Farewell El Pupi!

It was the moment which I never realize would ever come as for all my life I’ve never seen him tiring down, always running with full energy up and down throughout the time when he is on the pitch. But then again, for every story has to have an ending; for Javier ZANETTI playing career, that ending was today.

“ZANETTI is an Inter legend, it's weird to think we'll no longer see him out there playing or training, he's emblematic of this club” coach Walter MAZZARRI said before the match.

The buildup for this match during the whole week was almost as if it was a festival and not to forget, it was also the last time for Walter SAMUEL and Diego MILITO in a Inter shirt with also the possibility of Esteban CAMBIASSO leaving the club in the summer.

But today, it was all about the man who has served the club with loyalty & dignity for past the 2 decades; with over 850 appearances for the club, winning 5 Scudetto, 4 Coppa Italia, 4 Supercoppa Italia, a UEFA Cup, a FIFA Club World Cup and the ultimate one, lifting the Champions League in 2010.

Not bad for someone who started as a bricklayer for his father’s company!

ZANETTI started from the bench today and Inter didn’t got off to a good start with Giuseppe BIAVA putting Lazio ahead within 2 minute but goals from Rodrigo PALACIO (who scored twice) and Mauro ICARDI  (he dedicated his goal to ZANETTI).

But the main agenda of the night arrived in the 52nd minute when the entire San Siro was on their feet to welcome to ZANETTI, as JONATHAN makes way for him.

HERNANES wrap things up in the 79th minute & Inter finished the night with a 4-1 win, ensuring that it was going to be a winning send off for their captain marvel.

I must admit that it wasn’t easy for me to write this article as I’m still very emotional (with a little bit of tears flowing down) when watching this game.

Nevertheless let us take this moment to celebrate the man who in my opinion has given everything for both club & country.
Gracias El Pupi! Grazie Il Capitano!

Inter will not release El Capitano, They still need Zanetti to rebuild the team and grow with the youths. My humble tribute for Javier ZANETTI, Salute and hat-off

This one of the best defenders ever to come out of Argentina along side with Cabezon Oscar Ruggeri. Zanetti is a great player great person. He was robbed by not getting picked in the 2006 world cup. 2010 also was a very bad decision my Maradona. He was not favorite in Argentina for some reason. I wish him the Best. Eres grande Pupi Zanetti

guled: WE ARE ARGENTINA and the semi final is not a success, only winning the world cup will be a successful tournament.
never do i think its ok if we finish 3 or 4 or 5 etc, nothing but winning the w.c is acceptable and if you are an Argentine football follower you will 100% understand.

when sabella said "im aiming for the semi" he was trying to take pressure of the team, take away the favorites tag that is a curse for many teams over the years.

Agr1985: it does not matter what sabella does and as with past managers the only pass mark that can be given is if he wins the world cup.

any thing else is a fail and that is the nature of the world cup as its win it all or nothing matters.

People should give sabella some respect for what he has done before he came in messi was a shadow and we had no style of play we have come a long way. I terms of messi he looks good to me while barca on the whole has been so tata is a total waste tatically he is so poor he has played vs packed defences whole season and has offered the team no options just crossing to no one in particular which make messi play like a centre forward not utlizing his strenghts with argentina messi uses all his abilities which you will see in the world cup barca is not perfect but tata has made them worse don't expect them to beat atleti either because tata will provide the team with no options just depending on individuals. Argentina will at least be in the semis.

@mmh007: No, I don't care for Barca at all. I didn't said Messi was mediocre!! I said he was best player for barca today, but might not excellent.

I'm not concerned that he has lost his usual form this season. I'm concerned if he would be able to re-gather himself coming worldcup and there is nothing wrong with this. Even many of the best football minds of the world are concerned if he can win this for Argentina this time. Like best students are more concerned for result than others. All I saw it was an important match today. Messi tried but he couldn't deliver as much as he wanted. Well, I take this for La Liga, but I won't take this for World Cup. Some are sure that he will rise to the occassion, I'm fine with that. I too believe that but with little concern considering he had a tough season.Being excellent may not be enough for Argentina, he has to be beyond that.

I know that wanting Caballero on this team is futile...But I hope that if Sabella is replaced, the next manager in charge will take him, hopefully it will be Simeone. I understand that Tevez has locker room issues, though he is a better player than Palacio and Lavezzi put together, but Caballero is a quality leader off the pitch and on and we could drastically upgrade our squad.

@Juanma: By no means Messi was mediocre. He was very good, if not excellent.

But yes, sometimes I expect him to do something on his own, to step up while the whole team is not functioning, especially in a crucial match like this. That special thing makes one one of the best ever. But, yeah, I know I'am over expecting because he's been through lots of things both on and off the field this season. But when it comes to a crucial world cup match, I expect him to do something even if the whole team do not function well. Because he is Messi. Because he isn't CR, nor Suarez nor others, because i think he's best ever. And we call someone one of the best ever who can perform against the wind and when it needed most.

Welcome Juanma, people who he say has been mediocre or lost his touch or whatever can go......... fill in the blanks.

Messi finally figured that he doesn't need to sacrifice for a team that forgot what he has done for them.

Who gives a damn about La Liga when the WORLDF CUP is less than a month away and we need our best player unharmed?

What I was afraid of happened, now he is forced to play in a must win game against the dreaded AM.

I hav no worries about messi... In open spaces he is holding de ball and is dribbling well and is looking for key passes... What he is not doing now is his trade mark runs into the box when team needed a break through... His approach at crowded area clearly tells that he is worried of nasty challenges... Let this season go like this, barca can come back next season...

After Athletico match commentetor said, "And Willy, you know, can play any team in the world." He forgot to say, "except Argentina."

Messi tried and still played very well, perhaps best player on the pitch for Barca but looks like lost his those magic, winning a game single handedly on his own. At some point I subconsciously wanted Iniesta to see more of the ball and relied upon him more to do something out of the box. I have no doubt Messi will play better for Argentina but I start doubting whether he can pull those magic like a best ever footballer which can be needed at some stage of WC. He looks like a very, very good player but no way best ever. We know all about his injuries and he should've got bact his rythm by now but clearly he hasn't. Hope this loss is not something permanent.

Barcelona made Messi look worse? or Messi made Barcelona look worse this season? Two equally good
question to ask and I think answar is, both.

If anyone say I should add Fabregas to the list, I won't argue either.

First time posting here, I'm shocked to read some supposed "fans" calling Messi mediocre.

It's so obvious that Barcelona as a team has been figured out, they cannot create a decent chance for Leo against teams that drop numbers behind the ball.

You can't expect Messi to take the ball and dribble the whole team, he needs service, like any other striker.

Tata has restricted Messi, he doesn't have the freedom to drop deep, he has to wait for the final pass to come, and Barcelona struggles to create it. Messidependencia

Tata Martino should have trusted Tello. Tello is a decent player. When I saw him for the first time 2-3 years ago, I thought he was the next Di Maria. Tello's dribbling and speed will give Barca different option.

Pep is the only coach who knows that Tello is a young underrated special player. Even Tito did not really use him, just Pep.

If Tata know that the trio of Pedro-Messi-Alexis did not work out, he must do something instead of stick with it. It's been like 5 games in a row where the trio looked horrible.

The lucky thing is Atletico failed to win. So Barca will still need to beat them in the final match. It will be the second chance for Barca after failing to beat them at home in CL.

I think we'd see park the bus Atletico again next week.

Btw guys, 24 - 48 hours from now is the deadline of the list of 30!

An interesting article from Marca.

"England need a Messi"

An interesting song centred around Leo
Messi has been released in the UK. The
song speaks about the theory of what
would happen at the coming World Cup if
Leo played for England. "We'll give you
Las Malvinas, and Thatcher's body too,
just give us the Messi-ah, and maybe Kun
Agüero too".

We've got Stevie G, Jackie Wilshie, and
thankfully, no JT, Wayne Rooney and two
Dannys, but what we need is one Messi.
We've got Cahill, Carrick, Bainsey, Ross
Barkley and Frank Lampey Sterling,
Smalling, wait and see, but what we need
is one Messi", the song goes. In the last
verse, the song criticises the England
manager: "If Messi was an Englishman,
and Hodgson was an Argentine!!!"

I loughed a lot after read this article. England has no believe on themsef!? LOL :)

I always thought about a image in which Zanetti was holding a worldcup. It was even in my mind on 2013. Really would have liked that.It would have been a farewell to Zanetti and whole football world.
Regarding City win. Its a normal thing for me and I hope Pellegrini continue as coach since it will merit Argentina a lot(Argentina favouritism of Pellegrini).
@el.Principe: Pochettino would be a fantastic coach for Tottenham(Lamela). And also he have proved already that he can work within a system that every player performs better. And he have a high tempo attacking football.

Congratulations to Man City.. they fought with all their might and they have won it again after 2012... Aguero wasn't at his fearsome best this season but others covered up for him..

Yes city played attractive counter attacking football but as long as Barcelona is in my DNA,, i can never truly love that type of football.. but i do agree that barca's style has become outdated and this dynamic way is the new trend.. but when it comes PURE footballing artistry,, nobody i mean NOBODY comes even close barca 2009-11(except brazil 1982 maybe)..

I so dearly hope that barca will retain their title...

I became captain of all the teams i played for and now as a coach....every time i would think about slipping i would think....Javier Zanetti would never do that!
When he was omitted from the Argentina squad those two world cups my heart was broken....up until this day no proper tactical explanation was given by either coach both had some superstitious BS and i hate that we were robbed of seeing this guy on the world stage:( great player...for me my best player ever ..(For me)

He is the best Right Back I have ever seen. He was the most complete Right Back I have seen. He was the one player who has never frustrated me. He was one of the players whom I was always proud of for his being an Argentine. He was the most important player Argentina had after Maradona. I don't think that I can see a player like him again. The saddest part of the story is that he would have been a World Cup legend (though he may already be one) like Pele and Maradona, had he been selected to the NT in 2006, and 2010 World Cups when he was at the peak of his career. Thanks to our criminal minded coaches! Just like he saluted his inter fans, he will be saluting his Argentine fans saying: "Thanks to you all, I will always love my Argentina, despite whatever it had done to me".
I can't talk about him without getting emotional.
Salutes to the great master!

My favourite player in the history of the game.

Became an Inter fan because of him (as well as Milito's notorious goalscoring exploits).

It's actually shameful that he was omitted from the WC squads in 2006 and 2010. Can't believe Otamendi started over him under Maradona at South Africa.

He deserves to be in the company of players like Pele, Rivera, Zoff, Maldini, Cafu, Ronaldo, Cannavaro, Buffon etc who have played in 4 world cups. Easily one of, if not the greatest RB in the history of the game, let alone in the history of the Albiceleste.

Some River fans even have the nerve to say that Hernan Diaz was better than him, which is absolutely ludicrous imo.

One of the game's true gentleman. And one heck of a player.

It still saddens me that he missed out the 2006 and 2010 World Cups. After all that he gave to the national team, he deserved far better than that.

But now is a time for only positive thoughts.
