VALDANO: "Difficult to define Argentina's identity"

Jorge VALDANO, who scored in the final of the 1986 World Cup for Argentina and worked for Real Madrid as general director, spoke about MESSI, the National Team and more.

On Lionel MESSI:
"MESSI continues to be a genius, he leaves us some sort of sign in every match that he's the best".

On the National Team:
"The National Team is sending the wrong signals. They have excellent forwards but in other parts of the team, they don't have enough choices. Since that's where Argentina has to find the solutions to become a strong team and not just an attractive one. We need to regain the love of the ball. Today, it's very difficult to define Argentina's identity".

On BIELSA's Bilbao:
"In Bilbao (BIELSA's club team), something is happening and I'm sorry that Argentine's don't see it. There is a team flag on every balcony. I'm proud of what BIELSA has made and continues to make. Hopefully he'll win one of the two championships that he is fighting for (Europa League and Copa del Rey)".

I think i can make a better team. My team will be ..................
(GK) S.ROMERO
(CB)MASHCHERANO (CB)CAMPAGNARO
(RB)P.ZABALETA (LB)ANSALDI
(DM)E.BANEGA
(CM)A.DI MARIA (CM)J.PASTORE
(SS)L.MESSI(C)
(SS)E.LAVEJJI (CF)S.AGUERO
My team other member will be.................
M.ANDUJAR, J.CARRIZO, F.COLOCCINI, F.FARNANDEZ, E.GARAY, E.INSUA, F.GAGO, N.GAITAN, R.ALVAREZ, G.HIGUAIN, E.LAMELA, T.COSTA.
This team not only for recent matches, but also for 2014 world cup. And i am sure this team have enough fire power to win everything. I also think that sabella should understand what modern team want. if you want to beat European team you have to made a good defensive side. In my team i have a experience defence. I hope Mr. sabella read my article and hope to make same lineup. God bless albiceleste.

My understanding:
Forwards: execellent, but the best partnership is yet to be discovered.
Midfield: decent (don't compare with Spain), but who should start? Argentina needs a playermaker so that Messi doesn't drop back to do all tasks. Frankly I dun think Messi is a world class playmaker at least currently.
Defenders: average. I wonder why no coach gave Monzón a chance. He was the Dani Alves on the left flank in 2008 Olympic. Hope that Garay can develop as a first class defender.
GK: okay.

His comments are spot on. Before any runs through assorted lineups, bottom line is that all these assorted lineups are stretches. Clubs keep producing forwards because thats what European teams pay top dollar for generally. Our midfielders are average, our defense is below average, our goal keeper is ok, but a far cry from what we have had in the past. As far as coaching, that is mediocre at best also. You have a guy that doesn't have a real clear vision, relies far too heavily on Estudiantes players, and isn't daring enough to go through some lumps with the sorts of Lamela, Pastore, etc until we have consistency, hence we are stuck looking at the great Jose Sosa (SoSo). Sad, sad state of affairs.
