Argentina: Your Dream Team

With the 2012 summer Olympics about to begin later this month, United States basketball fans have been talking about their "Dream Team".

When associating the words "Dream Team" with basketball, you tend to think Michael JORDAN, Larry BIRD, Charles BARKLEY, Magic JOHNSON and many other legendary names. With the Olympics coming up, some fans are labelling the 2012 United States basketball team as another "Dream Team", claiming that if somehow, someway, both teams were to meet, the 2012 team would defeat the 1992 team. Others, strongly disagree.

While reading on the Dream Team, it got me thinking. What would Argentina's Dream Team of the past decade look like? Who would be in it? I'm not talking about right now, but a team which would consist of players from 2002 to present. I would like to think that out of the current crop of players on the team, Lionel MESSI would surely make a squad of 23 and even make the starting XI. Who would be the coach? Would you go with Marcelo BIELSA, Jose PEKERMAN, Diego MARADONA, Sergio BATISTA or Alejandro SABELLA?

What would be the criteria for getting chosen to be part of the team? Would you only look at that players performance with the National Team and disregard his club form? Someone who has always excelled and raised the bar while playing for Argentina yet not producing that much with his club. Would you leave someone out because that person doesn't fit in the formation you wish to play?

Here's a list of names of players who have appeared at a senior tournament for Argentina since 2002.

Goalkeepers:
Roberto ABBONDANZIERI

I think the real team that matches the greatness of the real "Dream Team" of the US Basketball of 1992 is the Argentina Olympic soccer team of 2004. The team finished the tournament without conceding any goal in 6 games and won with an average margin of 3 goals...something that not even Barca could achieve. That team was undoubtedly the best Olympic soccer team of all time.

They played a "can't touch this" football that was very beautiful to watch. Tevez led the team with 7 or 8 goals in the tournaments. The other 10 gold medalists were: German Lux, Fabricio Collocini, Roberto Ayala, Gabriel Heinze, Juan Sorin, Javier Mascherano, Lucho Gonzales, Andres D'Alessandro, Kily Gonzales, and Cesar Delgado.

They were the dream team.

The Argentine dream team was assembled for the 2006 World Cup. The only missing piece was il Capitano, Javier Zanetti.

@Sandy, the headbutt Ortega did against holland in the World Cup ruled him out for me. Id rather see Aimar at his peak than Ortega.

zanetti, ortega, and messi are the players whom i will definitely include. but i am surprised to see some have excluded ortega! imagine ortega playing with messi while zanetti rushing through the right wing (also sorin through the left wing)!

I think you need 3 GK's.

I thought about having Demi as well, he was pretty good in the middle of the 2000's.

and mano, you'd rather have a old CANIGGIA over a young and prime CRESPO? Interesting choice my friend.

GK Pato

LB-Pupi-CB-Ayala=Samuel-Sorin

MF-Masche- Riquelme-Aimar

Messi-Crespo- Kun

So my 23 is.

Crespo
Bati
Messi
Kun
Saviola
Higuain

MF
Aimar
Riquelme
Veron
Masche
Cholo
Gago
Maxi

Ayala
Samuel
Sorin
Pupi
GMilito(Prior to his injuries)
Zaba
Colo

Pato
Romero
Andujar.

I am just going with a 4-3-3 format, can be different, and have different players with different formations.

Again, their can be a change here and there if formations changed.

That's my 23.

BTW, that list is missing Licha Lopez.

1. I would like this to be expanded to 1994 where there is my man El Principe Redondo, Caniggia, Batigol, Balbo, Ruggeri, Goyco, and el Diego, then we're talking abt the dream team.

2. Wilfredo Caballero isnt a defender. He's a goalie.

My list:
GK: Roberto Abbondanzieri, Sergio Romero, Roberto Bonano

DF: Roberto Ayala, Walter Samuel, Javier Zanetti, Juan Sorin, Gabriel Heinze, Jose Chamot, Nicolas Burdisso.

MF: Javier Mascherano, Esteban Cambiasso, Diego Simeone, Juan Veron, Juan Roman Riquelme, Pablo Aimar, Angel Di Maria, Ariel Ortega.

F: Gabriel Batistuta, Lionel Messi, Gonzalo Higuain, Sergio Aguero, Hernan Crespo

No Caniggia there as Caniggia in 2002 is the almost done version of him.
