This is Lionel MESSI's team

After years of people around the world criticizing Lionel MESSI's performances with Argentina, no one can say anything bad about his performances anymore.

Since Juan RIQUELME's departure from the Argentina National Team, the pressure has been on MESSI to duplicate his Barcelona form for the sky blue and white. However, it hasn't always been just about his form for the Albiceleste, but some people even questioned his commitment and love for Argentina. And I'm not just talking about his love and commitment towards the team, I'm talking about the country itself. Fans, if you can even call them real fans, were ready to crucify Lionel for scoring against Estudiantes in 2009 at the final of the Club World Cup for Barcelona. Imagine that! Imagine people wanting MESSI's head on a platter because he scored for his CLUB against an Argentine team he has no affiliation with at all.

The ridiculousness reached new heights when people started labelling him as a Catalan simply because he doesn't sing the anthem. And for that, I'm going to quote something I read last week. "MESSI sings the anthem with his feet". They forgot that he represented Argentina at U20 level and won the World Cup with that team, how he fought with Barcelona to go to the Olympics in 2008 and how he has never said no to playing for the National Team, unlike some other player who some people proclaim(ed) to be the "the people's player".

Which brings me to my next point. One of the reasons why Lionel has had little to no backing by the Argentinian media in the past is because he has never played for a major club in Argentina. When things go wrong, he doesn't have the backing of Boca Juniors, River Plate or Racing Club fans. He's literally had to earn the respect of the public and the hard way.

Despite everything, there is not a single person alive who can question MESSI's love, commitment or performances for Argentina anymore. Two hattricks in his last three matches for the National Team, including a goal in between against Ecuador has moved Lionel into fourth spot in Argentina's all time top goalscorers list. I've always believed in Lionel and that eventually, he would explode with this team. We began seeing signs of this in 2010 at the World Cup where along with Javier MASCHERANO, he was our best player at that tournament. And it finally seems like MESSI has come into his own for the National Team. The way I see it, since the Copa America, this has been MESSI's team, despite not wearing the armband at the time. When MASCHERANO was shown red against Uruguay at the Copa America, MESSI was the one who took over and wore the "C". Not Javier ZANETTI, Gabriel MILITO, Nicolas BURDISSO or any of the other veterans who were on the pitch at the time. And with that responsibility, he was also the first penalty kick taker against Uruguay.

When SABELLA took over, he confirmed my theory that this is indeed Lionel's team when he named him team captain. Look at the celebrations whenever Argentina scores. He's the focal point. He's practically behind every one of the goals Argentina has scored under SABELLA. He's the person everyone points to once a goal has been scored. For me, personally, what confirmed that this is indeed his team and he fully feels comfortable with everyone (which I don't think has always been the case with him), is that fourth goal against Brazil. When he scored that amazing goal, he ran towards the bench and everyone celebrated together. When was the last time you saw MESSI running towards the bench while playing for Argentina to celebrate a goal he scored?

You can tell he finally feels comfortable. No more of the older players. Nicolas BURDISSO, Martin DEMICHELIS, Javier ZANETTI, Gabriel HEINZE, all of those from the previous generation are all gone. MESSI is now being surrounded by friends he has known for several years and most of which he played with at youth level. AGUERO, DI MARIA, ZABALETA, GARAY, ROMERO, MASCHERANO, GAGO and LAVEZZI are all players with whom MESSI has played alongside with at either youth level or the Olympics. These are his buddies. They play for him and he plays for them. You can also throw HIGUAIN in there as he seems to be close friends with Lionel.

I think that, more than SABELLA's tactics, more than anything, is why we are finally seeing the best of MESSI for Argentina. He's surrounded by friends and he knows he's finally the leader of the team and an amazing leader he has been so far. Dragging Argentina through the pits of hell against Colombia while the team was a goal down. Scoring a hattrick against Switzerland, putting in a 10/10 performance against Ecuador and scorring a hattrick against Brazil.

He is currently Argentina's fourth all time leading goalscorer. FOURTH! Behind only Gabriel BATISTUTA, Hernan CRESPO and Diego MARADONA.

# Name Goals Caps
1 Gabriel BATISTUTA 56 78
2 Hernán CRESPO 35 63
3 Diego MARADONA 34 91
4 Lionel MESSI 26 70

He's also getting recognition from team mates and Diego MARADONA, who has always backed MESSI.

"He's not the leader I was, he doesn't have Brad PITT's face or [Luciana] SALAZAR's behind, but he's Argentinian. Stop giving him crap. He's going to give us a World Cup. If you give him crap one day he's going to stay in Barcelona."

Congratulations to Lionel MESSI as his third goal against Brazil sealed an unheard of, unworldly 82 goal season for the best player in the world.

Someone said that Canteros is benched for Velez .. IS it True ?? I really hope that he is not one match wonder ... Canteros is what we r missing from our midfield if not riquelme.....
COz dat guy is a holding + creative midfielder (< than Messi though) more like Xavi type player...
His importance would come when we are leading, and we would like to eat our time away..... + wid a chance of scoring other one :)

harman i agree with you and have exactly the same thoughts on now vs the 86 team and also like you carry the hope history will repeat its self and messi can do the maradona of 86 as at the moment its our only hope with sabella in charge..
i also agree with you no sabella and we are deluding our selves if we think we are making progress, where?the def is a shambles and the mid is not far behind.
we get over run at with any pace.
the ony good new is we are blessed with messi, hig and kun.

Dr.Magdy geat stats but stats read what you want them to as both maradona and bat played in competiotations (the w.c and copa) and this means teams play a differant game ie like germany.
we believe a "friendly" result is making progress when in reality its just a sparring match and then we get to finals and we know what has happened in the last few.
what im saying you would hve to put up every match and its importance as a win in a friendly means not a lot compeared to the w.c or copa and also the stage of the competion like is it the knock out stage as again a knock out win is orth more then the 1st round etc.

Banega plays like Sosa for the NT. I rather watch him with Valencia. Lamela is not better than DiMaria. While younger than DiMaria and probably better than him at his age. (20) DiMaria has done a lot of growing up at Real Madrid and is aging gracefully from that headless chicken we were used to lmao. I used to hate him so much with Lavezzi. (the other headless chicken). The boys seem to be improving and that's a great sign as they are both speedy.

Great post Roy! Great stats Dr. Magdy. @Argies fanindia you couldnt be more wrong. Pastore and Lamela will Hopefully get used by 2018. Those kids need stay benched til then no room for those youngings on our squad. They need plenty of more developing on their own. Besides, in Sabellas team there's no room for riquelme, aimar, or any playmaker other than Messi or shall we say gago because he can backtrack excellently unlike the names above. Slowly but surely but I know this guy has a plan. While still working on plan A and not having a plan b doesnt mean he's doing a bad or decent job. In fact hes doing a great job . We should have a good idea how Sabella's progress once the world cup is over. Seriously, thats a good measuring stick! Not every 3 games! Any new manager unless Mourinho, Guardiola, mancini, etc would be a disaster to our NT and it would never happen Under AFA .Let's be successful and screw the beauty of our game. Sabella is the best coach we've had for a long time and yes while he moves at a sloth's pace, he is getting things done. Let's give credit where it's due and stop thinking this is Fifa 12 PS3. We all have our mouth watering starting XI however there are many issues with certain Players and lets not forget that this is indeed la pulgas team. He is indeed happy and it truly shows. Slowly but surely we'll get where we need to be. Even if we don't win 2014, there is always 2018. We already have 2 under our belt and it's much more than I can say for the other 100+ countries in the world. Slow and steady I know I will see a 3rd star on my jerseys before I die. Unless you plan on dying in the next 8 years I don't see the big rush. We're just demanding way too much from a recently broken down team with no manager.

I agree with @Leandros Line up More..Flexible...we cant simply put names like pastore,,lamela etc etc..ok forget it..that portion we can leave to Sabella i guess..:P...Tactics and team lineup

And nice post @Dr.Magdy...And i have to agree with @Haman and @Johnny too...

Lets alll wish Messi and his Friends brings Glory and Joy to all the Argentina football fans...in 2014...by whichever way they play..Attractive or Non Attractive..doesnt matter..

But frankly speaking with Players like Messi,Aguero and Higuain and Dimaria in our lineup...ofcourse it will be attractive...their combination itself is attractive to watch...

@ elpipita and ArgiesFansindia.
I am very happy to see your comments on Aguero. I have been arguing this with my friends for a long time. Before the match against Germany in the WC, I said that if Argentina plays with kun in the starting line up, they will win. If Tevez comes in the first eleven, then Argentina will lose. What i said became true. Messi-Aguero are a natural combination. They are like the opposite poles of two magnets. Complimentary. And kun understands and supports Messi well. When he scored a goal from a Messi pass in the Copa America, he pointed towards Messi saying that Messi is the real hero. Also remember another occasion in the WC when Maradona withdrew Tevez in the match against Mexico (after he scored two goals), he showed his disagreement by shaking his heads. He wanted to play full time (and not to give a chance to Aguero)! This is the difference between Aguero and Tevez. No wonder that Messi is scoring goals when he plays with Aguero. Also there is no wonder that Man City won the title when Aguero joined them (replacing Tevez). And they have done it after so many decades, simply because that great goal from Aguero!

If my knowledge is correct, four Argentines got FIFA's best youth player award. They are
1) Maradona
2) Saviola
3) Messi
4) Aguero
Except Saviola, all others proved their greatness for the national team. If Argentina had played with Messi and Aguero in the starting line up, perhaps they would have been the first team to do so in the WC! Now we can hope that this will happen in the next Wc.

We can also hope that this partnership will work in the 2014 WC!

@Dr. Magdy I like your statistics, it clearly shows that the national team is doing better under Sabella, but on the other hand it doesn't reflect his concentration on strengthening the defense!

The only advantage is that Leo is performing under Sabella and he seems happy.

It somehow reminds me of Argentina 86, the squad wasn't the best, but there was Diego Maradona who created his own history. If it's going to work like this with Messi, then let it be.

Still criticizing Sabella and not a fan of him!

For the past decades we played a beautiful game, we dominated possession and had world class footballers, but didn't know how to win unlike some european teams the ones that didn't display football, but knew how to win.

Reality says, you wanna look beautiful or become successful?

Our NT results under the last three coaches (excluding matches played with the domestic team):

- Sabella in 9 matches: 7 wins , 1 draw , 1 lose
- Batista in 12 matches: 6 wins , 5 draws (including Uruguay) , 1 lose
- Maradona in 20 matches: 13 wins , 7 loses (no draws !!!)

Attack:

- Sabella: we scored 22 goals in 9 matches (2.4 goal per game)
- Batista: we scored 18 goals in 12 matches (1.5 goal per game)
- Maradona: we scored 35 goals in 20 matches (1.75 goal per game)

Defence:

- Sabella: we conceded 9 goals in 9 matches (1 goal per game)
- Batista: we conceded 6 goals in 12 matches (0.5 goal per game)
- Maradona: we conceded 27 goals in 20 matches (1.35 goal per game)

Messi's performance under each coach:

- Sabella: Messi scored 9 goals in 9 matshes.
- Batista: Messi scored 4 goals in 11 matches.
- Maradona: Messi scored 3 goals in 16 matches.

______

My Conclusion:

Offensively Sabella is much better than Batista and Maradona ,But Defensively he comes behind Batista (taking into consideration that Sabella is trying a new back line)

Messi showed his best under Sabella , with 9 goals in 9 games and scoring his first hattrick with the NT (against Switzerland) , Messi also became the first Argentinean to score a hattrick against Brazil since Jose Sanfilippo in 1959.

I hereby state that I now support the inclusion of Di Maria in the starting eleven. He has improved his play and I think has earned his way on the pitch from the beginning.

If, however, he reverts to constant diving and whining, I withhold the right to again refer to him as an intolerable diving weasel.

@ArgiesFanIndia - with all respect, I have some disagreements:

"4-2-3-1: Romero; Zabaleta, Garay/Coloccini, Mascherano, Rojo/Matias Rodriguez; Banega, Gago; Di Maria, Messi, Kun; Higuan. "

Romero; Ok.
Zabaleta; We can do better.
Garay/Coloccini; Coloccini is better than Garay, but Fernandez is much better than both of them.. and young.
Mascherano: Ok at centerback, however he is not a natural there.. so he needs atleast one experienced defender to tell him when to push up and when to contain.. his positioning can be unorthodox, that takes time to develop as a centerback. If we are playing Fernandez (we should, he deserves it from his perfomances) and we are playing Mascherano at CB we need a veternan next to them. I vote for Campagnero, especially as he is Fernandez club team mate and is experienced as a center back and right back for Napoli.
Rojo: Meh, could be better. Matias, very attaking minded, would need a solid midfielder upfront to balance him.
Banega: A drunk, inconsistent, out of form, slow, with a serious broken foot. He is out for atleast 6 months in my book. I really like him when hot, but he is not national team material.. yet. Fingers crossed. Biglia is a better option, faster, stronger, smarter, decent long range passing.
The rest I agree, DiMaria I would use as a wonder sub, keep him in check. Id rather have Lamela play in his position, kid has more brains.

From the line up you gave, I think this would be stronger:
4-2-3-1:
Romero;
CAMPAGNERO, MASCHERANO, FERNANDEZ, PILLUD/CLEMENTE;
Biglia, Gago; X
Messi, Kun;
Higuan.

The X could change based on tactics,
Attack use: (Lamela/Pastore/DiMaria)
Conservative: Someone like Jonas Guiterrez or Canteros or Matias.
Defense: Banega or Guinazu
Attack: Should always be the 'Tridente'. Which is not really 3 attackers as Messi will drop deep as a playmaker if we need him. I agree with @elPipita, Kun gives Messi a perfect outlet and passing partner, while Higuain gives us a solid target man.

@elpipita - Absolutely correct.
The inclusion of Kun in the starting XI has just changed Lionel Messi. Kun is a real Class, a winner probably best argentine player after Messi. Kun made Messi’s life easier in all the last 3 matches. Even against Brazil, Argentina was trailing by 3-2 but KUN came helped to change the result.

But unfortunately Kun is the last choice in the upfront among Messi, Papita, Kun and Di maria. Actually I really want all of them to play in the starting XI with Banega, Gago in the Midfield. Mascherano can play in the defense along with Garay.

I really want to see a starting XI playing against one of the toughest team in Europe (Germany or Spain)

4-2-3-1: Romero; Zabaleta, Garay/Coloccini, Mascherano, Rojo/Matias Rodriguez; Banega, Gago; Di Maria, Messi, Kun; Higuan.

Pastore can be replaced by Kun or Higuan if they want to increase man in the middle later on.

Many may disagree with me, but I truely believe that the inclusion of aguero into the first team (instead of unjustly being a constant supersub) has really lifted messi's and the team's performance. Lio is the heart, soul and brain of the team but kun has added that little spark that ignited the fire.

Messi will easily go to 2nd place if he keeps his performance, but no 1 is quite high. Batigol.....

I'm very happy coz Messi is now comfortable with the team. Maybe it's true, now there is no older generation, all are his friends.

What a match that was against Brazil! What a goal to decide this thriller! What a player! Another 53 years record by MESSI D GENIUS

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ww7TENIsWE0&feature=youtu.be

We won against our fierce rival and celebrated the moment. Now it’s the moment to discuss about the reality.

• Are we going in the right direction? No way.
• Aren’t we are getting too much dependent on Messi? Offcours.
• Do we have any plan ‘B’? Not at all.
• What will happen to this team if Messi has an off day for Argentina? 4-0 thrashing just like WC2010 against Germany.
• Do this team is capable of doing nothing good at highest level? I am in doubt.

No doubt Messi is the best in the world but lots of improvement required in back and in the midfield. . How can a team win without any defense and Midfield? Remember..

• We won against an inexperienced, Olympic gold medal aspiring team (averaging just over 21).
• We were out played by Brazil most part of the game (only 42% ball position).
• Brazil easily could have awarded 1 or 2 penalties.
• All the defenders were caught out of position several times. Even Garay was pathetic.
• Neymar, Hulk just created Havoc in Argentina area.
• No marking..Lots of open space are provided.
• Romero played a great game or else Brazil could have scored 3 or 4 goals. But his mistake leads to 3rd Brazil goal.
• Fullbacks were not capable of moving forward..no pace at all, pathetic in the air.

Only bright part was we won and Messi & Gago.

We must agree that Argentina was defensively horrible and a pathetic midfield. At international football you have to slowly build teams and to do so you need have right players.

I must say Sabella has clay or something very bad for a brain or else how come this lousy coach starts Sosa? Players like Sosa, Maxi, Clemente or Guinazu doesn't even deserve to be called. Argentina must play attacking game with 4-2-3-1 formation regularly along with a defensive Plan B. Messi, Kun, Di maria and Higuan must be there in the starting XI.

Argies need to utilize their best players (Jonus, Ansaldi, Pastore, Lamela, coloccini, Costa, Gaitan, Otamondi) in Europe who will still be at their peak in two years time. Fernandes and Garay are too similar. We must play quicker defenders (may be Mascherano) alongside one of them and hope Banega makes a decent recovery soon.

I am a diehard Argentina fan, but unfortunately I was disappointed for most part of the game yesterday. I have to say this team will be hammered by any top European teams as there is something called defending and tactics in football. We are lacking in both these areas.

We need to play more games to find the right formation and combination.

VAMOS VAMOS ARGENTINA!!!
