Its about the style of play for his position. Gago is a rare beast, he is a defensive midfielder that is also good with his feet and poly-functional. He is not the best at anything in particular, but overall his skill set is above par in every category. Defensive midfielders are used like tissue paper for the most part, they are placed on the field to destroy and hand the ball out to the attackers to solve the rest. Gago, while pretty good as a destroyer is not a beast physically.. so he will be put aside by 90% of coaches. His type of player will only shine in a team that plays 'Total' futbol like Barcelona where every player is requiered to be poly-functional. There is also the case of bad luck and locker room politics. The kid moved to Madrid, a club with LUXURY options 3 teams deep and is displaced. This is not his fate alone, Pipita a top 10 forward is regularly benched and marginalized as have hundreds of other top players that are then sold to other clubs and succeed. Madrid is an elite club where only 11 will gain from it, and even that fame is fleeting. He got burned there, not cause he sucked but because the coaches preferred a classic destroyer type and the coaches didnt like him. Had he moved to a team like Valencia from the start he probably would had secured a starting role. His inconsistent playing time also lead to alot of injuries (its tough being a destroyer off the bench every other game) and if you are trying to prove yourself every game you risk it all too often. His move to Roma was also unlucky. He was not bad there, he was ok.. just never found his groove and did not fit the style of the team. His price was also very high since he is an inflated purchase from Madrid. Then Valencia, he seemed to have struck a good deal and found a good coach and then bam, coach is sacked. You could tell Gago was pissed about it. What frustration. I think him moving back to Argentina is a smart move. Not only is it good for Argentine futbol (we need more of our stars here to raise the bar and also solidify our unique style of play), but also it will pretty much guarantee a good chance of starting everygame, without too much worry that next season a player of the caliver of Xavi Alonso will be purchased and crowd him out. Not all teams can afford to have two top players in every spot, Argentine teams especially.Hopefully Gago will find happiness, have consistent performances and win the hearts of the local fans. I see no problem, unless one subscrives to the arrogant view that European based players are ALL better. While there is much more money there, and overall its true, most of those good players came from South America and there are countless other aces that have not crossed the pond for various reasons that still make for great teams. If you look at the games where the best South American teams play the best of Europe.. its pretty even. Slicer (Lebanon) Posted on 2/1/2013 at 5:48 AM 1 Gago is now in the category of Argentine players who had a lot of promise but is deemed not good enough for European Football.Sad to say this, as I remember back in 2007, he was destined to be the Next Redondo with Madrid. Kenneth (United States) Posted on 2/1/2013 at 4:35 AM 0 Personally i feel like we need more players in the N/T that play in Argentina, its a lot more competitive with the media scrutiny and the fact that they don't make the big bucks so they are playing because they really want to play. Jack! (United States) Posted on 2/1/2013 at 4:08 AM 0 Why are people complaining about this? This is great for Argentine futbol, we need more players back home. He will do fine and wont hurt him at all. The love for Argentine futbol is not just based on the NT. Kenneth (United States) Posted on 1/31/2013 at 8:42 PM 0 @ Messi he went on loan to Velez....@Marindrianto i don't think playing in Argentina will stop Sabella from calling up players, hopefully Gago can fine a nice run of form for the 2014 world cup. marindrianto (Indonesia) Posted on 1/31/2013 at 6:16 PM 0 Yup! I heard too Gago is back to Argentina? How is it? Will he stay in Sabela's plan? messi (Lebanon) Posted on 1/31/2013 at 5:23 PM 0 Whats wrong with gago , he went on loan to a team ive really never heard of Kenneth (United States) Posted on 1/31/2013 at 3:56 PM 0 Looks like Buenanote went to Grenada from Malaga...sad talented kid just a few inches to small... Abs (United States) Posted on 1/31/2013 at 2:06 AM 0 I don't get Napoli ?! Why would they loan him out, and then go loan Rolando from Porto ?!Good luck for Fernandez, and once he is sit with Getafe big teams will fight for him !! Dinucci (Argentina) Posted on 1/30/2013 at 7:49 PM 0 I just think if he goes to Athletico hed go to a club that wins more. He will gain moral by winning not losing. vik (United Kingdom) Posted on 1/30/2013 at 2:54 PM 0 i would prefer mascherano to pair up with garay in CB role over this chap! he is good but needs top flight football on a regular basis.i think we have had this conversation before?! haman (Bahrain) Posted on 1/30/2013 at 11:55 AM 0 Really wished if Barca could make a bid for this young fighter, since they're in need to strengthen their defense. But, moving to the Spanish league with a team needs him as a starter is a great advantage that could turn the big clubs eyes into him.All the best Fedi, welcome to La liga. One more topic, did anyone hear about Centurion's move to the Russian club Anzhi? aka Mr. D (Peru) Posted on 1/30/2013 at 11:38 AM 0 Another positive development for the NT. This kid needs action. Even when Cannavaro was out he still didn't play. msi2 (France) Posted on 1/30/2013 at 9:12 AM 0 lol what? Not even close... Alam (India) Posted on 1/30/2013 at 8:38 AM 0 He is our future ayala. Johnny (Thailand) Posted on 1/30/2013 at 4:01 AM 0 Good news for Fernandez and the NT. He'll have a chance to prove himself and get some experience. Leandro (United States) Posted on 1/30/2013 at 1:49 AM 0 As long as he pulls a Gago, delivering his heart out for the national team I am happy. Good players that get a bad hand at club level use the national team as something to prove to the world and to themselves.. its a great motivator.. and its also easier to get their teams to lend them out for friendlies.. Vamos Fernandez! Kenneth (United States) Posted on 1/30/2013 at 12:06 AM 0 He should go to a club where he can play, i don't understand why he never played for Napoli, he always played well for Argentina the coach should've gave him a chance. Anyways he's young and if he can get a solid year and half in as a starter before the world cup, i think we'll be fine defensively. Dinucci (Argentina) Posted on 1/29/2013 at 10:53 PM 0 no he should go to athletico de madrid progress under simeone
