MASCHERANO: The 23 players have to be ready

Javier MASCHERANO, Fernando GAGO and Maxi RODRIGUEZ spoke at a press conference.

The three players spoke about Argentina and the World Cup. Here's what they had to say:

Javier MASCHERANO:
"We have to try and minimize our weaknesses as much as possible. The 23 players have to be ready. We aren't as possession based as Spain or Germany. We are more direct. There are several things we need to improve upon. At times we are so direct that we offer the other team opportunities in defense."

On playing against Germany:
"I'd first like to think about Bosnia-Herzegovina, Iran and Nigeria."

Maxi RODRIGUEZ:
"We know that MESSI is the face of the National Team but it's our responsibility as a whole to win matches."

Fernando GAGO:
"The injury is behind me. I'm good to go. We have to show in the first three matches that we are improving."

@Kidulthood: I really liked the video of Mascherano. If he can avoid booking he would be one hell of a performer in this world cup. All those tackles... My God !!!

Every game is different, we can assumed their going to park the buss, and we should.

Like Richard said, we have to score first, that will open the game up for us. We can slow it down too, and we should, and play possession style of soccer after we start to control the game.

We need to score first, open the game, and then play possession soccer.

The last thing we need is to play defense against strong opponents, unless, that's a strategy, (Spain).

I feel Spain, hands down is the only team by far that can dominate the midfield against us, so , it's best to use the counter attack against them as our main tactic.

Brazil and Germany, our ball possession should be about the same, both in the 45-55, can go either way for any team. These teams, is a must we have to control the midfield.

I also feel, that some teams are going to go all out and test our defense, so we have to prepare on that, which Sabella is doing this first days of training (emphasizing on defense).

Every match is different, set our defense, control the tempo, score first, and then play ball possession, which will make the opponents open up their style of play, which we want, a shot out. The last thing we want is a grudge match type of game, we are not that physical for that. We are skilled and finesse, so we have to understand our opponents weakness and strength as well.

Vamos Argentina!

masch , biglia , gago , banega can seriously disrupt spainbs midfield and dimaria can destroy there back line

@el principe: Remember it is not that easy to play counterattacking football and allow the opponent to attack you because that requires: Solid defence, solid goalkeeping, midfielders who are trained on how to generate golden passes to their attackers in the right time without falling in the offside trap, and finally hectic training for attackers on speed and agility.

For me if Argentina plans to play possession football at the world cup, they can out possession anyone even Spain..Mind you the last four games Argentina played against Germany including the 2 friendlies and world cup games, Argentina have had more possession than Germany in all four games..I don't watch who the other team has in their line up, if Argentina plans to play possession football they can out do any team when it comes to possession at the world cup..Sabella is just willing to look at different approaches rather than doing the usual sideways passes and backward passes.

Can we please stop comparing Argentina 4 finest to that of Real Madrid minus Di Maria...There is nothing fabulous about Benzema..We need to drop this ''FAB 4" thing too..We don't need to be comparing our players to Ancelloti system..Sabella system has been great so far..Sabella was the first to use Di Maria in the CAM position..Sabella also made Di Maria third to the captain armband after Messi and Mascherano, so yes, we have always value our main man Di Maria aka the ''Noodle..''

Mascherano long passes r really impressive, is very much acclaimed by pundits at barca n i think datz de reason y he is trying that too often at NT also... And main or only reason why gago is in team is his passing range n vision, no dfnsv skills or finishing abilities... Bt 1 thing is right if he is not in full flow or fitness he look like a waste... I personally like to see biglia or perez partnering masche if fab4 start over gago n banega... Bt itz all about sab, he is de one to make decisions, what we do... And we all know that with this formation we can't control or dictate de tempo of game...

You are right! This is one of our team weakness, we dont have guys, who can shoot from distance. Gago is awful, Di Maria can do it, but he is not the best also. Messi can do it, but its not one of his best sides. Banega-Biglia - nothing special.

This is weakness for sure.

@Pradi
But we don't have guys, who can make those brilliant passes, not often at least. Mascherano pinpoint passing??!! Jesus, compere our CM to other top teams midfields, we are awful. Our pinpoint passes guys are Di Maria (best in the world, I guess) and Messi (second best). They must work back and try pinpoint passes, when it seems reasonable.

But what we can understand from their words is we are gonna rely mainly on counters... Either through the quick bursting run of di maria thru left, an incisive pass of gago from deep or pin point long balls from masche... The individual brilliants up front who complement each other will finish de move... Thatz all... No patient indirect plays... Means our dfnsv unit need to really work hard to stop oppossition de time without possession...

fools, the fab 4 need someone from the back 6 to have balls and push forward to support them, gago needs some nuts to help the so called fab4, if not he can sit at home and let perez or banega do this.

Argentina dont attack as a unit and leave everything to the front 4. and masernao needs to stop believing he is riquelme and keep his passes simple

What i feel is, as sab is sticking wit 4-3-3 itself n de type f subs we hav for full backs, the back 4 will b assigned only with dfnsv duties means will b avoided from going forward n is guided to stay deep n hold de dfnsv position itself... While attacking only fab4 n gago will b moving forward freely... Atleast 80% our full backs will b focused on dfnsv duties rather than attacking through wings n going out of position in quick counters... I feel so...

Lack of possession increase defensive issues, something shud b done to fix that... Also as richard said if we concede first, we will b forced for more open play n chance to concede counter attacks is more...

The further you advance in the tournament, scoring first will be more important. The opponent has to come forward to score a goal and we will be able to score more goals from counter attack. Certainly with Di Maria's speed.

If we fall behind, the reverse becomes highly likely.

but still they have to be defensively very strong to be successful as a counter attacking style so thats why mayb sabella giving more importance to b compct and defensively solid

One thing I notice about Argentina is that the best first eleven (when Sabella did not experiment) looked better when they "allowed" the opponent to attack them, which means less full court closing down and pressing.

I heard the commentator said that Madrid and Atletico, the finalists of the CL ball possession % in the whole year are not that high. They are about just 50%. Madrid with 52% or something, Atletico is just about that number, which means their philosophy both do not believe in ball possession that much.

Sabella is the same. At least the games against Paraguay (5-2), Sweden (3-1), and Germany (3-1) are the games where the more they attacked us, the more they ruined themselves by our fantastic four.

Do you notice that la liga teams or European teams are a lot more likely to park the bus against Barca than Madrid? You know why? Because Barca emphasize on ball possessions and a lot of passing in midfield force the opponents to have no choice but defend.

Where Madrid is different. Madrid direct style which means they emphasize on fast counter attack and their emphasize on the speed of their players make the opponents have no time to settle for park the bus.

I expect Argentina to have the average of around 50% of ball possessions in the whole World Cup. That'd be best for us.

Remember, it is called "counter" attack because we need to be attacked in order for us to counter attack.

@everyone who compares Argentina F4 to. Madrid F4:
Unlike Madrid we concentrate our counter through the centre of the pitch and I think that's the reason we struggled against pacy wing play(Ecuador). It makes Zabaleta the only man on right side.Yes Gago helps, but he's not a winger.I believe that's the reason Sabella selected Lavezzi and Palacio who could contribute a lot to wing play and defending.Another reason to believe Sabella,he foresee the situations. So F4 would be a hit against Spain and Italy who packs their MF.And we can solve the issue if Sabella tells Kun and Pipita to drag the wingback of opposition to centre by suddenly cutting in and out to center and wing.It opens space for Messi to torture CB pairing, which makes them panic and compelling CDMs to close down Messi and make them unbalance their system,It will cut the services to their Wing MFs.I think this is the Sabella plan,And I believe he'll make Kun and Pipita do the needs to take out the pressure from our thin MF and back4 especially our wibgbacks.Just my view though!!!

many european sides may park the bus against us to break that trap we need some players who can shoot from distance with high precision dimaria is good at it banega is also allright but other than them who can take that responsibility?? mayb messi should shoot from distance more often than what he does in barcelona shirt sabella should encourage him to shoot from distance more often for the argentina NT then he would be deadly and will become unmanageable

interesting words from mascherano?? what tht means they r preparing for more possesion base tactics or they will stick to counter attacking stye of play?? we may see some surprising variation of playing style from argentina but i prefer sticking to the old style which was successful in wc qualifier more compact and defensively organisation would be good direct approach is needed

This is our problem against "park the bus" teams. It's so nice to see that they are trying to find a solution.
