@Mr.D I second Leandro. As a manager one should always think of all the possibilities and have a plan B. Though its highly difficult for Argentina to win WC without messi,Sabella should not/never let Argentina surrender because of this reason.

@MrD. I agree that Messi should be in EVERY line up. However, a) to say Argentina cant win a cup without it him is not true, there is enough talent on the field to be a winner, not saying its likely, but less talented teams have gotten to the finals. Kun, Pipita, Masch, Tevez, Pastore, Lamela, DiMaria, etc, etc are nothing to complain about and would walk in to most National teams.
b) There is still a possibility we could lose Leo, yellow cards, red cards, injuries or resting him if we already won the group. Its not a dumb idea to let his replacement get some minutes with the team, at the very least in competitive scrimmages at practice. Who would take his role? DiMaria? Montillo? Lamela?

Remember, we lost Diego in 1994. A team that was bull dozing past opponents. When he left, the team completely fell apart without a conductor.

Argentina's Plan B (Plan C, Plan D, etc.) involves Messi. A "Plan B" without Messi is absurd. Argentina without Messi doesn't win the WC in 2014.

So I see no point in watching friendlies without Messi playing or subbing him off at half time.

There will be games where the fab4 will not be able to play at once...like against a team like Germany whom will flood midfield with a 4-5-1 formation. A formation that Argentina beat in Germany during a friendly with a 4-4-2 but lost to in the world cup two months later with a 4-3-3....

Sabella has stated he has 70% of his team and is still working on other aspects to find players. He will speak to Lamela(who could be a backup to Di Maria) will also talk to Nico Burdisso, E.Insua is another. He will go see PSG(Lavezzi,Pastore)/Valencia, Banega,Tino Costa. So Sabella is clearly moving building blocks. He also has knows the defense still needs to be addressed.

sabella should call up Caballero and even Barovero from River Plate. Romero is a good keaper but i just dont see any confidence in him. Who knows the competition might help him.

Two things need to work on now which I'm sure Sabella is currently doing:

1. Finding reliable alternatives to compliment the FAB4 incase of injury or substitution.

2. Getting a proper balanced bench whom is capable of keeping the standard of play or increase it whenever given playing time.

I'm sure by 2014 Argentine will be a refined engine gearing on all cylinders ready to prove ourselves as the worlds best on BRAZILIAN SOIL...

Sabella is on the right tract and is working well to get the right mix and balance team....

Sabella will stay in Europe for a few days to attend :

- Sampdoria (Romero ,Icardi ,Maxi Lopez ,Matias Rodriguez) vs Roma (Lamela ,Burdisso)
- Valencia (Banega ,Tino Costa ,Piatti) vs PSG (Pastore ,Lavezzi)
- Real Madrid (Di Maria ,Higuain) vs Man United
- Atletico Madrid (Insúa ,Cata Diaz) vs Rubin Kazan (Ansaldi)

@ Fanfrom78 lol but gago isn't 38, also the key is that Maradona called up a new group every game! Sabella keeps the consistency, if you think about it, the N/t is just a selection of players as really before major tournaments you don't get a lot of coaching in. You can't really compare the two coaches, Sabella slowly played the fab 4 using subs and what not until he felt they were ready, statistically the fab 4 are fine defensively and especially offensively. All the best teams in the world have very offensive minded players.

Sabella is a wise coach, we just need to give him more time and games, to determined our different strategies.FAB4-High octane, FAB3-octane, FAB2-conservative.Its still premature,Sabella has something up his sleeve, that's why his trying out new players.

Sabella finally tested out several players by actually giving them time, in the first half we were playing some of the best football in the world, the moment we lost the ball somebody was their to clean up the positioning was superb, in the 2nd half Sabella made several changes and the team played okay but TBH the momentum left the moment Di Maria left if we play a full 90 with the original 11 our defense is solid

@ Pablo D. TOTALLY AGREE we need to see what argentina can do after we qualify maybe lucas Biglia for Masche? I think Costa should also be given another shot. Icardi, Lamela, Pastore. The Defenders like Fernandez and Garay should play every game if sabella is set on using them they need to gel together as much as they can.

the 1st half was fantastic, a joy to watch.
the defence is still scarey and is time to try cal in goal just to give rom a shake up.
im still concerned at the lack of a playmaker in mid and i dont believe sabella uses the subs well and as we know their is some fantastic players who should be on the bench but not even in the squad.
still no sign of a plan b if messi gets injured or suspneded.
for me a b+ so far overall towards the big picture w.c 2014 victory.

By the way, notice the comparison of the away game between the Saudi Arabia game and the Sweden game. Against Saudi, only three of the quarteto fantastico playing. We were bad, almost suffered an embarassing loss, anti climax. Against Sweden, we won with ease. 3-2 did not show it. We won in EVERYTHING.

3 years ago before the world cup. Messi had only scored 15 goals. Aguero had 9 goals and Higuain had 7 goals only. Di Maria scored 3 goals by the time.

NOW, Messi has 31. Aguero and Higuain have 17. Di Maria has 8 and a bunch of assists. The difference is the chemistry. The more they play together, the better they look.

By 2014, one and half year from now, they will have more goals.

Do you remember how lethal Ronaldo (62 goals for Brazil), Rivaldo (34 goals), Ronaldinho (33 goals), and Denilson (8 goals) were?

@Leandro

I don't understand why you said Di Maria needed to step up in defense. I watched the game again and Di Maria was defending. We definitely played NOT 4-2-4. We were 4-3-3.

I counted, there were three times where Di Maria was inside our penalty box defending. I mean INSIDE. I did not count the corners or FK defending. He was stealing the ball two times and anytime he got the ball, he ran faster than all players to be a major threat for Sweden. Please man, watch again. Tell me just one time, what minute where Di Maria did not defend where he was supposed to. When? Be clear.

I think Sabella's instruction was very clear: As long as you can show me that you can defend, then the fantastic four will start!

Clearly Di Maria was the man of the match. Either he or Higuain. As a "wing playmaker", Di Maria showed that he was needed because Messi's tendency to give killer pass to the wing. It was a joy to behold when Di Maria ran really fast with the ball, then the other of the quarteto fantastico followed.

That... is our major weapon in the world cup next year.

we still need that depth in midfield! if u noticed yesterday we had to rely on messi leaving his possesion,to start the attack from the back! Gago is incapable of doing so. Gago can only pick out a pass! u need a midfielder with pace in the middle or with needle eye passing! such as Riquelme or Aimar or Veron but nowadays i think pastore would do well! And why isnt Lamela being called up?!?!?!?! He is doing so well this year! He needs a chance he has 10 league goals and 2 assists

Gradually headed in the right direction, methinks. Mind boggling the difference between the performances now and much of what we saw with Diego and Batista.

Still areas that need work, but we now know that Sabella is aware of the deficits. Still some of us will have concerns that may not be addressed, or maybe they will. I've never been convinced by Fernandez. Too inexperienced, though maybe with time he'll improve. I like the fullbacks that started, but like many of us, I'd still like to see some auditioning there...which Sabella is doing. And I also would like to see Willy get some time in goal.

Messi as the supreme focal point, axis and fulcrum continues to bother me a little. Lets hope he stays healthy as an ox. He'll have to be come WC time for Argentina to have a shot.

I'm not so afraid of Spain actually. I think we can play deep with 3 DM's and torch them on the counter with Di Maria, Messi, Higuain. Aguero would have to sit. It would be suicidal to try to outplay them in midfield when not one of our midfielders would have a prayer of starting for Spain. They're definitely a class above us in that department but they're definitely not invulnerable against a smart defensive side with killer counters.

More worried about Germany as it's tough to sit back against them since they can beat you on set pieces and plus we have something of a mental block against them by now I'm sure.

We already played Germany under Sabella. Our lineup was almost the same except we had an extra midfielder (Sosa) and our midfield was demolished. They looked much better until they had the man sent off which changed the whole match. Even in the 2nd half with a man less they dominated midfield at times.

That looked like a real friendly friendly match. Happy to see us play like Barca in the first half. However, we must not forget that Sweden allowed us to play so. They were not pressing us at all.
There is an excellent understanding between Gago and Messi, which is very important for us going forward. This was missing when Banega came on. But then, by then we had dropped ourselves.

We played about 15 games now under Sabella, we need another 15 more games in order to keep improving on defense and on offense.I thought we moved the ball well but Sweden did give us time and space to operate and to get into rhythm (Spain is not going to give us time and space).I thought Montillo and Ansaldi played OK, knowing is was their first time being called under Sabella, with Argentina's A team.Overall, we are getting better, great job Sabella!

Sergio Romero - I think he did an ok job. Both goals where hugging the side netting, and I believe the freekick had a slight deflection, he was almost there. Not his best game, but then again he was not tested much and did not need to save our asses.

Pablo Zabaleta - One of his best perfomances, still offensibly he offers very little. And in the air he is just too short. I think Ansaldi could be better as he has more spark in attack.. and if he keeps a cool head (felt like he was trying to hard to prove himself in 20min) his youth and physical size will do us well. Ansnaldi stopped a lot of goal chances by throwing his weight around.

Federico Fernández - He had the hardest job of all, to mark Zlatan. He did ok.. nothing incredible, but no real issues.

Ezequiel Garay - Very clean performance, faster than he looks! Nothing special..

Hugo Campagnaro - I think he is our best wing back. Seldom got beat, good in the air and he did a lot more in attack than any oter options.

Fernando Gago - Man of the Match for me. Incredibly work rate. Cool headed on the ball. Great tackles. Great passing.. including that through ball. He is very complete and always delivers.

Javier Mascherano - Solid as always. Played well as a 3rd center back Barca style and also played well in a more advanced position. A clock.

Ángel Di María - Great offensive threat when he has space to run. Poor when marking (or lack thereof). Guys, dont blind yourself with his offensive flash.. as a MIDFIELDER he needs to deliver on both ends. Regardless how good he is attacking, he needs to step it up in defence. This game was also made for him, wide open spaces to run. Against a more physical team that pressures us in midfield he has a tendency to turn off.. credit where its due. Kid played a great game, but he is not our salvation.

Sergio Agüero - Hats off to Kun. He ran his butt off. And Kun NEVER runs. He hustled, helped in midfield.. you could tell, he was exhausted by the 70th minute.. this to me was one of the most important factors on us winning back possesion. Kun did amazing on both ends.. if DiMaria would match his efforts we would have no problems. Classy goal too.
7
Lionel Messi - Our engine as usual. He looks very comfortable on the pitch.. and right now, is playing better with us than Barca. His heart is in it.

Gonzalo Higuaín - Solid game, great work ethic.

Walter Montillo - Not enough time.. defenitly not a wide player.. he was all over the pitch (in a good way).
6
Éver Banega - Did well for the short time he was there. Not an alternative to Gago (too slow). Not an alternative for DiMaria.. tricky one... He could do Mascheranos role.. or take over Messis spot and stick Messi on the wing or further up.

Fabricio Coloccini.. no comment.

Ezequiel Lavezzi.. short time.. hard working as always.

Cristian Ansaldi.. Looked promising. Needs a whole game.

Zabaleta on the right and Campagnaro on the left is much better than vice versa. Zabaleta looked Manchester-esque today. Hopefully Ansaldi earned himself a spot on the bench. Garay was fantastic. Fernandez got burned by Zlatan a couple of times.

The Montillo for di María sub yielded nothing positive (would've been better to have brought Banega on at that point and see what a Banega-Mascherano-Gago midfield looked like). If we can can just ditch Rojo I'll be happy (well, mostly happy).

Still convinced the Fantastic 4 is the way to go.

@el pipita: Montillo for Di Maria always left us with no width. No problem resting Di Maria since he plays with too much energy to play 90 minute friendlies.
But should have been a double sub with Aguero or Higuain coming off for Lavezzi or I would have liked Ansaldi for Campagnaro giving up license to bomb up for a whole half.

I have to say that despite the imperial finish, kun was off his game today, should've done much better on the other golden chances provided by messi and gago.
Montillo for Di-maria took alot of pace out of the game, but I believe that if given some more playing time montillo could prove to vital for the team in the future, after all the guy has some nice touches on the ball and he's a hard worker in both the offense and defense.
Ansaldi had very little playing time in his natural position but did alright overall, need to see alot more of him.
All in all a fun match with a very flattering result for sweden (should've been 5 or 6 for argentina instead of 3-2) The team in general did great (especially in the first half) and is consistently improving. For the future I would like to see lamela, peruzzi and Caballero get some playing time.
