my only worry about brazil defense is , if they go for 3-5-2 set up.

-----silva---dante---luiz-----

-alves--------------------marcelo

this will give more freedom for both marcelo and alves , hope they wont go for this

If Marcelo attacks the way he does for Real, Brazil will get eaten a live on the field by Argentina..Messi and Di Maria will exploit Marcelo attacking runs..Just look at the friendly game in Jersey, once Messi passed Marcelo, no one was able to cover the two remaining CB hence Messi scoring a cracking goal..

Pachorra, Argentina's defense has shown glaring flaws that teams that will be better prepared in the World Cup and be ready to exploit unless the gaps are closed. They were very fortunate in many instances to not allow more goals, and are particularly bad at handling crosses/long balls and set pieces. Sabella has time to work on that, and hopefully Romero in particular works on his commitment and leaping ability./hands to handle crosses better.

We shouldn't worry about other teams and how good or bad they are defensively. They will be working to improve their defense and their team as a whole, and in many instances will be much better than they were in qualification. We should focus on what our weakest links are as a team and improve them to improve our chances of winning the Cup.

As for Brazil, if David Luiz is in the team, I am not too worried about their defense. I am, however, worried about Marcelo in attack, and who will pick him up. In my opinion, handling him will be the key to beating Brazil should we face them in the final.

Everybody says Argentina's defense sucks... Well, I had a few minutes and I decided to check the stats from their last 12 games and compare them with the other 9 biggest teams to compete in for the WC2014 Title... Brazil, Germany, Italy, France, England, Uruguay, Spain, Portugal and Netherlands... The results are rather surprising, at least to me... For instance, Argentina's defense allows an average of 0.92 goals per game... Germany 1.25, Spain 0.75, Brazil 0.33, Italy 1.67, France 1.00, Uruguay 1.08, England 0.92, Portugal 1.25, Netherlands 0.58... This means that, among the "10 Great", Argentina is 6th in goals received per game... Italy, according to this study, has the worst defense strategy, allowing 1.67 golas per game... On the other hand, Brazil can brag about having a "super defense", allowing only 0.33 goals per game as an average...

el pato was good, he had some chocking form just before ther world cup but he came good. penalties are saved by crap takers, not so much to do with keepers

Thr best performance of a Argentine goalie after the heroic show of Goyco in 1990 is El Pato Abbondanzieri in WC 2006. Had he not been injured, I dont know if Germany would have beaten us in PK shootout as El Pato did stop a Germany PK in a friendly before the tournament if I am not mistaken.

We all as fans have no choice but support Romero as Sabella does not seem to want to remove him.

@Emon: Great article. In Concerns field, it says

"Marcos Rojo appears to be Sabella's choice at left-back, and Sergio Romero played the entire qualifying campaign in goal. Both leave something to be desired."

So apparently the whole world knows Romero is not enough.

The way I see it about the backline... Sabella will not use any new players who played in some of the friendly matches before, and he will take players that mostly had played in the qualifiers round.
So the defenders it should be:
Zaba, Fede, Garay, Roho, Campagnaro, Basanta, and someone who have played in the qualifiers round in 2013, someone from Estudiantes. Chances is thin for Otamendi, Orban, Roncaglia, Ansaldi, Gonzalo, so we can forget about these names.

Yes hes been solid but if given a shot mussachio and rodriguez can excel way more in the nt. They have better defense and are more tactically aware since they play against better players than in the Mexican league. More things matter than just height as a defender

Dinucci and why should Basanta be replace? The guy have been solid for us...If Sabella listen to some of you guys, by the time the world cup comes around he wouldn't have a team..

those are the 7th. but he will call an 8th. possible a RB cover . Sabella likes players who can play multiple roles. e.g. basanta, campagnaro.
just to note. roncaglia - RB and RCB
Ansaldi - RB, LB, Wing back
Demichelis - CB any and DM

Garay, FF, Otamendi, Basanta, Rojo, Zabaleta, Campagnaro... Don't look any further... These are the 7 Sabella will call... Unless there is an injury...

el principe, I think that defenders will be 8: Zabaleta, FF, Garay, Rojo, Campagnaro, Basanta, Orban, Otamendi/Roncaglia. But pair CB Musacchio - Rodriguez would be nothing less than FF - Garay. But this is Sabella's choice.

Honestly I think Sabella will call only 7 defenders for the worldcup also have we forgotten mascherano can be played as a cb wouldn't be surprised to see him there in a 3 man defense.

i agree with veterans
even in passarellas youth team he had chamot and sensini
bielsa took chamot
Sanuel is solid, but is SLOW now very slow. but he can score goals. ive never seen campagnaro, just heard he can play multiple positions. but he is 34 soon. ansaldi is younger and esp gonzalo rodrigues, in my mind the biggest omission. samuel, camapganro, demichelis are ok in a 3 man defense

I am pretty sure that Sabella will only take 7 defenders, not 8.

23 players:
3 goalies
7 defenders
8 midfielders
5 forwards

A little thin in the back, but an extra space in midfield.

Secondly, it seems like all 7 defenders are set. However, Walter Samuel was playing great and scored the only goal of the match 2 days ago. He replaced another veteran Hugo Campagnaro in the starting line up who has been disappointing lately.

After the game, Inter coach praised the 35 year old Samuel and called him "world class defender" and that Inter do need a veteran defender in the back. Does that mean that Samuel has replaced Campagnaro in the starting line up? If so, it is not good news for Sabella.

All 7 defenders but Otamendi have no experience in the world cup. Even Otamendi is still pretty young, so he's not considered a WC veteran at all. Maybe Sabella should think twice about this. Why not include at least one veteran defender at least? Their experience would be worthy. No guys, I am not talking about Demichelis, Burdisso, Zanetti, or Coloccini... or Heinze.

8th defender will be between peruzzi or ansaldi.
sabella would want a rb cover for zabaleta.
ansaldi has advantage of playing LB too. peruzzi is young and one for future

For me Playing Rojo as a LB isn't playing him out of position, it's just his playing style which is a slight problem. Remember we have Di maria as LCm, which means the LB doesn't have to do much going forward duty...our LB should play like a LCB...that's why I think sabella plays him there...But Mr. Rojo like to think he is Roberto Carlos...and makes many mistakes like going forward and not hurrying back, which needs to be changed!

@cleanball : Yes , playing a player not in his natural position is like a timebomb that tickling..

we have done with ottamendi, jonas in last time.
now we are doing the same with rojo , hopefully sabella will make right move

Forget the Otamendi of 2010 version and build the fresh and natural Otamendi in 2014, as this player is a rock

He will be acclimated to the stadiums and weather in Brazil if this turns out to be the case. And Sabella will use him as a CENTERBACK.....so it would not be a bad pick.

I am all for Cambiasso and Otamendi in the team, Sabella is no fool, this world cup is going to take more than flair and pretty football..Cambiasso and Otamendi will get dirty to get the job done..So now we have Two assassin in midfield (Masche and Cambiasso) with our other stylish midfield players in Gago, Biglia,Banega, Maxi, Alvarez, Lamela or Pastore..

Don't worry @baker, our defenders is in a great shapes, and now probably Otamendi is coming, that is such a great news, don't you think? Our defenders are at this point, UNBREAKABLE by any teams you can think of.

i cant find him in inter stating 11 , that why i doubted.
hugo is versatile player he can be in CB,RB and LB so he is a sure shot in our team.

we have to go for 8 defenders or 7 defenders...?
i will pick 8 defenders since sabella have the tendency to go for 5 men defense , having 8 defenders will be a plus.

No surprise here, although I would like Musacchio over Otamendi, his performance vs Bosnia kind of sealed his world cup spot. As I always say all these defenders going to the world cup;

1. Garay

2.F Fernandez

3. Zabaleta

4. Campagrano

5. Rojo

6. Basanta

7. Otamendi

8. ( ? )
