FAZIO & PAREJA Wins Europa League
With a total of four Argentines playing for both sides being involved in this Final, you can be sure that an Albiceleste player will walk away for the trophy.

So much has been said during the build up to this game about Benfica going to finally end the Guttmann cursed. I will admit that even I was leaning more towards them in winning this Final thus ignoring what Sevilla was capable off.

The Portuguese side started the game with Nicolás GAITAN and Ezequiel GARAY as the other two Argentines; Enzo PEREZ and Eduardo SALVIO were both suspended for the Final. GAITAN was brought down in the penalty box during the first half injury time but referee ruled out the penalty instead awarded a goal kick.

Both Federico FAZIO and Nicolás PAREJA were also instrumental in defense for the Spanish side throughout the game.  Especially for FAZIO who produced a man of the match performance.

The match ended goalless after 120 minutes and had to decide on a penalty shoot out. In the end, it was Sevilla whom emerge triumph thus, another heart breaking Final for the Eagles. Better luck next time!

Congratulations to both FAZIO & PAREJA on this success!

Netherland to finish first in their group, and meet Argentina in the semi final .. Argentina wins 2-1 and reach the final to beat Brazil 3-0

@el principe: I agree on two parts the most: both Tata and Alexis suck, and the part of Tata should have started to coach a small ambitious club in Europe first before a giant one like Barca. You know by now he's not a good planner.

Someone here also mentioned that Netherlands could reach the semi final and I also agree with him. Maradona says: "watch out for the Dutch"

I do think the kiddult kid has a weird obsession with Chile and Alexis...However Tata was not bad with Barcelona they topped Real Madrid with 1 real CB. Tata deserves a chance I can see him coaching in Italy next.

Few points here:

I feel bad for Tata because here is a man who doesn't have much europian experience and his first assignment was to coach Barcelona! I mean talk about trial by fire!
Also he came into a sticky situation, which was made worse by Barca's incompetent management.
With that being said, Tata himself isn't really blameless as he could've fought harder to reinforce the defense not to mention his strict adherence to tactics that were clearly paying no dividends (Bielsa paid for such rigidity in 2002 WC).
In the end though I am optimistic that Tata will get back on his feet because he is a good manager with WC and now top european experience under his belt.

@Richard, Argentina also made the finals in 3 different continents (in SA for the 78 win, in central america for the 68 win and Europe for the 1990 final).
I agree with you on not underestimating the Netherlands, they are after all a footballing giant and are always potential competitors and lets not forget that many dismissed the 2010 team before the WC and they made the final.
It is true that their squad (on paper atleast) isn't the strongest in world football with so much raw untested talent but lets not forget that VanGaal took a mostly raw, untested talent to the Champions league final and managed to knock out favorites AC Milan in the final so it's not a stretch to see him repeat the feat this year.
Personally I think the Dutch will top their group (that's right they'll top Spain and Chile!) and make it to the semis, could be wrong ofcourse but that's my prediction and I'll stick to it.

@Kid

Sorry man, but go ahead support your idols Tata Martino and Alexis. When Alexis scored, I remembered you and I read that you were praising him like crazy here.

But in the end, sorry but both of your men: the rook, Tata Martino and Alexis will not be there in Barca.

Go ahead support Chile as your second nation or Tata Martino as your favorite coach ever, but for me they both suck.

I am just telling you, you are a fan of history right? You keep saying European teams won't succeed in South American soils (I agree with this part). Now history will tell you, especially in modern football era that South American coaches will most likely fail in Europe if they don't have no/limited European football experience as a player or coach.

Those who succeed like Pellegrini, Simeone, Pellegrino spend half of their life in Europe.

Tata Martino should have started with smaller clubs in his European coaching like Catania or Pisa or Nottingham Forrest or something, not the mighty Barca.

Even the great Carlos Bianchi, one of South American most successful coaches ever failed in Europe when coaching Roma!

Romero looked really decent in the match yesterday vs bordeaux ... He had some tremendous saves ; after watching yesterday's second half I'm not worried anymore of his lack of match practice ... He has played in the last 3 games for Monaco nd conceded only 1 goal ...

There are a few points I would like to make.

First a request to the editors: please publish more posts in the build to the WC. Way too many posts are off topic (including this one). Call it Daily Talk, or D-25 until the first match, D-24 etc.

Second, several bloggers do not put things in perspective. Test matches are just what they are, nothing more, nothing less.

Third, writing off Holland based on the Ecuador friendly game is pretty ignorant. The Dutch were playing 10 domestic players and only one international star (Van Persie) because many others had commitments abroad (Robben was playing German Cup Final, Sneijder was securing CL football for Galatasaray, De Jong still has to play for Milan etc.) Van Gaal knows they lack quality and tried 5-3-2 for the first time with young players making their debut. If friendlies were anything to go by, both Brazil and Uruguay are in trouble because they could not beat Holland in Rio or Montevideo a few summers ago. And Argentina too because they could not beat non-WC qualifier Romania.

Fourth, Holland is the only team next to Brazil to make it to the final on three different continents.

Fifth, statistics can be read in many ways. For example, Argentina never won a WC or Copa America without long haired players in the starting line-up... Oh, oh

arg2014: Holland could only manage a draw with Ecuador in front of there home fans today or yesterday(whichever time zone you fall in)..Italy drew with Haiti 1-1 before the start of the confederation cup last year..Spain lost to South Africa..Why are you putting so much emphasis on friendly games, aren't you the same person who said friendly games don't matter when Argentina defeat teams like Germany and Italy under Sabella?

Kid, Lin, or whoever....sometimes I think you own this blog and try to dictate your personal opinion. I have the feeling that you own this website or the son of the owner. You went too far with your commands and often out of line with some bloggers on here including me.

So just let you know: Argentina as a team is building and in the process of establishing a modest team and nothing wrong with that as it is very promising. Other nations like Brazil, Germany and Spain are ahead of us and achieved enough in recent years and today they are stronger. We will get there someday but one step at a time......This is my dose to you so you won't get a heart attack next July.

We all have different opinions:

Some people wants Tevez on here and think he's better than some strikers called for WC, some other hates his guts and think he's a bad influence on the team with no work ethics. Some think Tata is genius and I believe he's not world class. In the end to each his own opinion....Even at home, you can't agree with your household members, so you want to agree with people from around the world with different backgrounds and cultures? This is a public blog....post what you think and speak up without insulting bloggers or attacking them personally. This website is to share news, opinions, feedback, criticism and analysis with full freedom. If you come across something you don't like, just skip.....that's what I do. Practice today or you will get a high blood pressure.

On a side note: Sabella is still green, with no world cup experience as a manager. It's hard to give him full credit today when Romania left him with no clue just a couple months ago. You haven't seen a thing yet, in the world cup, top managers will fight for the title as big players.....I say the top coach wins not the top player. Slow it down people and be humble. Our world cup qualifying campaign wasn't super hot....we drew, and lost against minor teams plus Brazil wasn't in the mix. Just wait, watch, and enjoy both entertainment and drama !!!

arg2014: You need to be more respectful to Tata Martino, most of your comments towards Argentine managers and players are often time too disrespectful. Tata walk into a declining Barcelona squad, he had little help from management with regards to signing new players so he had to content with an average bench consist of players like Song, Sergi Robert, Tello, Pinto, Montoya, Di Santos, Afelley etc. Barcelona had the weakest bench throughout Europe this season when it comes to big clubs..Barcelona still haven't figure out replacements for Milito, Abidal and Puyol for all this time..Mourinho was trophyless last season and trophyless again this season but he's still in the Chelsea job but I doubt you would have issue with the "special one" going trophyless for back to back season..Tata would have been successful at Barcelona if he had more time. There is a difference between being a fan of the Argentina NT and being a fan of Argentine football in general..I am a fan of Argentine football so I will always support its players and managers reguardless of where they coach or play. Barcelona will not always win, Real Madrid went trophyless last season, the same for Chelsea this season..You expect Barcelona to win every season because they have Messi?

"There is a time for laughter and there is a time for sadness", you will not always win. Hopefully for us Argentina fan it will be happiness and laughter at this summer world cup.

Vamos Argentina!!!!

I guess I will have to be the prick.

How can anybody criticize Martino? Do you even know anything about him? Of course you don't, because you do not even bother watching the Argentine Primera or any South American games. i mean, seriously, how can you call yourself a fan of Argentine futbol, when you neglect the league? If you did in fact watch it, you would know how Martino got his team playing. His time at Barcelona should not be looked as his failure, but the team and the board. Should there be any blame towards him? oOf course, all coaches need to take a share of the blame, but at the end of the day, what coach doesn't make mistakes?

All some people care about is European teams which they have ZERO connection to, or only care about the national team. Don't sit there and insult a manager that has done very well for himself, and a man who has conducted himself with class not only as a manager, a player but as a man. Gerardo Tata Martino, is a damn good coach, respect him.

@arg2014,

Tata is good coach. Man, have some respect.

This is the same coach who won titles in different country with different teams. This is the same coach who managed a weak team Paraguay and stunned the world with their superb play. This is same coach who won the Spanish SuperCopa. This is the same coach who won both home and away matches against Real Madrid. This is the same coach who lead Barcelona to 2nd spot in La liga above Real Madrid, many hails the best team in the world right now.

Atletico was the reason why Barcelona is out of Champions league and why they are not a Laliga winner this season. Mourinho has shown the world how to stop tiki-taka and now Simenoe shows is more accurately how to stop tiki-taka. Agree the fact that this Barcelona team is not good and Atletico are on superb form. Even Pep would have struggled with this weak team and against such an excellent team managed by brilliant Simeone.

If tata is a good coach, lets see what other big club will ever give him a shot. Just because he's an Argentinean, doesn't mean he must be good.....football experts analyzed his tactics ability and his weak personality of controlling the dressing room. Otherwise, me, you and your neighbour all can coach a big club like Barca and gain millions. Coaching is bigger than what we all think:

1) Game knowledge
2) Good analysis skills
3) Personality and leadership
4) Psychology skills
5) Determination, motivation, and everything ends with "tion".
6) Experience
7) Back up planning skills
8) Fitness Awareness
9) Being extremely competitive
10) Confidence

All these talks about Messi are nothing but panic. We need to relax. I have also been concerned often about Messi, but that was for his fitness. Which was quite a concern even 6 months back. But I don't doubt his capabilities ever.

If Lionel Messi is fit, he will produce his magic on any given day. He ain't Rip Van Winkle after a 20-year slumber which will make him forget his football. Even 3 months back, he produced a sensational performance in the el clasico. Doing it all alone.

Just pray all our boys are fit in Brazil. Don't worry if they are in form or not. Players like Messi just need enough match practice to strike form, he already has that!!

Aslam,
losing is a norm in futbol...but a coach has to tried...

tata's idea of trying was summed up by substituting xavi for cesc with 20 minutes.
so, you need to score a goal in 20 minutes that will bring you a league...

and his idea is to try the same thing that did not work for 600 minutes before...

the definition of crazy is trying the same thing under the same circumstances and expect a different result...

i dont care who he put, whether it was bartra, tello, or segi roberto, but with 20 minutes left you cannot sub xavi for desc, bcs in 500 min before, that did no work....

Tata Martino is a good coach...somehow he failed at Barcelona. I think he was under huge pressure from board and from the players. Players were not at all motivated just remembering what Pep said when he leaves 'i cant motivate them anymore..'!

It was the bad time for any coach to join Barcelona..a world cup year, not motivated players, the players they won almost everything recently, weak defense, no defensive signing, Injury to 'CB pair and GK,..etc

I want Tata joining in one of the good club in Europe. Spain or in Italy will be better place.Time will tell Barcelona's failure was not Tata's fault..!

After watching this season of football I'm glad Argentina is not playing tiki taka they are playing to their strengths which is a mix of possession and counter attacking. Possession game that suits Messi and co and counter attacking play that suits our wing plays and aerial number 9 in Higuain and Our hard working team. With this blend of tactical flexibility we will surely come out more effective and deadlier

To say Tiki-Taka is dead without messi is a pretty ignorant statement... Barca played with a system and messi is the best part of the system.. But he is still part of the system and not beyond it.. Players like Dani Alves,Xavi,Busquets,Iniesta,Pedro also gave tremendous contribution to barca's success over the years.. Messi is the most special one but he doesn't win anything Single-handedly.. In this day and age,, No single player can win anything single-handedly,, it only occurred in the 80s due to Maradona.. and he still needed some support from the defense whereas messi has legends playing with him all the time..

If Barca gonna buy fullbacks and playing this crossing the ball in the box they NEED aerial number 9 if they don't they are wasting their time with all these midgets. You can't try to play a certain type of game without the proper resources to make it work......

I think tata is afraid to make out f de box decisions.... Already he is criticised from everywehere, may b dnt wanted to lose dressing room too... That is a curse of coaching big clubs n huge superstars...

Barcelona have lost all the three trophies by a single goal. The main problem of Barcelona this season was they could not score goals. Otherwise Barca's defence has never been that good even at the time of Pep. I think Enrique should think of a solution of this problem. He should think of a way to create space for Messi. He should think of a way to regain possession faster once its lost. Barcelona's midfield was so reluctant to contribute in defence. He should check that too.

Messi single handily win the title for Barcelona last season and that is a fact..He slows down and now everyone panicing over one poor season for the club in general..Messi has been carrying this team on his shoulders for years now..I will never forget that game last season away to Derpotivo where Messi had to score 4 goals to secure Barcelona three points and they were many other games like away to Osasuna etc..Tiki taki is dead without Messi!!It will never look as beautiful without Messi!! Messi makes tiki taka look attractive to watch, no disrespect to greats like Xavi and Iniesta, just saying..

Dani Alves is a player that barca will miss a lot.. He played with his every might this season but it was out of his hands to stop barca from this disaster.. veterans like puyol, xavi, valdes will not play again for barca... it is certainly the end of an era in which the whole world witnessed Barcelona playing with the highest expression of artistry.. As a lifelong barca fan,, it is indeed a great torture to see this magical era 2008-13 end with such a pain..

I m not criticising messi but he is not the player who scores long range fanstastic goal ,i know its not his style but at critical stage u need to take shot at distance (against parking bus team).I m not great fan of ronaldo but he produces some supervb long range and accrobatic goals when team not able to break defence so messi need to do like that at some point.I m fully convinced he can do it.

Phew, glad the Spanish league is over and Messi gets to rest with unfinished business!

You can't help but think there is something going on in the Barca camp, or that the player ages no longer allow them to have the speed in attack like they had in the past - particularly in the last 20 mins. Without the speed and stamina, they are physically no match for AM. Interestingly, the average height of AM was 10cm more than Barca and when they compacted to defend their goal, nothing seemed able to get through.

I hope our NT does not get bossed out of midfield like so.
Now, we just need DiMaria to not do anything stupid and injure himself in the CL final.

I am more worried of Messi's attitude and response these past couple Months. He's been very off surely he scores goals nonetheless but he's been really off. And for World Cup these half hearted performances won't give justice to our chances of winning the World Cup. I pray that Di Maria, Gago, Aguero, Higuain, Mascherano comes EXTREMELY good in our offensive game because depending on Messi is a receipt for failure.. WE NEED EVERYONE TO PERFORM

Amlan I know, Tata should have bring in Bartra and allowed Mascherano to play in his normal position..With this bartra would have add more height in the desperate situation they find themselves in..Song brings nothing to Barcelona, playing with Song is like playing with 10 players..

Mascherano was the man of the match for Barcelona. Barcelona needs a player like him in Midfield. But so far it looks like he is heading for Liverpool.

Pradi I did not see any sign of Sosa stumbling with the ball today..A lot of Barcelona players today were worse than Sosa..If Sabella include Sosa I have no problem..

The thing with a lot of fans here is that they like too many flair players, that don't always win you games..Sosa is tough and gritty the type of players you want in your world cup squad..I don't mind Sosa inclusion in the 23 as long as Enzo Perez is also there..Sosa and Perez would make our team even more balance..

what a match... even after losing costa and turan,, atletico came storming in the second half which barca couldn't stop.. and then barca tried with everything they could to get that one goal,, messi scored but was offside,, but till the end atletico held their nerves to win a historic title.. in these season,, they were sensational going in attack and resolute in defense,, they Fully deserved this title and they also deserve CL..

It was a torture seeing barca play this season.. they didn't win anything because they BETRAYED their own ideology.. they started to put unnecessary crosses in the box which is never their style.. they played like this the whole season and so got their rightful result.. the drama surrounding Rosell,Neymar,Santos only made the situation worse coupled by stinging smear campaign by Madrid Newspapers against Barca and Messi.. Overall,, it was an absolute disaster of a season for barca.. I feel sorry for Tata because he is going to be the scapegoat for these failures but it is not entirely his fault..

I hope barca will come back stronger in the next season playing with their original philosophy.. Because that is the ONLY way for the greatest club in history to achieve any success.....

theAbNormalOne Pedro wasn't any better under Tito last season, quit blaming Tata for some of the lackluster performance by the players..I agree that Tata sometimes get it wrong, but the players? huh..The players showed no backbone all season..Pedro when he see goals he get selfish and shoot and if he does pass its not a good one..Fabrejoke is a waste of space..Xavi add nothing to Barcelona in a situation where they are trying to win, if Barcelona were defending a lead then Xavi on the pitch makes sense...

Messi is healthy, that's the most import thing..

Mascherano was Barcelona best player today and after seeing him stopping like 4 counter attack single handily goes well for us at the world cup..Mascherano was the only out there playing with heart..

Atletico Madrid deserves to win the title, they are the best team in Spain this season..

If Spain could get there TV rights sought out for all the teams in La Liga, then we would have this type of competition in Spain every season, unfortunately i don't see that happen..

@Lin.Actually the problem is not with Pedro,it's with Tata's tactics.I think Messi plays great when played with:
1.A left forward who stays near to the penalty box and always available for a one-two or can unleash with a through ball.
2.A pacey right winger who is ready to track back but should work more hard even covering right wing back.
3.An attacking midfielder who stays near to Messi in midfield and closely follow upto the opposition penalty box.He should be extremely trick one to create one-twos with Messi.
But the current tactics makes Pedro confused since Alexis also tracks back and he's not certain should he track back or should he stay?
So a 4-3-3 which Pep so successfully applied.Add Xavi to this equation.
@Now do you people feel something of F4???

Barcelona are mediocre in midfield and worse in defense.
