Diego MARADONA: "I exploded at 26"

Diego MARADONA has continued his backing of Lionel MESSI in his latest comments to the media.

When speaking to DeporTV, MARADONa said that MESSI 'has an incredible future" and gave his comments about MESSI being captain.
"Leo is an fantastic kid, with a family he cares for. He's still only 25, I exploded at 26; he has an incredible present and a incredible future. What are  they going to say now, those who questioned him because he hadn't scored for the national team? Those things are said by people who have never been on a football pitch."

It was under Diego MARADONA where Lionel MESSI played his first match as a captain, against Greece at the 2010 World Cup.
"I saw him in that position, as a leader, you don't have to be a charlatan to be a good captain. I was right."

Leandro I too used to think that diego would make a wonderful mascot, but then I realized this is DIEGO! the man is a tornado with 2 legs (in and out of the football field) and the very thing that made him a great captain would now make him a horrible team player because I can't imagine diego standing by the sidelines, he would interfere with everything and some1 like sabella wouldn't have any breathing space. So I'd keep diego as far away from the team as possible, he paid his dues and then some and his time has now passed.

Diego is god on the pitch as a player...he made everyone believe that impossible was nothing...the imperialistic countries that took advantage of third world countries in the global economy all fell to the hands of a pibe from the barrios of Lanus...that said...his decision to go with a 4-3-3 against germany after we just beat germany in germany 2 months earlier with a 4-4-2 still haunts me...he cant not be around the NT again other than a pre-game speech maybe...

Agreed with Mr.D. Diego, even when he is the "good" Diego, is still way too much of a distraction to have near the NT. He continues to crave attention, and it would only be a matter of time before he created some sort of mess.

@Leandro Diego as an assistant!?! How many minutes would it take before he starts undermining the head coach?

The things that make Diego great (including his outspokenness) are exactly what make him a bad coach.

Leandro: so true, I'm sure Banega was somewhat drunk when his own car ran over his foot. This guy injuries himself!

And Diego will never, never, never ever be a good coach, not now, not in a hundred years. He hasn't changed a bit since he ruined Racing and Mandiyú. Then he ruined our NT. Then Al Wasl. And now they're saying Argentinos Jrs. wants him on the bench just so he can also ruin the club that gave him the chance to be a football player. His vision of football involves way too much personal dramatism (being confrontational just about every stupid detail with the media, AFA, FIFA and the public who, according to his mindset, is always in a 'they're either with me or against me' mood) and too little actual tactical concers.
When it comes to motivation, modern football is not about glory and making history anymore. Players are pro's and they couldn't care less about anything other than getting a good transfer — like Conca to China. Maradona is just trouble, a lot of trouble and pressure.

Shinobushinobu: sadly he will never do that either. He doesn't know what it is like to be a normal human being and I don't think he wants to be one. He's a diva and a diva will die.

Diego seems wiser nowadays. But for a coach, well, no, sorry guys. My hope of seeing him as a great coach died in WC2010, not that the hope was so high before...

Just hope Diego can retire happily with his family and enjoy good life. Watch football, be a commentator, something like that.

I also want Diego back in the National team.. but not as coach.. he is too emotional for it. Diego is a GREAT motivator, he should be assistant coach along side a tactician that can keep him in check. So long as Diego is close to our players in the training pitches, on the locker room.. he would be great for us. But he needs to be far away from media conferences and line-up / tactical decisions. In short he needs to be our official mascot ;p

Can I explain my self before you start shooting me ..

Maradona took the risk, and he became the National Team manager, of course I don't want him to be the coach now, and not for a quite good time, but it just hurt me to see him fail like that, and I would really love it to see him as the great he will ever be.

Winning with Argentina the world cup, let us say 2022, would be something amazing to witness !!

@some supporter, you are right about Diego imploding.. but I think more accurate would be 'dont do coke and dont make friends with the Mafia'. There are plenty of other drugs I encourage people to use, like Mate, Coffee.. alcohol and cigarettes are the worst ones of the bunch.. far worst than coke.. hint hint Banega.

Javier Mascherano is a master tactician and has phenomenal game awareness. I can’t wait to see him coaching our future. There is light at the end of the tunnel :o)

I sort of disagree with the idea that good/successful players make bad coaches more often than not. Labruna, Bianchi, Gareca — all excellent in both jobs. Barros Schelotto appears to be in the right path. I don't think it has anything to do with positions either — you don't get more defensive than Bianchi and he was one hell of a #9.
There really are no rules for this. Almeyda a good/decent (great for some) defensive #5, and the most clueless coach I've ever seen.

But in particular, Maradona exploded at 26 and imploded at 27. Don't do drugs people.

Off Topic: Is it possible to short the comments from 1st to latest..?

Currently- the comments of this blog are being shorten from latest to first. If we want to read the first comment first, we need to drag down and start from the below. Comments from the excellent fans are also important and intersting as well as the post. I think- all the guys here, will support my idea and admin would kind enough to consider the proposel.

Agree, most of the great coaches were defenders or defensive midfielders more than forwards.

That's why I think Mascherano will be one hell of a coach .. he is a defensive midfielder ,he has alot of grinta in him, and he played under great coaches like Bielsa, Pekerman, Rafael Benitez, and Guardiola .. I can already see him coaching Benjamen Aguero, Thiago Messi, and Dieguito Fernando Maradona in World Cup 2034 xD

@ Madrigal i said don't mention Germany :P it literally doesn't matter who coaches them, they are a team who plays week in week out with each other. Every coach for Germany has had success for the last 40 years.

love diego the player, absolutely loath diego the wannabe coach. I do agree with most of you great players (eg diego, platini, zico, zoff and van basten to mention a few) tend to be poor or average at best. I believe mourinho said it best "coaching is HUMAN science".

for me i'm 50-50 about great players are often very poor coaches...we see maradona can't manage NT when being coach in WC. but try to see when klinsman manage GERMANY team in world cup 2006..they reached into semis in their home ground...so,its hard to say the good player cant being good coach..

@ Abs i never want that...just like i wouldn't want Batistuta, Caniggia, Redondo, great players don't make great coaches (nobody mention Germany that team is a machine that is always in the quarterfinals regardless of whats happening) the best quote i've ever heard is from Magic Johnson's assistant when he coached the lakers (who failed terribly BTW) His assistant was questioned by Magic on how the players couldn't do what he was asking, great players do not make great coaches. The exception to the rule seems as if Defenders and more defensive minded great players can coach I.E Guardiola.

I do see where you are coming from though, the man did so much for us pretty much single handedly won a world cup against countries going through their golden ages such as England, France, Brazil, and a few others.
