Argentina vs Brazil - Head to Head Statistics

The first time Argentina and Brazil played was on September 20th, 1914 in Buenos Aires. Argentina won that game 3-0, initiating a rivalry that would go on to grow after every encounter.

There is no doubt that today the Argentina-Brazil rivalry is the fiercest of all international rivalries, and when the two teams take the field, it is never a friendly (no matter what the occasion). Both teams battle to the end, literally, as we saw in Doha last night.

Since the first game in 1914, Argentina have enjoyed being the dominant side in the head-to-head stats. At one point, Argentina reached a 13 game lead in 1970 when they defeated Brazil 2-0 in Porto Alegre. However, the 70's would prove to be a dark decade for Argentina against their neighbors. Brazil would go on to win 8 of the next 13 games (all the rest were draws), cutting the lead to 5, until Argentina finally recorded their next victory in the 1983 Copa America in Buenos Aires.

From then on, the stats stayed somewhat balanced until the turn of the century, where Brazil would again gain ground. The past decade saw Brazil dominate with 8 victories in the last 11 matches (compared to Argentina's two), thus eliminating the gap Argentina enjoyed in the head-to-head stats, drawing level on 33 wins each in Rosario under the Maradona-coach era.

For the Brazilians, Doha was an opportunity to finally take the lead for the first time ever. However it was not meant to be. Messi's goal in the 92nd minute last night gave the Albiceleste their 34th victory over the Selecao, thus restoring Argentina's supremacy over Brazil.

Argentina and Brazil have met only 4 times in the World Cup, of which Brazil won twice ('74 and '82), Argentina won once ('90) and they tied once ('78). In World Cup qualifications, surprisingly the first time they met was in 2000 (Brazil won 3-1). To date, they have played 6 qualifiers: Brazil won 3, Argentina won 2 and one draw in between.

As for the Copa America (formerly known as the South American Championship until the 70's), they met a total of 32 times: Argentina won 15 (plus 1 on penalties), Brazil won 9 (plus 2 on penalties) and 8 Draws in between. Note: In their statistics, FIFA count penalty shoot-outs as draws.

The rest of the matches came in various events such as international friendlies, the old Roca Cups, Pamerican Cups, Mundialito ('81), Gold Cup ('88 in Australia) and others. However FIFA usually consider them all as international friendlies. So altogether, they make up 47 games: Argentina won 16, Brazil won 18, and 13 draws in between.

So all in all: 90 games, 34 wins for Argentina, 33 wins for Brazil and 23 draws. Argentina have scored a total of 144 goals, 7 more than Brazil's 137.

Iam surprized of what you said and your incorrect statistics!!!...let me tell you the fact which everybody know it including argentina federation and fans , the fact is that Brasil won more my friend..i know you will feel sad now ,but this is the truth..i ve been searching in this subject for almost 3 years, going thru liable and unbiased sources of informations and statistics, all of them said clearly that Brasil won more . from first match in 1914 till last match in 28th sept.2011,the two teams met each other 98 times,Brasil won 39,Argentina won 35,draw in 24.Brasil scored 152 goals,Argentina 150.These offcourse considering penalties matches as Draw, because if we consider it as win and loose ,Brasil number will exceed 39 wins to reach 42!!and Argentina will be 36 wins only!!!..so please my friend, don't be upset, but, what to say? truth can not be hidden!!
Thanks

the biggest difference between higuain and lavessi was seen during 2 half. it was lavessi's pass that led to the goalmessi played 1 on 1 with lavessi, imagine if it was higuain he will not pass the ball to messi. thats for sure

Rey, i know, i heard the same in a few sources (that Brazil were still ahead by one game). However i did my research using both Wikipedia and FIFA.com (you cant get more official than that). Argentina are ahead by one game.

Check it out:

I'm a die hard fans of Argentina, but I have to admit Brazil is better with 5 World Cup titles. Since 1993 Argentina have no senior international title, but Brazil got so many titles: 4 Copa America (97,99,2004, 2007), 2 World Cups (94, 2002), 2 Confederations Cup (2005, 2009)
