With Claudio TAPIA confirming that the Argentina National Team would be playing two friendly matches against Italy and Spain in March, rumors have already surfaced about who might receive a call-up.

I have read some good reaction to Lanzini from English pundits over the years & I know WestHam are having a bad season, but for me, Lanzini never looked like a player who could boss Argentine midfield. IMO he is an average to good category player who might have a peak season ahead.we r overhyping him a bit. Banega on the otherhand is a player with great quality, but Banega only plays for a 15-20minute spell.then he completely disappears.Banega has helped us with nothing over the years & someone new should get a chance this time. Everybody is destined to have their own Opinions, Like Cr7 Said he is the best player, We cant take opinions seriously. I know, But XAVI is a Master of Midfield, He wont praise anyone vaguely i guess. Out of all Argentine Midfielders he only said Banegas name,May be everybody have certain preferences, But fact is Banega One of the 10 Best Passers In Europe as per statistics. Even then that alone don’t make him a great player for our NT, He is rather inconsistent while playing for us, But would have loved to see him play well for us.
According to me Banega is the best Midfielder we have right now,But its just my opinion only. Had he replicated his club form for our NT, we would have way less Headache in the Midfield position.As i said above because of his inconsistency have lost the trust in him. And about Lanzini, I cant say anything regarding him until he plays for our NT, Its not easy to play along side Messi, Is there time for new midfielder to be inserted, I don’t know. We will get a better idea after March friendlies till then there is hope for all, Because Sampa is monitoring nearly 60 Players as he said. So everybody has chance.

Who will be the Jordi Alba or Dany Alves for our NT in WC, Thats gonna be the key for Messi’s Success. DI MARIA and ACUNA are almost locked to do the Role of Alba, And i think PAVON and SALVIO are the ones who are locked the Role of Alves(Which he used to do with Messi). The Wingers are going to be so important for us in the WC.

On the right, I agree with you, should be pretty safe for Salvio and Pavon.
However, on the left, very tough. 2 places for Di Maria, Acuna, Papu Gomez and Perotti. Very closed their level. Papu has been exceptional for a couple of years in Calcio. Maybe the best in term of dribbling and pace. Perotti is essential in his club, very creative player. Acuna did great job in the last few games of qualification and he has the highest workrates comparing to the other 3. Di Maria is the most experienced, his long passing and his corner kick is the best.
Realistically speaking DI MARIA will be there at the WC if there is no injuries for him, Whatever Form he is in dosen’t matter because he is DI MARIA, All the Coaches sees something in him with all his inconsistency too.
ACUNA started playing as a Left Back so thats an added advantage because Sampa most probably will play 3-4-3. DIMARIA & ACUNA at left will offer Defensive stability both covers so much ground too. Either one of them has to play the role of Alba.
PEROTTI well is added to the setup way too lately he should have already played so many matches for us, A player who can play in both wings & comfortable in both Feet would have been way useful always.
GOMEZ i think is a Character like LAVEZZI was, He will be selected most probably because every team needs one Funny Character too, Very good player too. Also he can play as a Second striker & as an Attacking Midfielder too i guess..
I agree that in any case, Di Maria and Acuna should be the 1st choice.
After Sampaoli may eventually choose an additional left winger and sacrifice one of the midfielders because he may need to switch from 3-3-3-1 to 3-4-2-1 or the other way during the game. This gives him more option.
To me, if the team plays in 3-4-2-1, then the 2 wingers got to do defensive work as well, the pair Acuna-Salvio seems to be the most obvious solution. Both of them can defend, dribble and score.
If Sampaoli choose to switch to 3-3-3-1, the 2 wingers can have more freedom and play in a more advanced position. Then I may go for Papu Gomez/Di Maria and Pavon, they are more creative players.
I think 3-3-3-1 is a better formation but in that case we may need an important Midfield player who should be creative too apart from ENZO & BIGLIA, That 1 player i think Sampa still haven’t found yet, Banega? Lo Celso? Paredes? Lanzini? Really don’t know who will be gud for us.
If its 3-4-3 then its rather sure ACUNA-BIGLIA-ENZO-SALVIO but the wingers has to do the Defending & do the creative work because apart from Messi & Di maria there is no other creative player when its 3-4-3

I like it. Bustos, Lanzini and Battaglia are must as for me.
Quite smart, you put an additional defensive player like Bustos to keep the midfield balanced. There are almost 8 players in the midfield which allows to defend high and ensure the ball possession style. I said 8 because Otamendi always stays high when the team attacking, Messi and Aguero usually drop deeper and play as playmaker from time to time. Your 4-1-4-1 looks good and it is actually quite balanced. But it’s hard to get the best of Messi with that because Messi is not a winger anymore for long time and he needs an attacking fullback or winger playing next to him in order to cover him so that he can have the freedom to cut inside. Mercado is more a RCB.
Without many changes, to keep your 4-1-4-1, I will use Messi as false 9 instead of Icardi and use either Pavon or Salvio on the right. On the left, I like Perotti but I prefer Papu Gomez.
somebody have doubt about lanzini… here but i dont considder where he plays.. in psg you can have 85 to 95 % pass sucees rate… in lower team like west ham… it is very dificult to have high percentage pass rate… he has 85%.. and he never loose easily like banega( he have great ball control some time loose the ball in danger area… xavi never loose ball in dificult area.. lo celso and lanzini can help defensively… compare to pastore and banega… and they are young … i hope we can have both of them in the midfield… like silva debrune for city.. we can have lo celso and lanzini

I don’t think many people here doubt about Lanzini’s qualities. The problem is not really him because his selection really depends on which system that Sampaoli will finally use. It’s quite hard to have both of them in the starting XI:
– in 3-4-2-1: most likely Sampaoli will use a defensive midfielder + Enzo Perez in front of the defense and then Messi + 1 attacking midifielder like Lanzini or Di Maria. But we saw that during the last 3 qualification matches that they struggled with that. That’s why Sampaoli tried 3-3-3-1 in the last 2 friendlies.
– in 3-3-3-1: Sampaoli can go for either 1 DM + 1 box to box + 1 holding or 2 box to box and 1 holding in front of the defense. Lo Celso can be 1 of them, but behind the forward, there will Messi + 2 wingers. The only way to get Lanzini inside this system is to use Messi as false 9 and Lanzini will then play his usual role. But in this case you sacrifice Aguero or Icardi.
I understand the fans frustrations on Lanzini because he’s been doing really great in PL and it’s a waste not to use him.

The one you should have doubts about is Lo Celso not Lanzini. Celso is undoubtedly talented but he’s still way too raw as evidenced by his Argentina matches, so he needs to prove himself in paris and get regular playing time and maybe by the time the WC rolls around he’ll be ready.
But I don’t have doubts regarding lo celso he is playing superbly recently for psg and in Nigeria friendly he was good in 1st half but lanzini playing for west ham and for quite some time and no big teams interested in him makes me think plus west ham mayb rarely make creative chances that’s also worrying if he can’t inspire west ham to decent position in premier league how he can change our midfield problems and make Argentina midfield compete with midfield of Croatia midfield Spain Germany Brazil etc?? Celso played well in the last PSG games but remember that Celso is playing with one of the strongest teams in europe against lowly ligue 1 teams while Lanzini is playing with a lower team against often better opponents, the comparison isn’t fair.
And how do you know that big teams aren’t interested, Liverpool is apparently showing alot of interest.
For me atleast Lo celso is still raw and he’s already gotten a couple of chances while Lanzini is yet to get a real chance by Sampaoli (singapoure doesn’t really count) even though lanzini should be ahead of Celso is the pecking order.

@mamoun … agree with you Lanzini is better than Lo Celso as he is playing in EPL one of the strong and challenging League in football and good news is he is consistent performer for last 2 or 3 seasons [The famous goal against Tottenham], Even Liverpool thought him as a replacement of Coutinho. Lo Celso is good but not much experienced in tough situation. I would prefer Lanzini over Lo Celso .. Celso is future he also knows that… like so many other talented players
No one player can change a midfield, what is required for a midfield to function is for all the pieces to fit together.
Lanzini is just one of the pieces, he’s very versatile and he can play midfield but he’s best when he’s up the field in the 10 role IMO.

I’m totally serious a 4-1-4-1 formation is a quite tricky but with a skilled, disciplined, energetic squad it could work wonderfully and no matter what, anything is better than a 3 man backline that has an over the hill mascherano anchoring it, which is sadly what sampaoli is doing right now.
If merely playing in the CL was a guarantee for WC success then Spain would’ve made it to the WC final in 2014 easily instead of embarrassingly being knocked out of the group stage. Also look at Argentina in 2014, how many of them were in the CL knockout stages? 5 to be exact (messi, kun, maria, masch and zaba) with Kun and maria getting injured BECAUSE OF being overworked with league and CL duties.

See this the problem with today’s football fans, alot of em don’t even bother to watch actual games, they simply pass judgement on a player based on whether said player plays regularly in a big team.
I put Cartabia there because he is ideal for the 4-1-4-1 system that I suggested. If you follow the guy you’d know that he’s skilled going forward and is diligent in defense. Is is a world beater? I don’t think so but he is the right player for the above system.
Same goes for Nacho, not a world beater but the right player for a system that requires the player to play attacking and central midfield simultaneously.
Regarding Acuna, you say he’s not NT material, really? where the heck were u in the venezuela game when he created the equalizer out of nothing? where were you in the peru game when he was one of the most creative players on the field? where were you when he played a very effective full back against Ecuador? or is just because he’s not playing for Real or Barca or Bayren then he should be discarded?
In your list I see you have Biglia, who hasn’t had a genuinely good match for the NT since the WC 4 years ago. You have Banega who hasn’t had a consistent run of good games since copa cent in 2016. You have Celso who was average at best in the friendlies and isn’t even a starter for his own club. You have Lautaro Martinez who hasn’t even had a good full season in Argentina for god’s sake and don’t even get me started on Pastore who is by now almost as injury prone as Gago.
I will say this again, give a player a chance before you pass judgement on them regardless of what team they play on, otherwise you end up like kidulthood who says the primera is s**t even though he probably wouldn’t be able to tell whether san lorenzo is an argentine club or a brazilian one.
Battaglia is best No.5 we have. Actually someone more than just No.5 as he is able to play as energetic box-to-box. That will be big blunder from Sampaoli if he won’t take him for WC. Nacho IMO should be in NT but I start to doubt he will do anymore. Sampaoli is inconsistent – as he didn’t called him up again after good game against Hong-Kong. Nacho has fantastic instinct to attack, always play forward, as like just few others.
Mamoun, I just prefer Bustos on RB over any other of our players on the position.
@Gonzalo yeah Bustos is good but Mammana offers something that few other players do as he can play CB and RB, he has experience playing in Russia and he’s fast and he fits the 3 man backline that Sampaoli is obsessed with.
I am quite a big fan of both. But I think Lo Celso will have a better chance than Lanzini because:
– Lanzini is a playmaker like Pastore, so if Argentina plays in 3-3-3-1 then it means that there is no such a role for them. In the central of 3, Sampaoli prefers to use a deep-lying playmaker like Banega or Lo Celso instead of a playmaker because there are only 3 guys behind and he need his midfielders to stay deeper in order to keep the ball and protect the defense, a better balance.
– I can only see Lanzini as Messi’s backup, but he will be in competition with Dybala and Pastore. No doubt on Lanzini’s talent, he’s been doing great this season but unlike the other 2 guys, he does not have any experience at high level like champions league yet.
– In this holding midfielder role, I can see Banega, Paredes and Lo Celso as the top 3. If Lo Celso stays in the starting XI of PSG, then I think it’ll be him and Banega in the national team. He is already ahead of Draxler and Pastore in the hierarchy of his club.
True that comparing to Germany, Spain, Croatia, France and Brazil, our midfielders may seem a bit below, but don’t forget that we have a bunch of talented wingers, lead by Messi in the middle, we play almost with 6 players in the midfield, if Sampaoli finds the right dynamic, I think we can compete with those teams in this zone.
@canadien I like your comment … but want to add some point … Lanzini is in better position now compare to Pastore and Argentina need a playmaker like Lanzini …who can be Provider to Messi[ Dybala might be use as false 9]… I know Lanzini is not tested yet completely but he knows how to forward pass and how to score goal as well ….this season already he is having more than 5 assist. and for current update if you saw today’s match you can understand he can score as well … A complete player in my opinion.

Thanks mate, yes we both agree that Lanzini is a playmaker and me 2 I am quite a big fan of him since he joined West Ham. But as I said, in a 3-3-3-1, in his position, you have already Messi and Dybala. Unless Sampaoli switch to 3-4-2-1, so that the wingers got to play deeper and then yes, we can expect either him or Di Maria playing with Messi behind the forward.
In this moment, we don’t know yet which system Sampaoli will use. Maybe we will use both depending on which team they play against.
In the World Cup, it is nearly impossible to expect our team to win all games. In today’s game, a very strong team like Netherlands in 2014 had to face PK shootout situation against a lowly Costa Rica.

Unless there is an injury or something, Romero’s will be there playing all minutes in the World Cup. He has a pretty good record actually. However, he has lost 3 PK shootout in a tournament (All in Copa America) and just won 1 in the World Cup. Is he worth the trust?

Not only for me, he is a bad goalie, he is a bad PK goalie too.
For me I would rather take Rulli as our third goalie. It is at least good for Rulli’s experience wise.

For me (in order): Messi, Dybala, Perotti, Enzo Perez, Paredes.
This is quite likely because Dybala or/and Perotti (if called) should be subs by the World Cup. As is Paredes.
Lautaro Martinez in NT is a good move.He dribbles well,shoots well,assists well loves possession of ball.

Sampaoli have many option with the strikers Pavon,Martinez , Correa and Icardi beside the veterans Kun and Higuain. Pick up the one who can score a lot for N/T. However we have to appreciate to Sampaoli for his trial and effort to bring the best one.
