It was the moment which I never realize would ever come as for all my life I’ve never seen him tiring down, always running with full energy up and down throughout the time when he is on the pitch. But then again, for every story has to have an ending; for Javier ZANETTI playing career, that ending was today.
“ZANETTI is an Inter legend, it's weird to think we'll no longer see him out there playing or training, he's emblematic of this club” coach Walter MAZZARRI said before the match.
The buildup for this match during the whole week was almost as if it was a festival and not to forget, it was also the last time for Walter SAMUEL and Diego MILITO in a Inter shirt with also the possibility of Esteban CAMBIASSO leaving the club in the summer.
But today, it was all about the man who has served the club with loyalty & dignity for past the 2 decades; with over 850 appearances for the club, winning 5 Scudetto, 4 Coppa Italia, 4 Supercoppa Italia, a UEFA Cup, a FIFA Club World Cup and the ultimate one, lifting the Champions League in 2010.
Not bad for someone who started as a bricklayer for his father’s company!
ZANETTI started from the bench today and Inter didn’t got off to a good start with Giuseppe BIAVA putting Lazio ahead within 2 minute but goals from Rodrigo PALACIO (who scored twice) and Mauro ICARDI (he dedicated his goal to ZANETTI).
But the main agenda of the night arrived in the 52nd minute when the entire San Siro was on their feet to welcome to ZANETTI, as JONATHAN makes way for him.
HERNANES wrap things up in the 79th minute & Inter finished the night with a 4-1 win, ensuring that it was going to be a winning send off for their captain marvel.
I must admit that it wasn’t easy for me to write this article as I’m still very emotional (with a little bit of tears flowing down) when watching this game.
Nevertheless let us take this moment to celebrate the man who in my opinion has given everything for both club & country.
Gracias El Pupi! Grazie Il Capitano!
