Javier ZANETTI to retire at the end of season
Javier ZANETTI will retire at the end of the season.

Veteran, leader, legend and captain Javier ZANETTI will be retiring at the end of the season at the age of 40. ZANETTI joined Inter in 1995 and has played over 850 matches for the club. He played a record of 145 matches for Argentina. A professional both on and off the pitch, you will not hear anyone say one bad word about him.

He was criminally left out of the 2006 and 2010 World Cup, despite winning the treble with Inter in 2010. Once he retires, he will become Inter's director.

Thank you for everything, Javier.

Vicky, u summed it all up about Zanetti. I too loved the champion. But i dont know to write like u do. Zanetti was one of 'best that time forgot'.
.
I remember watching the 98 match where he scored from set pièce...
.
Pekerman did foolish in omitting him. Maradona was a joke of a coach anyway.
.
Sabella should have taken him for a def mid role subbing mascherano.
.
Legend........

My humble tribute to Javier Zanetti- One of my all time-fav players :
Being Zanetti

1990-1994 were strange times to be an Argentine fan in Asia - where media coverage was minimal back in the day. Italia 90 and the aftermath was a bitter pill to swallow, with ignorant casual fans just labeling the entire team dire, boring, embarrassing, bunch of cheaters, and a negative squad in all. Hardly much was spoken about the Copa wins of 91 and 93 in these parts due to lack of media coverage.

USA 94: With Argentina scraping through into the WC thanks to us edging Australia over 2 legs. Some world class individuals were there : a young Batistuta, one Mr. Redondo who'd redefine the defensive midfielder's role. Maradona was reinstated to the squad, hoping to ignite some passion and inspiration. After starting brilliantly, Argentina, burdened by the doping scandal, and crashed in the 2nd round, with nothing to show, and more ill-will earned.

It was after this time, and these circumstances that young Javier Zanetti made his debut for Argentina under Paserella.

What you got with Zanetti on the pitch was heart, leadership, consistency, skill, and fair play. How about this amazing statistic? Number of Red cards for Zanetti in his Inter career : 1. On the pitch, Zanetti would rarely ever mistime a tackle, and very rarely make cynical or time-wasting challenges. In fact I don't think Zanetti has gotten more than 6 yellow cards in 1 season!

As a defender, he had the pace and power to keep up with the best of them, even late into his career. I remember games against excellent players where he had kept them ineffective so often.

Going foward too , Zanetti was fantastic. I remember his goal against England in 98 so fondly, a result of a smart free-kick! I remember numerous Zanetti runs into the box, cutting in, gracefully going past defenders like a ballet dancer. Quite simply put, he has been one of the best RBs ever , and also one of the best footballers of his generation.

It was an absolute sin that Zanetti was ignored by not 1, but 2 different managers for 2 different world cups, when he was at the peak of his career. I still shudder thinking about it. We all talk about getting upset with Sabella not giving a chance to players like Gaitan, Perez , Pastore, Fazio, Musacchio etc. Now think of Zanetti- undoubtedly one of the world's top RBs at the time, immaculate player, excellent fitness levels, passionate, and inspirational. It's not even a comparison really. More shocking are some suggestions that he was excluded because he as considered a "jinx" to Argentina's chances! It is a good thing at least that he has achieved everything as a player and captain at club level. I truly hope the AFA gives him a farewell befitting his legendary status.

But most of all, Zanetti is one of the genuinely NICE guys in football. How often do you get to say that? In an era where most players would find new and strange ways to waste their lives, Zanetti was humble, classy and always devoted to improving himself and this team. I don't remember any kind of major controversies or skirmishes that he has been involved in, on or off the field. This is the kind of guy who is liked and respected not just by Argentina and Inter fans, but supported and admired by even the opposition.

Way too often, in the past, the media and neutrals were quick to generalize players' characteristics from different countries. Argentina bore the brunt of the negatives in those days. No country really deserves that. I am extremely glad and proud that Zanetti was Argentine and one of the first few in our generation who dispelled any such negative vibes and generalizations with this immaculate conduct on and off the field. No doubt, he has inspired many other young players to follow his footsteps!

In summary, thank you Javier. You made it easy for everyone to root for you with your unwavering professionalism and gentlemanly demeanor. Thank you for always representing your club and country with total commitment. And thank you, for being Javier Zanetti and showing the world that there are good guys in sport who are winners too!

Under pep i think GKs r used as a sweeper role, if i m not wrong valdes also was used to do it under pep... Neur is a great goal keeping talent, we can expect more n more frm him... Bt datz not de case of romero, we cant even expect him handling a high ball... What he done against romania is what de maximum we can expect frm him, may b an 80 or 90% of his talent...

Kid please don't compare neuer and Romero , of course keepers make mistakes some times but when it becomes routine like Romero then it becomes an issue . Romero is making same mistakes time and time again it looks like he never improves , that means he can't help him self , in that case sabella should have tested other keepers becouse argentina does have some good keepers that are available there is no need to take risk with important position like goalkeeper

All those who criticize Sabella he is like Ancelotti Calm and Collective and plays fantastic 4. Simeone is a different type of coach more aggresive and involved but sayign Sabella is a bad coach is stupid. You think it was easy rebuilding a falling apart team and solving our defensive problems.

the league is the big test as its over 38 games and that is a mark of a cleaver coach but winning cups does bode very well if he is to be the coach of the n/t one day.

Semeone is on the verge of winning La Liga..Semeone already won the Europa cup and Copa Del Rey cup..Semeone is without question a great coach, winning or losing the UCL final wont change that..

Messi genius Neuer made a ton of rookie moves yesterday and he's consider one of the best, a lot these goal keepers are overrated its just the simple fact they're playing for great teams which they tend to concede less goals against small clubs..Neuer for Germany have never been great in my opinion..Semeone Atlety has nothing to do with Sabella Argentina style.

Tiki Taka since 2012 -2014

2012- Mourinho won all games against Barcelona tiki taki

2013-Barcelona got humiliated by Bayern Munich twice

2013 - Spain got humiliated by Brazil

2014 Barcelona are on the verge of winning 0 trophies..Tiki taka is all good but Messi is the one that make it effective enough to break down teams..When tiki taka doesn't work Messi can dribble pass 4 - 5 players and score that's what Bayern was missing yesterday..

There is nothing wrong with Tiki taka per se but its like a product and if Barcelona doesn't try and advance the system they will always struggle to break down solid opposition..Its like Steve Job Apple product, he was always advancing his product when he was alive and the new ceo is doing the same thing..Barcelona can sit and act as if the days of 2008 and 2011 will sudden appear again...Barcelona will never return to the 2008 and 2011 class that doesn't mean they wont win the UCL again or Messi wont score a lot more goals, I just think the best days are behind Barcelona.

Tik-taka hasn't failed anybody, in the case of Barca it's their administration and the foolish policies of buying the likes of Song and Mascherano and relegating them to defensive duties instead of actually going out there and buying PROPER DEFENDERS!

As for Bayren, it was complacency more than anything that brought about their downfall, the second they won the budesliga with record points and games in hand they took their foot off the break and the signs were clear from their heavy loss to an understrength dortumond side (at home!) to their ongoing struggle to overcome ManU side, which was for bits and purposes a joke of a side!

This notion of one system taking over and changing the way the game is played is a silly one, the fact remains that there are certain systems that suit certain groups of players and it's up to a smart coach to recognize and implement such a system.

For me personally I've never been a fan of tika-taka especially when played by spain because such a possession based system tends to get very tedious if it doesn't have a footballer like Messi who can add that south american finishing touch to it but ultimately I don't see any problems with negative, possession based, counter-attacking or all out attacking football provided the game is played in a clean manner.

@el principe-- 2002 brazil win wasn't purely "jogo bonito".. if you want to see some real jogo bonito watch 1982 brazil videos.. they were actually not a team,, they were a FANTASY.. yes in the old days,, brazil were the torchbearers of beautiful football,, they knew how to win it in the most artistic way..

in 1994 all of that changed when certain players like Dunga were introduced.. and when he became the coach,, he basically wanted to bury brazil's golden past by snubbing a player like Ronaldinho..

Tiki taka didn't fail at barca but the barca administration failed to develop it the rossel gang mislead and ruined barca image and its style, with all the corruption. I guarantee you all if barca gets laporta alike administration they would retain their status within the same year!

With all the problems worest barca in recent years still managed to beat Madrid 2/3 games!!!

People seeing barca as de team at 2 or 3 years back... Bt de truth is de fellow teams gone miles forward in these years n some who were far behind them has overtaken them, bt they r still standing there or may be is walking backwards... Hw many updations real or man city or psg or bayern or chelsea or even even arsene wenger done to the squad in de last 2 or 3 years... Comparing to de squad barca hav nw to deir fellow clubs they had a decent season i will say... Jose cries all his 3 #9 r not scoring, here der is not even a man to play in dat position... Pelegrini has no belief on his centre halfs', here tata is very happy to believe song or busquests or masch as CB... Psg want lloris to compete wit sirigu, here playing against ronaldo, bale, dimaria, costa, wit JOSE MANUEL PINTO....

Also a little correction. Ask ur Brazilian friends. Remember this name: Carlos Dunga. Carlos Dunga was the first coach of Brazil in years who played counter attack dunga got criticized heavily by most Brazilians for that especially he failed to win with such tactic.. Brazil trophy in 2002 was purely joga bonito starring their fantastic four.

Our attacking four is better than Real Madrid attack but I wish our defense could be like the Atletico defense. Cool, calm and collected under pressure.

@Kid

what do u mean? U dont like tiki taka thats fine. I am not that much of a huge fan of tiki taka either but the fact remains the same BARCA will NOT change their philosophy. What do u mean I keep living in the past? As much as u love Martino, I'll still be honest that he failed in playing the proper tiki taka.

U should see the reality, not me living in the past.

Yes atleti dominated de game mostly... Wat i said is how they did from 45-75 mins is not much teams did this year against chelsea... (Park de bus games not under consideration...) i think only man city in dat fa cup 2-0 win is dominated chelsea in dis level, if i m not wrong... Even liverpool n city not played in de level atleti did at stamford bridge... Their confidence level is unbelievable, jst reflecting in their game, hats off to simeone for dat...

el principe keep living in the past..The last two world cups Brazil won they were not playing Joga Bonito football...Football is always evolving my friend, cant do the same thing all the time and expect to get a different result and unfortunately that has been Barcelona problem since the last days of Pep..And the only reason Barcelona won La Liga last season was due to the poor start by Real Madrid early on in the season.

@kid i agree... Bt we can say so many excuses in case f barca... Their back line is questionable, they dnt hav de physical players to compete wit atleti style, in last meeting they had a joke GK etc... Still rmbr de 1st la liga game at atleti home ground wer barca held dem 0-0 wit a brave prfmnc, 2nd meeting was 1st leg cl at camp nou which barca had a decent game, obviously nt good or great... 3rd game de 2nd leg cl atleti humiliated barca, no doubt... Wit a team having only 1 or 2 players good in air, n every movements hpng thru air, wat do a coach do tactically... Imo de only huge mistake he made is against dat real sociedad game wer he startd both busquests n song to prtct dfnc, bt afctd their flow f play cmpltly... I m not saying tata is a great or good tatctician, bt he is good enough for one more chance wit a complete squad, atleast for 15 or 20 games nxt season..

Barca is struggling to defeat strong counter attack teams not because tiki taka is not good but its because of many factors such as: martino is a rookie coach. Neymar is a rookie. Alexis superstar wanna be mindset. Plus a bunch of internal problems. When tiki taka is at best, they can break all the wall of the strongest defensive teams.

For that reason I'd welcome Luis Enrique. But my wish list is Pep Guardiola.

tonight it has been proven that mourinho is nothing but a stubborn idiot who only knows one way to play the game-- by playing 11 defenders.. this season he didn't but any forwards and used flash in the pan strikers like Ba,torres, eto and thought that he could win his 3rd CL by scoring 1-0 in every game.. his stubbornness today has been ripped apart by simeone's gritness.. His team defended solidly,, attacked fearlessly and finished ruthlessly.. throughout the whole season,, atletico has demonstrated why they can start a whole new Era in CL by playing a brand that is neither too defensive or offensive.. Simeone has struck bulls eye..

Atletico is going to win it i have absolutely no doubt.. Madrid defeated a passion-less bayern who were content by their bundesliga win.. atletico has continuously humiliated madrid this season and the final would top all of it.. Atletico have won no CL in history,, their hunger for the 1st CL win is far greater than any La Decima fantasy..

Simeone should be given the manager of the year award..

Atletico can beat Real Madrid, they outplay Real Madrid in both the league games..The CDR games were not important to Semeone, he gave that cup up so he could concentrate on La Liga and UCL, by the way Semeone won the CDR last season so he didn't need to win it again this season when there are bigger fish to play for..

La LIga is the best league in the world..BPL is only more marketable than La LIga but when it comes to beautiful football and talent the BPL don't even come close to La Liga..Mouthino ''the special joke'' can go sit somewhere now..

@Kid

Enrique is the disciple of Pep. It is normal if Barca is interested in them. You can not expect Barca to change their tiki taka philosophy. It is just not possible. Tiki taka has been their dna maybe even earlier than the era of Johan Cruyff. I think their number one requirement of becoming a Barca coach is "do u agree to play possession football?" Which means they will never be interested in defensive coaches like Mou or Capello ot a counter attack greats like Ancelotti or Simeone.

I am telling you football fans these days..As I said before I have no problem with Sosa, he's one of our only physical players who can do well in dirty park bus games at the world cup..Sabella is a tactical coach not a pretty playing football coach, so that's why Sosa will fit in his squad..Both Enzo Perez and Sosa should go to the world cup..

Argentina played on the South American continent for the past three years during world cup qualifiers..Being outside of the continent wont affect them going into the world cup..Playing in places like Peru, Ecuador, Colombia and, Bolivia have given our players enough preparation for the heated conditions in Brazil this summer..Folks can spin all they want but Argentina, like Brazil, Uruguay, Chile, Colombia and Ecuador have an advantage over all European teams..Even weak teams like Honduras and Costa Rica will tend to do well because of the conditions...1978 was a long time and that world cup was in Argentina a more cooler place during the summer, if the world cup was in Argentina it would have been good news for the European teams but unfortunately its in Brazil a more hostile place..

Chelsea was always going to be in trouble because they did not score an away goal..Atletico Madrid is a better team than Chelsea without a doubt..

im not sure that being in sth America is one of the big advantages it was 30 plus years ago.
sure the draw plays some part with the times vs heat but if we do get to play in the heat of the day in later rounds this will badly effect our fast counter attacking game.
most of out team play in Europe and have for many many years and this mean our players are no longer use to playing in sth American pitches and the searing heat/comditions.
the crowds are a advantage but remember we have not been given a lot of tickets as they don't want us argies making brazil our homegrounds :)

Maybe v have already seen the last of tiki taka. (Guardiola'z Barca & Pekerman'z Argentina) entertained the world to the utmost. Its unbelievable that its over.
.
Now Roberto Di Matteo & Mourinho rule the world with their styles of defence. For me they are boring but they are winning. :)
.
Bielsa'z Bilbao high pressing was dynamic aswell but couldnt get their hands to 2 crowns.... 'lip missed the cup'
.
Now counter attacking is rampaging the world. Phew...... rampant fast but I have to force myself to like it. Now therez no other go. Im for it aswell as Argentina went for it..
.
Pep & Messi will never join again. The journey is over..... media will write but 200% sure that it will not happen neither work out.
.
Luis Enrique - will he be able???????????
.
Sabella will not leave post for 10 more years.
.

Playing good in European games has nothing to do playing well in the World Cup , it is different ball game . The World Cup will be played in the months were players usually get rest and vacation add that to the travelling and the heat some teams will expereince , this is our advantage we won't face those things , those things are very important freshness is necessary , teams from South America know the rough climate and touch pitches in South America they will do well, I hope we don't face Ecuador they are tough, I believe this our cup this karma , it is about our long suffering , it is about beating brazil at the maracana , it is payback to pele for all his insults about messi over the years this our destiny vamos argentina

KidultHood,
nigeria and bosnia have good players, much better than people give them credit...
take bosnia, their two forwards combine for 40 in the german and premier league....and their attacking midfield is also solid...few teams can claim that...
but due to their style of play, i think we will manage well teams like bosnia, nigeria, belgium, ghana...

i think nigeria and bosnia up front will give us as much trouble as the elite teams, so that will help us get our defense together... which i think sabella will get together, and will improve the further we move along in the tournament.

For europe n south america the meaning of football has huge difference... For europeans throwing body defenders r de great but for south americans dos who keep composure n stay in feet r de good one... For europeans dfndrs doing cool short passes r risky or stupid football, they want dfndrs to kick de ball away whenever they get de ball on feet... I m not saying blindly on everyone, bt most...

my friends, im from south america, i have lived in rosario, buenos aires, in brasil and venezuela...

im aware of the heat, and of the altitude!!! one time playing in bolivia, we were up 4 0, and then lost 6 4!!! summer in buenos aires are hot, but in places like manaus it is literally a sauna...as it is in recife and salvador...

but not all of brazil will be crazy hot, as it is winter there, so some places will have good weather... france, like us, got lucky...we will miss the severe heat, if it finishes first in its group...

france will play switzerland in sauna weather. but it was lucky, and will play honduras and ecuador in the cooler cities...

but england, germany, italy, and even spain, face a tougher road...

Tizeboule ''Every euro news media are talking about it. Argentina is strong up front but weak in the midlle and the back.''

Yea let them talk about it, because they will play right into Sabella hands :)..And how is Germany defense that conceded 7 goals vs a poor Swedish team that only have one good player? How is the Italian defense that conceded 4 goals vs Brazil at the Confed cup and 3 goals vs Japan at the confed cup? and if not for poor finishing they(Japan) could have score more goals, Italy also conceded the second most goals at the Confed cup behind Tahiti..How was Spain defense against Brazil at last year confederation cup? Chile went to Wembly and ran circle around England defense while Argentina kept them in check for over 180 minutes..

Bro don't come with this Euro foolishness to me, you think I care what Europeans are saying about Argentina? I for one is not a fan of the European teams and will never be,so I careless what their media as to say especially the overrated British team media..Are you a fan or a GLORY HUNTER?

@Pep A lot of things will come into consideration at the world cup, its not all about who you have on a team sheet because at the end of the day, none of the European players are use to playing in the heated and sticky conditions in Brazil, you think the European teams will be able to play in Brazil this summer the way they have been playing this season in the European domestic leagues? @ Kidullthood"There is nothing wrong with our defense, yes it can use some tweaking but our defense is as solid as any in world football" Are you kidding me. Every euro news media are talking about it. Argentina is strong up front but weak in the midlle and the back. As much as I want Argentina to win, I have to be realistic. We left out the inter-milan players that won CL, Calcio in 2010. Zaneti, Samuel, Cambiasso. In 2006, Riquelme, messi on the bench agains Germany. Batigol, Redondo once almost didn't make the team if they didn't cut their hair!!

Now you guys mad, cause I ask for Musacchio, Enzo, Gaitan, Samuel, Fazio, To be on the team. Wow!. These players make the team better. I don't see the problem if they are including in this team. A world cup is every 4 years, therefore le's use all the asset we have to bring this cup home. That's all i'm going to say
