I don't know Deb. I guess I don't see the same Sosa you saw. I didn't see any good things whatsoever in Sosa. The record proved it (3 losses since he joined in just a few games). The statistics proved it.

Sorry I strongly disagree in this. For me Simeone is making a great mistake in trusting Sosa who is equal to 0 player on the pitch. Anytime Sosa played, Atletico made them play with 10 men actually. Maybe Sosa didn't make horrible mistakes like Demichelis did, but he did nothing.

Young Peruzzi and Lopez are better than taking ageing campagnaro. Perzzu is a very good full/wing back. Campa can cover but at his age will not make runs, He is not ZANETTI!!!! Lopez is better too, as can cover LB and LCB. ROJO, we will see, i know for sporting he plays LCB

If the world cup would happen at the beginning of a season instead of at the end, I would have gone for 100% flair and style. But remember teams will be coming to Brazil with most of their star players already over-exploited and exhausted and only the lesser used and young players more ready to explode. We need physically strong players. Not everyone is Javier Mascherano. People do tend to get slow during the months of June and July.

It was April when Bayern beat Barca last year, for many reasons the main one being Barca being physically much less prepared to go. In world cups, sometimes you need people who can stand tall and strong, follow the team tactics and just be decent enough for 90 mins. That can win matches.

I haven't checked the rating, but based on what I myself have seen of him recently for Athletico, he was reliable. Physically he looks good, which for me is very important for the world cup. In such short tournaments, teams outpower their opponents mainly on physical preparation. His movements and passing have also not been that bad. Yes he is a bit on the slower side and lacks top class creativity, but if he is there in NT he wouldn't be an attacking midfielder for sure. Sabella will deploy him much lower down the pitch, at which he may come good mainly because of his physicality and strong movements with the ball.

I am not for starting with him though. Just good to have on the bench.

@Deb

Sosa has been really good with the ball in Spain? I don't think so...

I watched Atletico sometimes, and although it's not 100% accurate, but goal.com or whoscored.com rating is not 100% inaccurate. Sosa has never received better than 3 stars for Atletico. Mostly 2 stars or 2 and half stars (goal.com version) which equivalent to 4.0 or 5.0.

Secondly, Atletico was super tough to beat before January. After January, Madrid (twice) and a mediocre team beat them when Sosa was taking part. Simeone should have relied on his old bench, not Sosa.

Third, he was doing absolutely nothing. What position does he play? Attacking midfielder? No skill, no dribbling, just excellent at back pass. Central midfielder? Not that good defensively and not that good at passing. Winger? Could be the worst and slowest winger in la liga if he's considered a winger?

Multi position like Di Maria? Well the truth is he's doing everything to show Sabella that he wants to go to the World Cup, the problem is he's got nothing.

good points deb , but 7 defenders...? i think sabella will pick 8 defenders , since he do have a tendency to go for a 5-3-2 formation. he may need extrac defnder.

Sabella is as pragmatic as ever even in this final call-up. Respect.

Jose Sosa deserves one more chance as he has been really good with the ball in Spain over the last few days. His work rate cannot be ignored.

Caballero seems to be an old chapter finally. I still feel he should have had a 1-on-1 with Sabella regarding his position. Instead of involving the media.

I agree with Mali. Calling Musacchio and Gonzalo for substitute roles behind Garay and Fernandez might have done more bad than good for the team spirit. They are leaders in their region and let them remain that way. This is all too late and Sabella realizes that.

The last defending spot seems to be hanging between Otamendi, Lisandro and Peruzzi now. The taker will join aboard as the 7th defender in Sabella's team.

OVERALL, a good team. Moreover the thoughts behind this team seem to be along the same lines of sense and logic as in the previous call-ups. That's reassuring. Sabella seems to have kept his cool amidst everything.

Sabella is following maradona route................. Picking own faborites..........................no argentine players are in bayern munich, manchester utd, liverpool, arsenal, chelsea,,ac milan(matias silbestre),dortmond,roma,porto....WHY? ... BECOZ even the relegation zone argentine players can able to make national squad............. Brasil, germany, spain, franch players like to go big clubs so they have high chanch to represents their nation.....IF SABELLA PICKS BIG BOYS,I AM SURE ARGENTINE B TEAM CAN ALSO LIFT WORLD CUP.............brasil always supports domestic players ....... So what about our domestic players like zaculini, peredes, vieto, lanzini, sanchez mino,riuili,guzman,corea...........age doesnt matter if u have talent......... Players from getafe, catania, celta vigo , monterrey in nt......... Players from benfica,juventus,psg,....... Are excluded.......................

I think calling up Lisandro Lopez makes sense. He is an option at center back, left back and defensive midfield. He is aerially and technically accomplished and provides a lot of goals from headers too. It's just experience that counts against him but I do feel that he will be a valuable asset and is definitely going to be one of our future stalwarts in defence. I hope he replaces Marcos Rojo in the main lineup because Lopez is the kind of left footed center back that Sabella uses to help free up Di Maria and add solidity to the back line with Zabaleta bombing up on the right.

Gino Peruzzi is a welcome addition and a good back up for Zabaleta. I was worried that we dont have an attacking wing back option on the bench which could have caused our defense to be to static and Maradonaesque (2010 world cup with four center backs) in the event of an injury to Zabaleta.

I guess this is the end of the road for Willy Caballero's chances with the national team. I think Sabella is showing that he has complete faith in Romero and thereby inspiring him. It reminds me of the dialogue in the The Dark Knight, "Some people deserve to have their faith rewarded". It is a huge gamble but let's hope Sabella gets his faith rewarded. It was too late to break up a defence that was built over two years anyways. It is fairly disappointing but I am with Sabella on this.

Backup options in Midfield are OK if not stellar. I would have preferred Enzo Perez to be there for one of Jose Sosa or Augusto Fernandez but again it's Sabella's faith in those two that are keeping them in the team. They are not that bad players either and are very versatile and tactically adept. One of them will come into play while trying to balance the team in the final moments of a tight game or whenever one of the Fab 4 gets injured and Sabella decides to go for a 4-4-2 over a 3-5-2. He is going for versatility and team chemistry over big names which isn't a bad thing at all.

Too bad Gonzalo Rodriguez and Matteo Musacchio couldn't make the cut. They would have provided valuable experience and solidity at the back. But like I said earlier, it's too late and I feel its their lack of versatility that has proved to be their downfall. And they definitely won't suit being backups to Ezequiel Garay and Federico Fernandez. If they were to go to the World Cup, it should be as first choice central defensive pairing (especially considering that they are leaders at their respective clubs) and not backups to others.

Altogether a fairly good and expected lineup. He has plugged most of our deficiencies and has relied on trust for the tackling rest. I am pretty sure Sabella knows what he is doing so I am firmly behind him on his selections. Vamos Argentina!!!

sosa/augusto will be get replaced with gago and maxi so no worries on that...

question here is , what is the surprise call ups indicates..?

Lisandro Lopez : he is highly rated when he is in argentine league and people in argentina are happy about this inclusion , so he is competing for which spot...?
peruzzi : He is RB , we do have zaba in his position , i think sabella is not trusting hugo so may be peruzzi will fight with hugo for his spot..

But what about LB..? , i really wished orban will get one more shot

Should have gave orban or emiliano insua a chance. Also should have gave Gonzalo Rodriguez. Now Peruzzi has been having good games for catania helping them get a few points with good player ratings and can show Campagnaro doesn't have his spot 100% won. Now augusto fernandez and sosa I'm guesing are here because my favorite player you can guess is injured. Hopefully we see some Messi action and see him happier then playing with all these brazilians.

Ok after reading all your posts here are my comments (for anyone who is interested)

1. Can Argentina win the world cup?

The answer is a resounding YES. Think about it, the team is quite strong (proven by the qualifiers' and the friendlies' results).
Argentina has the best forwards by far, not to mention a strong midfield and a solid defense.

2. What are the chances of Argentina winning the world cup?

To be honest higher than one might expect, sure it will be an uphill battle (winning the cup ALWAYS is!) but if the team makes it to the WC injury free then that combined with a favorable group stage draw and quite possibly a favorable draw until the semis plus favorable playing conditions and the presence of Argentine fans throughout can and will go along way.

3. Is Argentina's defense weak?

As I said above the defense is solid if not spectacular. The team has a better goal per game average than the likes of Italy and Germany who many consider to have a far superior defense to the presence of "name" defenders in their ranks but like many of us here have said over the years that big name players does not a good team make.
The likes of Spain and Netherlands boast a better goal conceded/game than Argentina but compare their qualifiers with those of the albiceleste and you'll realize its not even a competition.
Brazil have conceded the least goals out of all the major teams but we should remember that all they've played are games (although I can't deny that they have an air tight defense when all is said and done)

At the end of the day we should remember that it doesn't matter how strong argetina's defense is because they will always end up being compared with the team's attacking force and as such will come out looking wanting, especially to the casual observer.

4. should Romero go to the WC?

Absolutely! the guy's a solid GK with WC experience and as such he should be atleast on the bench.
Now his lack of playing time is concerning but Sabella has made it clear that he's aware of the issue and that if his situation doesn't improve then something will be done about it, that's good enough for me!

5. What are the team's shortcomings?

The same ones that we've discussed time and time again, Gago's fitness, Romero's lack of playing time and Marcos Rojo! Plus the general lack of strong back up fullbacks (need to see more of Orban and Roncaglia to pass judgement).
But remember that all the teams have shown certain weaknesses for example Germany's defense has come under scrutiny while Bastian and Kadira's injuries are as worrying as those of Gago.
Brazil have a similar issue with Ceasar's playing time while their attacking line up (ironic considering this is Brazil we're talking about) is somewhat lacking.
Italy are too inconsistent as is Balotelli; Spain have shown signs of serious fatigue during the confederations while the Netherland's defense isn't regarded to be much better than Argentina's.

Agreed, johnny. Demi's passing was very bad, and as expected, he was much too slow. Good to see someone on the board who doesn't see every performance by every Argentinean player with rose colored glasses.

Zabaleta and Mascherano played well. Messi had a quiet game by his standards, but now is, apparently, the only player to have scored 30 goals in the knockout stages of CL.

City with a pretty conservative game plan with only Negredo up front. Can't say I blame them without Aguero. Pellegrini probably won't be completely disappointed with a draw and hope Aguero is fit for the next leg. Kind of a dangerous strategy though if you are looking to beat Barca at the Nou.

I don't know if I am the only person here who feels this whole Mascherano as CB thing is actually going to help our NT a lot. A CDM who has a not-so-great backline to protect all the time needs to be strong in his defense more than anything. Barcelona has kind of ensured that.

Demichelis is playing for ManCity. Barcelona are sure to score goals now.

Their problem will be Barcelona's defense. It will be interesting to see how Mascherano plays against taller opponents in such a big game....good for him and the NT.

I am also very interested in seeing how Zabaleta plays against such players. If he can play well against Barcelona, it will help his confidence a lot.

You know, one thing is to be realistic. Realistic is that in futbol.. ANYTHING can happen. In futbol you may have the best players of the generation in every position and still loose. In futbol you cant make assumptions and you cant predict outcomes, its the rising from chaos that makes it so exiting. 1 goal scored is an epic celebration.

What it is to feel the shirt of this team, wether its something born in you or a choice you made from a far away land, its a love and a passion. Even if we had Rojo as our #10 and Sosa as our #9 I would fight for the team. Even if we never qualify for the World Cup again I would fight for the team.

There are waaaay too many people on here that bash on Argentina. Waaaay too many people saying that this player or that player is a guaranteed recipy for disaster. Can it!

Yes, there are constructive critizms that can be made. But no one here needs to be pessimistic or optimistic, the reality is that we are a top ranked team both in S.America and globally with atleast half the team composed of ELITE players and a coach that has a pretty long and consistent record with phenomenal results.

We are going to bring the fight to Brasil.

EL UNICO JUGADOR QUE NO HA SIDO CONVOCADO ANTES Y AL QUE ESTAMOS EVALUANDO ES CAMBIASSO. QUE ESTA TENIENDO UN MUY BUEN NIVEL EN ALL BOYS.

cambiasso, he meant nico cambiasso from ALL BOYS (as mentioned in his twitter) not esteban. he doesn't need esteban, with mashernao, biglia, gago and banega. (although he is better than most of them)

I have a feeling the final will be between Argentina nd Germany and rojo will score the winning goal from a corner kick . Be optimistic guys; this is one of the best Argentina squads since decades! If Romero gets his confidence back before the wc only refs can stop us fm winning the cup .

I hope Messi scores today and I hope Zabaleta shuts Neymar down. The teams that I support most in EPL and La Liga are face to face tonight and one will be knocked out of the tournament. What a shame !!!

Deb masche is in no way overhyped! Gago and him are a great pair! Mascheranos recuperation is the start of our counter attacks

@Kidulthood: Do you know that Gago is just an average midfield player, or Mascherano is an overhyped guy, or Sabella doesn't have a clue what he wants with his defense? Do you know all this?

a comment in RM forum regarding dimaria , finally they are realizing the importance of dimaria

"Nice to see Di Maria getting some respect for once. He must not be sold ever. He can play in the front 3 and the mid 3 and even at fullback and he can perform to a higher standard that most.
People underestimate how difficult is to find a player whos creative, capable of scoring and assisting, fast as hell, does a huge amount of defensive contribution and can play in a variety of positions. This combination is extremely rare, and the fact that there is a downside to it (like his decision making sometimes) doesn't mean Di Maria should be undervalued and unappreciated."

Sosa in the team is always beneficial bcoz we all know our best 4 cant defend till the end . Lamela and ricky are useless in nt.... Call iturbe,enzo,gaitan,pastore...... Forget willy .....arent their argentine goalkeeper in argentine league? I heard about guzman ,riuli.......otamendi look like cannavaro type but picking him ahead of gonzalo is joke who is consistantly doing well and once voted best young deffender during villareal days. I have noticed argentine manager picked manager favorite players infact argentina have more talented and inform players.........my best 23 squad for 2014 wc are:- Keepers:-Willy,romero,riuli. Difenders:- zabaleta, campagnaro, garay,FF,gonjalo, rojo, basanta, Midfielders:-mascerano,gago,biglia,dimaria,maxi,enzo perez. Iturbe ,pastore Attacks:-messi,kun,higuain,palecio,tevez(if he is used as a sub ) otherwise LEVEZZI is OK...........

I think Lamela chance to join N/T is reducing, injured;fitness and lack of playing, Cambiasso will be call and bring in Icardi. We need a fresh and ready to combat players.

Nicolas otamendi current form is terrible. he is the weakest spot for porto wholost thier matches against benfica and sporting lisbon. i am not going to cheer otamendi for our national team. Guys please go and check from porto fc blogs and newscentre .he is not playing good this season.

But then again, with Lamela and Ricky out injured, the odds for Sosa being call up for the friendly in March are really high..I hope Sabella give Pastore another look, being that Ricky and Lamela are both on the sideline.

Pastore, Willy, Musacchio and Fazio should be added to Sabella list along with Otamendi and Orban from the Bosnia friendly..Only Argentinian players I don't want on the team are Augusto, Andujar, Ansaldi,Gonzalo, Yacob,Tevez and Sosa..

Nico Cambiasso was not the Cambiasso Sabella was referring too. He was referring to Esteban Cambiasso.

Cambiasso is now expected to be int he list for Romania. Willy is apparently no longer expected to be in the list.

We can win with Romero as keeper, especially if he improves the way he deals with crosses and set plays. That doesn't mean we cannot improve our chances with another keeper.

Romero stopped playing for his club just this year. It probably wouldn't have been a major concern if it weren't coupled with the fact that he is incredibly prone to gaffes, and that his propensity for errors improves as his reflexes suffer.

The reality is we do not know how Romero will play in the World Cup. If he is solid or better, we have an excellent chance of winning. If he is shaky, our chances diminish significantly. Hopefully he gets more playing time and he works on handling crosses and he shines or at least becomes a non-story with his play (which means he makes no errors).

Only time will tell. As for good keepers, Orion is a pretty good keeper in his own right, and in the opinion of many he is the best Argentinean keeper in the world. It's not as though Willy is our only option if Romero and Andujar wind up not playing for their clubs.

Here's hoping the keeper issue is a non-issue come Cup time. I think part of the reason Sabella is considering Cambiasso is to bolster up the defensive aspect of the team to make sure tams can't attack and cross at will to address this issue.

Romero is going to become the weakestlink for argentina.I sincerely hope willy, speroniand RIULI (ESTUDIANTES)along with Nico cambiasso(all boys)are much more deserving goalkeeper than this fucking romero. i just hope sabella will choose wisely for his team goalkeepers otherwise it will be very true AFA is the main culprit for our weak link aka romero.
