Argentina NT coaches have regularly made blunders on WC selection. But if Caballero is not picked for WC14, this will eclipse all previous shockers including zanetti , cambiasso , Redondo, riquelme ... in all other cases - coaches atleast had decent options.( its like dropping tevez in WC14 ). GK - we just don't have an decent option now & Caballero is consistently playing good. easily qualifies as a world top10 goalkeeper in last 12 months .

@travis

I understand your feeling, but trust me, Saja is also in good form.In my opinion, maybe we can assume that willy & saja are fighting for a position except orion and romero.

Sabella will definitely improve the GK problem, but willy may not be the "definite one"

The winter transfers are gone now. And it's confirmed that Romero is not going anywhere. So he will either struggle or pull off some miracle in Brazil if our No.1 goalie. In either assumptions or cases, Sabella would not trust him anymore. He will have to look beyond finally.

Andujar isn't at his best either. Orion can't be picked in the next and last friendly due to injuries as I hear. So that makes Caballero's case extremely strong for this Romania match. Sabella pushed his luck quite a lot, but nothing happened. Romero's situation didn't improve a bit, Andujar's worsened. I think it is only upto this point that Sabella had planned to wait and watch.

He has to act now. Let's just hope.

I'm not sure the real reason why Willy has not once been call up by Sabella.

Willy is in a good form, infact, better than any goalkeeper you can name it right now. This few months he showed it all, there's nothing more he can do about his quality to make everyone believe he is such a good goalie. So what he can do, and keep doing, is to keep playing at his best everytime. Unlucky for him, he is in Malaga.

I don't see or ever read about his attitude problem, it seems to me that he has no attitude problem of some sort. He's no a drunken fool, he's no womanizer, he's a family man, it's so clear, if you read his story.
On the field, he took control his back line all the time. If anyone of you ever read about his problem with team mates, coaches or managers, or in dressing room, let me know that.

So what is the main Willy Caballero problem that a good coach such as Sabella didn't even call him once to play for a NT in this crucial moment?? (yes, it's crucial, both our 1st n 2nd goalie is in big trouble, left the 3rd that never has a minute in the NT)

If Willy Caballero didn't get a call up, at least there should be a reason for that, and we all should at least know it to understand it, but where is it??? Sabella didn't even says anything about it.

It seems to me that this decision didn't came from Sabella alone, something or someone must have a big influenced on his decision, and that is for me, the almighty Grondona, and the entirely AFA (and for the last time fuck em all!!!).

I don't know, I give up. I just want to see the best from Argentina this June, that's all.

Baker has a good point, although Sabella is no fool so the GK situation will not be ignored. Sabella likes low key players, he himself is very passive when it comes to media statements. That's something that everyone here who watches Argentine futbol can admire.

@baker If that's the main reason Willy didn't get picked this WC, then i would hate Sabella even more, and he is not just stubborn then but an idiot as well.
What Willy said days ago is very true.
If Sabella really care so much about the NT, that's what he should do, his job; pick the best players.

If he didn't pick some in form midfielder or one greatest forward ever then I can understand, but he didn't pick the inform goalkeeper, that's the problem. He would rather pick that lame out of form Romero which situation at the moment is not just worst, but worsen.

There's nothing wrong with Willy's statement, infact that was a very right statement.
The only wrong is Sabella refuse to call him yet. We'll see if he would.

well we all know sabella is stubborn.
after superb performance against RM , willy made it clear he looking for a spot in NT . it is understandable and sabella replied him saying "he is evaluating everyone"

but now he said "those who are in good form only should play for NT"
i didnt felt anything with these statement either..

but put yourself in a managers position , and a player making a statement who is not in your team , such as willy made.
what do you feel as a manager..? , i mean it indicates you as a manager couldnt even figure out whether your team members are in form or not..?

my doubts are whether sabeela will take it as a positive criticism...?

am not sure , thats why am doubting willys selection

In case the rumors turn out to be true, our backline would be operating between two of the greatest fighters in modern football - Javier Mascherano and Willy Caballero. That would make them a hundred times less vulnerable. They have an extra rock-solid shield above them, and in case that shield is penetrated they have the chance to prove themselves. If they fail and lose the ball, they still have a huge confidence behind as well, someone who can pull off shot-stopping miracles on a regular basis.

Zabaleta is okay. If he is not to be trusted, there aren't many fullbacks in world football to be trusted now I guess!! Of course he sometimes gets caught on speed, but that doesn't bother me for Argentina. Since he has a much withdrawn role for NT.

My first 11 against Romania (if Willy gets a call):

Orban
Mascherano
Biglia

Aguero and Huiguin are going to shine in the WC, we know that. The key is DiMaria, if he can display a top World Class performance, Argentina will be difficult to beat, IF, they play solid team unity defense.

I did not watch the City vs Chelsea game, but I read that Zabaleta had a tough time with Hazard, is that true?

I'm still worried about our fullbacks, against top World Class wing player's. I know, ever team has a weakness.

You think Sabella will go 4-4-2 against speedy wing players or go with 5-3-2 / 3-5-2, or go with the 4-3-3 Fab 4, say against Germany, its way to early to tell, I know.

Can't wait until the World Cup, Vamos Argentina!

@ForeverBatiGol-Demichelis did as well as he could as fill in for Fernandinho. He hasn't played much as a DM in a while. Fernandinho definitely was missed but you can't lay all the blame on Demi. He just isn't fast enough to play as a DM against top flight competition.

In addition he has beat out Nastasic as a partner for Kompany.

Get a grip. You think Demi is going to cost City the quadruple ?! Absurd. Go back to eating your cheerios and fruitloops.

Chelsea players & coach should thank demichelis for the victory! unbelievable performance again from demichelis!

@Kidult

As someone who always followed Barca for years, in my opinion yes Masche is one of the best DM in the world, without doubt. After Makelele retired, I can hardly think about better defensive minded DM than him. However, Masche does not have what it takes to be the DM Barca need.

3-4 years ago when Masche just arrived at Barca from Liverpool, everyone believed that he would make Barca midfield unbeatable because he's different from Busquets and would just make Barca better. The coach, Pepe tried to play him DM. He would rotate him with Busquets. Busquets would play the important games (CL usually and big matches), Masche would play the less important games. He was struggling in the beginning, but after 6 months, he seemed to look much better. I even thought that he already looked as good as Busquets was at DM. I mean they both are different, but both looked good for Barca.

However after some injuries to the defenders like Puyol, Abidal etc forced someone to play DC as Barca did not have that many players there. At first Pepe tried the taller Busquets as DC and Masche as DM, which made sense, but Busquets did not appear to be the answer as he's not that defensive minded enough to be a good DC. So after a few games, Pep decided to rotate the position of Masche, who actually already quite mastered DM for Barca and Busquets.

The result was exquisite! Barca looked unbeatable and Masche (AT THAT TIME, NOT NOW) turned out to be one of the best DC in the world. Busquets at DM also becomes the number 1 DM in the world that brought a lot of trophies for both Barca and Spain.

That continues up until now.

So if we're talking about getting Masche back as DM, well it will not happen. Masche will need to play as DM for at least 1 full season as key player in order to master that position. The reason is DM in Barca is a position where you are required to think quick and needs to be OFFENSIVE MINDED who's good at distributing the ball quickly with quick passes. Masche is not that type of DM. He's more like Makelele, who actually happened to be Masche's role model, type of DM: a hard nosed, tough, strong DM who won't allow anybody to get past him.

After spending years at Barca, I still have yet to see Masche's major improvements in quick passing. He still has tendency to hold the ball for 0.5-1 second before passing (watch him closely if you don't believe me). That's not what Barca need in their one dimensional tiki taka tactic.

@kid, I really liked that line up! It really puts another dimension to the structure of Barcelona. I wish that they would use that but Barcelona are slaves to the 4-3-3 system. They need to change from time to time with two holding defensive midfielder but most probably never will.

Off topic: I think Tata should use this line up against tough opposition.

-------------------Valdes---------------------

----Pique/Puyol---------------Bartra/Puyol

--Alves---------------------------------Adriano

-------Mascherano--------------Busquet--------

--------------------Iniesta------------------------

--------------------Messi---------------------------

--Neymar--------------------------------------Alexis

Tata should try this line up, I don't know why Tata don't flex is muscle..Mascherano is quick and physical it would be great for him to play against the top teams..Xavi-Busquet-Iniesta/Fabregas midfield is oldnews now and that midfield is not physical enough..song seems lost every time he plays for Barcelona. Its time Tata step up and be the coach that win the title with Newell's Old Boys..

What you guys think about my line up?

Sabella first 11 against Brazil 2014 wc team:
Romero, Zaba, Fede, Garay, Roho, Mascherano, Gago, Maria, Messi (c), Kun, Hig.
Expected line-up from Sabella, his best, but still weak in 2 position: both the goalie, and left back and for sure Brazil will try to exploit that, Rojo will be exposed, and Romero will be a joke. Chances for both team 50/50.

Travis first 11 against Brazil 2014 wc team:
Caballero, Zaba, Gonzalo R, Garay, Ansaldi, Mascherano, Gago, Maria, Messi (c), Kun, Hig.

My best, the best, no question about that. The backline, mid and forward, perfect. Best Argentina line-up ever. Brazil will have no chances whatsoever breaking into our tough defenders, but of course first they have to face Mascherano. Who? Neymar? Hulk? hahaha, they're laughable. Mascherano is twice as strong as the actual "Hulk". No problem gettin' into Brazil mid, defenders, and we'll see some goals into their net. DEFINTELY A WIN

Tata should not have the blame totally at his feet for barcas troubles as a barca coach only gets what he is given and defenders are not what is promised in the barca elections, its always the big names like the neymars of this world that are promised if elected.
basically its always a pissing contest between barca and real, mine is bigger then yours etc.

Do you guys know if Real Madrid's and Barcelona's weak defense will be reflected on the Spanish national team? It seems likely Argentina will play Spain in the world cup, and a weak defense on their part will seal their fate against our super attack.

travis Just watch and see, Perez will get Ronaldo red card over turn by the Spanish federation..They wont allow Ronaldo to miss the Villarreal game, which is a tough game..Real cant afford anymore bad result at this stage in the league.

If Atleti defeat Real Madrid at the Calderon they will be in the driver seat to lift the la Liga title.

Tata should have noted and understand very well since Tito era that the defense in the main issue for Barca, this is a good lesson for Sabella not to rely and happy with the best mid and forwarder only. Balance and strong synergize team are needed to win the games.

@Arg2014..
"1) defending against set pieces (corner kicks in particular).
2) coming with plan B against super disciplined and organized defence (aka park the bus with competency)."

Sounds like Argetina at the Copa America, Barca needs Sosa! lol..

Or sacking of the old guard, (Demichelis + Burdiso = Puyol + Pique) with two solid young tall defenders and creating better service for Messi by freshening up the midfield.. still scratch my head why they sold Thiago..

Hilarious debates on Barca vs City guys...keep it up!!!

But not as much hilarious as seein' the best footballer in the world of 2013 got red carded, I don't think that ever happened in history of the Ballon'...but just remind me if there's any (at least that never happened to the "Magician").

@cleanball: it's not a matter of a wake up call anymore....Barca's defence is so fragile and unreliable that caused some fissure/damage to the midfield personnel. Counterattack on the other hand is not lethal as its used to be 2 seasons back....Also they still are unable to deal with 2 prominent issues:
1) defending against set pieces (corner kicks in particular).
2) coming with plan B against super disciplined and organized defence (aka park the bus with competency).

All that is coaching problems.....even without signing new defenders, Tata failed to improve or discover the available talents in his disposal, in fact Mascherano who was a beast all clubs fear under Guardiola era, he's now losing some of defending qualities, Iniesta, busquests and Xavi are now history (nothing has to do with age, Iniesta in particular)....improper training is the main reason.....Give me one name in Barca that has shined through Tata's feat....the answer is none.

The second half of Barca performance really scared me. Tata have lost the momentum to build a wall in his defense during January transfer window; everybody seems to play with their own ego not and stumbled. Although Pizi's strategy did help Valencia to restore their pride and spirit. But one lost is good for Barca, it's a waking up call.

Barca are so stupid to pass on aguero when he was available. Imagine aguero at barca with messi, that would be dream come true, perfect attack for both club and NT. Such a disgrace.

I don't know if you heard the story that came out last week or so, about how Neymar's father was PAID by Barcelona back in 2011 to secure his signing by them.

No wonder they passed so easily on Super Kun when he came available!

I don't see Martino getting sacked just yet, i feel like he got screwed big time with the acquisition of Neymar. Yes Neymar is a fantastic player but Barca didn't help with the offense, i think with Roselli stepping down hopefully more freedom will be giving to Martino to sign who he wants.

Guys look at the bright side, Argentina now have a lot of prominent coach in Europe..Pizi win yesterday showed the world that he's a coach of the highest order and not some banana league coach..Like Dfox said, this is a world cup year and everything else come second..I cant even remember when was the last time our first XI played together,I 'm so anxious for the Romania game to come around, and I hope everyone will be healthy..

I don't see Tata staying with the club after this year but all we care about is ARGENTINA winning the world Cup and everything football related comes a distant 2nd.

I would say this though, I'm glad he's an Argentine for the obvious reason.

Messi quote:

Martino took over at Camp Nou in July 2013 after Tito Vilanova left his position with the Spanish champions, having suffered a cancer relapse.

Messi feels the former Newell's Old Boys boss has brought his own ideas to the club.

"Every coach has his own ideas," the Argentine told reporters.

"We had Tito before, but maybe we didn't see any differences with (Pep) Guardiola's style because he was working besides him and most of the squad already knew his style.

"However, now with Tata, who came from outside the club, we can feel the difference."

Messi added that Vilanova's health issues had proved difficult for the players to deal with, particularly in light of Eric Abidal's battle against liver cancer.

"It was tough for everybody because it happened after Abidal's cancer and then it was Tito," he continued

"It was very complicated because the dressing room loved Tito and Abidal, and it was a great blow for the whole squad."

You can tell that Messi is unhappy with the new tactic. Just read between the lines: "However, now with Tata, who came from outside the club, we can feel the difference."

Regardless of Messi's form now....I can see Barcelona losing all 3 titles this season: Copa, La Liga, and Cl which they don't stand a chance from the first place. Messi performed better under Guardiola and even under Tito....I don't see the new coaching benefits him or other players....no skill improvement. Now, Messi with the national team has a different role and program....If Barcelona get knocked out of CL earlier and loses the league in the final stages (early May), then Messi should be all ready to hit the world cup with a good stamina.

I don't see Barcelona beat R.Madrid at the Bernabeau or even beat A.Madrid in the last match....tactically there is a huge difference. Perhaps Messi to Bayern after the WC despite that quote of finishing my career with Barca. I can see it coming.

This would probably be 1-3 or 0-3 without messi to be honest, and people say barca plays better without him, that was the biggest joke ever. Remember when Messi was out, they lost 2 in a row to bad opponents failing to score, but their defense held up, that wasn't that bad, imagine they had this terrible defense along with the terrible offense back then, it would be much more embarrassing. Messi alone made this game winnable by himself, barca fans need to be more grateful for Messi, if not for Messi, they are no where to be seen. All major sites are praising Messi for his great play yesterday, I just don't get why fans expect Messi to score a brace or hattrick to be considered playing well??? I guess Messi himself set the bar too high that even himself will have hard time reaching once in a while. To me, since Messi came back, he's been playing so well, He just haven't had the luck to score as much as he did in the past, and once he gets over the hump, he will score nonstop with ease, mark my words.

I heard Tata had a conversation with Messi before the Valencia game, and it was said that it had nothing to do with the Valencia game..I can imagine Tata saying to Messi, ''you're the best, no need to try and prove anything to anyone, we need u also for the world cup in Brazil..''
Kidult: Wow. If Tata really was speaking to Messi this words that impresses me. All Argentinian have one aim. What a solodarity with Sabella. We have two coaches.

Some comments about Messi in bleacherreport.com:

"Lionel Messi has been back from injury for a while now and he is finally starting to show his regular unbelievable self.

The Argentine was involved in both of Barcelona goals on the night, giving an assist and scoring from the penalty spot later in the match. Messi was by far Barcelona's most dangerous player and he made his presence felt.

Messi was able to get eight shots off during the match, but the most incredible statistic was that he also won a total of nine dribbles. He was everywhere.

In truth, Messi was the only real bright spot for Barcelona. Without him this match could have ended up being a lot worse for La Blaugrana. There is always a silver lining, and this time it is that Messi looked very good."
