good choice as Slovenia and Bosnia have the same profile. ideally another one against Belgium(for France or Switzerland). They should know how to keep their force for later stage. during the prev WC, they were very good in the first 3 games but start to perform badly in 1/8 before getting knocked out in quarter. that's why they need to take Bosnia and Iran seriously in order to get qualified after the first 2 games and let the major players take a break on the third one. In quarter-final, Argentina will probably play Belgium or Portugal, which will be very tough but feasible if our players are in good condition.

Who are you going to watch this weekend? No Higuain, Messi, Aguero, Zabaleta, and maybe Lamela. So football is not interesting this weekend.

Argentina coach Alejandro Sabella won the 2009 Copa Libertadores in the city's Mineirao stadium with Estudiantes..So Sabella has the success already in Brazil to win championship..I'm telling you man, God have bless Argentina with this world cup draw, with the players location in Brazil and the path to the final..Mind you while all the other contenders are battling against other contenders in the group stage Argentina will be taking relatively easy in the group stage; saving themselves energy, less bookings and injuries..For team like Spain and Germany I think they will be at a disadvantage at the wc given the long club season they will be coming off, then they will have to both play in tough groups at the world cup..For me Italy will be the toughest European team in Brazil.

Maradona; Argentina will win the world cup.

Diego Maradona says Argentina will win the World Cup in Brazil, but that it cannot ignore the threat posed by Spain and Italy.

The Albiceleste qualified in pole position from the CONMEBOL standings and were drawn in Group F alongside Bosnia and Herzegovina, Iran, and Nigeria for next year's showpiece in Brazil.

Argentina last won the World Cup in 1986, beating West Germany 3-2 in the final, and Maradona, who played in the Mexico tournament, believes the current national team can repeat the feat his side managed.

"There will be a repeat of 1986 in Brazil. Argentina will be world champions. Germany and Netherlands are also very good, both Spain and Italy cannot be ignored," he told Sport.

Maradona also says his country's people do not appreciate what they have in Barcelona star Lionel Messi.

He added: "We Argentinians don't know how to enjoy what we have, in football and in life in general. There's always something to compare it to. Messi should be left alone, don't compare him any more."

Every team goes into a pre WC camp to iron out their weaknesses and improve their strengths, and they come out different. Hence some teams struggle thru qualifiers but do well at the WC. Take note that the 40-day camp will be the first time Sabella will be working with the squad for full month. Maybe he'll bring in some new players, who knows? And this where he'll be able to translate his ideas to his players thoroughly. He said some ago that he'd like to arrive at WC in tip top shape. So after that he'll want to see his final tactics at work a friendly going before going into the WC, that's why the Slovenia game, for me will be the most important friendly in the Sabella-era. For example, both our full-backs need assistance from midfielders and fellow defenders to protect the flanks but many Rojo-haters here can't see that most of the times, he's left alone to deal with opposite winger and fullback individually. But these things can only be addressed in pre-WC training camp. In one interview coach said the Fantastic 4 will have to learn sacrifice n defend when we not in possession, so far we've not seen that but he maybe he'll enforce it the camp. So that's why the coach needs to have one last look at his team set-up.

@ el negro... i think for barcelona Mascherano plays well as CB because of their possession football style. it involves less aerial attacks & more 1 on 1 situations, which are ideal for Mascherano. But u may've noticed, most of the mistakes done by Mascherano in barca r during aerial battles. it's obviuos, we dont play like them. our defense will have to face more aerial threats during WC due to our counter-attack playing style. so, in my opinion, garay-fed pairing is good since they r playing together for quite a long time. our CB back ups should be Gonzalo Rodríguez, mateo musacchio & otamendi. colo is too inconsistent. the only problem is LB position, of which i really dont have any clue.

I wouldn't say Argentina have the quality of beating any top team out there.. Unless Argentina straighten up their defense, they simply of the quality of SCORING against any top team our there.

Kenneth I agree, I'm sick of hearing we need to play a big team before the world cup..By the way, we have already played against; Spain, Nigeria,Portugal, Brazil (twice), Switzerland, Germany, Sweden, Italy and Bosnia and not to mention playing all South American teams twice in over 2 years..I will trust Sabella to out smart any European team in Brazil..Gods willing and Argentina make it to the semis their is no team out their that will stop us at that point..

Argentina need no big friendlies ATM, all that matter now is to get the team functioning as a coherent unit, from back to mid to forward.

I am not really into seeing Fernandez partnering Garay. On top of that, Argentina have Romeo who is perhaps the worst amongst Argentina's three goalkeepers. Following Argentina's friendly against Brazil, Sabella should have reconsidered Argentina's back-line. Brazil pretty much skinned the defense alive in a match the should have ended 4-1 in favor of Argentina. Considering that little to no change will be made to Argentina's back-line, we should just hope for the best if/when we stumbled upon teams like Germany, Spain, Brazil, Portugal, Netherlands... You name it..

Theoretically, Mascherano is not a center back. However, when considering Argentina's options for center backs, Mascherano is probably the best we have at the moment. The guy just play great as a CB. It's not because of Pique or Puyol. Following the 2010 World Cup, Pique is nothing more than just a shadow of his former self. Mascherano was at times preferred over Puyol due to age factor and so on.. With that being said, If Puyol wasn't going through those injuries after the 2010 World Cup, Pep Guardiola would favored Mascherano over Pique.. There were games where Mascherano was featured in 3-man defense for Barcelona and he prevailed... That shows how great of a CB Mascherano is..

With Mascherano in defense alongside either Fernandez and Garay, our back-line would immensely improved. As a former leader, Mascherano would bring leadership to our defense.. He would give orders to his fellow CB, which is something our defense is lacking at the moment.. I am not even going to mention Rojo, another headache in Argentina's back-line..

We've played against the top teams already and beat em..in friendlies anyways. I'm really hoping Romania and Slovenia come out defending with 11 and counter attacking, because honestly this is the only way i see us getting knocked out. I believe we have the quality of beating any big team out there, as long as they don't park the bus.*cough* Brazil under Dunga * cough*

In an open free flowing game, there is nobody who can match our talent. Football is full of surprises though, you never know, we could get knocked out by some random European team refusing to cross their halfway line. This is why people always say that to win the world cup you need some luck. Well, i think it's about damn time we got lucky.

I don't think that Argentina should be playing a friendly so close to the WC for fear of important players getting injured as Kid already mentioned. If they do play, Sabella should use that game to test players that are more likely to be sitting on the bench for the majority of the WC.

Didn't the last friendlies shown a lot of mistakes and problem already??? I don't need to watch one more friendly to see Argentina weaknesses.

To play Slovenia in June is like a warm up before the tournament kick off. At that time, there's no time to search for whatever mistakes and then fix them, because at that time, the squad should be in 100% great shapes, already better in everything, and just think about winning.

Do you think Sabella need to wait until June to see his obvious mistake about making Romero as the 1st goalie? but that's just one and there's more problem, isn't there??

Why don't Argentina have friendly with better opponent? I think it will be handy in learning mistakes and in knowing where we stand right now. It will make team better as world cup is round the corner.

I like it - not a top team but not a walkover either, I can see us scoring quite a few goals and getting confident before heading to Brazil.

but even though lavezzi and palacio played their heart out and score some goal for NT , still people are trying to crucify them ...

Erik Lamela to stay at Hotspur?

Amidst rumors hat Italian clubs are interested in acquiring Erik Lamela on loan for the second half of the season after the Argentine star failed to settle in England, Italian journalist Alfredo Pedulla is reporting that Tottenham Hotspur are not interested in loaning him out. He pointed out links to Inter Milan and Napoli, stating that the rumors have no reason to exist.

That says that Tottenham intend to get the most out of their investment in Lamela, and that his poor performances were at least partially due to poor management by Andre Villas-Boas. They believe that he will return to his previous form and that it's not time to give up on him becoming a first team player this season.

As someone who is a big believer in Lamela, this is excellent news, and I'm hoping that Pedulla has good information in this case. I'm looking forward to seeing Tim Sherwood integrate Lamela into the starting XI.

-----

Andy Townsend is out for months. Lamela should stay at Hotspur then.

The reason he did not play last night was due to a minor injury I heard.

Slovenia is a good opponent before worldcup. Argentina do not need to play against physically taugh opponent before worldcup. Somebody might get injured. I m also worried for LB situation in argentina though ROJO is gradually doing well. Hope he will continue his good work.

Baker this is yet another Man United article linking Garay to the club for a move in January. I don't think Garay will go to Napoli because he was always close to a move with Man United...Garay was even in England looking for a house earlier this year..One more thing I heard Rafa was trying to get Daniel Agger on a loan move to Napoli in January.

Cleanball I don't think we need to play an African team, we played against Ecuador three times already and they're as physical as any African team..Romania and the Slovenia games are good enough before the world cup..These friendlies so close to the world cup can be dangerous too, especially playing against teams that are not going to the world cup..hint, hint; sometimes players on these teams try to hurt potential world cup stars going into the cup, I see this happen time and time again and I wouldn't want any of our major players getting injury in these friendlies so close to the tournament...
