Sergio ROMERO on Copa America, WCQ and more

In an interview with FIFA.com, Sergio ROMERO spoke about the Copa America match against Uruguay, the upcoming World Cup Qualifying matches and more.

About the match at the 2011 Copa America against Uruguay which went to penalty kicks, here's what ROMERO had to say:
"I was really annoyed because I’d studied all their penalty takers. In fact, apart from [Diego] FORLAN and [Andres] SCOTTI, I went the right way for every kick. That stayed with me. It’s in the past now and it was very painful, but this is a World Cup qualifier and it’s something very different."

About being Argentina's number 1 goalkeepers:
"It’s said that goalkeepers only mature once they reach 28, but personally I’m very happy because for both club and country the coaches have put their trust in me. My task is very clear: to give peace of mind to the defence and to keep things tight at the back, because we know we could score at any moment with the giants of the game we’ve got up front."

About the team:
"We’re relaxed because we’ve had some very good results and you can feel that. There’s a sense of calm and confidence as soon as we step on to the pitch."

Concerning the World Cup Qualifying matches:
"Uruguay have a great team. You can see why they had a fantastic World Cup and won the Copa America, but I don’t think the differences are that big between South American sides now. We face Chile afterwards and we’ll have to be very careful. Two matches ago we beat Paraguay convincingly and everyone thought we would easily win in Peru. But just three minutes in we conceded a penalty and the whole stadium was against us."

About which is more difficult, being a father of two girls or facing Uruguay:
"I’m not concerned about the girls’ upbringing because they have a wonderful mother who has managed by herself all this time. It’ll be much harder in goal than raising them. But let there be no doubt, I’m going to do everything possible to make sure we keep a clean sheet, to help us win and continue our path towards qualification. We want all six points, we’re Argentina and we have to show that and win every game."

@ Mik:

Yes, this time is our time, or that's how it should be .. Our youth from 2005 to 2008 (which dominated the world) have finally reached their potential, but the issue is SABELLA isn't picking them !!

I do think their Golden Generation deserve what they have got with 1 WC and 2 Euros. Whichever way they play whatever excuses we can say that either other teams were weak etc etc dont matter they throughly deserve it, that Generations history goes long way back since they were young. We can respect that.

Saying that Spains winning Cycle will have to end at the WC 2014. Nowadays if we take a closer look ours is one team in which players have been playing together when they were young , Messi, Dimaria, Aguero, Garay, Fernandez, Lavezzi, Romero, Zabaleta etc etc most of them have been known each other from young age,

So this time its our turn our Golden Generation we can say it more as "Messi and his Friends" to bring the world down, I know its too early and too premature but these players can do it. With some more nice additions of players our team will look great. Its matter of time Sabella may have to take some harsh decisions to drop some of his favourites and select better players.

i do agree on that as spain won the w.c scoring only 8 goals but at the end of the day they are champions.
spain does the business when they have to but in other games bearly gets out of 1st gear but still rearly loses.

Spain barely beats teams period ( I am not counting the miniscule countries that still have kings in Europe). They won the cup with the fewest goals scored in history.. Spain is a great team.. but they are overhyped. They won the cup in a very boring manner, luck in their favour and with some of the weakest competition ever.. Brasil that cup? Weak.. Argentina? Weak.. Italy? Weak.. only the Germans and the Dutch had teams that resembled their former glory.. and even still I think this current German team/Dutch is weaker than what they had for the past 20 years running. Also, Spains winning core (Xavi, Iniesta, Villa, Puyol) will be on the decline for the next cup. So unless Silva, Fabregas and co step it up they will be weaker. As I see it, they won the cup by never letting go of the ball and relying on brilliance from Villa and Iniesta to score, beyond that they where pretty limited in attack.

With our counter attacking sharpness we can bury them.

Vamos Argentina!

Not very true, Spain has up and down moments, but when it comes to tourney time they hit their strive. I mean, they just barely beat Georgia 1-0.

jack what you are saying is true the best time to hit peak is just on a world cup but spain have proved you can be at your peak at all times.

You can not hit your peak at qualifications, you need to hit it right before the WC and during. You need to get your qualifications set in stone then get ready to rumble. We had something like 4 games in hand when we qualified for 02, what did that get us?

i agree Notoraj for a time teams lost respect for Argentina. I mentioned to someone sabella should have made a statement in the early games. Secure qualification and strike fear!.
Instead we struck doubts...but it could be alot worse!
We could be in the position we were in when Maradona took over.
I disagree with alot of what sabella does..but in terms of the standings can't say i can complain. I just hope argentina grows in a healthy manner and not have a plan b like many teams that impress in qualifiers but do crap in the actual world cup. The dutch...the spanish (before their current winning cycle) etc

Uruguay is the Tuffest opponents for us in the qualifiers in Absence of Brazil So we can expect a tuff match. Home advantage is with us we will have to utilize it.

I don't want to hear anything!! this is the time and chance for a revenge!! Uruguay is not the same team back in 2011 and their Suarez got warning for diving ..now our Gladiators should just banging them hard and win those 3 points. For god sake we will play in Argentina we must beat them!! We should play ferociously so the other teams start to respect us!! Let's beat those bastar*s 3-0!!

Hey by the way i just saw a rumour "Riquelme had offered himself to Sampdoria" through Romero, but they turned him down because of tactical reasons.

Nice Interview, By the way Romero have been now our Number one for quiet a long time now isnt it. As he said, GKs tend to mature around the 30s so its a gud sign for us he is only 25 so he will defently improve. He desrves to be our No 1 ofcourse mistakes happen to even the best of GKs too. But Still Romero have been excellent for us especially under Sabella and For Sampodria too he have been gud. In both cases the defence is not so gud thats an important point. GKing with World Class dfenders ahead is easier job.

One thing noiced about Romero is Most of times he do go for the Correct direction when the penalty is taken But he dont saves it. But last match was an exception. He need to improve on that aspect more but penalty includes some Luck too. cant blame GKs.

GK's play till their late 30's till 40's. Plenty of time for others to make a name for themselves before getting a call up here.

I trust Romero for the NT. His Brazil match was probably the worst I've seen him play but that's only one game. Even Casillas has shitty games.

how about the mistake vs brazil.... ALL 3 goals could of been stopped. i like romero and think he should be starting right now but as a goalie all those shots could have been stopped. they first goal this past weekend was weak on his part.. dont get me started on the huge mistake. he needs to keep doing his thing and improve on his weaknesses.

During the highlights i watched of the game, he played well made some great saves as his team got completely dominated and the one chance they had was from a free kick. Yes he did make a mistake (lack of focus most likely) but when he plays for a team who simply cannot attack the other team is going to score goals.

Speaking to the media, here is what MESSI had to say: "I wish we could win as many titles as we can in Barcelona and qualify for the World Cup with Argentina." Mauro ZARATE's problems with his club Lazio continue. ZARATE's agent has hit out at the club, as he has been left out of the team. "Our position is clear: either we go to the end of the contract and then evaluate a future move, or the president lowers his expectations so we can consider offers from teams that are on a par with or superior to Lazio."
