Is Lionel Messi really the best player of all time?

Is Lionel MESSI really the best player of all time? The comparison is between him, PELE, and MARADONA.

How about others? Are they really worse than Lionel MESSI?

I want to compare Lionel MESSI with three other legends who are surely among the top ten player of all time: Zinedine ZIDANE, RONALDO Luis De Lima, ROMARIO

Here is my formula:

Team:

World Cup x 10

European Cup x 5

Copa America Cup x 5

Champions Cup x 5

Confederations cup x 3

League Winner x 3

League Winner (minor) x 2

World Club Cup x 2

League Cup x 1

UEFA Super Cup x 1

UEFA/Winners cup x 1

 Individual:

Ballon d’Or x 3

World Cup Best Player x 2

European Golden shoe x 2

UEFA Best Player x 2

League Best Player x 2

World Cup Top Scorer x 2

UEFA Champions League Top Scorer x 2

League Top Scorer x 1

Fair enough? OK here we go:

1.       Zinedine ZIDANE:

World cup: 1 x 10 = 10

European Cup: 1 x 5 = 5

Champions Cup:  1 x 5 = 5

League Winner: 3 x 3 = 9

World Club Cup: 2 x 2 = 4

UEFA Super Cup 2 x 1 = 2

Individual:

Ballon d’Or : 3 x 3 = 9

World Cup Best Player: 1 x 2 = 2

UEFA Best Player : 1 x 2 = 2

League Best Player: 2 x 2 = 4

Total:  35 + 17 = 52

2.       RONALDO Luis De Lima

World cup: 2 x 10 = 20

Copa America:  2 x 5 = 10

Confederations Cup:  1 x 3 = 3

League Winner:  1 x 3 = 3

League Winner (minor):  2 x 2 = 4

World Club Cup:  1 x 2 = 2

League Cup:  4 x 1 = 4

UEFA/Winners Cup:  2 x 1 = 2

Individual:

Ballon d’Or: 3 x 3 = 9

World Cup Best Player: 1 x 2 = 2

European Golden Shoe:  1 x 2 = 2

UEFA Best Player: 1 x 2 = 2

League Best Player 2 x 2 = 4

World Cup Top Scorer: 1 x 2 = 2

League Top Scorer: 3 x 1 = 3

Total: 48 + 24 = 72

3.       ROMARIO

World Cup: 1 x 10 = 10

Copa America: 2 x 5 = 10

Confederations Cup: 1 x 3 = 3

League Winner: 1 x 3 = 3

League Winner (minor):  8 x 2 = 16

League Cup: 5 x 1 = 5

Individual:

Ballon d’Or (FIFA Player of the Year): 1 x 3 = 3

World Cup Best Player: 1 x 2 = 2

UEFA Champions League Top Scorer: 2 x 2 = 4

League Top Scorer: 8 x 1 = 8

Total: 47 + 17 = 64

4.       Lionel MESSI

Champions Cup:  3 x 5 = 15

League Winner: 5 x 3 = 15

World Club Cup: 2 x 2 = 4

League Cup: 1 x 1 = 1

UEFA Super Cup: 2 x 1 = 2

Individual:

Ballon d’Or: 3 x 3 = 9

European Golden Shoe: 1 x 2 = 2

UEFA Best Player 1 x 2 = 2

League Best Player 3 x 2 = 6

UEFA Champions League Top Scorer: 3 x 2 = 6

League Top Scorer: 1 x 1 = 1

Total: 37 + 26 = 63

Statistically, RONALDO is better than the rest. ROMARIO who claims himself as the “second best player of all time” after PELE is just one point ahead of Lionel MESSI.

If Wayne ROONEY, Rudi VOLLER, Gary LINEKER, and Michael OWEN all say that Lionel MESSI is the best player of all time. It does make sense since Lionel MESSI is just 24 years old. His number or achievements at 24 years of age is comparable that of the legends of football.

The scarry part is that it is not even half of Lionel MESSI career yet.

So if Messi scores 6 more goals this season (Messi has 35 now), he'll break another record of the most goal scored in a la liga season.

If Messi has at least another hattrick, he'll break the record of most hattrick numbers in a la liga season.

He's also on his way breaking some CL records.

A GREAT ARTICLE:

Will he or won't he become the greatest footballer ever?

Lionel Messi's latest record-breaking feat on Tuesday when he became Barcelona's all-time top scorer in official matches has strengthened his case to be recognised as the best player in the history of the game.

While the jury is still debating on whether he really deserves to be hailed as the greatest of all time, as some of his colleagues at Barca have labelled him, there is no doubting that Messi is, by quite a country-mile, the best of his generation. And he has made breaking records his part-time hobby in recent weeks.

He became only the third player to win the Ballon d'Or three times; he is now the record goalscorer in Champions League knockout games with 24 goals; he became the first player to score five goals in a single game in the Champions League era; he is the youngest player to reach 150 La Liga goals, and of course, Tuesday's landmark that looks set to cement his legendary status at Barca, becoming the club's all-time top marksman. All these in the first three months of 2012.

But despite his prolificacy with records and goals, there are still countless major milestones that he has yet to shatter, milestones that, many would argue, the 24-year-old has to reach before he can be considered the greatest footballer ever.

Below we list some of the all-time records Messi is yet to conquer.

BARCELONA & LA LIGA
ALL-TIME RECORD MESSI'S TOTAL
Barca all-time appearance record:
Xavi 616---------------------------314

Barca all-time top scorer in La Liga:
Cesar Rodriguez 192-----------------153

Barca all-time top scorer (including friendlies): Paulino Alcantara 369---------------245

Most goals scored in one season for Barca (including unofficial matches):
Clemente Gracia 59------------------56

Most goals scored in a single game for Barca:
Joan Gamper 9----------------------5

Most Liga titles won for Barca: Xavi, Pep Guardiola, Josep Samitier 6--------------------5

La Liga all-time appearance record:
Andoni Zubizarreta 622--------------204

Most La Liga titles won:
Francisco Gento 12------------------5

All-time La Liga top scorer:
Telmo Zarra 252---------------------153

Most goals in a single Liga season:
Cristiano Ronaldo 40----------------34

Most goals scored in a single Liga game:
Laszlo Kubala, Bata 7--------------4

Most hat-tricks in a single Liga season:
Cristiano Ronaldo 6----------------6

Two more records could tumble in the coming weeks. Messi is now just four goals away from becoming Barca's top scorer (including unofficial matches) in a single season, and can beat Clemente Gracia's previous haul of 59. Leo currently has 54 competitive strikes and two in pre-season in the 2011-12 campaign. The Argentine is also one hat-trick away from eclipsing Cristiano Ronaldo's record of six trebles in a single league term, set in 2010-11. He is now just seven La Liga strikes away from smashing the Real Madrid star's total of 40 goals in a single league season.

Looking further ahead, Messi can join Pep Guardiola and Josep Samitier with six La Liga titles if the Blaugrana succeed in retaining their crown this year. It won't be a record as Xavi will move to seven wins.

BARCELONA & CHAMPIONS LEAGUE/EUROPE
ALL-TIME RECORD MESSI'S TOTAL
Most Champions League trophies for Barca: Andres Iniesta, Carles Puyol, Xavi, Victor Valdes
3--------------------------------------3

Most Champions League appearances:
Raul 144------------------------------64

Most European Cup/Champions League trophies: Francisco Gento 6----------------------3

All-time top scorer in Champions League:
Raul 71-------------------------------49

All-time top scorer in European competition:
Raul 73-------------------------------50

Most top-scorer awards in Champions League:
Gerd Muller 4---------------------------3

Most goals in a single CL season:
Ruud van Nistelrooy 12------------------12

Most goals in a single European Cup season:
Jose Altafini 14------------------------12

Most scoring final appearances in European Cup/Champions League:
Alfredo Di Stefano 5-------------------2

Most goals in European Cup/Champions League finals: Alfredo Di Stefano, Ferenc Puskas
7---------------------------------------2

Most hat-tricks in the Champions League: Filippo Inzaghi, Mario Gomez, Michael Owen
3---------------------------------------3

Several milestones are in Messi's sights this season. Despite a tricky quarter-final showdown against AC Milan in the quarter-finals, Messi needs only one more strike to become the player with the most goals in a single Champions League season, and three more to beat the all-time record (including the European Cup) of 14. The Argentine is also on course to collect another top scorer award, which will tie him with Gerd Muller, while he requires just one more hat-trick to hold the sole record for the most trebles in the Champions League.

Messi continues to home in on Raul's legendary mark of 71 goals in Europe's premier club competition. He is only 22 strikes behind, and at the rate he is going, he could comfortably smash that record within the next two campaigns.

ARGENTINA & INTERNATIONALS
ALL-TIME RECORD MESSI'S TOTAL
All-time appearance record for Argentina:
Javier Zanetti 145--------------------67
All-time top scorer for Argentina:
Gabriel Batistuta 56--------------------22

All-time appearance record in World Cup finals: Lothar Matthaus 25----------------------8

All-time World Cup top scorer:
Ronaldo 15------------------------------1

Most World Cup wins:
Pele 3--------------------------------0

Most goals in a single World Cup tournament:
Just Fontaine 13-----------------------1

Most World Cup tournaments:
Antonio Carbajal, Lothar Matthaus
5----------------------------------------2

All-time Copa America top scorer:
Norberto Mendez, Zizinho 17--------------2

Most Ballon d'Or wins:
Johan Cruyff, Michel Platini, Marco van Basten
3----------------------------------------3

A lack of success on the international stage has always been Messi's Achilles Heel, and it's one of the main reasons why his fiercest critics, including Pele, have so far refused to recognise him as one of the greatest players of all time. On paper, he looks unlikely to equal or break any of the significant landmarks such as Ronaldo's status as the all-time World Cup top scorer, or beating Just Fontaine for most goals scored in a single finals tournament.

However, overtaking Gabriel Batistuta as his country's leading marksman is a distinct possibility, as he requires 35 more goals with the best part of a decade of international football ahead of him. As for individual honours, Messi could go into the history books in 10 months' time if he becomes the first footballer to claim four Ballon d'Or crowns. With the way things are going so far in 2012, you wouldn't bet against him.

There is one record to end all records, the Holy Grail of landmarks that, if Messi is to achieve, could go some way to closing all arguments about whether or not he is the greatest ever: Pele's 1281-goal haul for club and country.

With only 256 official goals so far, Leo is still over 1000 strikes away from Pele's legendary mark. That's a long way to go and Barca will have to dig up the archives of Messi's goals in the junior teams, and he may have to keep a log of the number of times he will score when playing against his grandchildren in the backyard if he is to reach that tally!

Messi is not the Best ever yet...The Best Ever there was is ofcoure DIEGO MARADONA After that comes Messi...Others i dont care or needs to be cared because they r or were not as Unhuman as these 2 little Genius r...But the thing is what Maradona have acheived in his full carrier is almost been touched by Messi at 24...The only thing left is WC that he will win surely...And i think on the basis of Ability and Talent Messi is the best ever he does things which r unhuman...Maradona also was like this...It would be a race between Maradona and Messi for sure in between this two one is the Bestest player in the Planet...We r Lucky both r Argentines..

Nice attempt, but trophies are won by teams. We cannot say that the fastest runner will win the relay if his teammates are not fast enough. In term of individual recognition, Messi is above everyone with 26 points.

In comparing with Maradona, I believe Messi is better at least if you comparing them at the same age. At 24yo, Maradona had not achieved this much. Messi, on the other hand, has already considered as the best.

Not bad at all in your approach, however being someone who enjoys analysing data.

Their are major variables that have a very distinct outcome in how we view this. The fact is hard facts and statistics are essential in these sort of assessments, but the most complex variable is that of *opinion*.

The individual preference of each person who watches football varies so much it is extremely if not almost impossible to every justify who is the best ever. Even with statistical date the human preference is the major undoing of all that logic. One person may hate Messi simply because he is Argentine or hates Ronaldo because he plays for real madrid. The list goes on and on. At the end of the day one thing is clear throughout the history of football..opinions on who is the best have always been heavily influenced by emotion and human preference rather than hard logic.
This is why we love the game.....
It's why all of us are here....we all have emotional attachment to this beautiful team.
So that's why believe the best player in the world will always be an issue and it will never ever truly end.

Nice way of quantifying these qualitative arguments people throw against each of these top players.

One opinion is that when you are assigning a value of 10 for world cup winner, the world cup top scorrer and best player in world cup deserves higher rating than 2.

For me,messi is too young to be compared with others in this list. May b we can see at 24 how much did they all achieve in terms of footballing success.

Nice post and a great attempt!!!

when comparing Messi and Maradona you have to set aside technical comparisons. just ask yourself two questions:
1- would have Messi - or any other player - lead argentina to 1986 glory instead of Maradona?
2- would have Messi - or any other player - lead Napoli to Seria A (during its peak) and Europe champions?

the answer to both these questions is no. which is the only argument required to know that Diego is still the best ever.

As much I love Messi, it is hard to see him surpass Diego unless he wins a World Cup. I know people say(The Euro sentric) that the CL is more difficult of a trophy and etc, but you can build teams. Having 20+ fellow countrymen and winning the World Cup is something that is unreal. Messi gives us a 3rd star then I will put on as the greatest ever.

We have luxury arguments with these two players (Maradona / Messi).

Beyond stats, for me in order for Messi to equal Maradona he must a) Improve on free kicks.. he is getting there. b) Not disappear as much as he tends to do (he is getting better) by dropping deep into mid and making things happen like Maradona used to (or Xavi).. he certainly can, but he is used to the Barca system which is unrealistic at any other team. c) He needs to be a better leader.. not quite Captain material yet.. although he is a much better role-model.
d) He needs to prove he can bring a weaker team to victory like Maradona did in the 90 WC and through Napoli. Winning the World Cup with Argentina would about do it, Barca gives him too much of an advantage for comparison. Perhaps if he spends the last years of his career playing for a smaller Argentine club and gets them to win the Libertadores, etc it would compare.
e) He needs to prove he can play well in rough conditions. Diego played at a time where tackles where crunching and in the toughest defensive league (Italy of the 90s), Messi plays in modern football which is faster and more intense.. but tackles are mostly civil and Spain is the most protective of its players from the top leagues. This is partly why Messi has a hard time scoring in S.American tournaments as he gets pushed around ALOT more than in europe.

On personal taste, I feel Maradona was a little more unpredictable and funner to watch.. since he was slower he had to be trickier, which I like.

Cant wait to see him play again in the Arg. Bra game.
