Argentina meets Pope, LAMELA starts in training

The Argentina National Team as well as the Italian National Team both met the Pope on Tuesday and afterwards, Erik LAMELA got the start ahead of Maxi in training.

The Argentina National Team met Pope Francis, an Argentinian as they took pictures with him. The players also met the Italian National Team. Following the team's trip to the Vatican, Erik LAMELA was part of the line-up in training ahead of Maxi RODRIGUEZ. Here was the line-up:

ANDUJAR, CAMPAGNARO, GARAY, FERNANDEZ, BASANTA; DI MARIA, BIGLIA, MASCHERANO, LAMELA; PALACIO and HIGUAIN.

Pablo ZABALETA and Sergio ROMERO are both doubtful and doesn't look like they will start. In SABELLA's first training session, it was the same line-up with Maxi over LAMELA. However, LAMELA started ahead of Maxi in the last one. Note that this is not the official line-up.

I thought Ansaldi was called up and yet, Sabella is trying to play Basanta out of position. Does that make sense?

Now, out of the names above, Maxi and Palacio shouldn't be in the WC!
Scocco next to Higuain would've looked better than Palacio.

However, it seems that Sabella's plan B or shall we call it MESSIless plan is a 4,4,2.

If I could do some changes to the form out of the players Sabella selected, my 4,4,2 would be:

Campagnaro, Fernandez, Garay, Ansaldi, Augusto, Biglia, Mascherano, Di Maria, Lamela and Higuain.

I'd use Augusto as a right midfielder and pair Lamela upfront with Higuain.

According to the article. Lamela will be the left sided midfielder. Di Maria the right sided. Zabaleta might also start as he trains normally.

I wonder why not Di Maria as a left sided and Lamela as a right sided. They both are good as right sided midfielder, but Di Maria is A LOT better as a left sided midfielder as it is his natural position.

I wouldn't worry about the 2 towers guys, don't forget that they shut down Falcao, Cavani/suarez and Zlatan on separate occasions. If Garay continues with his upward trajectory he will be considered world class soon while Federico has shut down Falcao completely and has been fantastic almost every time he's on the pitch either with the albicelestes or Getafe (for god's sake napoli, wake up and small the potential sheesh!).
The real issue for the NT are the full backs, Zaba might be capable or even world class when he plays for city but he's decent at best with the NT, while Rojo is the one true weak link in Sabella's otherwise well oiled machine. Having Campagnero is a blessing while Peruzzi is the future (not the present) but some 1 needs to step up and relegate Rojo to the bench, I'm hoping Ansaldi can do that but it's gonna be an uphill battle if Sabella is more willing to put a center back like Basanta in the full back position than to give ansaldi a chance.

I am Happy that Messi is not playing in this game...I woulda been happier if we had to face Super Mario so we know where Garay and FF stands at the moment.

I would also like to see us without Mash in one of those friendly's b4 the WC.

Lamela and Higs would score I have feeling....

Im very satisfied with these players as a possible plan B. This game will text our backline even though in my opinion its been pretty solid. Glad to see Lamela included even though I rather see Pastore. Realistically Lamela has proven himself over Pastore. I hope Palacio shines bright! He is very sharp and fast. I hope he brings his "A" game! Palacio has also proven himself at club level so he stays on board. Great test for our team overall.

I see where Bilardo is standing very close to the Pope. I don't know whether that's good for Bilardo or bad for the Pope. A force for the devil against a force for good.

The only way i see pastore playing is in 4-2-3-1 behind higuain if Messi is injured but banega should do just fine if he plays

Andujar, Basatna and Palacio should be replaced with Romero, Zabaleta and Messi, and since they are injured then Willy, Ansaldi, and Pastore should take place !!

Lamela needs to start since the game is at Roma. He is the crowd second favorite player after Totti. I remember when Argentina beat Italy in WC 1990 semis, the game was at Naples, the home of the famous of their hero, Diego Maradona. Zenga's Italy never conceded any goal before the game, but we won :) The x factor.

Its just Barcelona's upper management being a bunch of pansies, especially since they open their season early Sunday morning.

I was watching a special on Messi on Beinsport channel and one of the many things they talked about was his white muscle fiber! Now, I'm not a doctor nor will I pretend to be but this is what was said. Muscle fiber comes in 3 colors, red, grey and white, and white being the best case scenario for football players and as u might have guess it, Messi has a ton of it. Having said that, athletes with white muscle fiber are more prone to muscle injures, hence the many injuries La pulga sustained early on in his career but has passed that phase by being in incredible shape, eating right and doing exactly what his doctors and trainers tell him to do.

Think about it how much free time did he get this summer? 2weeks, 3 without playing.

Is it just me or does it seem like messi is breaking down more often because of all the games he is playing? Also, I would have liked to see icardi on this team as well as zanetti for a show of class. Zanetti deserves it.

Mafioso, kuddos for that awesome formation, it's just about the perfect formation when messi isn't available. I think Banega can truly shine in the position that you put him in as contrary to popular belief Banega is more of a Riquelme or an Aimar than a Gago; he's essentially an enganche with the added benefit of a defensive mentality and that's why I believe he's been able to shine for Valencia but not for the albicelestes

Leandro, I know right!!! Lamela!!!! It's looking likely that we may get our wish and see that 4 man midfield that you conceived a few months back.
If Coco does get to start it's gonna be ALL UP TO HIM to show that he can match Di-maria on the opposite side and pull in a double duty for the team.
Alot of people have compared the albicelestes to Barca but to be honest Argentina is very unique with it's fantastic -4-horsemen setup; however if the lamela-dimaria-biglia(usually gago)-Masch does happen and proves to be effective I can see Argentina being more comprable to Bayren (+ messi & more offensive power and minus the defensive prowess) than to Barca and being like Bayren is just about the biggest compliment one could give.

@Mafioso, I agree with your tweak.. although this is Palacios real chance to impress, he is playing in Italy and not at altitude, whishing him the best.. he can be a sharp finisher when he is on.

@Jack, The way @Mafioso has Banega I think he can be usefull (as an enganche) since he can be offensive and help defend pretty well.. however Banega is a poor athlete and for the double #5s we need players with tenatious stamina and relentless work ethic.. Biglia and Gago have the upper hand in that respect. Banega is just too slow to match Mascherano.. in a 4 man midfield sure!.. but with just 2 holding the pocket I think he will be overan by 80% of opponents.

Personally, I would rather see Banega in the starting line up than Biglia since Banega has been on fire during pre-season. But, Biglia is a fresh face and hope to see more of him. I am glad we are at least somewhat deep in that area. Gago,Banega,Biglia. I think all 3 could play a bit more further or even play in the attack(Banega and Gago mainly). Not bad, not bad.

As both Gago and Messi are absent, our midfield play and creativity does not look sharp.I will replace Palacio with Banega, use him as hole playmaker in a 4-2-3-1 formation and Di maria-lamela as wingers. It is still a good team with quality players and better midfield play.I don't think Palacio will add much.
