Lamela is a wonderful player. Hes improving day by day. He will be excellent for NT too. Wait and see. Sabella will use 4-2-3-1 in knock out stage. That means Lamela will be a bigger part of NT. If Icardi does well consistently, he will have his chance with NT. I like Icardi style of play, movement is good. How is this ?

@rasel. I agree with you...a 4-2-3-1 is the best defensive and counter attacking formation for Argentina....Romero-...... zabaleta- garay-Fernandez-campagnaro/Rojo/Rodriguez -....... gago(banega)-mascherano-dimaria(Lamela)-Messi- Aguero-............. higuain(lavezzi). Subs in ( )

LAMELA should be continue in squad . he is a good option for replacement or substitute of our fantastic four. icardi also a good choice for substitute. argentina have good option for forward. but they need to manage other defender who will be selected when there will be injury............i think argentina going well under sabella. sabella trying to get a good defense which need to win the knockout stages. in knock out stage attacking football is so risky......so organised counter attack can be winning option....4-2-3-1 is the best formation for argentina....

@Chainsaw, thanks for your reply. But I guess he is a decent player and losing him to Italy is something not great....

Both! Lamela for Walter montillo and icardi for DiSanto.... Lets get Italia off of icardi line and get Lamela to strengthen our weakest position....attacking midfield!

Id prefer Lamela, how often does Higuian get subbed? Not often as opposed to Di Maria...who seems like he's getting subbed just about every game, plus Lamela can sub in for Aguero and we can play a 4-4 -2 with lamella and Di Maria bursting down the wings

@Kenneth: Are you sure? Because from what I remember Maradona was just calling other strikers (Palermo),and Domenech at that time, tried to lure him with France a couple of times only to be rejected nicely by Higuain.
You may be right though.

@ Slicer the thing with Higuian wasn't just us not calling him up it was also him deciding, he too took a while...

Actually, and I may be "raining over water", both can , EASILY, make Sabella's next pitch... First, the both play different positions on the field and they are the perfect substitudes for Di Maria (Lamela) and Higuain (Icardi)... I do not think Sabella has to wait for Icardi to "develop"... Many times in sports is just a question if "streaks"... And Icardi (and Lamela also) is on an excellent one... Calling Icardi now also will ensure his services for Argentina... As a matter of fact, he already (read Ole online)declared his wishes of playing with his National Squad... Both TERRIFIC players and with ENORMOUS potential

Both! as back ups for di María and Higuaín since Argentina gives up goals late when one of the Fantastic 4 comes off the pitch and they adjust their formation.

@ Gilly, Schelotto is still Argentine even if playing for Italia. According to the same wikipedia he has 1 cap for Italia so he's definitely ruled out for the Argentina NT.

I would choose Lamela because he has been playing for the longer time and has been developing for 2 years now.
Icardi has just exploded last month but needs to show it on a consistent basis.

However, If I had the choice, I would personally call up both because we need to lock up Icardi in the NT asap.
I still remember when France were trying to convince Higuain to play for them. We took a long time to call him up and in the end Maradona finally came to his senses and called him up in our most desperate times in 2009.

Guys, has Schelotto decided to play for Italy instead of our beloved Argentina? Coz, on the wiki etc it still shows he is an Argentine ....

Some Argentines who have dual nationality are more cautious in choosing Argentina now, part of the reasons is because of the "Daniel Bilos" factor. He was supposed to choose between Argentina and Croatia back then but chose the first.

As a result, he just played, if I'm not mistaken one official match for Argentina and 2 unofficial matches. Had he chosen played for Croatia, he would have had a lot more caps.

That's why after that, the likes of Pablo Osvaldo, Schelotto, Mati Fernandez, Barrios and some others chose another nationality. They were encouraged by Camoranesi's decision of choosing Italy that resulted in: World champion, key player for Juventus, and more caps for Italy.

It is no secret that Italy are lack of good youngsters, that's why they want to "steal" the non-Italian origin players like Balotelli or Osvaldo or Schelotto. They want to copy Germany. 15 years ago or so Germany had a crisis of the young talents, then they changed the strategy. Now the likes of Ozil, Khedira, Podolski, Klose, Boateng, or Gomez are not Germans, but they are the cores of the team. in 1990, the Germany World Cup winning squad had almost all pure German players.

Sabella's attempt to talk to Icardi personally was a good move. I am sure Icardi does not want to be like Bilos. He wants to make sure that he'll be at least as useful as Higuain if he chooses to play for Argentina.

As for the poll itself, I see them both as important for the future, but since we are looking for Di Maria's back up, so it is better to see this:
1. Lamela or others (Gaitan/Sosa/Pastore/Perez/Salvio)

For Higuain's back up:
2. Icardi or others (Palacio/Di Santo/Scocco/Martinez/Lisandro Lopez/Barcos)

The reason is Lamela and Icardi are highly rated/favorites here. So it is hard to change between them.

Y not both? They both are very good at what they do. They would be perfect subs for Dimaria and Higz. Icardi should be called asap to stop Italy from having him so I voted for him. Lamela is safe and would definitely be in NT. With DiMaria not playing against VEN its a good time to bring in Lamela. He could really pair up with Messi. But I have a question for all the ARG fans who follows domestic league. Who is this Scocco..? I ve seen some of his goals. He is incredibly good especially from distance. Y not get him too?

Lamela, but as Johnny said bring in Icardi asap so Italia doesn't try to steal another Argentine for their NT.

Call up Icardi and get the suspense over with. Get him locked in with Argentina. Lamela's time will come.
