Argentina and World Cup debutants

Argentina's first match at the 2014 World Cup will be against World Cup debutants Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Argentina knows a lot about playing World Cup debutants. In 2006, two of the three teams in Group C with Argentina were making their World Cup debut. The Ivory Coast and Serbia and Montenegro (formely Yugoslavia).

In 1998, all three teams in the group were making their first appearances at the World Cup. Japan, Jamaica and Croatia (formely Yugoslavia).

In 1994, it was against Greece.

Worth noting that Argentina won all of those matches.

I don't think he will call Demichelis. Even if he does that, Demi wouldn't be in the final 23 for sure. We do not need so many central defenders (Garay, FF, Basanta, Campagnaro, Otamendi)

chile is nothing without Loco Bielsa he made them play . these players are not as good as last world cup. Colombia and Uruguay are the dark horses for the world cup and are awesome in south America behind Argentina and Brazil

Not only ticket sales, fans present throughout the towns and locals will be crucial too...Argentina will feel like they're in Buenos Aires both in and out of the stadiums and that's the good thing about the world cup being held in South America.

I read that the only reason why Sabella postpones it is sue to the injury situation. Augusto is out for 4 weeks according to ole. Banega is fine. So Sabella is waiting to see if he needs the "31st" player to replace Augusto in the final 30.

Anyway we should have known Sabella by now. He has a habit of waiting the very last minute when announcing the squad. He always did that in WCQ.

Hi every body,
It has been since I wrote for the last time but I was following your news, nice comments and discussions.

In my

(a)Romero, Andujar, Orion.

(b) Garay, Fede, Otamendi, Basanta, Lisandro
Zabaleta, Peruzzi, Campagnaro, Rojo

(c) Mascherano, Gago, Biglia, Banega
Maxi, Di Maria, Ricky, Sosa, (Augusto if he can be fit)
(c) Messi, Aguero, Higuain, Lavezzi, Palacio

This is the last squad which has been chosen for Romania Friendly, 4 players will be added or 5 if Augusto cannot be there.

I think they will not be out from the following:-

(d) Coloccini, Enzo Perez, Gaitan, Salvio, Di Santo, Barcos, ZARATE and may be TEVEZ or KRANEVITTAR.

May be we can see one surprise and may be not, but the one thing we should agree together is to dream and hope, to feel like we are in the stadium behind our ARGENTINA whoever is playing, to be one HEART.

VAMOS ARGENTINA

Spain definitely the top notch out there . . . awesome squad . . . could make 2 A-Class squads out of ‘em. Del Bosque will have a torrid time to throw out 7. It will best for Spain to throw out the elders in the squad than the traditional way of throwing out youngsters. Im a great fan of Xavi but it will best for the team to drop him, Xabi, Villa, Torres, Albiol and go ahead with the young blood. They will loot . . . u will see. Terrific team.
.
Btw, many of my frenz here do not know ¾ of the Argentine squad!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We are a laughing stock now, hope we are not after July 13th!!!!!!!

Thanks for that Spain list Amlan!

Good GOD Johnny, you are right. That Midfield of theirs is very good indeed on paper. I won't be surpised if they go 3 GKs, 8 Defenders, 9 Midfielders, and 3 FWs for their final 23 , thanks to their formation! That being the case: Ander Iturrespe and Thiago Alcantara might get the drop, and only 1 of Mata/Koke get the nod. 1 of Albertno Moreno or Abilol loses out from defense. In strike : it will be Costa, Negrado and 1 of : Torres/Villa/Llorente!

Hola amigos!

Everyone must be waiting for the 30-man preliminary list to be announced by Sabella today. Definitely quite a significant day, a great precursor to the world cup ahead. Just a request - I kindly ask everyone not to get too over-excited nor upset about the selections. We all have our favourites and yes we'd love for all of them to be part of the squad. Have a little faith in Sabella and his methods. The man has guided the NT through a pretty grueling campaign , and a bunch of good friendlies. More often than not, our team has fared well and come out on top. We think we know more than him. We don't. (well outside of the GK position really :-) )

This guy predicts the winner of the World Cup correctly from 1970-2026 but the 2010 version. They say he is a fortune teller of Brazil named Jucelino Da Luz:

This is his prediction:
2014 winner: Argentina, runner up Brazil, 3rd Holland
2018 winner: Brazil, Italy, Argentina
2022 winner: Italy, Holland, Brazil
2026 winner: France, Germany, Brazil

Lin higuain and aguero are not injured. Fernandez is not a sub plus when we played colombia he held falcao. Yes willy should start ahead almost every fan agrees. The world cup can be won our defense is good, it would be better if rojo stays back. Zabaleta is world class so is garay, and fernandez is good. Our midfield isnt bad. Di maria and mascherano are really high quality players, biglia is one of the best tacklers in serie a. Obviously our forwards arent even considered a problem by most logical people, unless its an extremely negative person.

Nothing concrete until tomorrow, but el principe got the 30 man roster correct, which I heard from tv. Sabella is not sure about the injuries from our player's, so he might wait until the deadline for the 23 man roster.

Los defensores que seguramente estarán son Pablo Zabaleta (Manchester City), Federico Fernández (Napoli), Ezequiel Garay (Benfica), Marcos Rojo (Sporting Lisboa), Hugo Campagnaro (Inter), José Basanta (Monterrey) y Nicolás Otamendi (Atlético Mineiro).

Los volantes seguros son: Javier Mascherano (Barcelona), Fernando Gago (Boca Juniors), Ever Banega (Newell˜s), Angel Di María (Real Madrid), Lucas Biglia (Lazio), Maximiliano Rodríguez (Newell˜s) y Ricardo Alvarez (Inter).

Los delanteros que se dan por seguro: Lionel Messi (Barcelona), Sergio Agüero (Manchester City), Gonzalo Higuaín (Napoli), Rodrigo Palacio (Inter) y Ezequiel Lavezzi (París Saint Germain).

Los otros ocho saldrían entre:

Defensas: Gino Peruzzi (Catania), Lisandro López (Getafe) y Fabricio Coloccini (Newcastle).

Volantes: Augusto Fernández (Celta), José Sosa (Atlético de Madrid), Enzo Pérez (Benfica), Lucas Romero (Vélez), Matías Kranevitter (River), Fabián Rinaudo (Catania)

I think messi himself opted to drop deep or stay wide to avoid rash challenges... If it was anybody else other than tata, messi would have get criticised public... Luckily for messi n we fans n unlucky for tata, he reached barca this season... Its purely because of unproffessional approach from management barca are in this situation now...

Barcelona, arsenal n liverpool battle for rojo...
Marseille interested in banega...

If I have to give Tata credit, it would definitely be in the case of him not playing Messi into the ground like any other coach on the hot-seat would have done.

Tata did as much as he can but I blame him on the messi situation he changed the team from one wich messi is central to the attacking to isolating messi and relaying on Sanchez and Pedro that is foolishness, messi still did well and has more then 40 goals despite missing many months but barca suffered becouse messi used to create many chances and pull opposition players out of their line , every team base their attack on their super star nothing new but tata acted smart and he failed , he is good coach but not for barca

Lin- You are playing after the final whistle man. Sabella has already made up his mind and the additional 7 will be there as injury backups then sent back home if all are fit!
Willy and co, could make xbox fifa 2014 list and start right away!

Looks like Tata is going to be made a scapegoat of Barcelona's failure this year. They had literally no decent central defence and a old keeper for the last 2/3 months when they played most of the crucial matches. The midfielders and wing backs have been so reluctant to defend. I have been watching Barcelona for eight years now. I have never seen them giving so less effort in their defensive duties. Despite so many problems, Barcelona still managed to get out of UCL and Copa by the margin of only one goal. I think Tata tried with his heart as he always tells that how much respect he has for this club and their philosophy. But there is something rotten in this Barcelona camp.

I don't know if it is entirely Tata's fault that Barcelona played bad on the last half of this season but I really liked how Tata handled the press under immense pressure with politeness and without blaming any player. Do any of you guys know what is Tata's next destination?

Willy Cabellero should be ahead of our two useless goalkeepers Romero and Andujar..Otamendi, Really Sabella? This world cup is not looking good guys, it have disaster written all over it..Fernandez is a sub for Napoli, what can he do at the world cup? Higuain and Aguero are both injured, Sabella should try some new alternatives, how about Iturbe, Scocco and Tevez? Why not choose Ansaldi over roho, this guy is way too raw..Gago is plastic, we need to replace Gago with Biglia and also Gaitan in for Banega..

Do you remember the time, before Maradona announcing his list to SA?

No one dared predicting the full list like most of you are doing now! And hell, when it got revealed it was almost 50% shocking as hell!

Alejandro Sabella is now on the grounds of Ezeiza and today would give the list of 30 players for the world Brazil 2014, for which has run until tomorrow. The technician of the selection last details and, according to a source from the AFA, the list would be published before the 18.
Biggest surprises are nowhere. It is a list which is expected and the players that will be safe long time form the basis of Sabella in the selection, more who will fight for recent quotas of the 23, which will be defined to make ends meet.
At a quick glance, there are 21 players who will be safe in this list and also the final of the World Cup. Surely, a fight will be given two spaces between those who complete the in 30. It is almost certain that Carlos Tevez will be.

Flyers: Javier Mascherano, Lucas Biglia, Fernando Gago, Ever Banega, Angel Di Maria and Maxi Rodriguez.
Forwards: Lionel Messi, Sergio Aguero, Gonzalo Higuain, Ezequiel Lavezzi and Rodrigo Palacio.

Lin, i dont care what france did before... each world cup is different... wining or losing a world cups before does not guaranteed success or failure... we have it won in 24 years, but i hope and think we will winning this time... and I based this, not on argentina's history, but on us having sabella and messi masche dimaria and kun, who are extraordinary.

but for your info, since 1986 France has beaten Brazil all four times they have played official games, two times with zidane on the field and 2 times without him...

it is true that france has been chaotic since 06... in its history, whenever france has had a decent leader good results has followed...today their coach is deschamps. their captain and leader in 1998, 2000....as a coach he has been good too. franhce has good players and leaders, and i would not be surprise if the eliminate brazil and we play them in the finals...

This notion that Luis Enrique is what Messi needed is just a joke..Before the Messi injury last year, Messi was in great form scoring a hat trick against Valencia in the span of 15 minutes and scoring hat trick against Ajax during the UCL, at this point Messi was in prime position to win the BDOR for a 5th time, then came the injury which change everything..Its not like Messi struggled under Tata to score goals, he's far ahead of everyone at the club this season..There were a lot of negative off field lies going on about Messi while he was out injury, and the Barcelona board failed to protect Messi image during that period..Messi had an average team around him this season and it showed, I don't see what Enrique would have done better with this current Barcelona squad..After the injury Messi main focus was on the world cup, he himself said everyone at the club was thinking about the world cup.I would love if Messi moved on from Barcelona..

@guled Thanks, lets hope Willy Cabellero gets to be our number one..

Campagrano did not play much this season due to injuries but every time he represent Inter Milan he always look solid..The last game he played was strong against Napoli..

One player outside of la masia that I would want Barca to buy is Mateo Kovacic (Inter). I have been watching this guy. He is a real talent. He came to Inter when he was too young, but he starts looking great.

I think he's more special than Marco Veratti. Kovacic can be the next Xavi.

One positive piece of news for Barca fans, however, is that the Celta coach is keen to build a new sporting project around Messi, with the Argentine as the focal point in a side which will aim to play to the strengths of the four-time Ballon d'Or winner, who has endured a difficult season in 2013-14 because of injury and a dip in form compared to his brilliance in previous campaigns.

http://www.goal.com/en/news/12/spain/2014/05/12/4813371/luis-enrique-set-to-coach-barcelona?ICID=HP_HN_1

That means Barca is rebuilding and there will be a lot of new players next season.

Since France top their group back in 1998 when they host the world cup, its been down hill in the group stage since then although they made the 2006 world cup finals solely because of Zidane..

France 2002 went home in group stage.

France 2006 second in group stage

France 2010 went home in group stage..

So what's with the hype around France? This French team will under perform at this year world cup, don't be surprise at another group stage exit..Ecuador like all the other teams in the group have as good as a chance to top their group

When will they announce the Argie world cup team 23 man squad? I hope Willy Cabellero get selected ahead of Romero and Andujar.

Among these teams who debuted against Argentina, Greece went onto win Euro cup, Croatia won the third place in 1998, Japan has become a good team and Ivory Cost is also a good footballing nation. If I am right, our match against Ivory Cost was not an easy one, still we managed to win, thanks to Ayala and co.
There is a good chance for the football debutants against Argentina to be a good footballing nation in the future!

Ecuador qualify for the round of 16 back in 2006 alongside the host Germany..Poland was suppose to be the team that qualifies with Germany and they failed to given that it was basically an home game against Ecuador for Poland playing in Germany..You guys need to open your eyes, the world cup is in South America, quit looking at who play for who, at whichever club..Ecuador went to Lisbon and defeat Portugal soundly not too long ago..ESPN has Ecuador winning their group over both France and Switzerland.

Guys, beleave me, Equador won't qualify to play-off's. They are in WC mostly because of their big home advantage, Switzerland has VERY talented and good team, who won their European group, and will qualify for sure!

Equador is only south-american team, who will not qualify, I think.

What's this talk about ''park bus'' teams? Argentina have beaten Uruguay back in 2011 for the 2014 WCQ, who played with everyone in their penalty box until we scored..Argentina also defeat Greece back in 2010 who was also a ''park bus'' team..Portugal, France, Ecuador, Switzerland, Honduras, USA, Ghana,Germany, Belgium, Russia, Algeria, Korea, Chile, Spain etc are all potential knockout stage opponents for us, none of these teams are park bus imo..The problem that Argentina had over the past years during world cups and other major tournament is that they tend to panic whenever we go a goal down but this has change under Sabella to some extent, we went a goal down against two tough teams away to Colombia and Bolivia and Sabella team showed character in the situation and fought their way back in the games..All this talk about Argentina cant break down ''park bus'' teams is absurd..When was the last time a team ''park the bus against us'' and win? Since 2011 - present we have beaten Portugal, Switzerland,Germany,Brazil (twice),Italy and, Bosnia all teams currently at the world cup..

Willy Cabellero need to be on the team, Sabella please put pride aside and select Willy..We can't have both Romero and Andujar on the plane going to Brazil..And is Orion really the best keeper in the Argentine domestic league? I doubt it..

Worth noting, Argentina didn't past the quarterfinals any of those years, and in 94 got knocked out in the first knockout even.

We are expected to win the group. Anything less is grossly underperforming. The knockouts are worrying, given the trouble the team has against teams that park the bus.

Haha, Johnny!

I remember listening to an interview a few years ago with the captain of that Jamaican team of 1998. He said playing against Argentina really was boys against men and they were lost out there. He said they were in awe of Argentina.
