Edgardo BAUZA: “We had to calm DYBALA down”

Edgardo BAUZA commented on the team’s victory against Uruguay.

With one match and a win now under his belt, Edgardo BAUZA commented on the match against Uruguay. He spoke about DYBALA’s red card, Lionel MESSI’s injury and more. Here’s what he had to say:

“With 11 players, we were dominating the game with the ball possession and were making the difference. With a player less, we still contained them. We were missing a bit on the counter attack, nothing more. We’ve won a match that is always difficult. Uruguay’s a very tough rival.”

“We will know about MESSI in the next 48 hours. But we won’t risk him. If MESSI’s good, I don’t think we’ll change the formation. We have two or three substitutes for DYBALA. MESSI had a great match despite the pain.”

“We were playing a very smart first half. After the red card to DYBALA, the match just changed. From a tactical point of view, BIGLIA and MASCHERANO played a great game. We had to try and calm DYBALA down after his red card. He was having a good match.”

“To be in first place (in the World Cup Qualifying table) is a positive thing but we’re still far from our objective, which is to qualify for the World Cup. In this competition, it’s very difficult to score a lot of goals. The most important are the 3 points. We’re go back and watch the match. Surely we’ll see some things we would want to improve. But I’m happy with the 1-0.”

Edgardo BAUZA’s reaction at the full-time whistle:

  1. Istiaque, I don’t think for this particular game in Venezuela altitude is that big of a problem to be honest. Merida, where the game will be played is at 1,630 m which is not that high. Compare it to Quito, Ecuador – 2,850 m and especially La Paz, Bolivia – 3,640 m, now those places are tough to play at. I think altitude sickness commonly occurs at above 2,400 meters so Merida, Venezuela should be relatively good although I could be wrong.

Potentially more significant could be a political situation in Venezuela following protests against their current president. Apparently Bauza even demanded security guarantees from CONMEBOL.

    • i do think he is smart but we will not really know until after the 1st 5-8 matches then we will see were he is really going but I will say he got to call icardi- this is a no brainer.

      • Hi All,

There is no point in calling Icardi or any super forward, when the midfield is not capable of passing the ball…Sometimes a forward needs 10 chances or more to get near the goal..

This is a must..our midfield is not strong..or atleast the selection has so far been in that area..

  2. great character shown by our squad after we got a red card, especially messi and msche showed leadership and worked even harder to take the points.
this is what I want to see.
Dybala did good, sadly red carded but his long range shot showed another dimension in attack we desperately need, and also movement.
Messi was motivated and when he is on nobody can stop him and us, but we must take into account that he can’t win us all the games alone.
the same can be said by Mascherano.
thankfully we won because there is tough competition and teams are close to each other with points and we must win our home games and hopefully we win the next game also so we can make a huge step to qualify.
I am skeptic about change, maybe after we qualify or play 2-3 games at the world cup, because the starting eleven never end the tournament the same, they change because they will be forced either through injury or suspensions or drop of form.

    • Ghostdeini,

that long range shot of Dybala first of all showed our other lack. It’s sense of responsibility for win. Maybe we need another superstar as counterpoise for Messi. Look as Dybala ignored Messi in that situation despite the fact he expected pass from Dybala. Dybala ignored and just has shooted. And it was better decision. But it’s typical situation when every our player would be pass to Messi for sure. Dybala did something non schematic, independent, maverick and we need to see more behaviours of this kind. In a way Dybala of NT must keep the “ego” of most important player from Juventus otherwise he will fade in Messi’s shadow and team still will be unbalanced. Dybala must break the pecking order when Messi is priority to get the ball.

      • Most important player ? Buffon, Chiellini, Bonucci, Barzagli or Marchisio. (after Pogba had gone). Dybala ? He’s not on Tevez level so far in Juve. Has a lot to improve to be a superstar. (Neymar or Grizi caliber). I was never really impressed from his play, but the talent is definitely there.

  3. I think Mas did better than I expected, what do you guys think? There was one episode when he received a long diagonal pass from Mascherano I think and headed it in the direction of Messi. In another defensive episode he handled Cavani well. At least he is a fullback. Tata’s idea for Rojo’s back-up was Funes Mori, which is inadequate to say the least.

    • Mas is not final solution but it’s better than back to Rojo.
The fact is some accidental circumstances (injuries, red card of Rojo and other) makes possibilities to drop some players of NT and Bauza should take the occasion.

      • I agree that he is better. At least he is a natural fullback unlike Rojo. In fact Mas played as a left winger for San Juan de San Martin at some point. Some of the world’s best modern fullbacks are former wingers, e.g. Jordi Alba.

    • I actually wouldn’t mind playing di maria against Venezuela. Its a high altitude match and players usually gets tired. Di Maria however useless he is, cant deny that he can run and run untill he’s injured!

Its pretty much given that messi will not play… so di maria can play the next match along with biglia! Next match will be very rough and unexpected!

    • He misses the next game…but I think this is ok. He shows he belongs. I agree with Gonzalo, get rid of that walking hamstring injury DiMaria and replace him with Lamela, and now we can take steps in the right direction.

      • Yes, we are near good direction. It’s relax to see Argentina without Higuain and Aguero. Now it’s time for Di Maria and Biglia (though he was not bad this time). And I don’t want to see Banega and Rojo back too. Mascherano was better passer than Banega not to mention about defence.

  4. I don’t see many new things but the 2 were noticeable:

    – Masche has played as deep lying playmaker and was great in that role

    – it’s great to see the team without Higuain and Aguero finally. The next to kick off is Di Maria

Our defence is very solid for a long time and it’s base to win game without many goals like this. All the good things with our began with Sabella. If you have not solid defence your team is build on sand and you must leave dreams of win.

    • We cant really depend on Masche as a deep lying play maker though. Even if his passing has improved in a big way, thanks to Barca, he struggles against a high pressing side. In an important match, with a good coach we will be in trouble, if we look upto Masche to conduct the mf. Its better we find a proper CMF. Inspite of Biglia/Banega/ whoever it is, we do not have a world class centre midfielder, unless Bauza finds a new guy or he helps any of the existing ones to play better. I will be very happy if he can do that.
I will be also very glad to see if DeMaria gets some bench time, helping him realise that he is not very useful and he need to use his skills better for the sake of team. Am not his hater, he has world class skills, its his decision making which dont help the team.

  5. Tonight’s match should be a joy to everyone not only because of the link but Dybala belongs as a starter. He did well before the bullshit red card, but I have not seen passion like that from a player for a while.

  6. If someone could please find out if they can overrule the red card for dybala.. it doesn’t look like it from his speech though.. very sad, him and Messi seem like they are going to link great

  7. We’re go back and watch the match. Surely we’ll see some things we would want to improve. But I’m happy with the 1-0.”

That is what a real coach should alway do after matches. Not that Bielsa and Tata type post-match ‘excuse explanations’ bs, instead of owning their own failures.
