Cholo & Atletico Kings of La Liga

Argentines have already clinched titles in Portugal, France, Italy and England and surely either way someone is going to add the Spanish crown into that list.

It was D-Day with Barcelona (Gerardo 'Tata' MARTINO, Lionel MESSI and Javier MASCHERANO) and Atlético Madrid (Diego SIMEONE, José SOSA and Emiliano INSUA) were going into battle on the last day of the season.

Barca took the lead through Alexis SANCHEZ at half time were looking on course to win the title but some team talk during the break brought Atlético to life; the reward being the equalizer through Diego GODIN.

MESSI on the other hand had a goal disallowed for offside. The result stayed as it is, and it was the Argentines on the away dugout’s day for celebration.

All I can say, as much I’m sad to see for MARTINO and MESSI to end the season empty handed but I think it was much more meaningful to watch SIMEONE and Atlético to win this. Whatever team talks that Cholo said to his team during the interval, not a surprise at all since we all know about his leadership values as a player.

For MARTINO who immediately step down as Barcelona's manager after the game, best of luck in the future. It was a tough assignment for him from Day 1 and I like to thin he did his best. Both  MESSI and MASCHERANO can now take a short break and start focusing on Brazil.
What does the future hold for Cholo now? Well I don’t know but certainly taking up the hot seat in managing Argentina should be one of them someday.
For now…

Congratulations to Diego SIMEONE, José SOSA and Emiliano INSUA!!!

@guled Romero was always a good goal keeper at club and national team level . The only concern is his lack of recent match practice. Hopefully with the recent matches he played in Monaco nd in the next 2 friendly Argentina matches he will be able to make it up nd retrieve his standards !

sabella is in a dilemma whether to select sosa or enzo perez. if he select sosa over perez for winning the la liga, it will be calamitous.

For all the negative argentina fans on this site please post somewhere else. Every team has problems, and I am willing to bet there are 31 other countries that would kill to have our problems.
Keep making your horseshit imaginary line ups, and keep hoping we lose so you can keep dreaming.

For the real argentina fans, our dream is about to come true. Adelante!

Who cares about Barcelona this season, it's a WC year. Messi won everything, and now he has an extra 2 weeks of training because of Tata with the NT.

I use to follow every Barcelona game when Messi was starting to shine. Now, I could care less, because at the end of your career, is all about the WC trophy and Messi wants to win this WC more than any person in this whole world.

Vamos Argentina!

Why Martino is an inexperienced coach when it comes to managing a European mega team. These are his coaching errors (some of them are rookier error):

1. I totally agree with Pep (our blogger). Martino keeps relying on the same line up that brought him no results which include: Pedro-Messi-Alexis upfront.

The definition of the word stupid: "keep repeating the same mistake and expecting different results."

2. Playing gung ho type of football: totally offensive with no defense. Definitely NOT tiki taka. Spain played tiki taka in WC 2010, when they faced the best counter attack team in the world in 2010, Germany in the semis, Spain did not look vulnerable defensively. That's tiki taka.

3. Challenging Alexis and Neymar to be more productive, which at the same time makes Messi happy. Messi needs 2 robins not 3 batmans upfront.

This season is the first season I saw ever since Messi played false 9 where Alexis (not Messi) often broke the offside trap to score himself. During Pep-Tito era, the only player who was "allowed" doing that was Messi.

4. Clash with the captain, Xavi. Xavi is decreasing, but a couple of months ago, he was complaining the rotation policy of Martino, which means Xavi wanted to play more. When Tata Martino rotated or even worse, benched Xavi, who is the engine of the team. It is like Tata is messing up the engine of the team.

5. Rotating players. He did this a lot in the middle of the season which resulted Barca losing some easy points.

6. Not giving a chance to Christian Tello. The guy always delivered when given a chance. Remember this guy scored an hattrick in a CDR cup on 3 Messi's assist. When Alexis and Pedro/Neymar combo did not work, Tata should have given Tello more minutes. Tello is a different animal. He's more speedy than Pedro, but is very underrated.

7. Rotating Dani Alves. Alves is extremely crucial to the team. He gives the most assist to Messi in Messi's career. Rotating him with Martin Montoya when Alves was healthy ruined the team.

8. Have no idea how to defend especially in Barca last 10 games. For example: Barca goal last night was purely luck. Atletico goal was purely an evidence that Barca did not know how to defend.

9. Set piece defend. Barca has always been weak in the air, but this year they are the worst in the aerial duel ever since they choose to be a midget team.

10. Give Messi a lot less involved in attack compared to Pep and Tito era. I read an article about this telling that this season Messi touches the ball a lot less than 1-3 years ago.

I know it is not entirely Martino fault. It's the board faults too by signing Neymar where it was not that necessary. It was the fault of the managements too, but again the 10 reasons above showed that Tata Martino is a ROOKIE when it comes to coaching in Europe.

Remember Europe is not South America. I do not guarantee the best European coaches like Pep or Mourinho to succeed in South America soil... and vice versa.

Ask Carlos Bianchi for this.

A)Barcelona needed at least two CB's under Tito but instead they sign both Song and Fabregas

B)Barcelona needed defenders they sign Neymarket..

Now tell me what in the world was Tata suppose to do with a team in decline and an average bench? Tata had a great start to la Liga with Messi flourishing as ever, then came Messi injuries again and everything went down hill from there on then..Tata saved Messi world cup career if you ask me, Tata allowed Messi to fly back to Argentina and recuperate from his injury. I doubt Pep and Tito would have gave Messi the opportunity to go back to Argentina in the middle of the club season..

When Tata join the club he ask for like 7 players to be sign, I can't remember all the names but he ask for Felipe Luis (early on before Atletico Madrid kick off there great campaign) and Vergini was requested by Tata also, yet the management turn a blind eye..At least Tata did not get trash by Bayern 7 -0 or lost every Liga games in the league to Real Madrid.

Barcelona could have sign Sakho for cheap the moment PSG wanted to offload him, he was for cheap so why not sign him..He could have been a stop gap measure nothing long term.

Barcelona could have sign Vergini on the behalf of Tata request.

Barcelona could have sign Marquinhos from Roma before PSG snatch him up..

Barcelona wasted 2 - 3 transfer window on Thiago Silva as if he was the only defender on the market..

Now this is what Barcelona should have done, they should have signed either Klose (Lazio) or Milito (Inter Milan) in the last window to add a different dynamic up top for the team..Both these players would have been cheap and would not cost more than 10 million..Tata was looking at these option but yet again management ignore Tata request...

Barcelona betrayed Tata and make the guy look like he did not know what he was doing..If Argentina does not win the world cup in Brazil this summer then I don't care how much goals Messi score for Barcelona or how many Ballon d O r he wins afterwards, I will be permanently tuned out from Barcelona by then..

Simeone and Atletico Madrid just saved La Liga, the league was going down the drains..Barcelona and Real Madrid rack up all the TV rights while all the other clubs suffer to keep hold of their players due to lack of revenues coming there way..I hope Simeone stay at AM for another 2 - 3 season because as soon as he leaves the club will go under again..

Argentina needs to win this year's WC, more than any other country. Argentina is pass due, and honestly, were in a silence desperation faze. We have to win the WC, no excuses. We are so over due, is getting ridiculous.

Most country that won the WC always had the best player that year.

Maradona, Zidane, Brazil Ronaldo, Pirlo, Xavi/Iniesta, and Romario...etc.

Compare to 2010,

Now we have Messi with more experience and a better coach, the same Fab4, but with 4 more years of soccer and WC experience, (huge plus), a younger and faster CB, a better RB, the midfield is better, but not great

Romero, and our LB issue. But all teams got some problem's.

Good thing is we have Andujar, and Orion, who, in my opinion, we do perfectly fine if Romero starts to panic.

Vamos Argentina!

The countdown to the WC is less than 30 days!!!!!

Yes, they did help make him become the player he is by first paying for his medical bills and then for honing his skills but Messi already returned that favor by helping Barcelona win all the trophies and the prestige of having one of their own win the Ballon d'Or 4 straight times and counting.

I cant predict the future but its no secret he wasn't happy about his situation this year. Injuries, what was said about him in the media, the so-called tax evasion issues, sharing the spotlight with you know who and the biggest of all, questioning his desire and whether he's still got it or not.

Super Kun would have been the perfect fit playing along side Messi and I find it very hard to believe that they didn't see that until recently.

Well at least we can say that La Liga is over and now Messi and co can concentrate to the WC.

I don't think Messi will leave Barca anytime soon. I can see him leaving Barca only when he will end his career. And that team is only Newells Old Boys.

Messi owes too much to Barca. Without Barca he would have been a 140 cm average unknown player today.

Barcelona's shot themselves in the head and not even the foot when they acquired the Chicken head and would have probably done more than what they did to get him....but you don't break the bank to buy a 2013 Mustang GT when you already have a Bugatti Veyron in the garage!

Tata came into a fucked up situation that already got worse as time progressed and HIM saying that they didn't need a defensive center back (probably out of respect for Puyol) didn't help his case either BUT and that's the best thing for ARG fans is that he didn't play La Pulga into the ground when many in his shoes would have.

I hate to say "I told you so" but I did say Neymar coming to town was the beginning of the end for Messi in Barcelona!

Messi never talked about money in public and then all of a sudden he wants to be the highest football player in the world when he always knew CHRISTINA got paid more and it never bothered him but to have your new rookie teammate who also happens to be Brazilian get paid almost twice as much is a totally different story.
They say the two get along, I say horseshit and time will show.

I am not a Barca fan.....but i think he is being made to be the scape goat for Barca's problems. I am an Argentina fan and i also see many of their fans blaming Macherano for many of their problems....and Barca has a history of letting their stars go out the back door...Maradona's words (not in exact format).
Tata inherited an already weak team and when was told he has to work with the squad he was given (plus neymar) when anyone with a football brain can see their team needed defensive reinforcements and some changes. When Bayern spanked them 7-0 nobody played Tito and the other guy who was in charge of the time...I don't care about Barca i care about the argentines and i hate to see unjustified blame go to people who don't deserve have defensive problems so you buy Neymar? Cryuf was right the purchase of Neymar will hurt them.......The world cup is almost here and i hope this nonsense doesnt affect Messi or Mascherano

Barca will need at least 3 new starters next season to replace:
1. Valdez
2. Alexis
3. Masche
4. possibly Xavi

And a bunch of back ups. I know the club has big plans.

How can Martino step down as manager? I can no believe he has had a bad season they were in the Copa rey final! Finished JOINT 2nd in the league and did well in the CL. It is so SICK that he was made to quit because they didn't win anything this season.

Posted on 5/18/2014 at 6:40 AM
If Simeone is a head of Argentina team right now, it will be 100 persen sure we will lift the world cup this summer. Too bad, our coach is arrogant and stubborn sabella who snub Cabalerro for NO REASON AT ALL.... I am sure Palegrini will wonder why Sabella chose Romero with no playtime at club over Willy. LOL

@ joji seriously man stop trolling, I don't know if you've notice but this site was setup as sort of a haven for people who love the albicelestes and love discussing the NT (or criticize it) without having to content with trolls.
You're more than within your right to criticize Sabella, his selections and even the players themselves but when you start stating your false opinions as facts, for example calling the fantastic 4 out of shape when the stats clearly say otherwise, one reaches the conclusion that you're trolling.

@travis calling Romero a clown is very unfair for someone who has served the NT very well for nearly 6 years, sure the guy has had his off days but what keeper hasn't!
I'm not happy with Romero's lack of match fitness and personally I wouldn't start him if I were Sabella but if there is one thing I know for sure is that Romero will go out there and give his all for the NT as he always has, the rest we're just gonna have to leave to faith because the guy is starting for team in the WC and there is nothing anyone can do about it.

Pipita has his off days like all strikers do but what sets pipita apart from the falcaos and the cavanis is the fact that he is a well rounded forward and not just a mere penalty poacher.
Even if Gonzalo is having off day scoring wise I'd still want him to be out there because he offers the team so much in terms of off the ball movement, physical presence and chemistry with kun, Di-maria and especially Messi (he assisted messi on atleast 4 occasions in recent times and messi reciprocated 5 times).

Im with you on Gago and kun's fitness issues but to be honest I'd rather have them for half a match or half the games than not having them at all because they both offer so much to the team and the whole team setup just wouldn't be the same without either or them.
With that being said just because these 2 may not be around doesn't mean that the albicelestes will crumble, far from it.
Remember that Gago only played 9 out of possible 14 WCQ games (I say 14 and not 16 because Sabella simply didn't call him up for the first 2 games so Gago couldn't exactly be blamed for being absent) and Kun played a measly 7 out of a possible 16 games yet Lavezzi and Biglia stepped up and the team managed just fine.
I feel that this team has the required depth to go far even if it could do with one or 2 more solid defensive players (Enzo perez anyone!).

Lastly I totally agree with on Rojo, I'm hoping that he'll shut up me in June but thus far I have zero confidence in the guy regardless of his seemingly hot form in Portugal (playing as a center back not a winger). And you're again right about Basanta being better, infact Basanta is much much better and if he were the LB for the team I would be breathing a big sigh of relief right about now, but we'll just have to wait and see.

Posted on 5/18/2014 at 4:50 AM
put messi kun pipita and dimaria together and you have the best attacking quad a world cup has seen in the past 30 years...

the reason the defends suffer has a lot to do with gago and playing with 4 attacking players...

gago spent more time healing his injuries than playing the last two years... and before that was notarious in real madrid, roma and valencia for his bad defending...

if we take gago out, and played masche and demichellis plus our back 4, the team will be ok... masche and demichellis are the only argentina duo that with their tackles can protect the back 4, by making up for the lack of defending from having 4 attackers...

romero sucks, but all goolies have saves, and so will romero...

Posted on 5/18/2014 at 4:44 AM
Yeah and Messi was flop of the match almost in every sports website. He could run little more than what he did last night!! Both Argentine for Barca were flop!!

Posted on 5/18/2014 at 4:31 AM
Congrats to Simeone. Can't wait to see you as coach of the albiceleste. I remember your promise: win everything as a coach I did not win as a player! Good times ahead!

Posted on 5/18/2014 at 4:28 AM
Firstly, congrats to CHOLO SIMEONE and AM. I hope after Sabella (hoping that he wins), he'll be man in charge of the defending the title. I just like the way AM played the whole season although I'm a cule. Anyone who remembers Cholo's knife between teeth attitude on the pitch? He has managed to transform his own playing style into his subjects, relentlessly hard hustling bunch. That's how passionately I want to see Argentina playing one day.

On Messi, I'm not worried at all. I saw him turn it on a few times on in small doses. That's when I saw that the guy is indeed fit but he's just playing smart. He doesn't want to risk himself. E.g. when Luis Phillipe hacked him down for a foul that was vintage Messi on the move. But at the same time that is the type of fouls he'd have to endure if he turns on. Remember this is the same guy who went to war with Barca when they didn't want to let him go to the Olympics. So I know that him being an Argentinian, no trophy is bigger the WC for all Argentine (and in this case,Brazilian) footballers, unlike European players who put clubs before country. I just hope that Messi continues in the same manner by taking it easy in the group stages in Brazil and focuses on setting up Higuain and Kun to do the main damage, then go full throttle himself in the KO stages. I just don't want to see the team arriving tired in the KOs becoz of a spectacle that was put on show in the preliminaries drained the players' energies. So Sabella must be very cautious and meticulous in his approach too to avoid giving too much away to the tactical analysts/spies of the other teams too early on.

Posted on 5/18/2014 at 3:14 AM
Messi has to be just like Maradona in 86...he just have to do it alone...

his team mates will not gonna help him much:
Romero is useless and a clown, enough said.
Rojo is a joke, even basanta or insua is better than him, hell..put sosa in his place and sosa will do so much better.
Gago is my favorite and could help Messi but will not be in his form + injury
Kun same with Gago + not a 90 minutes player unless if he's injury free.
Hig his on/off days is his problem although i still hope he would help Messi and give his 120%.
Maria work too hard with Madrid, it will cost him his energy in Brazil.
I hope Zabaleta Fede Garay and Mascherano will give their little life to protect the backline...remember we don't have a goalkeeper...only 9-10 players.

Vamos Argentina, they still can do it, with a little magic from Messi, that is.
