Ezequiel GARAY, GAITAN and more win league

Ezequiel GARAY, Nicolas GAITAN, Eduardo SALVIO, Rogelio FUNES MORI and Enzo PEREZ won the Portuguese League title with Benfica.

Five Argentinean players won the league title with Benfica. The team secured their 33rd league title on Sunday in a 2-0 win. Ezequiel GARAY and Nicolas GAITAN have both been rumored to be leaving the club for well over a year. Here's what GARAY had to say about possibly leaving:

"I don't know, we'll see. My wife and I are very happy here and hopefully we'll have more years."

Congrats. Garay and Enzo Perez have an outstanding night against Juve, while Tevez make his first strike since April 2009 in European League,

Good for Tango that Garay is on fire and can scored.

Messi genius Argentina had almost the perfect teams for Copa 2004 and 2007 yet they failed to win the titles after playing the best football in both tournament..Never underestimate Sabella abilities as a coach..Sabella knows what he's doing, I am sure like you, Sabella too want to win the world cup, or you think he's just going to the world cup for a show?..

@Argentuban-Yes, I woke up this morning and I see where Barca will have a full summer transfer season. Incredibly good news for them. It makes you wonder why these punishments are handed out with so much fanfare when the people in the know realize they won't stand.

@mmh007 I have nothing against him family as matter of fact I don,t even know his family, but I am passionate argentina fan I can,t stand any more failure we had enough. that is why when ever I hear sabella insisting on flawed players it annoys me , and it reminds all of these past years that we didn,t win any trophy was not due to not having good players but rather stupid coaches standing in the way by picking the players through favoritism and ignoring capable players

Over 3 hours of CL Futbol the past 2 days…and a total of one damn goal! Think about that for a minute. With all the talent on the field for the 4 combined teams and all the money spent on the squads, we were treated to one tap-in goal.

Sure I love for my teams to win just like everyone else, but at the end of the day Futbol is not my job…I watch it for ENTERTAINMENT, drama, skill and beauty.

When you take attacking, open teams like Barcelona, Dortmund and Arsenal out of the competition with negative futbol, THIS is what you get…basically unwatchable crap with very little drama (other than the embarrassing diving). Win or lose, thank God my teams, Argentina/Barca don't play this brand of futbol.

Bayern has been a consistent team in the UCL for the past 5 season..If they make this final, it will be their 4th final in 5 season..Not bad, I don't like the German NT but I respect Bayern Munich..Well its good that Bayern play all the way to the final, their players will be over burden come the world cup..Looking at Schweinsteiger tonight I don't know how he will cope in the South American heat, same goes for Lahm...

I would take Chelsea winning the UCL with Mourinho than Cristina winning it with Real Madrid..I can't stand the Cristina fans on B/R.

Bayern were clearly the better team..All Madrid does these days is counter attack, that's risky football, giving the opponent 75% of the ball on your home turf.

@dinucci pathetic from RM... Ball possession 75% to bayern... Has to say dat bayern not tested casillas according to their authority on game, yes its similar pep style, but RM really struggled to keep ball in hand... Only about 60% pass success... Di maria didnt gt chance to get involve in game as usual playing at bale position... 1st half they got ball only 5 or 6 times i think in dat created 3 counter attacks, 1 benzema scored, 1 ronaldo misd in point blank range, 1 di maria misd in a comparitively difficult angle... Both cud hav been scored... 60-70% ball was been at RM half... Casillas made a briiliant save at last minutes to keep lead hold...

@Kidult

I am not a Barca fan. I am a Messi fan. Because I am a Messi fan, I don't want Messi to be unhappy or to have teammates who don't know to play with him. They include Alexis and Neymar.

Unlike you, my way of thinking is different. if Messi is at his best at Barca, that will just do good for Argentina. I want him to win Ballon D'or for at least 5-6 more times. He needs excellent display for both Argentina and Barcelona for that.

The bottom line is. Start the rebuilding project for Barca. Get rid of: Alexis, Neymar, and Fabregas. Get better "Robins" not "Batmans".

Barcelona are heavily linked with the signing of Malaga Gk Willy Caballero, even the clown a like Zubi can see the qualities of Willy who is beyond Sabellas eyesight, its a pain for me that Argentina now has two world class Gks in Willy and Julian both of whom won't probably make it at the expense of sarcastic Sergio Romelol and Mariano Anduclown, I am telling you guys these clowns could surely affect our world cup hope in a negative manner.

@Johnny: This saves Barcelona even if they lose tn the end though, because it will basically cover the summer transfer period. They get ter Stegen, their other recent youth starlet purchase, and they can go all out to get the players that they needed. It was really the only shot they had to not have a dead 2014-2015 season - without getting a better keeper, some defenders there would be no way for them to challenge for the league or anything else.

So long as they binge on players int he summer window, they can make it so nothing in the coming ban affects them.

I'm talking in general. I'm not afarid of Portugal and France, but we will find out. I'm still concerned about our midfield against top European teams. But if everything goes as plans, we definitely have a chance.

Sabella still needs to take a speedy wingback, hopefully Peruzzi.

Messi to remain in Barcelona is my top priority...... If if if if Joan Laporta steps in. Otherwise i woul happily accept his decision to join 1) Manchester United, 2) Bayern Munich, 3) Liverpool, 4) Arsenal, 5) Inter Milán, 6) Real Madrid (even... ). But never ever Manchester City, Chelsea, PSG, Monaco, Juventus, etc.
.
But how will Messi work with Louis Van Gaal?
.
Why is Bielsa not bing wanted by bigger club s?

I wont back the quote that tata struggled to cop wit spanish football... Each coach differ in deir approach to game... At newell tata didnt use barca style f play, so if you call him to coach you need to expect that kind of game at barca.... Bt this barca side is very much stick to their style due to continous play for such a long period... I wud say the players struggled to cop wit tata style... Main prblm is in his style de weakness f barca dfnc exposed more...

Remember the transfer ban has been suspended ON APPEAL. That doesn't mean that it won't be put back in force. Though it wouldn't surprise me if Barca ended up getting some relief.

What a surprise, Barcelona ban has been suspended...Like FIFA was going to let one of the most successful & powerful clubs in Europe struggle to sign players..

Argentina does not need to worry about France and Portugal, yes they can be dangerous but our team is still better than both France and Portugal..Guess what, the last time Argentina and France met at the world cup we won, in 1978 on South American soil..Argentina played Portugal 7 times winning 5 times, drawing 1 and losing 1 game back in 1972..Argentina will always be better than France and Portugal..Our talent pool is greater than both Portugal and France..France & Portugal were poor throughout world cup qualifiers..I am not worried about France or Portugal..I am worried about Brazil, Colombia and Chile..

As expected and since they're moving behind the scenes, is Tata going to be the first move, is he going to be sacked?

It looked like Messi wasn't comfortable with him and if I'm right, Martino will be the first victim!

I previously thought of Bielsa as the best option for Barca's style of play! They believed in Tata due to his short tenure with Newll's and they thought, they've found their savior, but it appeared like he needed time to adapt to la Liga and I don't blame him, since he came, he started asking for reinforcement in the defensive line and the team, by adding a #9 to his offensive line, but he didn't get what he wanted and was forced to work with what he has.
I hope he stay's and show us how would he apply his tactics after getting the players he wants.

Batigol9, very likely... having said that, i rather play portugal than france...
but i would say there is a chance we may have to play germany...

not sure how germany will play in the extreme heat and huminidity of the amazon... portugal has lot of brasilian and african players more used to the heat, and if they managed to beat germany they may grab the first place...

in any case, sabella is a much better coach than maradona was, and the team is better than last year, so i think argentina can take germany... it is more physical teams with no pressure on their shoulders like portugal and france that I find more discomforting to face...

Former Albiceleste front man Hernan Crespo recently told Goal that it is thanks to Di Maria’s switch that both Argentina’s World Cup prospects and Real Madrid’s trophy hopes have been boosted.

"It is very important for Argentina that Di Maria is playing in the central midfield position," said Crespo. "He has convinced Ancelotti to change the way the team plays. He took Isco’s space, but Madrid have won with Di Maria playing good football, and he’s been good for the balance of the team."

Simeone and Mourinho is a similar type of coach. They both are result oriented, not beauty oriented. They both are willing to play ugly football as long as they win. They both are great at motivating their players. They both are "Bilardista" not "Menotista" in Argentine terms. The 0-0 ugly game was very predictable.

Simeone now says that Chelsea is the favorite now. The exact same tactic Mourinho used when he kept saying that Liverpool or Man City is the favorite.

i think france and portugal are the teams to be most concerned about for us...
france has world class players in every position, and now has a great coach Deschamps who led Monaco to the CHampions league final, and who was the captain and true leader behind France success in 98, 00... pogba matudui y cabaye is a midfield to fear... likewise Portugal has the two best defensive midfielder in the portuguese league who could play in any top team, fernando and william carvalho. they have moutinho, nani, coentrao, pepe, alves...and they will play a typical mourinho type of football, kick the move and everything that moves....

so, i would rather that argentina doesnt have to play them...

having said that, i trust sabella, to make the correct tactical adjustment... as he did when he was in estudiantes...sabella, to me, is one of the best readers of the game, and the other team....

my only criticism with sabella, is that while portugal and france will have great goolies, we will have romero...

Cambiasso is hopeful about his chance of representing Argentina in the World Cup.

"Do I have World Cup hopes now that Gago is injured? I'm hopeful, but certainly not because of his injury, but rather for my club performances," Cambiasso told Inter's official website.

"I hope Fernando (Gago) makes it to the tournament since he's an important player for Argentina."

simeone is sincere, he plays the football he likes, but does not go around trashing others.. instead mourinho, his words says it all:

“As we say in Portugal, they brought the bus and they left the bus in front of the goal. I would have been frustrated if I had been a supporter who paid £50 to watch this game because Spurs came to defend. There was only one team looking to win, they only came not to concede – it’s not fair for the football we played.” – after a 0-0 draw with Tottenham Hotspur

"It's very difficult to play a football match when only one team wants to play. A football match is about two teams playing," Mourinho said To come here the way they did, is that acceptable? "This is not Premier League, this is not the best league in the world. This is football from the 19th century. "The only thing I can bring more to win was a Black and Decker. A Black and Decker to destroy the wall."

I agree with el principe on Belgium I think they can be a surprice team, the talent is there...i agree as well they haven't been tested but this is the the place for it so we'll see.

My darkhorse team was really gonna be Columbia up until Falcao got injured, but with Pekerman they can still play a good brand of football and it helps the WC is in South America.

That said I expect a strong showing from the South American teams.
Uruguay with grit and Chile with that uptempo style and flair can both reach far.

In the in end anything can happen , its the World Cup the highest level of football.

@ Messi Genuis and some others
I too miss the golden age of italian football in the 90's. Its my firm belief if an attacker made a name for himself at that time he could play in any arena.
The Defenders at time were greats, hell every positions had it stacked.
Beppe SIgnori, Batigol, Maldini, Baresi for a bit, Boban, Savecivic, Baggio, Peruzzi, Pagluica, Maradona, Van Basten, ok here is what this list it tooo long.

Thanks for the updates Kidult- you make some great points there!

Really glad to know that Rojo has been steady at club level now, and that FF has played much more than I originally thought he did! Bodes well for us for sure. So now it's Romero and 1 MF position that we are worried about, I guess we have to just live with it and hope it turns out well.

Agree with you on Demi too. I am not his biggest fan, but much of the pundits and fans alike were giving him too much grief when their bigger stars were making many more mistakes. Kidult - from your profile picture, I'm guessing you are a big Citeh fan? ;)

My two world cup favorites: Brazil and Argentina..I don't care what people say on Mundo, it will be crazy hard for any European team to defeat Brazil or Argentina on the South American continent..I am not backing down from any favoritism tag, I am proud of my boys, I fear no team in Brazil this summer, so to act as if Argentina is the worse team going into Brazil will make us win the world cup even more is ludicrous(I will let Sabella and the boys do the grounding stuff)..Argentina squad is as talented as Spain and Germany..Argentina is not inferior to Spain or Germany going into Brazil..Argentina and Brazil have history on their side, so too Uruguay...I know anything can happen in football but I just don't see any European team besting Brazil or Argentina..The only team I see can stop Brazil on their way to the final is a Colombia team with an healthy Falcao..Argentina with a grounded coach like Sabella will most likely make the finals..Historically this world cup is set up for all the South American teams to do well..Its the first time in a world cup that all South American teams are this competitive with a lot of world class players. If you go by the last world cup in South Africa, none of the South American teams went out in the group stage..

Kenneth sorry,I feel Chile will top group B, Spain and Holland will be fighting for 2nd spot..That doesn't mean Spain won't progress..France had a tough time in their group in 2006, placing second behind Switzerland yet they still went on to the finals..Because I said Spain wont win the group people act as if Spain are guaranteed to top the group or make the semis..Spain still lack deep history at the world cup and only came on the scene when Barcelona was dominating club football, so do the math now, Barcelona are struggling at the moment and with a lack of confidence.

el principe You throw out a bunch of Belgium names as if that makes them likely to do well or go far in the tournament..Belgium is overrated and up to this day they have not been tested..The English media are the ones hyping up Belgium because they have a bunch of guys in the BPL..Doing good in the BPL means nothing at the world cup..Man United and Chelsea have been the foundation for English players in the last 12 years and how did that translate on the English NT? Towsend had a decent game vs Poland and all of a sudden he was one of the best young player in the world by English pundits, shows you how these people see talent..

I hope Garay doesn't go to United, that will be a bad move..Garay should go to either Napoli or Man City..

Fernandez have played 2,115 minutes so far in Serie A plus the games he played in the UCL..Only Higuain, Insigne, Inler, Callejon, Albiol and Reina have had more minutes at Napoli this season than Federico Fernandez..Rojo is a star on the Sporting Lisbon team and he's one of the pillow of the Sporting defense hence that's why they have one of the best defensive record in Portugal conceding only 18 goals in 28 games, only 3 more than the league champions Benfica, who only conceded 15 goals thus far.

Demchelis approach his career at Man City like a true professional, he had a rough start adapting in England at the beginning then he got use to the pace and style of the English game as time goes on..Demchelis is not the greatest defender in the world but I would take him over majority of the English born football players any day..

Greets :)

Adding young legs at attacking part is a good thought, bt a 20 yr old as DM in WC is a risky move no?... Dnt knw, if he is a incredible talent then ok, otherwise...

Really curious to know if Sabella is looking at any alternatives for the midfield roles , at least in the 30 member squad . I have only seen a couple of names mentioned here (Kranevitter, Romero), guessing a couple of local papers have mentioned these names, and there's no other dependable source .

Question- for those who follow the portugese league, is Rojo an automatic starter? I have seen Federico fernandez being a part time starter only for Napoli (not undisputed yet). Romero rides the bench. Gago is out injured. These are 4 out of our starting 11 players! Pretty unique situation ..!

Agree with Amlan & Johnny regarding Demi. Nobody is making him out to be an ageless Paulo Maldini or anything. Nobody claims that he is faster than Usain Bolt. Pelligrini wanted him in, played him in all games. Their array of super-rich "superstar" defenders should outwork him and get into the starting XI. Instead their fans love to make him a scapegoat for practically everything, and the English media loves to pile on and act like the giant douchebags that they are.

Messi genius@ Are you sure about these rumours? Kranevitter? It would be amazing. Just now I was dreaming about calling him up by Sabella as sub of Gago. He's young briliant player with excellent technical skills. Just look at him on South American Championschip U-20 2013.

@johnny agree with you, wish the old SERIE A was here, real football was played there I remember old players who were past their prime used to go in England now young fans only know epl they no longer know technical football all they know is kick and rush players like Cristiano Ronaldo and bale are their idols it is about speed now and running like wild coyote not dribbiling and passing if not for messi and few other players technical football would have been lost thank god for leo he reminded every body that true football is about passing and dribbiling

Sorry Pablo D but I can't help to get excited imagining Gonzalo Higuain has a suitable partner in Lamela. Exactly what Napoli, Higuain, Benitez lack of: creativity.

This is actually an off topic considering he will not play in the world cup, but Demichelis being the man of the match made my day. Demichelis himself got a little bit surprised to hear his name announced at Etihad as the man of the match. The commentators were so surprised that they even jokingly mentioned that making Demichelis the man of the match was an act of sympathy for all the criticism he had endured so far playing for Manchester City. :D :D

But he actually played very good yesterday.

Another prediction:

Barcelona need to rebuild as soon as next season (if no transfer ban). If they won't do it in the next 2 seasons, then they will be the next MU.

MU want to rebuilding now, but is too late. They should have started at least 2 years ago instead of still relying on the oldies Giggs, Scholes, and Ferdinand in the past.

Barca Xavi, Iniesta, Alves. Those three are the engine of the team. They are not really getting worse yet, but for sure are not getting any better either. They are all over 28 years of age. IF those three get worse, it is normal if Barca get worse as well since they are the engine.

Fabregas was thought to be the replacement of Xavi, but I don't think so. Thiago would have been a good one, but they sold him. Sergi Roberto is too raw. The 29-30 year old Iniesta can still play at this level (if no injury) for 3 years at max. It will be super hard to replace this raw talent.

Montoya is nowhere near Alves peak level. They need a new DR here.

Just look at how they handle the DC. The organization is not doing good there. Puyol is injury prone and is old, but they just start pushing the panic button this season! As a result, it is obvious that DC (and size) is Barca weakness this season.

Barca need to get rid of a lot of players who don't have the DNA of Barca like Alexis or possibly Neymar. Why not? If they could get rid one of the world hottest, Ibra just because he didn't fit Messi's game, why not Neymar and Alexis for the sake of the team? Neymar-Messi-Alexis is the worst Barca trio I can think of since Messi era in 2005.

I like the way they think when they got both Alves and Adriano from Sevilla. Neither of them were the world best at right and left defense (Adriano was a left midfielder at the time), but they saw something in them that should fit Barca game. They were right.

Alves especially turns into the world best RB up until now. The RB before him? The ex world best RB and arguably the best RB of the World Cup 2006, the high profile, Gianluca Zambrotta.

But it did not work...

They need to look for RAW TALENTS, not GALACTICOS. They are not Madrid in this. Madrid always prefer GALACTICOS (from Ronaldo, Figo, Zidane, to CR7), but Barca is different. They are the world best at developing talents. Messi, Iniesta, Xavi, Busquets, Pique, Puyol, Alves, Eto'o (ex Mallorca) are just few of the examples.

Well we can always make prediction, but I don't think Belgium is overrated. They have their best squad since 1986 and 1990 in Enzo Scifo era (the European Maradona).

I think they are more complete than ever now. They have the top three best goalie in the world in Courtouis. They have one of the top five best DC in Kompany and then Vermaelen, Vertonghen, Van Buyten are quite solid too. In midfield they are not any worse than any team in the world as they have Witsel, Nainggolan, Fellaini (Fellaini of Belgium is not the same as Fellaini of MU), Dembele, Bruyne, and Hazard, one of the best AM in the world.

Upfront they are a bit thin, but Lukaku is at least better than Heskey. They also have Higuain's partner, Mertens there.

I think Belgium is the dark horse for me.

I can't see Jose, but you never know. If he leaves Chelsea for United he will be hated there forever. Klopp says he ain't leaving Dortmund. Simeone doesn't fit the United conservative background. Can you see Simeone patrolling the pitch at Old Trafford in his all black pimp suit ? Unlikely I would think.

van Gaal seems the safe choice but he will be at the WC with the Dutch team for quite awhile. I would think United would want someone on board soon to start working through the transfer season options. Giggs ? No coaching experience at all. I wouldn't think the Glazers would want an untried manager even if he is a United icon.

So who ? Don't know. Roberto Martinez ? Sabella ?:)

we need to take one match at hand and sail forward.
All teams are coming to WC to prove something , so it is not wise to under estimate any team.

and yes favorite tags will always be there , thank god media is behind brazil, germany and spain.

We need a healthy squad that will be our first hurdle to cross , then the camping will help the team to acclimate the climate and will improve the cohesion. Then the startegy has to form to face physical , park the bus teams...etc

till that time we can hope for the best :)

Three teams that are favorite to win this world cup are Brazil, Spain and Germany. We are not favorite in my opinion. But we of course have the potential to win this world cup. Not being favorite is a blessing to Argentina. My friends try to put pressure on me saying that Argentina is hot favorite for this tournament considering the familiar surrounding, awesome attack, Messi and improved defensive ability. If they can't win this world cup, then they won't win it in the foreseeable future. But I always knock them down mentioning the problems Argentina have and may face during world cup like goalkeeper, midfield, injury, form etc. The world is easier to deal with if Argentina is not a favorite. Otherwise the overwhelming pressure would be impossible to handle.

@kid im not sure why you think Spain is going to flop big time, i agree that with age they are being over hyped which is why i think Belgium might just flop, because they are no longer the " dark horse" everybody thinks they will do crazy good. As for Spain, i don't see them going out in group stages, round of 16 is a definite maybe but not group.

As for my outlandish predictions...Germany won't make through the group stage, call it hope or whatever but against Ghana, the U.S and Portugal Germany will play against 3 teams who will sit back and defend, given that they are in South America and not in Europe i say it's a possibility they won't make it out. My random dark horse is Mexico, i honestly don't like Mexico but if they come together at the right time and Vela chooses to go to this world cup...in South America it's possible they could knock out a big name in the round of 16.

Anyways this is more me hoping then actual insight, but you never know a guy can dream can't he?

benteke is out of the w.c and that is a big loss for belgium but even with him they are still over rated.

baker:i agree 2002 should be in that top 10(actually top 5) as we were no 1 in the world and some thing like 38 matches unbeaten then to go to the w.c and look so crap.
to not even get out of the group stage is a disgrace for the talent we had then.

http://www.tribalfootball.com/articles/important-aguero-has-no-injury-worries-man-city-s-pellegrini-4018298#.U1WmV6Jn3pE

Manchester City’s Manuel Pellegrini has allayed fears that Sergio Aguero sustained an injury on Monday night.

The Argentine striker started for just the second time in a Premier League fixture since late January when scoring early in City’s eventual 3-1 victory over West Bromwich Albion at the Etihad Stadium before he was subbed off in the 64th minute.

Aguero has made only 20 league appearances this term, for an incredible 16 goals, which prompted Pellegrini to speak highly of his influence on the City side and the fact that his absence sees the 2012 champions sitting six points league leaders Liverpool.

"Kun is a top player, he makes the difference - that is why playing this year without Kun for 12 or 14 games without him is a very important advantage," he told Sky Sports.

"Sergio does not have a problem, but we thought 60 - 70 minutes and the way he plays always running it was we wanted, we wanted him to have more minutes but at this moment not 90 minutes."
