Javier MASCHERANO: "No margin for error"

Javier MASCHERANO spoke about Argentina and the World Cup.

Javier MASCHERANO spoke to the media in Argentina about the World Cup. Here's what he had to say:

"As of June 15, there's no margin for error. My head is 100% thinking about the National Team. Hopefully we can have a great World Cup."

About playing in midfield or as a defender:
"It doesn't bother me to play both. I love playing as a midfielder, it's where I've played my entire life. But I also enjoy playing as a CB."

It is true the team has flaws but every other team is the same they all have flaws, let us be optimistic , we are lucky when it comes to the draw and travelling and the heat , that is big difference, and our players are hungry and want to prove something which is good for us , messi is obsessed in this World Cup it is great for us , let us be optimistic and stop the back and forth Pickering , it is time for argentina , this is our cup

@kidulthood... its time to grow up man. we "thrashed" spain 4 -1 in argentina ... Do you know that spain just won the world cup before that match and argentina literally fuck up by germans before that macth ??.

Argentina won that match because thay needed to remove tha shame And between spain and argentina only argentina had something to prove back then.

Guys i work in tourism a lot. I get plenty of people from brazil, and most brazilians dont even want brazil to win the wc. I got a group yesterday that would rather have argentina win. Really shows the situation there. Things are bery complicated, brazil is not ready for a wc.

@waveride: This is the reason why people say Germany is better than Argentina A) They have players playing for Bayern B) They have players playing for BVB..So now tell me, what does playing for Bayern and BVB in the UCL has to do with the world cup? Argentina is as talented as any of the BIG footballing nation on planet earth, and even more so, Argentina is a more talented footballing country than Germany...Lets put it this way, exchange country location between Germany and Argentina and you'll see the spot light would always be on Argentinian players instead of German players given that they (Germany) would now be a South American base country...Argentinian young players does not have the same marketing opportunity back home like the players from Germany and England..This is also something you guys should know, during this season UCL, the German clubs have conceded the most goals in the entire competition, so much for Germany having great defense and Argentina bad defense..As waveride said,I too want someone here to tell me why they think Germany is better than Argentina at the moment?

Now to Brazil, why is everyone here always afraid to say Argentina is better than Brazil, of course we are better than Brazil at the moment, this team have been playing together for years now with lots of experience beating Brazil twice, once in Batista era and the other in Sabella era..Now I know, Argentina while being the better team have lost to Brazil in recent memories during tournaments like Copa America, but we can all fix those failings at this summer world cup..The only thing Brazil has over Argentina is home court support which we will not be short of btw..We have shown already that we can beat Brazil at the Maracana when it hold a capacity of 100,000 fans..

Now to Spain, yes they have won the world cup the last time around, but when was the last time Spain defeat Argentina or play against Argentina style of football? Spain is not a superior team to Argentina by no means..This is the same team we trash 4 - 2 in Buenos Aires and they have majority of the same players today while our team have change under Sabella...If Argentina should play against Spain, Messi would be the first to give Sabella clue on the whole tiki taki style of play.

Some writer said Argentina was one dimensional?Nope that's not true, Sabella plays counter if necessary and keep ball if necessary..What about Spain, are they not one dimensional? yes. Aren't Portugal one dimensional? Yes. Aren't Germany one dimensional? Yes.

When I go to other sites and see the hate and animosity towards Argentina football team, it really ticks me off, but to come on Mundo of all places and see the same thing hurts like crazy...Chalz is a perfect example about is ''Argentina cheat'' comment.

maraDON, I agree at everything you said dude, not only now but most of your posts.
I am wondering, did the the Argentinian government agreed with the peruvian government the peruvian team to hit the post before even Argentina score their first goal?? Hilarious!!
I am telling you man i was watching the 2010 world cup where maradona was the manager (in my humble opinion maradona is the best player i have ever seen, but he was not a coach, he made big mistakes) the majority of Greek journalists were bashing Argentina and Maradona in a way i could never understand. Why can somenone be that offensive to maybe the most spectacular team? These journalists stated that they have witnessed a beautiful match between Brasil and North Corea, which seemed to me one of the most boring matches of the WC.

I barely post in mundo but i always read the news and comments regarding our beloved team since i discovered the site in 2011. Although i am trying to respect everyone's opinion, there are some people here, who they are trying to be grounded and respect Argentina's opponents (something which is wise), but at the same time they are overoptimistic regarding Brasil, Spain and Germany, they believe to these teams even more than their own respective fans.
These people never gave a serious reason why they believe that Brasil, Spain and Germany are better teams than Argentina and they are attacking Kidulthood because he says the obvious: Why we should consider the above teams as better than Argentina?

I am an Argentina fan for 17 years, Argentina is the reason i started watching football, and due to the previous failures i am grounded, neutral and cautiously optimistic. For me Argentina is at least at he same level with Brasil, Spain and Germany, but most of the times it is not the best team that wins. We should have won at least one WC if you ask me.
I think that we must be humble, grounded, respect every team and not only our rivals, but we should also keep a little bit of faith regarding our team.

Kidulthood, your passion and loyalty to the team are admirable, i always enjoy reading your thoughts. Keep it up dude!

WAVERIDE IM SMILING AT THE FACT I NOW HAVE A EQUAL HERE AT MUNDO ,Im truly thankful for that dont forget owen dived for 2 pentaltys in two seperate world cups , and il add to what you stated about 1994 , diego maradona is the only sports person in history to be on global tv escorted from play by a nurse THE NURSE OUTFIT WAS OVER THE TOP AND FAKE TO HUGE ASS CROSS ON HER CHEST LIKE A NURSE OUTFIT FROM A PORN MOVIE...escorted from play public viewing the world over then he was tested by USA goverment lab NOT FIFAs lab.... and the result was a drugs cocktail only found in james bond movies that make you super-human....

the whole thing was a set up there was no drugs cocktail there was no coke he only had dieting drug in his system also helpful in getting coke out of the system in addicts

he was clean and it was the drug used to help flush him out and get him of coke that was in him nothing more many many many players including gary linecker etc all said it was bullshit and he should never had been banned he was a recovering addict nothing more nothing less,

two reasons for it brasilian president of fifa andthe usa goverments political reasons because diego was pro cuba ,the whole thing was a set up...

england fouled diego more than any other match in 1986 and were cheating the entire game...

"Can people finally regard Argentina as a great team rather than a bunch of cheats?"

Chalz, with all due to respect dude, what are you talking about?
Should we talk about cheats??

1)Lets talk then about England's only one WC in 1966 when the ball never passed the line.
2)Germany's two world cups, 1958 where the whole team admitted that they were doped, and back in 1990 in the final against Argentina when Germany won with a non existent penalty, good timing for Germany to be world cup winners and unite people after the fall of the wall right??
3)1994 world cup in USA, the country that Maradona had expressed his political beliefs and ideas that were against them, and a world cup that president of fifa that time was the Brasilian joao Havelange. What happened? Maradona became THE ONLY PLAYER EVER who was tested for doping and of course Brasil won the world cup.
4) 2002 world cup. I really don't think that Brasil deserved to win this world cup neither south corea should had gone that far, because of the refs. Do you remember the Brasil-Turkey game where Turkey outplayed Brasil and Brasil won by 2-1 with a non existent penalty? Actually it was a free kick just outside the area but the ref decided to give a penalty. Do you remember the Turkish player that was sent off and Rivaldo's acting that the ball was hit his face? If I am not mistaken Rivaldo was not booked.

All of us the fans of Argentina love this team not only because of its history but mainly because of its unique beautiful style of play!

There are many people that they don't like or envy Argentina and they will try to show disrespect by any means.

We the fans must support, respect the team we love, and do not adopt any of their bullshit!

Argentina
.
The expectations of Argentine futbol after 1986.
.
I was born 1991, in Los Angeles to Argentinean parents. Growing up hearing stories of Mario Kempes and Diego Armando Maradona helping Argentina to World Cup glory always fascinate me. Problem is those two World Cups Argentina won, there is huge amounts of controversy. In 1978, Argentina was going under military coup which cause out roar across the globe. The great Johan Cruyff boycotted the World Cup. Legend have it the Argentinean government paid of the Peruvian government so Argentina national team is able to play the final. Mario Kempes was able to unite the whole country going through hard times.

1986, the World Cup that is the stuff of legends. Diego Armando Maradona single handily carried Argentina to World Cup glory. When mentioning the 1986 World Cup there is only one game that comes into mind, Argentina vs England. Four years prior both nations got into a war over the Falkland Island. Maradona scored two of the most important in futbol history. The first goal known as “Mano De Dios,” which gave Maradona title of a cheat. The second goal known as “The Goal of the Century,” gave the title of greatest of all time. Diego Armando Maradona is one of the most controversial sports figures of all time. In my eyes he did anything that help Argentina win even if it means doing illegal. 1990, Argentina have another hero. A goalie that captured a country’s heart with penalty saving performance especially against Italy in the semifinals. Sergio Goycochea. In the final Germany got their revenge from their loss in 1986 with a controversial penalty.

1994. This is the start of failed expectations for Argentina in the World Cup. Maradona is sent back home for banned substance which rattle the confidence of Argentine national team. Argentina lost against Romania in the round of 16. My dad went to that game and told me Argentina was not the same after Maradona ban.

1998. The first World Cup I truly remember. Possibly the best Argentina squad that didn't win the World Cup. A strong defense with Roberto Ayala Javier Zanetti. An amazing midfiled with Veron, Diego Simeone, and Marcelo Gallardo. Gabriel Batistuta the star of the Argentina attack. The most memorable match for Argentina was the round of 16 against England. That game was special in my heart. Great goals from both sides with an epic ending. Diego Simeone overreacting that made David Beckham a villian in his home country for a few years. Argentina prevail from a penalty shootout and move on to the quarterfinals. Argentina vs Holland. Holland in 1998 World Cup would break countries hearts by scoring in the last minute in nearlt every game in that World Cup. Ariel Ortega lost his head and headbutted Edwin van der Sar which got him sent off. Moments later Dennis Bergkamp scored a memorable goal in the last minute. Argentina was sent home.

2002. Argentina chocked and overrated. The squad that Argentina had in 2002 was capable to win it all. Brazil struggled to make it to the World Cup in 2002. Brazil got together at the right time and win it all. David Beckham was able to redem himself by scoring a spotkick against Argentina. The expectation for Argentina was so high and crubble under the pressure,

2006. Along with 1998 this is another Argentina squad was so great that didn’t win the World Cup. With likes of Hernan Crespo and Juan Roman Riquelme showing off the beautiful attack and creativity of Argentina. Lionel Messi made his debut. The Round of 16 was an emotional ride against Mexico which ending a epic goal with Maxi Rodriguez. The quarterfinals against Germany was one of the most heartbreaking game I have ever experienced. Roberto Ayala put us up against Germany in their own back yard. Then everything fell apart for Argentina. Roberto Abbondanzieri got hurt and Jose Perkerman did questionable subsitions. Germany took advanatage and scored with 10 minutes left of regular time. Germany beat Argentina in the penalty shootout and once again I have to wait another four years for Argentina to prove themselves.

2010. Diego Armando Maradona was the manager for Argentina. He had an attack mindset and was critize for putting Javier Zanetti and Esteban Cambiasso in the World Cup squad. Lionel Messi was expected to become an immortal in this World Cup. He did score a single goal and was destroyed by the Argentine media for not performing. Argentina got destroyed by Germany 4-0 in the quarterfinals.

Brazil 2014. This is the best Argentina squad in a long time. Will the expectation kill Argentina and underperform once again? Can Lionel Messi be in the likes of Pele, Garrincha, Franz Beckenbauer, Paolo Rossi, Diego Armando Maradona, Zinedine Zidane, and Ronaldo as World Cup immortals? Can people finally regard Argentina as a great team rather than a bunch of cheats? Can Argentina finally win an intertional tournament after 21 years? I just want Argentina to finally capture their third star and hopefully it’s against Brazil in the final. 2014 is expected to be one of the greatest World Cups ever. Hopefully it is and Argentina can carry the World Cup in July.

i am not concerned about defence or defensive minded mids we are quite solid there but i have some concern regarding creativity about argentina midfield they r not creative enough and may well lose the battle of midfield against likes of spain, germany and italy this 3 teams along with a counter attacking teams who attack in flanks r concerned as im not too confident about our fullbacks even zabaleta included i saw him struggling against pacy wingers when playing with argentina he is better in mancity but still not performed upto his potential in argentina jersey and romero will be not great but will not be bad also

I want Mascherano to join either Napoli or Liverpool. He has to play DM and not CB. I think Barca disrespected him and his ability. Mascherano won many titles there thats plus...i agree... but still as a player he could not show fully what he is capable of. Somebody make jokes about him as he makes some mistakes there. Any player will struggle to play CB role in the current Barcelona team where very few willing to try hard to defend. Mascherano has to show what he is capable of to the world just like Yaya Toure shows now after quitting Barca.

Argentina weaknesses, and strength

Goalkeeper: Romero, Andujar, Orion all 3 of them are not in form and doing extremely bad in their respected clubs.

Defenders: Zaba, and Garay both on great form for their respected clubs, and that will continue at the WC stages. Fede is inconsistent, although he's still one of the best pair with Garay, therefore no point to put him aside. Rojo is a terrible LB, nothing more to add.

Midfielders: Mascherano is GODZILLA. Gago with the worst injury in his career, need some sort of miracle to stay fresh and 100% healthy in next month, otherwise he's out even tho that's not what i want to see. Maria will put his 150% to the team, I trust him since I saw that fabulous goal against Canada in 2010.

Attackers: Kun and Higuain, we can never ask for more great strikers than this two pair, totally in form, great shapes, did great with both respected clubs. Higuain work harder this year especially with new club, which leads me to believe he will do just great at WC. Kun's injury worries me a bit, but seeing him in City with goals every each matches makes me trust him more than ever, infact i trust him since i saw his tremendous solo half the field goal against Brazil many years back.

Captain: Messi. This is his time, it's now or never for him.

Am I happy with Sabella's selection for this year Argentina WC squad? NO, not happy and actually I am extremely MAD.

So am i still supporting Argentina this year? YES, and of course, nothing more to add to that.

There's not much hope, but there's still a chance.

If Messi doing great this June, then Argentina will win WC 2014 in Brazil.

Oh yeah, still... Sabella is a jerk.

i think apart from team chemistry the most important thing that can win us the worldcup is mental strength and calmness there will be pressure to perform in knock out stages if we play tough and mentally tough then we will be victorious as i think we got a favourable draw not because of the teams we faced because we dont have to play in north or north-east of brazil so we would be closer to argentina and climate will also be favourable unlike many other teams who have to travel a lot and their playing venue can seriously fatigue them and jet lag may also come into play in knock out phases but it all comes down to how messi and important players handle the pressure the pressure will be huge no matter what

It was Rafael Benitez who signed the Argentine for Liverpool and it looks like the pair could team up again as the Italian club are preparing to make a move for him

Napoli are "working on" a deal that would bring Barcelona midfielder Javier Mascherano to the club, president Aurelie De Laurentiis has revealed.

Mascherano, who has been used regularly in defence at Barcelona since joining from Liverpool in 2010, has been the reported subject of interest from several overseas clubs recently.

And Napoli confirmed that they were in the race to sign the Argentina international who turns 30 next month, with De Laurentiis admitting that manager Rafael Benitez liked the player.

"Benitez knows Mascherano well. We are working on it but it's a difficult negotiation," the president is quoted as saying in Gazzetta dello Sport. "In any case, the player will turn 32 in two years' time."

De Laurentiis added that the Italian side would not be selling any of their players as they prepare for another Champions League campaign.

The Naples-based team will also be looking to improve on their third-placed finish in the Serie A and the president said Benitez is an integral part of their future.

"Right now no one is leaving," he added. "We have a strong roster and we don't have that many positions to fill.

"We changed 12 players this year and the team has ended the campaign on a high, achieving a club record 104 goals.

"This means that we already have an important foundation. We have planned with Benitez [for] the future and made a list of possible signings."

no margin for error indeed. I love how argentina has been playing direct football like the bayern of 12/13 season, we have everything tiki-taka, sexy counter-attacking, controlling the pace of the game and scoring, the only weak point probably is we dont score much from set-pieces. We demand a strong world cup this time around :)

@argy 2014 rojo has improved a lot lately and few teams have strong right wingers that can trouble rojo, most teams are stacked on the left so we will be fine on that aspect, as for goalkeeper I think it is the weakest link we have , the issue is not wether romero had game time in his club or not but I believe he has fundamental flaws becouse he makes same mistakes over and over again, which led me to believe that he has small hands and and that is the main reason he drops the ball, our hope is he makes less of those mistakes and if he ever does it happens in the first group games so sabella can replace him with the other goalkeepers

I'm glad we are ranked 7th just before the world cup kicks off. I'm grateful we are aware of our strength and other nations don't. I'm satisfied enough to see so many people underrate our squad, while I'm in a peace of mind!

Let them talk, let them say whatever they want. We are going to explode!

This is what we all hope and what we expect.

Its better to go with les pressure!

The writer is partially wrong when he said romania parked the bus, in fact we get many chances but we didn't take our chances , he also said we are one dimensional which is wrong , sabella is tactical and uses counter attack and fast transition as main tactic , and every team uses one tactic or another as main weapon, this writer doesn't know or watch our team lately we will prove him wrong

my understanding is that you can't win the world cup with a weak goalkeeper not to mention someone who didn't play for a whole year. I still think Rojo is a weak link in the defence and you will notice all opponents will attack us from the left flank. Our attack though is the strongest in the world.

MASCHERANO IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PLAYER FOR ARGENTINA BECAUSE WITH MESSI , AGUERO, HIGUAIN AND DI MARIA WE HAVE VERY GOOD FORWARD BUT IN THE BACK WE NEED PLAYERS LIKE MASCHERANO .... I ALWAYS SAY "AT FIRST WE MUST DEFEND WELL AFTAER THAT WE CAN WIN THE GAME"
--ZABALETA---FERNANDEZ---GARAY----ROJO-----------------
PEREZ----MASCHERANO--BANEGA---------------------
--------DIMARIA-----MESSI----AGUERO

Cambiasso, willy and tevez exclusion is unbelievable but sabella is master they simply do not fix under his tactics....who knows these three may be first choice for copa americano coz football is do crazy nowadays anything can happen with new manager and new camp.....

interesting points
"Through no fault of his own, however, Messi is very probably not going to lift the World Cup on July 13th. Argentina’s squad is just not strong enough to accomplish the feat. First choice goalkeeper Sergio Romero plays second fiddle to Croatia’s Danijel Subašić at Monaco and has made just four appearances this season. While Pablo Zabaleta and Ezequiel Garay are very capable defenders, their probable colleagues Federico Fernández and Marcos Rojo inspire much less confidence.

From a tactical point of view, too, Argentina are at a disadvantage. They are likely to play a very vertical counter-attacking game, sitting deep and springing forward with Ángel Di María, Sergio Agüero and Gonzalo Higuaín as well as Messi, an approach which maximises the four’s individual ability by allowing them lots of space with which to work, but one that has no recent history of success at this level. There is not a great deal on the bench that suggests they are going to be capable of changing their approach should an opponent park the bus"

I really hope we can make the writer eat his words but some of the points written we have been saying about on here.

if i chose the world cup squad i would have included tevez, samuel, cambiasso and willy caballero.

to have the option of fielding this team:

-------------------caballero----------------------------
-------zabaleta----samuel -----garay---------------------
--------------mascherano---------------------------
------------cambiasso------dimaria------------------------
----------------------tevez------------------------------
-----------higuain-----messi---------aguero----------------

with samuel almost playing a sweeper role and mascherano dropping back for 4 defenders or as a first stop defender with samuel covering masche when needed.

basically masche and samuel playing as a 2 man unit.

tevez as a natural enganche with cambiasso replacing him if tevez moves up the pitch to join the attack and dimaria running into space to join the attack with messi, higuain, aguero and cambiasso and tevez as a double enganche feeding the ball to the 4 strikers.

so basically a 3-2-2-3 or a 3-2-1-4 that can change to a 5-2-3 while defending.

messi would be at least in his natural position at the top of the box, and not have to be anywhere near the half line.

any decent pass to messi inside the box and it's a goal or a very good chance.
not to mention having aguero and higuain as options for messi or the double enganches.

theAbNormalOne: Ter Stegen was bought to replace Valdes not Pinto..If Willy was the first choice gk they (Barca) had in mind then Willy would be the one at the presentation this past Wednesday...I've seen rumors about Willy or the Levante goalkeeper being second choice keeper for Barcelona which is ridiculous..

@Kidult: If Willy go to Barca e won't be second fiddle to anyone.Instead he will start next season for sure with Ter Stegen used in Cup games to give him experience. And am not concerned with that.hen Willy is on top form he's world class, nobody can replace him(hint:vs Real)

Hopefully Mascherano leave Barcelona that ship is already sinking..And i heard Barca are trying to get Willy..Why should Willy go to barcelona to play second fiddle to some German rookie goal keeper!!Poor Messi for staying at Barcelona I wish he had move on..

Guled I agree with you that Mascherano is better than Busquet..Busquet is only built to play in the Barcelona system, if he should leave the club he will not cement a regular place in other top clubs..

Alam Argentina are already in training its just that all the players are not at camp at the moment, the rest will join up Monday to officially kick off training..BTW Those teams you mention still has a disadvantage because they will have to travel all the way from Europe to South America, while they will be on planes during hours of flight we will be on the ground training..

i think mascherano should move to napoli or liverpool (napoli closee to signing). If he stays in barca he again forced to play as cb because busquests play in every match and enrique quoted that maxi is great player and he has quality to be a captain but he likes him to play as back up cb (barca going to sign new cb (might be marquinhos)and pique ,mascherano would be rotated)

Mascherano is perhaps the only defensive midfielder I have ever seen playing a CB role with such great regularity and success. He is the fighter who is second to none.

Barcelona playing him in centre back for all these years will actually pay rich dividends for us, this I have always believed strongly. He is the leader our backline needs. If Mascherano is doing his business well, I don't think our full backs will have any concerns in going forward whenever required. He delivers 120% of an average DM potential.

And we are so lucky that we have got a decent backup for him as well, Lucas Biglia. His performance in that Uruguay match was astounding. Although I don't want Mascherano losing any single match in the world cup due to card issues or whatever, but the truth is we do have a backup for him who can also deliver in pressure situations.

Come on, Javier Mascherano. Just be as good as that Barcelona CB who gives his all on the field week in week out. This time you have to do it for just 7 matches, and the cup is yours. And ours.

He is on top form ...something that i happy about that is ...Martin De michelis can play on back line ..and masche can play strongly on midfield ..Just hope that Martin no eliminate by Sabella .. he can help Argentina .by this decision Argentina can make strong belt line and even Brasil cant disturb ..Argentina will achieve the world cup .

Some here really care about our coaches career. Coaches like Martino, Pekerman, Pochettino, Simeone, etc. That's nice of you.

I don't really care about our coaches. I said this million of times before. Why? Because if Pochettino has wonderful career in England. Does that have anything to do with our Argentina national team? NO.

If Pekerman succeed in Colombia, does that have anything to do with our Argentina national team? NO.

So, what's the point?

The only good thing about them (those Argentine coaches) being success is that they might buy a couple of extra Argentina players. That's all. But that's not a valid reason either since Martino or Pochettino for example, they hardly bought Argentina players. I know you'd say well the board did not allow them.. whatever... I just don't see any reason why I should be those coaches "twitter followers" if they got nothing to do with the mundo albiceleste national team.

In contrast, say that a foreign coach like Luis Enrique (next season) or Pep for example makes Messi reach an even higher level. Say that Messi scores 100 in one year breaking his own record. Does that have anything to do with Argentina national team? YES!

If a foreign coach like Pellegrini makes Aguero having a ratio of career best almost 1 goal/game. Or if a foreigner like Ancelotti make Di Maria the hottest midfielder in the world. Does it have anything to do with Argentina national team? YES!

So that's my point! Support our Argentina national team and ANYONE/ANY FACTOR that can make them even better.

I read that Luis Enrique thinks of Masche highly. He thinks Masche can be a captain. So does that mean he stays at Barca? Luis has yet to decide whether to play him as CB or DM.

Alex Song is on his way out to England. So if that's the case, let Busquets rotates with Masche for #5.

Barca will have Rafinha and Gerard D back next season. Both are quite talented. So if Masche returns as DM, they already have 3 "new" players in midfield. Gerard can be a winger though.
