Magical attack leads the way for Argentina

Argentina scored three goals in the first half and added a fourth in the second to defeat Ecuador 4-0!

In what was a packed Monumental stadium, Argentina took the pitch knowing that they only have 1 match to play in the qualifiers this time around while every other team has two. A win was necessary. The match started off with Argentina applying the pressure, but Ecuador seemed to have weathered the storm for the first 15 minutes.

The 20th minute came, MESSI received the ball, played a pass to Angel DI MARIA who chipped it over the Ecuadorian's and AGUERO was on the ball and his shot went in. 1-0 Argentina! Onto the 30th minute where Lionel MESSI grabs the ball and goes on a run with two Ecuadorian players trying to bring him down. He slips the ball to HIGUAIN who scores to make it 2-0! Two minutes later, MESSI leads a lightning quick counter attack as he runs towards goal. He passes it to HIGUAIN who makes a one touch pass back to MESSI and the captain blasts it into the net! 3-0 Argentina!

The second half starts a bit more even as Ecuador started creating some chances. SABELLA made the first change, taking out Sergio AGUERO for Jose SOSA. MESSI went on a magical run where his shot was blocked by the defender. SOSA picked up the ball, did a diagonal pass to DI MARIA as he slotted it in to make it 4-0!

Ezequiel LAVEZZI came on for Gonzalo HIGUAIN while Maxi RODRIGUEZ was brought in to replace Angel DI MARIA.

As for actual analysis, ZABALETA was troubled throughout the match as was Clemente RODRIGUEZ. Federico FERNANDEZ picked up a yellow in the first half but in general I thought was pretty solid. GARAY wasn't too bad either.

Fernando GAGO was everywhere and one of the best players out there. Fighting and winning every ball. MASCHERANO had some problems, but wasn't as bad as he has been in the past.

It's maybe true that this game could have been played under Maradona. This 4-3-3 with DiMaria in midfield looked very much like what Maradona did in the world cup. The thing is that what Maradona did was kinda right in the first 4 games, but wrong against Germany. We have such a force in our attack that I see no problem in playing with lots of attackers against small and mediocre teams. So Sabella did right against Equador, who are a good team but not great. I think it is wrong to judge now what Sabella will do against a strong team based on this game against Equador. Against some of the top 8 teams in the world I am 100% sure Sabella will not be playing with 3 attackers and Di Maria in a 3 men midfield. This is where Sabella differs from our last 3 coaches, he is a tactician. Unleashing all your attacking talents and putting the oponents under pressure in a home game against mediocre oponents is also a proper tactic. Let's wait and see what he does in the future against top teams. If he is as romantic, stupid and naiv as Maradona when he faces strong teams, the I am 100% ready to kill him.

This is where some of us disagree. Some want perfection all the time, a well balanced team playing possesion with slow build up play and 8-9 players defending everytime we lose the ball. That is not wrong, it is right. But in my world it is worthless to play Equador or Switzerland and then try to act or behave like it's Brazil or Germany you are playing. It's not possible. When you play Norway you play Norway and try to beat them in the best possible way in that specific game. The same with Equador, Belgium and others you play exactly like you should when you meet smaller teams. Against top teams it's a completely different story. Every game aquires a spesific game plan. Again, I have a feeling Sabella knows this, in contrast to our last 3 coaches.

The positive signs I saw in this game were:
1 Messi, he is getting more and more like the Barca Messi.
2 Gago was a monster
3 The attackers worked really well together in the first half, great off the ball movement
4 Garay and Fernadez looked quite solid, apart form some small mistakes.

The negaitves:
Our wingbacks, Zaba and Clemente were shaky for 90 minutes and our defending as a team were still quite shaky for some parts of the game. Nothing new here, but then agains we played Equador. In a game against a stronger team our defenders will get more help from midfield, and maybe things will look better. But then again it's only a maybe.....

Sosa wasn't there so our midfield wasn't flat so our midfield was able to serve our attack well so our attack was able to do their thing and so we destroyed Ecuador :)

Gago for me was good on the day. He intercept well and his passes were very lovely and indeed he is the one who really assist and do the dirty work to offload Messi and co. Really teams of up well with the front men. Mascherano is more of a destroyer type of player which makes him and Gago a lovely pair of defenisve pair. Our fullbacks need to get their head together and stop overlaping too much and work on their positioning and reading of the game.. If we sort that out we're pretty good

I was just kidding Redondo is now 42 yrs old.
But saying nothing wrong with our midfield !!! I think you're a little bit unrealistic here.

@el principe ,true
yesterday I was watching Real Madrid Veterans vs Manchester United Veterans , this guy combined Mascherano's defensive strength and Gago's elegant passes ,he was simply the "perfect" midfielder.

If only Banega can lose some weight and become more disciplined , we will have our second version of Redondo.

every single thing messi done last night started with gago i hope people will review the game and try thinking and watching he also started the dimaria assist move for kuns goal WAKEY WAKEY GUYS

gago played to dimaria perfectly to start the move for the kun goal

gago started play and was involved in the higuain goal

gagos perfect pass started messis run for the higuain assist messi goal and that pass anything but perfect wouldnt have allowed the run of messi

he worked hard he covered ground and he passed almost perfectly and as for second half sabella clearly instructed to shut up shop thats what they did and sosa was clearly instructed to shut up shop and reduce pace of game both he and gago did this as did maxi wen on

i wish people would grow up and realize these things

Campagnaro Monzon should be in the team. Campagnaro for Right back when Zabaleta messing his self and Monzon definitive for Clemente enough of him

A positive win today and great from out front men. The concerns is not the 4 attacking players it is the 6 defensive players. Positioning is terrible by our fullbacks. Our centre backs are pretty solid and should gel more as time goes by. Zabaleta should not venture too much up top and someone needs to tell him that because he's no use going forward and is out of position tactically when going back. Clemente HELL TO THE NO we have way too many better options for left back and Monzon should atleast be on the bench even though should start over Clemente. Nothing about clement was convincing and correct his positioning terrible, defensive work not up to par, distribution atrocious. Gago and Mascherano needs more games together. Mascherano seems to do better in CB but lets see.

Substitution by Sabella was horrible for me. How can Clemente not be the first to be sub in this match he was the worst. A tactical solution would be to switch Sabaleta to left back. Di Maria and Messi should play full 90 minutes as much as possible.

We need to sharpen up on our defensive work to midfield too much bad passes and lack of concentration in defense and midfield. We have to learn to be focus for a FULL 90 minutes whether leading, drawing or loosing. It was obvious in second half...

Our midfield was horrible in the 2nd half,I dnt think that Mashcherano can any longer posses the quality of a midfielder..because he has been frequently used in the CB role for past 2 years..Gago was brilliant in the 1st half..but unless u r Redondo,u cant control the midfield lonely..what was the most dissapointing and alarming fact that Zabaleta acted like a free way gate that the Ecuadorian Rt winger passed him in such a manner as if he was not there..Poor,I think Campagnaro is better at rt.back as I dnt knw the quality of Matias as a defender..btw,as less as u talk about clemente, better!!Does not deserve the famous Sky-blue jersey..I bet I will see either Insua/Monzon in the next selection of Sabella..

Every time argentina plays i'm stuck in front of the message shout box from mundo and i wacht the process of the game. I was going to do the same yesterday but for the first time one channel on television was broadcasting the game between bolivia and chile and they were saying that they would broadcast the game between argentina and ecuador too. The game was starting at 1:30 am here in greece. I was so excited that i would watch the match live but when the game between bolivia and chile finished the broadcaster said that he was informed that the game between argentina and ecuador was postponed and the channel did not broadcast the match. Iwas very frustated and then i was stuck in front of mundo's message shoutbox again and thanks to your messages guys i was so excited for our victory!
Congratulations to our argentina and to sabella!

Vamos, vamos Argentina,

Let's not make a big fuss about brazil please. They are a side who are also in the works. Bad copa America like us. Let's not forget we beat them last game with a cruddy team. 1-0 I think was the score. Ecuador is a decent team. It's because we have great forwards the reason why we demolished them. 2-0 argentina vs brazil. June 9th

I think Mash should play in CB.His passing was quite woeful today.Gago was quite good.Specially in the 1st half as he had a hand in all of the 3 1st half goals.I fancy Lucas Biglia to play in CM role and partner gago.he passes well and can keep the ball.
Finaly the Fantastic 4 of Argentina rocks. Messi,Kun,DiMaria and Higuain --- Take a bow!!!!!!!!Hope they continue....
Vamos Vamos Argentina!!!!!

Hi guys,
I'm welcoming that victory and I'm waiting for the next match agains Brasil to make a better appreciation of our team.
I would like to see Matias R in action as a RB and still believe that F Monzon can do better than C Rodriguez and Rojo (who play too slow) as a LB.
I'm a Coloccini defender but I'm so happy to see how the pair Garay-Fernandez did well yesterday and I hope the best for them.
I wish that the team will improve game after game and I know that Argentina will be GOOD !!!! Vamos ARGENTINA !

@Leandro: Exactly, Campagnaro shouldn't have any problems playing either on the left or right side of Argentina's defense since he plays on the right side of Napoli's 3-man defense.

Zabaleta as midfield? I'm not saying I disagree with you, but his connection with Messi is quiet poor. His crosses are not that good, even when playing for Manchester City. Him doing better in midfield is beyond me.. Chances of him playing in midfield for Argentina is zero. Yet, I would like to see how he'll do as a defensive midfielder.

I think we should swap out Clemente for Campagnero, we would be stronger in the air and on defense. Zabaleta is a better midfielder than a RB.. we should use him instead of Sosa and use the new upand comming RB playing in chile (forget his name).. Since Campagnero is more defensive, it would give room for a more attacking right back.. like D. Alves..

Our thoughts toward Mascherano playing as a midfielder for Argentina have been justified. Mascherano has lost his midfielder shapes, although he was never so good in midfield. Clemente and Zabaleta should be dropped from the national team. Argentina need a better fullback to take over Zabaleta's role. In this case, Sabella should give Insua, Monzon, Ansaldi a call. Not only Zabaleta was beaten easily, he also lacks pace to catch up to the opposition. As for Mascherano, he should be playing as a center back or should be dropped from starting 11. Sabella should introduce Cambiasso to take over Mascherano's role since he's better offensively than Mascherano.

Sabella should give Colochini a call. Gaitan, Lamela, and Pastore should also be called to give our counter-attack more tastes. Sabella should try either one of these for his back four.

Insua-Garay-Fernandez-Campagnaro
Insua-Mascherano-Fernandez-Campagnaro
Insua-Mascherano-Colochini-Campagnaro
Insua-Fernandez-Colochini-Campagnaro

I agree with @elprincipe may be Sabella would try that Moving zabaleta to left and play Matias on Right...he has done that before too..But Rojo is there too...Lets see..and Garay and fernandez i really wish they carry on this gud form against Brazil..so that Sabella keeps faith in them...And they both can form a Combination too which is very importnant for Defenders...Defend in Pairs...And I always liked to see the MESSI ,DIMARIA,AGUERO,HIGUAIN combo...bcoz they all seems to be in same wave lenght...and has a great understanding between them...But the pblm is ..the line up is tooo offencive ...Midfiled is almost dry...But a nice tuff match is coming for us...to find the answers ..it comes in gud time for us...Sabella gonna be tested ...

To everybody wanting changes this is the first time we have done what we are supposed to do against bad teams-destroy them. It wasn't so long ago we had ties with these crappy teams--for reference see copa america.
Last time against brazil with the real nt we beat them 1-0. We will see this time.
That said, Clemente sucks and I would take rojo over him any day of the week and i think they played with each other at estudiantes so they know each other.everybody else is fine unless they play themselves out of the lineup this means you Mascherano.

The good news is we have discovered 2 great discoveries: The defense duo in Federico and Garay. And the magical quartet of Di Maria, Messi, Aguero, and Higuain. In case we want to go offensive, we can always use this formation and pretty much the same players.

However, the bad is the full backs are still not discovered yet. Pablo Zabaleta had just won a crown for City, but is never... I mean NEVER looked good for Argentina. When Argentina won the Olympic with Batista, Zabaleta was just average. We keep criticizing Rojo here, but Zabaleta isn't that much better. I am one of the few who strongly disagrees with the fact that Zabaleta has no competitor for our #4. I mean he's not THAT good! He's not Messi or Mascherano (2 of our must start players) or something. Against Ecuador, Zabaleta's defense looked bad. If it were CR-7 who was head to head with him, he would definitely have scored. Then when he played a short corner with Messi ala Alves, it was horrible.... it was just plain awful.

Clemente always played good for Argentina before this game. Against Ecuador, Clemente looked old and slow. He seemed to have lost his speed. So if we say he and Rojo both are bad, what would we do now? Move Zabaleta to the left and start Matias?

As for our tactic, I was the one saying that we have transformed into a counter attack team. Well check out our goals. 3 of our first goals were all counter attacks. Only the last goal was scored when the opponents surrounded the area with their players. The fact that we could not totally dominate Ecuador also showed that we're not a ball possession team like Barca or Spain.

As for our second most hated players of Mundo Albiceleste, Angel Di Maria, I tell you the player has a very high instinct of assist. No wonder why his assist/game was the highest in La Liga. His touch to Aguero (1st goal) and Higuain (almost a goal) showed his assist instinct. He also looked excellent with Messi.

Aguero and Higuain were both excellent and looked dangerous. We should keep playing all four of them when facing weak teams.

Last but not least, Lionel Messi. I believe this is the game where he had the most shoot on goals in his career with Argentina, which is good. Next is Brazil, let's not get carried away. Federico and Garay will finally be tested against them. Are they really good?

Hi!

I have been reading your blog for years (even old version) and now finally decided to make my own account to talk things in my point of view.

First of all, I didn't saw the match entirely, only full higlight (15 minutes), but I heard, that bad midfield passing was our problem. I am no suprised, because look at the truth: Mascherano is playing CB in Barcelona and even there his passing isn't so great; Gago is very unstable and not good in Roma. Ok, there is no point to demolish our quite young CB pair now and Mascherano as a midfield sweeper is not bad idea, but net to him, we need player, who has magic touch and is stable with passing as well (Pastore, Banega). We can't forget, that the oponent was Equador - this game show's nothing.

The most positive side, what I saw based on higlights is, that Messi seems so happy for playing for Albiceleste. It seems, that he enjoys it more than playing for Barcelona. Our attackers are great and wingers are brilliant - I think its tme to play like Holland. One creativ midfileder n center (like I said before) and WC final against Brazil - HERE WE COME!

Welcome back Seba.. bring on Brazil and bring on young and fast full backs to take care of Nymar and his fellas.

I somehow like the form up front of DiMaria, Messi and Lavezzi. We have the option to use this if we need more pace and rely on counter attacks.

No need for Maxi Rodrigues, no need for Clemente who made a lot of Mistakes and distributed wrong passes.

Fedi Fernandes was the benefit of the match in my humble opinion!
He looked solid and fighting with spirit and specially good in the air. I see world class defender for Argentina in the near future.

Sosa is just like Sabella, decent and doesn't take risk at all, he is following the instructions. I see Sosa as the opposite of DiMaria.

Of course I still want to see Pastore and Lamela with the selection, but after giving them a midfield role!

As for now Vamos Argentina Vamos a Ganar

Watching this game made me so happy. When your 3 forwards and your attacking winger all score goals, then you are doing well.
I am worried about the Brazil game. But I'm excited to see how well we can do.
Which team is more of a work-in-progress, Argentina or Brazil right now?

Hola amigos! Remember me? ;)

I've been so incredibly busy lately and it'll get worse in the next few months.

I even missed the match tonight, but in this case it was because I had 2 birthday parties to go to and I just couldn't skip any of them.

Instead, I came home at around 2 AM and found a re-run of the match so I watched the 1st half. Going from one birthday party to the other, I did manage to listen to the 2nd half on the radio. So now I have a pretty good idea of what happened at the Monumental.

This is something I have always thought about our current state of affairs, but I'll try to put it into a short sentence:

Sort out the defence and midfield, conceded 1 goal per match (or even less, if you want to make things ideal) and watch your world class forwards make the difference.

This is something we have been consistently failing to do under the previous three Argentina managers.

This is, in my opinion, what SABELLA can do, and hopefully he'll manage to achieve just that.

MESSI is the best in the world but it has been proven many times that you don't win football matches on your own. He never had a solid structure behind when playing for Argentina. Hopefully, he'll start getting that and he'll keep showing the form he has been showing recently for Argentina.

Bring on BRAZIL!

Good game for the albiceleste and I agree with all of u that the team is still a work in progress. Our attcking trio were all in fine form, messi in particular was on fire!
The midfield was decent, I mean di-maria did quite well, setting up plays and getting in on the goal action when able; gago was fantastic as usual, hard working, talented and most importantly consistent, which is alot more than I can say for another talented cent midfielder called banega, who in-turn has the talent to be world class if he gets his act together. As for Masch, well he had some good moments, but I think he would work alot better as a sweeper in a counterattacking 3-5-2 formation, as his time with barca has not done his midfielding form any favors.
As for the defence, well the centrebacks were in good form, Im really glad garay left real madrid, because he's finally playing to his potential. Fernandez surprised me with his form considering he hardly plays for napoli, and I can see how lethal he can be from set pieces, he came very close today and lets not forget the 2 goals he scored on bayren munich in the CL.The full backs leave much to be desired I really want to see ansaldi, pillud and M.Rodriguez given a chance.
Romero was fantastic as usual, very underrated keeper IMO.

My match preview :
.Now i will explain in player wise...............
GK S.ROMERO(rating-7.0):he had nothing to do in first half.but in second half he saves two shots.
CB F.FARNANDEZ(rating-7.5):he done a really good job.he had some excellent block.definitely the best defender on the the night.
CB E.GARAY(rating-7.5): he also done a good job. one great heading stop.
RB P.ZABALETA(rating-6.0):not a great game.he is good in defense but very poor in offense. he gave some foul also.
LB C.RODRIGUEZ(rating-5.5):flop player in the field foe albiceleste. he was not going in forward.often give ball in defense.very poor game.
DM J.MASHCHERANO(rating-6.5):average game for him.but often stop flow of attack of Ecuador.
CM F.GAGO(rating-6.5): not a great game.
CAM DI MARIA(rating-8.0):great game. 1 assist and 1 goal.very good chip to aguero then another chip to higuain but he could not finish it.then a very good volley to score 4-0.
CAM L.MESSI(rating-8.5):must be man of the match.excellent game 1assist and 1 goal.he often test opposition goal keeper.leading in the front.
CF S.AGUERO(rating-7.5):good finish at start.then excellent team up with leo and papita.
CF G.HIGUAIN(rating-7.5):another great game.good finish and good assist to leo.good game.
SUB:
CM J.SOSA(rating-6.5):good game coming from sub.good assist to di maria.
CF E.LAVEZZI(rating-6.0):let sub but he test opposition defender.

So In this match defense was average, midfield was below average but attack was excellent.now against Brazil matias should come for clemente and zabaleta should play as left back.

In the end the main out come of this match is...our attackers r sooooo much talented...as all knows....thats why with out that much midfielders...still we scored 4 its great to see these 4 together....and lets see how we gona fair against our arch rivals Brazil...i think we will get further clear picture of our players quality...defenders and midfield will surely be tested more against Brazil....as i before said our current set can be devastating against teams like Equador ....but against Brazil...hmmm....we can wait for now 7 more daysss lets give them a chance....by the way i would have liked to see matiaz roderiguez get some chance to play to see how he does...but didnt happen ;((

If we continue to improve from every game, in every aspects then we are going to be ready for the WC. Still a working progress, so far so good.

When all your strikers score, efficiency is considered high. It worked well and our stars shined. Waiting for a stronger opponents to be tested!

romero - best of a bad bunch

garay/fernandez - very very promising - young, tall and powerful in the air at both ends.

zabaleta - fine. deserves to start.

clemente - awful - haven't seen matias, monzon or ansaldi play... give them a shot though. LB is up for grabs.

masch, gago - enjoy these 2 in the centre, i would much rather see banega in for gago in the long term though...

di maria, messi - wonderful, concrete starters.

aguero, higuain - best attack at international level by a mile.

the team is taking shape well. very promising.

Wow a great comment in goal.com which expresses very well our MASSIVE problem:

Argentina their collective game isn't better then a 15th placed team in any major competition. They won't ever get somewhere on a WC if they don't have a strong collective defensive approach that involves all 11 players. Defending with 9 men at best isn't good enough anymore (over a decade at least now) and if you don't learn it against these smaller teams then you are wasting time. Plus Argentina are another team that didn't learn how to attack and tactically secure the play at the same time. You don't let any playmaker dictate a game before the whole freakin team has learnt how to move into effective tactical positions, act and reacts to movement and let the ball do the work. All you get when you first don't learn to combine as a team is a lot of ballwatching and delayed reaction to action.

Argentina needs a couple of different gameplans anyway 'cause they aren't collective among the best in anything, they need to be able to adapt to the opposition. You can't win when you fail to admit there are teams out that are better at your own primary gameplan.

That was a gorgeous third goal. That touch pass back to Messi by Higuain, followed by the Messi strong touch was sublime.
