Noodle") aka the man who once said "I run for my family, friends and neighbours," is going to be crucial for argentina in the world cup. To be honest, i think argentina will go as far as he takes us. In order for Messi to have a great Cup, Di Maria must play extremely well. He was he's own critic after he played badly in 2010. And he is aware of that. Because

this final 23 is a total nightmare to me.
i'm already sickened by the inclusion of romero, rojo, lavezzi and palacio.... and now demichelis, augusto, ricky alvarez and enzo perez???????

ok fine, at least sabella cut out his favorite water boy sosa and the drunk banega.

goodluck in group stage.

Always sabella gives surprises. It would be a toss between augusto and banega bcos gago still recovering he didnt want to lose ricky so he chosen banega. Inclusion of demi is not a surprise, once he been included in 30 then everyone knows he would be in 23

Renjith,
ricky alvarez is going as possible substitute for di maria...
banega was a sub for gago, as gago and banega cannot play together. the 4 times they started together in valencia, valencia received 20 goals...what is worse, the game before the started, and after, valencia won most of the times....

enzo goes as a substitute for gago, or to start... i think, and hope, that sabella will start enzo, most likely in a 442, but i would also love to see him in a 433 instead of gago, as enzo defends better and that can balance the team better... gago is talented but not physical, so i like the idea of bringing him as a substitute the last 30 minutes when the other team is more tired, and gago can exploit better his technique....

praises to sabella... he is the reason we may win the world cup!

I agree John ! Remember the high anxiety under Diego ? Squeaking into the WC with a miracle monsoon victory over Peru and then holding our breath in Montevideo ? Diego's insane squad with nightmare Ariel and Jonas playing RB ? Not to mention Diego's constant battles with the media, though at times comical, were an unnecessary distraction.

Argentina have a proper coach with Sabella. He won't satisfy every one of us with player selection but I think he will give Argentina every chance to be successful. I'd much rather have a "team" with a steady hand on the tiller than anything else.

Thanks for highlighting Renjith, I've done some amendment on the article.

Overall what can I say? I'm calmer and happier than I ever was compared to four years when Diego’s list gave me nightmares every single day.

I trust in this group simply because that it’s been 8 years since we last went to the World Cup with a proper coach who knows what he wants from his team. That to me says a lot, even more than the list of players on that list.

Fact is when it comes to Argentina; we have more than 100 players to talk about but in the only 23 will make the trip to the World Cup. It’s always been the case since my first World Cup in 1990.

So, time for anxiety to takes its toll as we await for the moment that first to kick off.

Alvarez and Perez can play behind Gago and they're way more consistant than Banega. Also, it seems like Augusto will be our wide wing option which is why Peruzzi was probably never included. Good versatile list and should be a good WC for Argentina

Its a good list and felt sad for banegas omission but his recent form and injury might have given sabell a second thought.
another point here is , sabella wil conider demi as the second back uption for garray/ff . i just hope both garay and ff wll be fit through out the tournament.

Banega please dont get wasted , u got enough talent to make it to the squad again.

At last the final 23 will be in the WC representing Argentina. Banega out was a surprise although his health and drinking habit issue is given him a problem to be solved; so bad for high gifted player.
